he GMC Terrain has something for nearly everyone, as the staff at Cronic Chevrolet Buick GMC is finding out. It’s roomy but maneuverable, and comfortable for longer rides. It has fuel efficiency in the range of 25 or more miles per gallon and is affordable with a starting price in the low thirties. There is a wide range of safety features available. “It is just a very nice, comfortable vehicle,” said Cronic sales consultant Gary Coley. The Terrain is proving to be popular with younger people who want to move up from other Chevrolet, Buick or GMC models such as the Trax or the Encore. It is a good fit for couples who have young children and need a comfortable ride for all, as well as those who have an empty nest and want to

It’s the perfect compromise. “The Terrain has had a very good track record overall in customer satisfaction,” said Coley. “Many people who have had them in the past want another one as their next vehicle, so we get a number of repeat buyers with the Terrain.” This is an attractive purchase option for families and singles alike. Coley’s most recent sale was a mid-level SLT to a single woman who lives locally but wanted allwheel drive for when she frequently travels up north. “It had some of the really nice creature

For those who want the best package possible, every GMC model has a Denali version which is top of the line. “It includes a blindside alert On-Star premium plan for three years, as well as a Bose sound system,” said Coley. “It also has an available head-up display, which would actually project your speed onto the windshield. So you don’t even have to look down as you’re driving.” For details or to test drive a GMC Terrain, visit Cronic Chevrolet Buick GMC, only 25 minutes from Fayette County, or croniccars. com to begin shopping from home.

LIFESTYLE LETTER

You Deserve It

February 2024 PUBLISHER

Jennifer Conforti | jennifer.conforti@citylifestyle.com E D I TO R

Byron Pugh | byron.pugh@citylifestyle.com

There is no doubt I have much to love in my life. I live in a lovely home with heat to keep me warm in the winter and air to keep me cool in the summer, thank God! I have a reliable car and food in the fridge. But, every once in a while, there comes along something really special, that for some reason... maybe the reasons I just listed, I didn't think I deserved. I am a coffee lover. Have been since I was 3 years old, drinking my mother's coffee when she was distracted on the phone with my Aunt Kathy. At 5' 9", apparently the old wives tale that it would stunt my growth doesn't hold water. I've always wanted to have a barista-worthy set up so I could have Java-heaven in my home, but I've never had anything other than my automatic drip. Didn't even get on the K-cup train. But, when I heard about the Nespresso brand, I dreamed about the double espressos I could make myself anytime I wanted. This past Christmas I thought, "OK, this is the year. This is when I take the plunge and spend the money on me." I researched the best deals and found exactly what I wanted. nothing fancy, just a machine that would make me a double espresso at 4 pm. But, when I was just about to click the mouse with the cursor over "Purchase Now", I couldn't. I couldn't get the thought out of my head, "This is so frivolous, do I really need this?" Of course I didn't need it. But I sure wanted it. So I lamented my existential struggle to my husband after looking at this machine in my shopping cart for five days, to which he responded, "Do you just want me to press the button?" "Yeeessss," I responded. And, he did. He thought I deserved it. I guess I just needed to hear it from someone else. Is there something you've been wanting to have but feel it's frivolous? Please know I'm not telling you to go out and buy a G-Wagon if you cannot afford it, but if you can afford something and you know it will be a treat in your life, I say do it. I'm certain you work hard and deserve a little cup of joy. Go for it. Blessings, JENNIFER CONFORTI, PUBLISHER @ F AY E T T E C O U N T Y L I F E S T Y L E

“ Faye t t e C ou nt y s h ou l d e m b r ac e h e r le g ac y of re s i l ie n c e a n d c re at i v it y.”

From childhood, an artist lived inside the colorful mind of Nellie Mae Rowe. Born in Fayette County on July 4, 1900, Rowe produced art that received national attention, including a spot in the Smithsonian. In recognition of Rowe’s accomplishments, the Fayette County Historical Society, and the Fayette Heritage Project in conjunction with the Georgia Historical Society is erecting a marker in her honor at Heritage Park in Fayetteville. A dedication ceremony is planned for May 15th at 11:00 a.m. “The story needed to get out there,” Fayette County Historical Society President Deborah Riddle said. Riddle and County Historian John Lynch credited the late Tony Parrott with getting the marker. Long-time Historical Society member and president of the Fayette Heritage Project, Parrott, passed away last November. “He took the ball and ran with it,” Riddle said. Both Lynch and Dr. Katherine Jentleson, the Merrie and Dan Boone Curator of Folk and Self-Taught Art at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, believe the marker is well deserved. The High recently featured the exhibition, “Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe,” which is on a national tour through this year, and a documentary about her life, “This World is Not My Own,” is being screened in the U.S. and Europe. “She is one of the greatest artists to come out of her county, state, and country in the 20th century,” Jentleson said. “Fayette County should embrace her legacy of resilience and creativity.”

Born into slavery, Rowe’s father farmed and worked as a blacksmith and basket weaver. Her mother was a skilled seamstress and quilter. Inheriting their talents, Nellie Mae enjoyed drawing and making dolls as a child. Her Fayette County upbringing would be a lifelong influence on her art. “Growing up in Fayette County meant that many of her core memories were of the farm her family kept and the historic church where she worshipped and went to school, (Flat Rock AME Church, where Rowe is also buried),” Jentleson said. “Animals they kept, like chickens, mules, and cows, feature prominently in her work, and that probably would not have been the case if she had grown up in the city.” Rowe married young and eventually moved with her husband to Vinings. After his death, she remarried and when her second husband died in 1948, Rowe, who was childless, worked as a domestic for many years until her long-time employer died. “She saw the opportunity for creative freedom that finally presented itself to her in the last decade and a half of her life, and she embraced it,” Jentleson said. Rowe created colorful two-dimensional works with crayons and markers on such humble materials as the blank sides of boxes. Her three-dimensional works were just as resourceful—fabric dolls and whimsical sculptures fashioned from gum she chewed to combat headaches. One of her most impressive three-dimensional pieces, however, was her home. Dubbed her “Playhouse,” she adorned it

with her art and recycled objects. She gave tours of her home and serenaded visitors with gospel songs. After Atlanta art patron Judith Alexander befriended Rowe, she had several Atlanta exhibitions and left Georgia for the first time in 1979 to see her exhibition in New York City. Rowe died in 1982. Jentleson said during Rowe’s lifetime black women artists received little attention, but Rowe helped break the barrier. “The art world began giving more credence to the brilliance of Southern Black selftaught artists, with exhibitions like the Corcoran

Gallery of Art’s “Black Folk Art in America,” Jentleson said. “Rowe was one of the only women artists featured in that show.” Jentleson believes Rowe’s art and life can inspire today’s residents of Fayette County. “Rowe never gave up, and she chose beauty over ugliness,” she said. “She did not have an easy life, but she did not let bad experiences defeat her. Her lesson is to protect the core of playfulness and creativity that we are all born with, no matter what life throws at you, and be courageous enough to let it flow when you find an opening.”

Love The Liberty at Golf Rider What do golf cart owners love about the E-Z-GO Liberty?

Four forward-facing seats! This seating arrangement makes it easier for families to travel around their neighborhood and surrounding areas together. Lee Woodruff with Golf Rider says, “It helps when you have children riding and you want them to be secure, and also for adults who are not comfortable riding backward due to inner ear problems or motion issues.” Forward facing is also beneficial for taking friends on a tour of your hometown. Businesses and municipalities use this kind of golf cart for the same reasons. It is just more comfortable when everyone is looking in the same direction – “facing their future,” as Woodruff put it. The Liberty is available for a sweetheart deal as low as $17,499. To learn more about the Liberty and other available models, visit Golf Rider in person at 112 Huddleston Road in Peachtree City or online at golfrider.com.

Place settings make room for couples to share how they met and fell in love.

Saint Valentine would be proud. February may fall short on days, but February 14th makes up for it with a celebration of romance, love, and special friendships. Roses, sentiments of love and affection, chocolates and other decadent confections do well to sweeten the occasion. While some choose to express their love and admiration in an intimate setting for two, some add place settings for other couples to join in the festivities. Couples have their own unique love story. A special in-home Valentine’s Day dinner for 4, 6, or 8 can be a uniquely private way to celebrate those stories while intertwining into a shared experience of love and connection. All that is required is some thoughtful planning, a little creativity, and attention to detail. Creating a memorable Valentine’s Day experience should include a delicious meal accompanied by elements of intimacy and fun. To create a dining space that exudes an intimate atmosphere, consider dimmed lights, an elegant table setting, and perhaps a scattering of rose petals. Small details like personalized place cards with romantic quotes and the couples’ names can add a touch of charm to the table setting. The right music - tempo, lyrics, overall mood of the songs - helps to set the tone for the evening. Crafting a dinner menu that would not only satisfy the taste buds but also evoke the essence of romance is a must. A variety of dishes, from delectable appetizers to mouthwatering main courses

should be carefully curated to cater to different preferences. Do not overlook fondue as an option for your Valentine’s Day fare. The fondue pot lends itself to a myriad of creative dipping options and serves as a social and interactive dining experience that encourages sharing. A chocolate charcuterie or other rich chocolatey dessert can serve as the sweet conclusion to the culinary journey. While couples who know each other may not need an icebreaker to encourage conversation, a well-prepared “Love Story Trivia” game could be a great added touch of fun for the guests. Gather information from the couples in advance of the dinner. At the onset of the evening, each couple is given a set of questions related to their partner’s likes, dislikes, and memorable moments from their relationship. The game will not only spark interesting conversations but also provide an opportunity for the couples to learn something new about each other. Friendships have a positive impact on our lives, but when love and romance are added to the connection, something incredibly meaningful happens. Finding Community WALTON FAYETTEVILLE CREATES COMMUNITY THROUGH RELATIONSHIPS.

Most people think of apartments as short-term places to live. But Walton Fayetteville, which offers one, two, and three-bedroom apartment homes, wants its residents to be part of something better. “We feel passionately that having a strong sense of community and belonging are essential to creating an environment where people truly thrive,” Walton Communities Marketing Director Melissa Whirledge said. “One can “live” anywhere. You just need four walls and a roof. But to build a life that is fulfilling you need the support of a strong community.” Whirledge said Walton creates community through relationships. “We connect with the community around us including local businesses and schools and we work to create opportunities for our residents to connect—not just with us, but with each other. We work with a variety of community and non-profit partners to ensure we have the resources our residents may need in times of challenge. We hope that our residents and team members will recall their time at Walton with great fondness and not just a stop along the way.” Unlike many other developments, Walton owns and manages its 30 communities located throughout Georgia. Walton Fayette boasts modern décor, beautiful landscaping, and amenities that include a resortstyle pool, fitness center, and a self-service pet spa. “Each decision we make is through the lens of what will benefit our residents today, tomorrow, and in the future because we plan to be here today, tomorrow, and in the future,” Whirledge said. After 35 years in business, Walton and its employees still follow the company’s core values: Integrity is Essential, Model the Golden Rule, Serve with Passion, Make it Better, Replace Yourself, Be a Positive Influence, Be Generous, Practice Good Stewardship.

Whirledge believes Walton Fayetteville and its proximity to green space and City Center Park is a good fit with Walton’s vision of community. “We are so excited to be in Fayetteville,” she said, adding that bringing Walton residents to an area benefits the community and businesses around it. “Fayetteville residents are so passionate about their city and home. We have felt strong support from the beginning. For our communities to be successful, this support from the existing residents, businesses, and elected officials is critical. We love the work that the Southern Conversation Trust is doing to steward the public nature areas in Fayetteville, as well.” Whirledge praises Fayetteville’s walkable community vision and city leadership’s help with making Walton Fayette a reality. “Our belief is that there is strong mutual benefit to this and together we can create an incredible experience for both Walton residents and the residents of Fayetteville in general.” With housing shortages and high interest rates, Whirledge said renting an apartment home is a great way to find quality housing without the upfront investment or long-term commitment of purchasing a home. “We find that some of our residents choose to stay with us for a season and others make our communities home for the long term,” she said. “Others may have grown up in a Walton Community as children and return as adults when they are starting out on their own. Others return to enjoy their retirement with a carefree lifestyle. We truly offer something for each unique stage of life. “Walton Communities is committed to having a positive impact in the Fayetteville community and to providing an incredible option for housing that offers a quality home with an unparalleled level of service.” For more information or to schedule a tour of Walton Fayetteville, visit waltonfayetteville.com.

FAMILY VALUES RUN DEEP AND FINANCIAL ADVICE IS ONLY ONE PART OF THE MISSION FOR THE WELLS FAMILY.

LEAVING A LEGACY

Continuing a family legacy of helping others through sound f inancial planning was a natural progression for Travis Wells, a professional f inancial advisor with Money Concepts in Fayetteville. With deep roots in Fayette County, Travis follows a trail blazed by his

The family business is about much more than advice on where to invest money. “We provide retirement planning, counseling, and wealth management from the standpoint of knowing people and knowing their families,” Travis said. “Our business is generational, and we have gener-

“OUR BUSINESS IS GENERATIONAL, AND WE HAVE GENERATIONS OF CLIENTS TOO—THREE GENERATIONS WITH SOME FAMILIES.” mother, Linda Wells. Linda, who served for 12 years as the second woman ever elected to the Fayette County Commission, discovered through her work with a domestic violence advocacy group that many people did not have access to financial advice since most financial advisors cater only to the wealthy. She wanted to be sure that everyone had access to excellent financial advice and planning, so she started her own business. “I’m a problem solver and I don’t like being bored. I found that the women I had worked with needed a financial toolbox, but they didn’t have financial savvy. I knew I could help them.” Travis joined his mom as a financial advisor about eight years ago. “The timing was 100 percent correct,” he said. “A lot of the jobs I’d had prior to that—working in law enforcement and managing a trucking company—were service-related. This was the next, logical progression.” When Linda retired, Travis took the helm, and his son, Carson, will join him as an advisor soon.

ations of clients too—three generations with some families.” A willingness to get to know people is the primary difference that sets them apart from larger firms. “A lot of people in our business provide answers only to the questions that are asked,” Travis said. “Often, people don’t know what to ask. When we talk to people, we want to know what their plans are, what sort of things are going on in their lives, and how income is affecting their households. We do not only talk about their money. We also talk about who handles things in case they pass away, and whether they’ve discussed their plans with their kids. We really try and involve the entire family.” Having been part of the Fayette County community for more than 40 years allows Travis to relate to his clients in a personal way. “You can get financial advice from someone across the world, but it’s different for someone who can say, I grew up here and understand how financial advising really works,” he said. “WHEN WE TALK TO PEOPLE, WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT THEIR PLANS ARE, WHAT SORT OF THINGS ARE GOING ON IN THEIR LIVES, AND HOW INCOME IS AFFECTING THEIR HOUSEHOLDS.” Carson Wells plans to follow in his dad’s footsteps claiming that his grandmother, mom, and dad have taught him not only how to manage a business, but how to manage life. “I’ve always had a knack for helping people and I’ve always wanted to own my own business, so this just makes sense.” When Carson was asked what he valued, he replied, “Elevating the customer experience and time management. Being on time is key! I believe that shows respect for others.” When asked what is the biggest mistake people make with investing their wealth, Travis said, “Not starting early enough. Everybody thinks they have more time, but life happens, and it keeps people busy. Before you know it, you’re 35 or 40 years old. “You can start anytime, but it’s important to just start. Even a couple of years can make a huge difference in how much you have at retirement.” In an era overtaken by global markets and online giants, the value of locally-owned businesses has never been greater. The Wells family has played a crucial role in shaping the character and vitality of our community, and they are ready to help you build a more secure future. Commit, sweat, and celebrate what you’re capable of with 29 days of feel-good fitness & earn this tank!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.

1

Write new vows over lunch or take a random nap because you can.

2

Share planning and talk about your goals for the trip. Do you want to completely unplug or will one of you need excellent wifi to call into a few meetings?

3

If you’re parents, consider setting boundaries for texting and phone calls so you can put the phone away and immerse in one another. Let the kids know you will be checking your phone at a certain time each day (and stick to that). Let the grandparents or caregivers handle the day to day drama.

4

Take turns charting a course for the day. On day one, you check museum opening times, get the timed tickets and find a nearby spot for a healthy lunch. On day two, you sit back and let your partner call the Uber and source out the perfect shopping district, walking distance to a park. Enjoy the ride, either way.
