It has been a goal of mine to visit all 50 states in our beautiful country for as long as I can remember. My father gave me a wooden puzzle of the United States when I was just a toddler and I could put that thing together in no time. I'd flip it over and dump it out and do it again, over and over. Traveling is one of my favorite things to do and I'm blessed to have done so much. I have seen northern California, the Grand Canyon, the beaches of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, NYC and Boston, and the glaciers in Montana... even kayaked to the middle of Flathead Lake just south of Glacier National Park and camped overnight on an island (which, for those of you who know me, was a stretch. I am so NOT a camper). Ps... the pic above is Byron and me in Chicago on an architectural boat tour. Amazing! Adventures from coast to coast, even Hawaii and Alaska, but I still have not stepped foot in all 50 states. Maine, Washington State, Rhode Island, and New Mexico - you are on my hit list. Did you know that Washington State has the only fjords in North America gracing its shores? I've seen the fjords in Norway, but never here. That's just wrong. And who wouldn't want to see the rocky coast of Maine and taste their lobsters? I hear Santa Fe is an amazing city with killer TexMex food, I just have to get there! Rhode Island has tons of history and Cornelius Vanderbilt's mansion, The Breakers, cool. If you are from any of these 4 states, would please email me (look to the right for my email) and tell me what the locals do? I am keeping a log of things to see and experience when I get the chance to turn my 46 states seen into 50. Have luggage, will travel. Enjoy our "Explore" issue this month everyone! I know people who visited New York City for the first time and chose to visit Brooklyn on the last day of their trip. The sentiment is always the same: They wish they had spent more time in Brooklyn. Just over the river from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan, Brooklyn is a pretty epic neighborhood to explore whilst in New York City. New York City is in reality a collection of many neighborhoods scattered among the city’s five boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Staten Island. I lived in Brooklyn most of my adult life. It’s where my kids were born; where I have the fondest memories of young love and life, and where I don’t hesitate to visit when I want to experience the rich culture and some of the best New York pizza . . . hands-down. Brooklyn offers visitors an urban feel, and a host of options for food, entertainment, shopping, and outdoor experiences.

Though a part of New York City, Brooklyn maintains a character all its own. The borough is characterized by cultural diversity, an independent art scene, distinct neighborhoods, and a unique architectural heritage. If Brooklyn were its own city like it used to be, it would be the third-most populous city in the country. Home of iconic New York attractions like the Brooklyn Bridge and Prospect Park, Brooklyn is filled with incredible landmarks and beautiful outdoor spaces that range from serene city parks to the thrilling Coney Island roller coasters. Add its neighborhood feel, sense of community, and the secret to what makes a New York bagel taste so distinctly delicious, and you’ll have just some of the reasons why people love visiting and living in Brooklyn. Deciding which Brooklyn-unique experiences to share is hard, as there are just too many wonderful attractions to list here

— Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn Heights and Promenade, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), and more. There’s really so much to do in Brooklyn and with a fraction of the crowds of Manhattan. Brooklyn offers a side of New York that most tourists don’t venture out to see. If you’re planning to visit New York, the few I’ve chosen will get you started, but believe me, you’re going to want more than one day in the borough of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1883. More than 100,000 cars pass between the gothic towers every day, while the pedestrians and sightseers on the upper walkway number in the thousands. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a verdant oasis founded in 1910 and features hundreds of types of flora, spread out over 52 acres. Each spring, crowds descend on the space when hundreds of cherry blossoms bloom along the Cherry Esplanade.

Time Out Market New York is packed with the local’s favorite restaurants. Amazing eateries offer everything from fried chicken and pizza to ice cream and lots of other yummy fares in between. Chow down over two floors with views of the East River, Brooklyn Bridge, and Manhattan skyline. The visionaries who designed Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, also designed Prospect Park. Reserve time in your vacation to enjoy nature, have a picnic and soak up some sunshine in the sprawling Long Meadow. Take a guided hike, or explore one of the few remaining indigenous forests in the city — the Ravine. Coney Island’s Cyclone is a historic wooden coaster that dates back to 1927. It is now a national historic landmark and part of the new Luna Park. The Cyclone still thrills riders every spring and summer. After you’ve gotten your fill of the amusement park, grab a beer and hot dog from the original Nathan’s Famous. Many of Brooklyn’s neighborhoods are an absolute must-experience. Williamsburg is my favorite, an attraction in itself and most wellknown as ‘coolest neighborhood in Brooklyn’ due to its high concentration of culture, artists, and ubiquitous amounts of places to dine, drink and find entertainment. DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is considered a Brooklyn hot spot, located directly across the East River from Lower Manhattan with some of the best views the city has to offer. Not to mention, DUMBO is easily recognizable as it’s been portrayed in film and tv and is often used

to establish shots for Brooklyn or NYC because the views are incredible. Shopping at an outdoor bazaar is a must in New York, and Brooklyn Flea is hands-down one of the top flea markets to hit. The market has everything, including an impressive selection of throwback wares and records, which you certainly wouldn’t find in any vintage clothing or record store in the city. There are two locations: DUMBO and Williamsburg. Like the attractions, the list of fabulous neighborhoods to explore in Brooklyn is much too long to list here, but know that you will find cool things to do in neighborhoods like Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Crown Heights, Downtown Brooklyn, and many others. Travel from Manhattan to Brooklyn can take 39 - 50 minutes depending on whether you drive or take the New York City subway, which I highly recommend. After all, it’s one of the best public transportation systems in the world; and isn’t riding the subway part of the New York City experience? You bet it is! Plus, you’ll save a mint in cab and Uber fare. While the living standards gap is getting narrower, Brooklyn is still a more budget-friendly city compared to Manhattan. This could mean some places in Brooklyn may have better vacation packages while maintaining the ultimate vacation experience. So be sure to branch out from Manhattan and check out Brooklyn for more unique and memorable New York experiences. As Cut Master D.C. says in his hit single, Brooklyn’s in the House, “Brooklyn, Brooklyn, always funky fresh!”

Sadly, most of us spend more time interacting with the digital world than with the natural world. But spring is a great time to transition from screen to serene with a hike to the Len Foote Hike Inn near Dawsonville. Aptly named for Leonard Foote, a Georgia conservationist, biologist, and nature photographer, the inn has no parking lot. It is accessible only by foot via a moderate five-mile trail. Visiting The Hike Inn is as much about the journey as the destination. It begins with checking in at the visitor center within Amicalola Falls State CONTINUED >

“It's nice to get away from all the modern distractions. When you're trying to relax and get some time off to disconnect and enjoy nature.” Eric Graves, Executive Director Park by 2 p.m. and allowing at least three hours for the hike. Pack light. “The heavier your pack gets the more difficult every step is,” Eric Graves, executive director of The Hike Inn said. “You really don’t need more than 10 pounds worth of stuff and that may even be heavy for an overnight stay with us. We provide everything as far as bed linens, shampoo, soap, towels, washcloths, and your meals. You really just need a change of clothes and personal toiletry items—toothbrush, toothpaste— a couple of snacks, and a water bottle for your hike up. You can always refill that for your hike back down, so you really don’t need much.” For the average tenderfoot, athletic shoes are fine, although experienced hikers will attest that hiking boots offer better support for feet and ankles over uneven terrain. It’s also a good idea to pack a rain poncho and dress in light layers since the area is generally about 10 degrees cooler than South Metro Atlanta. Blazed with lime green markers, the trail snakes its way through the Chattahoochee National Forest. It traces ridges that offer stunning overlooks of the surrounding foothills forested with hickory, pine, and oak, before dipping into valleys veined with gurgling streams. Graves agrees that the backcountry experience increases people’s awareness of the importance of undeveloped lands for recreation. “Without our national forests being intact, you don’t have those opportunities,” he said. Open year-round, Graves said the trail offers something for every season. Don’t forget your camera. Not only will hikers enjoy seeing native plants, including mountain laurel and rhododendron, but they may also glimpse deer, wild turkey, and migratory birds such as sand-hill cranes. And if they’re lucky, they might even see the backside of a bear. “A bear is the one thing that hikers may see that you’re not going to find in most developed areas,” Graves said.

“Overall, they’re amazingly timid for their size, so most people that see them usually just see them running away.” At trails end, The Hike Inn, perched at an altitude of 3,100 feet, offers a rustic welcome. Each of the 20 simple guest rooms features bunk beds and a place to hang your pack, but unlike most hotels, there is no bathroom inside the room. Showers, sinks and toilets are in the eco-friendly bathhouse. Owned by The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the non-profit Inn models environmental sustainability. Odor-free composting toilets save more than 200,000 gallons of water each year, solar panels provide energy, and worm beds recycle organic waste such as food scraps. Home-cooked breakfasts and dinners are served family style giving guests an opportunity to visit with like-minded adventurers. The Sunrise Room offers another place where guests can visit, read, play board games, or make music with the supplied instruments. And for early risers, nothing compares to watching the sunrise from the wraparound porch. Although cell service is available along most of the trail and the Inn, visitors are encouraged to zip their phones in their backpacks and leave them there. And don’t even think about opening a laptop or flipping on the tube. “It’s nice to get away from all the modern distractions,” Graves said. “When you’re trying to relax and get some time off, it’s nice to disconnect and enjoy nature.” For those craving even more adventure, the start of the 2,160-mile Appalachian Trail is a 4.4-mile hike away, and many begin their journey after a restful night at Hike Inn, which hosted about 9,000 visitors last year. It’s important to make reservations early when planning a visit. Weekend dates fill up especially fast. Breakfast Cookies I N G R E D IE N T S • • • • • • • • • •

2 cups quick oats 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup peanut butter 1/4 cup honey 1/3 cup apple butter 1 large banana, mashed (1/2 cup) 1/2 cup dried cranberries 1/2 cup pepitas 1/2 cup raisins

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. 2. Combine all the ingredients into a large bowl of a stand mixer (or hand mixer). Mix until all the ingredients are combined and the dough is thick and heavy. 3. Portion 1/4 cup mounds of cookie dough onto prepared cookie sheets. Use the back of a spoon to slightly flatten out into a cookie shape. (The cookies will not spread in the oven.) 4. Bake for 16-18 minutes or until the edges are slightly brown. Cool cookies on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. 5. Cover leftover cookies and store at room temperature for up to 5 days or 10 days in the fridge.

Popcorn Munch INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • •

½ cup butter ¼ cup brown sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. ginger ¼ tsp. nutmeg 10 cups popcorn - popped 1 ½ cups raisins 3 cups golden grahams cereal 2 cups miniature marshmallows

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees. In a saucepan, combine butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. Melt together over low heat. 2. Lightly grease a large roasting pan. Combine popcorn, raisins, cereal, and marshmallows and place in roaster. 3. Pour the seasoned butter over ingredients in roaster and toss well. Bake for 20 mins. 3. Stir a little and let cool. Makes 30 1/2 cup servings

1 cup puffed quinoa or puffed millet 1/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes 1/2 cup whole roasted almonds 1/2 cup raw pepitas 1/2 cup raw cashews 1/2 cup dried banana chips (broken in half ) • 1/4 cup chopped dried mango or papaya • 2 tablespoons candied ginger • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chunks (or chocolate chips)

DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium mixing bowl, toss all ingredients together until evenly combined.

I was not really sure what to expect when I stepped off the plane in Willemstad, Curaçao. I had heard about Curaçao before but never imagined such a beautiful island overflowing with culture and history. Located some 44 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao is the largest of the islands, both in size and in population, that make up the Dutch Caribbean. Everyone is welcome to share in the “Dushi” life of Curaçao. Dushi, in the local Papiamentu language, has different meanings. Dushi is affirmational and all meanings are positive. Dushi is tasty, beautiful, sexy, sweet, delicious, or just plain old nice. It is literally the favorite adjective of the island and is used to describe everything. The country of Curaçao even has a nickname: Dushi Korsou. Willemstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, accommodates some 743 notable international monuments. Its rich, globally influenced, history “illustrates the organic growth of a multi-cultural community over three centuries.” Willemstad’s people and maritime history are vibrantly depicted through the city’s incredible public art installations. Sculpture and murals adorn the buildings, courtyards, and park benches

throughout this breathtaking seaside paradise – each telling a different story of Curaçao. Everything time you turn a corner there is another beautifully colored mural waiting to inspire and tell its unique story. Grab a scooter and ‘get lost’ amongst the pastel crayon-colored Dutch colonial buildings that give way to hidden sculpture gardens, neighborhood art galleries painted staircases and cleverly decorated alleyways. Be sure to catch Curaçao’s famous “big” sister, Chichi, the ubiquitous Rubenesque lady of the island who is always portrayed with brightly patterned, vivid fabrics. Downtown Willemstad boasts some of the city’s best sites including the one-of-a-kind Queen Emma Floating Bridge and Wilhelmina Plaza. For a real taste of the island don’t forget a local rum tasting at Annabay Club or catch an authentic island lunch at Plasa Bieu Food Hall. Whether you feel like a quick snack, a gourmet meal, or even a delicious mocktail, there are many options throughout the city.
