ome business owners may consider it a hardship to try to have a sales force that reflects the diversity of the community it serves. One of two people in the country selected to receive Buick GMC’s first-ever Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award in 2022, Howell recognizes how her unique background has equipped her to operate as a female leader in a male-dominated profession that included her father. “My dad did not have any sons and he was always proud of that fact,” she said. “He used to joke that the dealers with sons seemed to be more concerned with their sons’ golf game, and he wasn’t worried about my focus.” Growing up with expectations to excel regardless of gender and also developing

a solid work ethic, Howell attended Sweet Briar, an all-women’s college, in an environment she believes was best for the development of her leadership skills. “As you go along, you become even more cognizant of the differences and that the expectations are higher for you,” she said. “Obviously, if there is one female dealer or one minority dealer in a room with 10 or 12 white males, you are going to stand out more either for good or bad. More is expected and that is fine with me. I’ve always accepted that I need to work harder and smarter.” Minorities average 30 percent of the management team at all of Cronic’s three dealerships, and Howell goes a step further to make sure her overall staff is NISSAN

representative of the surrounding area. That has led to a great deal of positive community feedback and more foot traffic from a wide-ranging customer base. At the end of the day, she still has to sell cars and make a profit. Fairness and diversity guide much of Howell’s daily decisions but she is mindful to fit those aspects into the constraints of a successful business. “I think I am more comfortable working with diverse styles and more accepting of cultural differences, but that is a strength and helps me to be successful,” she said. “I think people often will not take on things they are afraid of. I have found that I do work well with the cultural differences and I do realize that, for my success, a stronger team is going to be a more diverse team.”

LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Joy of Smiling
January 2023 PUBLISHER
Jennifer Conforti | jennifer.conforti@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR
Byron Pugh | byron.pugh@citylifestyle.com
When I was 12 years old, I decided exactly what I wanted for my future. I told my mom and dad that I was going to go to college and become a dental hygienist, get a job, buy a fur coat, buy a car, get married at 24, have my first child at 26, and another at 28 and for my 10th anniversary, go to Norway to celebrate. And up to "having my first child at 26", I did it all. I took specific courses in high school that I felt would help my career as a hygienist and was accepted into the dental hygiene program at our local community college in 1986. I graduated with an Associate in Science degree in June of 1988 and began working one month later. My first purchase was a fur coat in September of that year and 6 months later, I bought my first car, all on my own... a fire engine red, 1987 Mazda MX 6 GT Turbo. Man, did I feel special. I'm not sure why I wanted to be a dental hygienist at such a young age, other than I knew I wanted to be in the health field and I loved going to the dentist. Yes, I did, and still do! I've always had great teeth and I wanted others to know the joy of smiling with confidence. My mother used to tell me, "If you smile big, no one will notice anything else. A smile can light up a room and make others feel so good!" I have never forgotten her words. I made it my mission to become the best dental hygienist in the world. Not sure I accomplished that, but I was pretty darn good if I do say so myself. One of the biggest lessons I learned during that time was that your mouth is connected to your overall body health. For some reason, people disassociate their mouths from their bodies, but, last time I checked, they are connected. Taking care of your body means taking care of your whole body, mouth included. I'm excited to introduce you to some wonderful healthcare professionals in our Health & Wellness issue this year, three of which are on the cover. Aren't they beautiful? Your health is something to be thankful for. Take heed and get healthy. Blessings and here's to good health!

Google ‘how to relieve stress’ and millions of results suggest exercise and deep breathing as the most popular top two options. Virtually any form of physical activity can act as a stress reliever, but few activities provide more overall health benefits than the practice of yoga. The physical benefits of yoga are real, and the approach to wellness focuses on the body’s natural tendency toward health and self-healing. Such is the focus of Sweet Tea Yoga’s owner, Sarah Ruiz. “There was no dedicated yoga studio space here, and I needed a place to practice yoga to deal with all the curve balls life throws at you. We opened our doors January 1, 2018.” At Sweet Tea Yoga in Peachtree City, space is available to slow down, stretch, balance and experience peace of mind... a space for the community to foster a sense of mindfulness and well-being, as well as connect and meet people. “Our goal,” says Sarah, “is to create a space of health and happiness for the community; to collaborate and find healing of the mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga.” Sweet Tea Yoga — South Atlanta’s premier yoga studio — offers a wide range of yoga classes from Gentle, Vinyasa, Yin, Ashtanga, Power Flow, Pilates/Yoga Fusion, and Prenatal Yoga to Restorative Yoga and Yoga Nidra classes. In addition, Thai massage services, as well as private yoga instruction for individuals or small groups, are available. In 2019, Sweet Tea Yoga added a second studio space which opens the door for classes to be conducted simultaneously and serves as a dedicated heated studio. A shower room in the second space makes for a nice addition as well. In the wake of COVID, we see startling numbers of people dealing with depression, anxiety, stress and related issues. More so now than at any other time in history, people are looking for ways to heal, connect, strengthen and feel peace. The American Osteopathic Association lists a variety of ways regular yoga practice can provide physical and mental health benefits. Sarah emphasizes the importance of slowing down. “We are a go, go, go society. We’re not designed to be on the go 24-7. Every time you focus on the breath and breathing, you are slowing down.” Sarah continues, “As we become more tech-advanced and busier in our day-to-day, it’s really important that we take some time out and take a breath from our day. If people can do that, they’re going to take that feeling out into their day and out into the world.”

There are so many different kinds of yoga practices that make it possible for anyone to start. Whether you’re a couch potato or a professional athlete, size and fitness levels do not matter because there are modifications for every yoga pose and beginner classes in every style. Sweet Tea Yoga makes it easy to get started or to continue your practice. “We’re here to help you. We have everything for you, so you don’t need to bring anything; just dress comfortably.” Safety is a priority for Sarah and Sweet Tea Yoga. “You want to know that when you are doing yoga, you are doing it safely and guided by someone who understands the body.” Sweet Tea Yoga instructors are certified through Yoga Alliance, have a minimum 200-hour training, and more than half have advanced training; an additional 300-500 hours or certified to teach other instructors. All are CPR/First Aid certified, and Sarah is trained in prenatal and postnatal yoga. Visit sweetteayoga.com to register for classes and to learn more. Namaste.

You're So Vein Administrator shares her personal story to educate others about the importance of vascular health. ARTICLE BY SUSAN WALWORTH | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S
At a time of year when everyone is health conscious, few give a thought to their vascular system. For years, the same was true for Truffles Vein Specialists practice administrator, Kristina Walker. As a teen, shopping for school clothes every year, her legs would ache so badly, she would be ready to go home halfway through the day. “What teenager wants to stop shopping?” she asked. Kristina assumed her issues were the same that everyone experienced after being on their feet for a long time. It wasn’t until later when she started her career at a vascular practice, she discovered she was experiencing the symptoms of vein disease. Finally, she understood that her leg pain, heaviness, achiness, swelling, and fatigue were not normal. Although she wanted to seek treatment, Kristina was skeptical. She thought, “Really? Veins can cause all these symptoms?” But as she watched other patients seek treatment and find relief, at 23 years old she purchased her first pair of compression hose. “I could tell a world of difference,” she said. “At that point, I was convinced I had vein disease.” After the birth of her second child, Kristina had an ultrasound on her legs that confirmed venous insufficiency in six veins, three in each leg. After radiofrequency ablation and ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, she noticed significant relief. But after several months her symptoms subtly returned. “I didn’t understand why my story wasn’t as successful as our other patients, and I didn’t want to offend my physician, so I didn’t say anything,” she said. After leaving that practice for another job, Kristina also started experiencing low back pain, abdominal swelling, and bloating as well as significant leg and pelvic pain. When she was 27, her gynecologist recommended a hysterectomy since they couldn’t find the source of her pain. Kristina’s eureka moment occurred after vascular technologist Brian Sapp had recruited her to join
the Truffles Vein Specialists team in 2016. Brian was describing the symptoms of iliac vein compression and pelvic congestion syndrome, caused by diseased veins in the pelvic area. When Kristina heard the symptoms— continued leg pain even after treatment, pelvic pain, bloating, and irritable bowel syndrome— she thought, “Oh my goodness, that’s exactly what I have.” A scan revealed varicosities around her uterus were causing her swelling and pain. “That’s what sets Truffles apart,” Kristina said. “We recognize iliac vein compression and pelvic congestion before it’s an emergency. We give our patients the information to decide whether to move forward with treatment depending on their symptoms and impact on daily living and quality of life. We look much further into what’s causing the symptoms and we want our patients to “own” their care.” Although she’s in administration, Kristina’s personal experience has made her as passionate about educating others about vascular health as the medical staff at Truffles. “There’s such a lack of awareness of vascular health, people don’t attribute their symptoms to veins. Our ultimate goal is to make every person who walks through the door better.”
THE TREAT AFTER THE TREATMENT Chocolate may have nothing to do with vein care, but chocolate truffles have become the signature treat for patients at Truffles Vein Specialists, which strives to treat patients as family. Started in 2013 by Dr. Paul Feldman, who partnered with Brian Sapp, a vascular technologist, in 2015, Truffles has locations in Fayetteville, McDonough, and Carrollton with plans to open a fourth location in Newnan next year. The team of vein specialists at Truffles provides medical and cosmetic treatment for varicose veins, spider veins, leg swelling, restless leg syndrome, and pelvic varicosities. Truffles Vein

“The decision to treat spider veins and varicose veins is based on relieving symptoms, restoring health to the legs, improving circulation, and improving their appearance.” Specialists perform minimally invasive vein treatments, including the VenaSeal™ closure system, radio-frequency endovenous ablation, LASER ablation, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, and Varithena Micro-Foam therapy. These treatments when used in conjunction provide effective long-lasting relief. Insurance covers more than 90 percent of treatments. Indicators of venous insufficiency can include swelling, leg fatigue, heaviness, pain, and itching as well as spider and varicose veins, which are more than cosmetic. Spider
veins, for example, are the visible signs of an underlying condition that has caused the body to create new avenues for blood to flow through. Varicose veins indicate weak vein walls and valves. Kristina wholeheartedly supports this statement from Dr. Feldman, “The decision to treat spider veins and varicose veins is based on relieving symptoms, restoring health to the legs, improving circulation, and improving their appearance.” For more information about Truffles Vein Specialists visit www.trufflesveinspecialists.com.

Put Your Health Where Your Mouth Is Start the new year right and get your smile into shape!
ARTICLE BY JENNIFER CONFORTI | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN WILSON
Traditionally (and ironically), the thought of going to the dentist does not bring a smile to one's face. Dr. Sukari McMiller wants to change that. With her calm demeanor and beautiful smile, anxiety seems to melt away. Born and raised in Miami, Dr. McMiller says “I always knew I wanted to be in healthcare, in fact, I thought I’d be a pediatrician.” She never really considered dentistry until she heard a dentist speak to students in the health program about his work. “As a child, the dentist was not a priority to my family so I never really had much experience, but he really piqued my interest.” Sukari researched the profession and after much prayer and consideration, decided to attend dental school. She graduated from Meharry Medical College in 2004, spent

one year in residency at the University of Florida, got married, and moved to Georgia to start her career as a dentist. She opened Dreamworks Dental in Fayetteville, in August 2021. “Dentistry is more than just a science. It’s artistry, critical thinking, service to others, and working as a team with my patients.” Dr. McMiller’s number one goal is to make sure her patients have the best experience possible. “Educating my patients about their dental health and how it affects their entire body is very important to me. I want them to be healthy from head to toe. Taking the fear out of dentistry is a challenge that I have graciously accepted. There’s nothing better than helping people who were once embarrassed to show their teeth, be able to confidently smile.”

The Right Prescription
Dr. Irene Ayoyinka Omotoso goes above and beyond to extend love and compassion. ARTICLE BY PAM REID | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHEN WILSON
32
I NSP IR E D BY | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S
It would not be a surprise to Dr. Irene Omotoso’s patients to learn that her middle name, Ayoyinka, means ‘joy surrounds me’. Her name and its meaning epitomize who Dr. Omotoso is at her core — a doctor who takes great care to spread joy and goodwill to her patients and staff. She says, “My goal is just to care for people and that has channeled my career throughout.” Born in Lagos, Nigeria, Irene knew by the age of nine that she wanted to be a doctor. She was inspired by an uncle she admires a great deal. “My mother’s brother was a doctor in the United States when I was just in high school. He is very intelligent, and he encouraged me. I went to medical school at the University of Lagos in Nigeria.” The young medical student worked hard and arrived in the United States in January 1999, where she passed her board exams and obtained her medical license. Dr. Omotoso started as a hospital internist in Syracuse, NY in 2003. After ten years, she joined Morehouse as an Assistant Professor of Medicine. “What I enjoyed most was going with the residents on the wards, and what made me happiest was being able to tell them, ‘You know everything, but if this patient perceives that you don’t care, they will go elsewhere.’ It was my resounding message for every single one of my residents.” Having lived in upstate New York for a number of years, Dr. Omotoso and her husband, also a doctor, were ready to leave the cold-weather state. “We were looking
for warm weather and warm people, and we found both. Georgia is warm and the people here are warm. We’ve been here for 16 years.” The Omotosos have twins; a boy and a girl. “My family is my world. They balance my life. I’m a woman of faith. I’m a born-again Christian unashamedly. I’ve been married to the love of my life for 19 years, and I’m more in love with him today than when I said, ‘I do’.” Dr. Omotoso is admired and respected by her patients. “Some people call it empathy, but I prefer to use the word compassion. The common theme for every one of my patients is that I care about them genuinely. I genuinely like being a doctor.” Dr. Omotoso shares health advice for the New Year, “I know how ordinar y this sounds, but it’s t wo words — ‘start walking’. You’d be amazed at what walking does, and I encourage people to not walk alone. When you walk by yourself, you’re not as motivated to keep it up. Find a walking buddy. When you walk with someone it becomes a social interaction. The factor that increases lifespan and well-being the most is social interaction.” Visit waterfallsmedicalpractice.org to learn more about Dr. Omotoso’s medical practice. “Our priority is not just to keep people healthy, but for the staff to be healthy as well. I want them to be healthy emotionally. I want them to be healthy physically. I couldn’t do what I do without my staff.”

THE BENEFIT S of PL ANT-BASED E ATING ARTICLE BY CLAUDIA MARTIN-AYOADE PHOTOGRAPHY BY RAYMOND WILEY

EAT R IGH T | WEL L NESS
Most people think a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant-based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients.
You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; it is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet! PLANT-BASED EATING IS MORE OF A LIFESTYLE THAN A DIET. YOU ARE SIMPLY EATING MORE FOODS THAT ARE CLOSER TO THEIR HARVESTED STATE WITH MINIMAL PROCESSING. 38
EAT R IGH T | WEL L N ESS
1. Make small changes to test your comfort level when reducing meat intake. There is a risk of being overwhelmed if you suddenly stop eating meat altogether, and it will be harder to stick to your choice long term. Increase consumption of plant foods you already like. 2. Plant-based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life. VEGETABLE QUICHE Recipe provided from Lauren Lane @lauren_lane_culinarian
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • •
1 pie dough 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cups mixed veggies, such as raw spinach leaves and cooked broccoli and asparagus 7 large eggs, lightly beaten 1 1/4 cups light cream 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs like parsley or thyme 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon fresh cracked pepper 3/4 cup grated gruyere or white cheddar cheese 1/4 cup grated parmigiano-reggiano
Instructions 1. 2. 3.
4.
5.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Transfer the dough to a 9-inch pie plate and press it into shape. Crimp the edges if desired. Place a sheet of parchment paper or foil into the pie shell and fill with pie weights, uncooked rice or dried beans. Bake until the edges are very lightly golden, about 25 minutes. Remove the pie crust but keep the oven on. If edges start getting too brown, cover with a pie cover or foil. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, cream, herbs, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a large bowl and lightly whisk. Sprinkle half of the gruyere or cheddar and parmigiano-reggiano on the crust, followed by the veggies, and then the remaining cheese. Pour the egg mixture over the top and bake until set, about 35 minutes.

LEGGINGS 3 WAY S ARTICLE BY HALEY WILLIAMS
Our suggestions for styling faux leather leggings As we move through the season of spandex when most of us feel we’d rather not leave our stretchy pants, we wanted to feature three distinct looks using the same pair of Foil Snake Print Faux Leather leggings from Spanx. Whether you’re brunching with the babes or getting ready for date night, these versatile leggings can carry you through from casual to chic. While there are endless ways to wear them, we’re going to show you three ways to start styling them today.

Who doesn’t love a good brunch with the girls after your workout complete with mimosas to celebrate? Our suggestion is to layer your tank with loose layers and a light jacket to swiftly transition you from the barre to breakfast. A hat is always a good option to have on hand in case you worked too hard and that hair is showing it. We opted for easy-to-slip-on sockless sneakers that breathe. Lastly, don’t forget a cute tote or bag. Consider throwing in a clean tank and any makeup or face wipes you may need for freshening up on your way.
Whether you want a bit of a boost, a hint of a lift, or just a little tuck, you won’t go wrong with this versatile shapewear. And with these styling tips, you’re ready to throw them on for any occasion!
MOTO MAMA What we love about Spanx is their inherent ability to elevate your look, regardless of the occasion. Stretchy pants in a faux leather snake design? Say no more. Pair them with edgy booties or colorful pumps for a more elegant aesthetic. Playing with different textures is a good way to add interest and intrigue. Consider a chunky sweater with some unexpected details like the bare shoulder shown here, a thick boucle or intricate detailing. We love a good leather jacket with hardware details draped over the shoulder(s) for chilly evenings as you traverse the town. Pair this look with a gorgeous sparkly clutch and chunky bracelet.
SAT U R DAY SPORTS CH IC Whether you’re headed to a child’s sports game or a bar to watch the big game with your friends, leggings offer the structure and flexibility you’ll want as you find your spot among the fans in the bleachers or indulge in some lovely libations. Layers are life for this look. We tied a button-down around the waist which is so nice through the colder winter months as both an outfit accessory and a layering piece. Fur-lined high tops provide practical footwear for this look — because who doesn’t love some killer sneaks? A shacket and crossover bag complete the look. JANUARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Chicken in Lemon Wine Sauce HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THIS DELIGHTFUL DISH IS LESS THAN 300 CALORIES PER SERVING!
Serves: 4
ingredients: • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1/4 cup flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper • 1/4 cup olive oil • 1 small onion diced fine • 1 garlic clove minced • 1/2 cup dry white wine • 1/2 cup chicken stock • 1 small lemon juiced & zested • 1/2 teaspoon thyme, dried • 1 teaspoon parsley, fresh minced (saving 2 stems)
Cooking Instructions 1. Dredge the chicken in the flour mixed with salt and pepper. Heat the oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the chicken well on both sides, remove chicken, add onions and garlic to the pan, lower heat and cook until onions are very soft, about 8 minutes. Meanwhile, zest the lemon, juice it and mince the parsley. 2. Add the wine, chicken stock, lemon juice, parsley stems, thyme, and chicken; then bring to a boil, cover, and reduce heat to low. Cook over low heat, stirring occasionally to keep chicken from sticking, for about 1/2 hour or until chicken is very tender and sauce has thickened slightly.
