Sometime in the 1980s, a mother somewhere in Chicago actually went on strike. She was a stay-at-home mom and was sick and tired of doing everything in her home without so much as a “thank you” from her husband or children. So she climbed up to the roof of her house and sat there with an ‘I’m On Strike’ sign all day and all evening. She stopped picking up after the four children. She stopped doing their laundry. She turned discipline over to her husband. She gave up her chef`s hat and tossed her chauffeur`s cap. She unplugged the television and radio and had the telephone disconnected. She only came in to eat and sleep. If her family wanted breakfast, lunch, dinner, or clean clothes, they had to fend for themselves. My mother loved her for that. She loved her so much that she followed suit! I never thought I was an ungrateful child back then, but now that it’s on me to do ‘all the things’, I get it. I see posts on Facebook, especially by busy, business-owning moms who relay all they have to do on any given day and marvel that they are able to complete ‘all the things’ like handling clients, cooking dinner, shopping, getting three loads of laundry folded and put away, helping their children with homework, and on and on and on. It’s exhausting to read as I am right there with them and can totally relate. But here’s the thing about all the things and there’s really no way around this. I chose to do all the things. I didn’t have to publish a magazine and I didn’t have to start a nonprofit and I didn’t have to join community organizations and I didn’t have to marry Byron and I didn’t have to be a mommy. I didn’t HAVE to do any of these things. But I did, and all these things have become a great source of joy. There may be a few things here and there I could release, but I am right in my sweet spot. Busy, happy, pretty healthy, downright pooped, and loving doing all the things. As the holidays are upon us, I pray that you all find your sweet spot with all, some, or none of the things. Remember, it’s your choice.

In the heart of Druid Hills, nestled on a beautiful 12-acre estate, is a magical place where people from all backgrounds can come to celebrate their winter holidays and more. Callanwolde Fine Arts Center, located at 980 Briarcliff Road NE in Atlanta, is hosting its annual Winter House — a wonderland of art, music, and tradition, where everyone is welcome. If you are looking to enjoy a fun-filled day with family and friends or celebrate a holiday, birthday, or
other special occasion, Callanwolde’s Winter House is the perfect event for a distinctively unique experience. There is something for everyone during Winter House. From November 25th through December 10th, the 27,000-square-foot historic mansion is beautifully decorated and ready for visitors to engage in festivities of all kinds. An array of activities for the whole family, workshops, dance performances, live concerts,
and shopping are described by Callanwolde’s Executive Director, Andrew Keenan, as an inclusive, all-encompassing experience. “Callanwolde is a community arts center. We feel it’s important to be open to the entire community. pits as live holiday music fills the air. Children can write letters to Santa and even visit with jolly Saint Nick himself. There are opportunities to experience Callanwolde’s most popular classes such as Throwing on the Wheel, and Andrew underscores the benefit of taking advantage. “This gives the community an opportunity to take the classes that sell out in 6 minutes during our normal registration, and participate in a workshop before committing to a full class.” Raku - a Japanese firing technique, jewelry making, hand-building, blacksmithing and more are being offered during Winter House as well. Register in advance for these classes, and when you do, you don’t have to bring anything but yourself. If you’re looking for that special gift this season, Andrew boasts that the holiday artist market is sure to please. “We have a huge holiday artist market with professional, high-quality items. It’s a combination of our students and our award-winning faculty, especially the potters. The pottery is most prolific as Callanwolde has the largest pottery program in the Southeast. There are also items from outstanding jewelry and weaving artists. Somehow I manage to buy a scarf every year. You can come shop and buy hot chocolate, as well as beer and wine. There will be some food for sale as well.” Live dance and musical performances are a big deal during Winter House. “Joe Gransden will perform a holiday show in our courtyard on December 2nd.” There will be performances by the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, and the Atlanta Young Singers. Callanwolde dancers will perform an original show called All Aboard, and a pianist plays when there is no performance. Beyond all the things you can eat and drink, buy and experience, there is still more. How does etching glass and making clay gingerbread houses sound? What about candle making, wreath making, and winter landscape painting? If you have yet to be excited, how does ‘free’ sound? Andrew shares this about Winter House, “It’s an open house. You don’t have to pay to come in. We have things for sale and there is a cost for some things.” Workshops require registration, and some performances require tickets. SANDRA MCFARLAND TURNED WELLNESS INTO A SHOPPING EXPERIENCE FOR THE SENSES.

The daughter of a college professor of interior design, Sandra McFarland was raised with an eye for making her surroundings beautiful. Her foundation from birth in design was a vital part of creating 180 Pure Home in the Town at Trilith. Sandra was raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and while her career path involved merchandising for behemoth retail stores like JCPenney and Sears, her heart was in the wellness space. Sandra found herself diving deep and she created a line of supplements to help those suffering from anxiety, sleep deprivation, and even chronic pain. Her 180 Pure line of products commanded the attention of the community so much that in 2018, she decided to open her own brick-and-mortar storefront. When the store did so well that she needed to expand to handle the demand, she moved into a space five times larger than the original store. “We were counselors to the people who came into the store. People were in pain and there was just so much information out there, that it’s confusing. They wanted answers from us.”
With all of that extra space, Sandra needed something for her customers to peruse while she consulted with others. Using her innate interior design talents, she began to curate select home goods, gifts, and trinkets. “My love language is gifts so it’s a joy for me,” Sandra said with a smile. She filled her store with home decor items, baubles and jewels, and everything tabletop, from linens to glassware. “I order brands I gravitate towards. It’s fun seeing people enjoy the same things I do.” Due to the success of her first store in Illinois, Sandra and her husband, Dan, considered opening a second location. They figured it would be nice to grow a new store in a place they liked to visit, and Peachtree City, GA, was top of their list. They toured The Avenue PTC and were highly considering a space when the world stopped in March of 2020. They thought about placing the second location on the back burner, but when a friend from Peachtree City called and told Sandra about the Town at Trilith, something sparked in her. She was encouraged to visit with the Town planners and upon meeting them in January 2021, and hearing the concept, she fell in love with the vision. “We signed the agreement on January 22nd and opened that May. It was an absolute whirlwind!” They had no plans on moving to Georgia but rather had planned to travel back and forth to run this second location. As she needed to be here while her store was under construction, Sandra was staying at a friend’s mother’s house, but deeply felt she needed a place of her own. She needed a sanctuary. One opportunity to rent fell through. “I had already cried buckets about finding a place. I had no plans, no capital, I just prayed.” Not long after praying, Sandra

was lamenting to a friend in her store, which was under construction at the time, when a lady popped her head in the door to ask what this would become. As they talked they found out they both grew up in the midwest and the new friend told her that she would be traveling for several months and that Sandra could live there. Only God! This allowed her to spend every day during the build-out phase in her store. And one other change that was not in her plans, Sandra, Dan, and their three children, Maddie, Conner, and Finn have now moved, permanently, to the Town at Trilith. “We are now all part of the magic that is Trilith. As the Holidays approach, perhaps it’s time to upgrade your old ride before setting out for Grandma’s house! We recently visited with Gary Coley of Cronic Chevrolet, Buick, GMC in Griffin to check out the new Buick Envision. The Envision is a standout in the competitive compact SUV market, offering a blend of style, comfort, and technology. The model we drove was the upscale Envision Avenir. It offers a premium experience that goes beyond the standard model. Features included a full leather interior, panoramic moonroof, wireless phone charging, and Apple Car Play or Android Auto connectivity. When you first sit down in the driver’s seat, you’ll find a sumptuous and well-appointed cabin, on par with some costing thousands of dollars more.
The Envision Avenir boasts premium leather upholstery, comfortable seats with heating and ventilation for the front row, and wood-grain accents that add a touch of warmth to the interior. You can also get heated seats for the rear. Both front and rear passengers will enjoy ample legroom and a serene environment, thanks to Buick’s Quiettuning active noise canceling technology. The Envision Avenir excels in the technology department. Its infotainment system, displayed on a large 10.2-inch touchscreen, is responsive and user-friendly. You can also use voice commands to operate many of the functions. You’ll find a 9-speaker premium Bose audio system that delivers impressive sound quality. The Avenir also benefits from a 360-degree camera system, a head-up display, and Surround Vision, an augmented reality navigation feature that enhances the driver’s perspective. Under the hood, the Envision Avenir features the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine found in the standard Envision. This engine produces 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, which provides sufficient power for most driving situations. The 9-speed automatic transmission is smooth and the standard all-wheel drive helps with traction and handling. All this, while still achieving impressive MPGs! An easy drive from Fayette County, Madison offers visitors a present from the past. It’s a heartwarming gift, especially during Christmas. With its numerous historic homes and charming downtown, national and regional publications have consistently named this quintessential small town, established in 1809, one of the country’s most beautiful. Norman Rockwell would feel right at home here. Sarah Lynn Holbert, executive director of the Morgan County Historical Society, said people enjoy visiting Madison, which has one of Georgia’s oldest and largest historic districts, not only for the historical aspect of the community but also because it takes them back to a simpler, possibly happier time. “I think people from out of town probably appreciate it more than some of us that grew up here,” she said, adding that Madison draws visitors from across the country and around the world. This year, Madison rolls out the welcome mat for its annual Christmas Tour of Homes on Dec. 1st and 2nd with self-guided daytime and candlelight tours. “It’s more than a tour,” Holbert said. “It’s really an experience.” Already missed the tour dates? Not to worry. Christmas in Madison lingers through early January and there’s still plenty to see and do. Stop by the Madison Morgan County Welcome Center and pick up a free, self-guided walking tour that includes historic homes, buildings and landmarks. Local museums including the Museum of Madison & Morgan County housed inside the Madison Morgan Cultural Center and the Morgan County African American Museum offer a deeper insight into the community. The Historical Society also maintains several house museums open

Heritage Hall, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1811 and used as a private residence until 1977 is decked out for holidays with natural decorations as it would have been between 1830 and 1870. Built in 1810, The Rogers House offers an example of Piedmont Plain architecture prevalent in the rural United States. And a woman born in 1864 to an enslaved family who earned her living washing and ironing, built Rose Cottage in 1891. Both homes are decked out with period Christmas decorations as well. “Everybody likes pretty lights, and Madison is really beautiful at Christmas,” Holbert said. “The whole town’s lit up. We’ve got lots of wonderful restaurants downtown that participate, and all the homes and stores are decorated. It’s almost like a Hallmark Community.” Easily walkable, downtown Madison is lined with shops filled with unique treasures. “We have a lot of really good gift shops and a lot of antique shops,” Holbert said, adding that there are also unique restaurants and coffee shops including a new French bakery. After shopping and noshing, Town Park is a great place to take a breather. And if one day is not enough for your Madison getaway, several B&Bs, Inns, and hotels, are available as well as farm stays and cabins. CHANGING VIEWS Premier Blinds & Designs owner wants to change the perception of customer service while giving back and inspiring others.
James Crossway wants to change people’s views. Yes, he owns Premier Blinds and Designs in Peachtree City, but there’s much more to his vision than window treatments. Born to 15-year-old parents, James has experienced many hardships and even abandonment. But raised by his grandmother without a lot of money, James knew early on that he didn’t want his past to dictate his future. “I had a pretty rough go of it as a child and had some pretty strange things happen,” he said. “It created this mentality going forward that I wanted to prove to people that it didn’t matter where you come from and that you can do whatever you would like to do in your life.” Drawing from his experiences, James has created a business mission of changing people’s perception of customer service. He does this with a relational approach, not a transactional approach while meeting the needs of others and giving back to the community. Always a dreamer, James’s entrepreneurial journey began at 18 after he met Jen, who would become his wife. Realizing he couldn’t afford a wife on a waiter’s salary; he found a job passing out flyers for a small blind company. He eventually moved into sales and
management before joining another blind company where he worked until the 2008 economic crash. For the next eight years, he worked for a coffee delivery service before starting his own window treatment company in 2016. Without a physical location, James and Jen met people in their homes. Six years later, they opened their first gallery in Peachtree City, which carries anything that can go in a window or decorate it—blinds, shutters, shades, automation, and soft treatments. “It took us a while to pull the trigger,” James said. “But I’m glad we did.” From the start the business focus was serving others, not treating people as objects. “That’s what’s needed in our society today,” James said. It’s the focus of the entire Premier team. Operations Manager, Michelle Harris has even delivered gift baskets to customers experiencing tragedy. “It allows us to view customers in a different light,” James said. James also believes in giving back to the community. A percentage of Premier’s earnings are donated to organizations including Two Sparrows Village as well as a child battling cancer. “We want to find things that are

important to our customers and our community, he said adding that impacting lives “solidifies a legacy worth living.” Desiring to improve the image of customer service as a whole and encourage other businesses to follow suit, James said, “We want (our customers) to be absolutely wowed by what we’re doing.” Apparently, it’s working! Premier will soon open a showroom in downtown Atlanta and is scouting locations for another showroom in Tampa, Florida. Michelle, Premier’s first hire, shares James’s vision of service. She enjoys assisting customers with their window treatments and educating them on all they can do such as integrating with smarthome technology. She encourages people to come to the showroom first. “You can visually see exactly what you’re investing in and try out every lift system we have so you can find out the best fit for you,” she said. She also helps solve customers’ specific problems. “You can have full control of all the light that’s coming into your home,” she said, adding that it can be done in a way that’s attractive and increases home value. “The treatments are definitely an investment, but ours come with a lifetime warranty.” Michelle notes that window treatments not only add value at resell but also provide UV protection and insulation. A single mother of sons Kylie and Ayden, Michelle’s passion is helping others. “People deserve to feel joy and to feel love in every aspect of life, even when buying window treatments, she said. She even gives customers her personal phone number. “They can call me anytime if they have a problem.” For James, being a business owner has been the greatest blessing and the hardest thing he’s ever done. “It will humble you and expose all the things that you need to improve on very quickly,” he said. The business also provides a platform for inspiring sons Kyle, Kaden, and Kolby as well as his employees. “It allows me to speak life into the people that work within my company, and to motivate and help them to grow,” he said. James doesn’t regret his rough start in life. “I needed that part of my story to become the person that I’m becoming,” he said. “Whatever happened in the past has no bearing on what you can do in the future. You can make something better of your life, and I hope that’s what people see.”

Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance.
