According to James Mills, Sales and Inventory Control Manager, “Most of them are V6 and they’ll get 20 mpg in town and 26 or 27 on the highway. It makes a great truck for the person that doesn’t have to haul horses or backhoes. You’ll still be able to haul your lawnmower and make a Home Depot run. It’ll tow 7,000 pounds, so that’s pretty good for a midsize truck.”

Griffin,

A base model V6 crew cab Colorado starts around $30,000. Even at a base model it will come with automatic transmission, power windows and locks, tilt, cruise control, a backup camera, OnStar. “It’s a good looking truck,” said James.

James says that it’s more than just gas mileage. The Chevrolet Colorado also offers OnStar and other safety features like ABS brakes, back up cameras, and airbags.

James recently had a customer choose to buy a Colorado because of the doorway headroom and space inside. His customer had been hitting his head while trying to get into his old truck of a different make and model. The Chevrolet Colorado was roomier inside, and it also offered his customer either a 60” bed or a long box with 70” bed.

The best way to ensure you get a Chevrolet Colorado is to put a $500 deposit down either on your custom order or on one that is slated to arrive from the factory shortly. According to James, 65% of purchases of the Chevrolet Colorado at Cronic are being made that way right now. Lucky shoppers may be able to test drive one that is not pre-ordered.

Custom orders allow drivers to choose exactly what they want on their Colorado, from color to features. It typically takes 12 to 15 weeks for a custom order to arrive. One of the dealership’s clients special orders the Chevrolet Colorado from Cronic for their fleet of 75+ vehicles. He says his customer can tell who drives a Colorado and who is driving a full size truck just by looking at the fuel bills. The Colorado is a cost saver.

What about fashion trends other than in the clothing industry? I don't know about you, but I have not seen a lot of bust making classes in my area. It may be your niche but I would argue it peaked about 600 years ago. Historical? Yes. Fashionable? No. Maybe it will come around again, but popular art trends right now include things like unique statement pieces on simple backgrounds or color blocking. Check out Mike Sluder's art for statement pieces that compliment any decor.  Picture being in a dark dimly lit room compared to an open concept room with natural light coming through large windows. It can change the entire mood of your home. You can even supplement rooms that need that extra light with fashion-forward trendy light fixtures. Find your style with The Lighting Studio. Learn to use light in a fashionable way.  Some older photography trends were limited to the mobility and capa bilities of their camera. When cameras first came out they were expensive and only used by those that were financially well off. Nowadays, I would argue we have almost too many options, and too many resources and the majority of them are affordable. How many times a day do you see your Facebook friend post a mediocre picture of the boxed dinner they made last night? It takes a talented photographer like Stephen Wilson to stand out in the fashion world. He knows how to use space, lighting, clothing, and art to make the photos in your house compliment your style. What's your style? This month's issue is dedicated to exploring that. Have you ever pondered the difference between fashion and style? Is there a difference? Am I the only one that has had this shower- thought? Well, hold my thrifted-purse while I explain. Fashion is always changing. While flapper dresses were once popular in the 1920s, you won't find them nowadays at your local TJ Maxx. In fact, you only really see them as costumes portraying the 1920s. Even my mom's scrunchies I made fun of 20 years ago, I now borrow for my own personal use. Style is personal and a means of self-expression. Barbie's pink house probably doesn't appeal to the biker dude you saw getting in a fight at your local pub last night (or maybe that is his style, who are we to judge?).

From the greeting by Yorkie shop dog, Moose, to the peaceful environment, small-town charm comes nat urally at The Lighting Studio in downtown Senoia. But don’t be fooled, the big city has nothing on this lighting studio. It provides a wide selection of premium designs and lives up to its slogan, ‘Small town charm meets big city design.’

The Lighting Studio in Senoia brings big city design to the south side.

Susan’s one-on-one design service, which can include lighting a whole house inside and out, including landscape lighting, is comprehensive and fun, taking all areas of the home into account.

Whether it’s reviewing lighting plans to select fixtures for an entire home, business or only one new fixture, Susan says, “We can fit any budget.” The Lighting Studio sells a wide selection of lighting fixtures and with the farmhouse style beginning to wane, Susan is seeing styles return to classic, time less looks that won’t be out of style within a year. The Lighting Studio also sells fine gifts as well as artwork, accent furniture, rugs, and other home décor items.  Although Susan is not an interior designer, she enjoys helping customers with spatial planning and selecting pieces that complement their home’s décor.

Owner and certified lighting designer  Susan Erwin has a God-given gift to make things beautiful and enjoys helping resi dential and commercial customers choose their lighting, while avoiding the pitfalls that can come with shopping on websites or at big-box stores.

"It's not unusual for a wholehouse customer to spend all day working with us on choosing the lighting for their new home," Susan said.  Susan believes that lighting is a crucial part of planning a new home or remodeling project and provides personal service and extensive knowledge of lighting a space.  She believes that no matter how nice a room is or how expensive the furniture is, it’s not com plete without proper lighting.  “It brings a space to life,” she said. As important as lighting is as a design element, Susan said lighting also affects mood, productivity, and even children’s learning environments.

In 2020, Susan expanded the store to include a Visual Comfort gallery. They are the only gallery south of Atlanta that showcases this signature, designer lighting.

It isn't every day that something like good handwriting can lead to a career.  “I had really good handwriting,” Susan recalled. Someone suggested that trait would make her a good draftsman, so in the 80s she took a job as an elec trical drafter with an engineering firm that did major commercial projects all over the world.

“It really appealed to me taking a blank piece of paper and turning it into a drawing they would build a new building by,” she said.  Susan learned about architectural lighting while working with a lighting specialist at the firm. Susan left the firm after her first husband passed away and worked in lighting consulting and sales for a time.  During her career, she garnered awards for lighting major projects including the UPS headquarters in Alpharetta and the Adidas hospitality facility for the 1996 AtlantaSusanOlympics.remarried in 2004, and she and her husband Mike later bought an electrical sup ply store in Thomaston. Susan took half of the storefront and turned it into a small lighting showroom called The Lighting Studio in 2012.  In 2017, the couple decided to move the business to Senoia. They reopened The Lighting Studio on Barnes Street in the small town, which has experienced incredible growth. “I really do love being in downtown Senoia and being part of this community,” Susan said. “The business exploded after I got to Senoia.” In Senoia, the couple found not only the perfect home for The Lighting Studio, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this October, but they also found one for themselves.

Stephen Wilson, Peachtree City native and owner of South Atlanta Photography, came to professional photography in a most unique way. Stephen gradu ated from McIntosh High School excited to start his undergrad at the University of Central Florida (UCF). He set out with the intention to become a graphic designer, but a painting class Stephen took as an elec tive opened a door to different creative opportuni ties. "The teacher saw something in me. She took her advanced painting students to New York and invited me to go and see what it was all about. We visited a hundred galleries." At the time, New York City (NYC)

was universally considered the art capital of the world. Stephen left UCF with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Inpainting.2005,art fairs were popping up everywhere and people were investing tons of money into a booming art market. Students from grad school were being picked up by top NYC galleries and within five years, were selling single paintings for what some people make in an entire year. It was the potential for what was possible, and the desire to be in the center of it all, that led Stephen to Parsons The New School in downtown Manhattan. A visit to the Parsons Career

That said, South Atlanta Photography is ramping up with senior photos. They have just a few weekends left so schedule yours soon. Visit southatlantaphotogra phy.com and follow them on Instagram @ southatlantaphotography

For Stephen, "Being an entrepreneur is simultaneously super rewarding. You've done all the work and you've created some thing great, and someone pays you for that work. There's an adrenaline rush, but when things go sideways and they're not working out, the stress can pile up. Being an entre preneur is great and I love making my own schedule and deciding what kind of work I want to pursue."

Stephen shares professional advice for photographers new to the industry, "When you first start out, learn your craft. Shoot as much as possible. Learn what your cam era can do and what you like to do. While you're learning, don't charge anything. Go out and create what you want to create and not be beholden to a client. Do free work with the caveat that you don't owe anyone anything. Experiment. Figure out what you want to do before you start charging people. Get some business education and work smarter not harder. Don't leave money on the table and charge what your services are worth."

It was not long before Stephen's interest in painting began to wane, and photog raphy took the forefront. After earning a Master of Fine Arts at Parsons, he began his creative career in fashion advertis ing, contributing to global campaigns for brands like Banana Republic, Brooks Brothers and Jimmy Choo.

FASHION FORWARD | STYLE + BEAUTY Center landed Stephen an internship at one of the top ad agencies in the world for Fashion Advertising. This, in its masterful orchestration, exposed him to some of the top names in the creative world.

“Getting to the heart of who they are, I prefer to have the most real, interactiontruestwithsomebodyIpossiblycan.”

26

Stephen worked in New York for 10 years, having photos published at Elle.com, The New York Times, Style.com, and Vogue.com.

Stephen's clients have included household names like Jo Malone London, Lululemon, and Mercedes Benz.

Stephen's photography is distinguished by how he engages with and immerses him self in the subject. "Getting to the heart of who they are, I prefer to have the most real, truest interaction with somebody I possi bly can." It became clear early on how much Stephen needs the personal, human inter action - conversation, collaboration and partnership - to create absolutely amazing photos. "Creating a moment of a shared experienced. This is at the heart of what I want to do and why I do photography."

In addition to running the studio at South Atlanta Photography, Stephen is currently an adjunct professor at the Creative Circus, a portfolio school for creative careers in Atlanta. His creative expression extends to gardening as well.

"It's related to photography when you actually get to see or hold the end prod uct. That is a real, fulfilling thing for me in my life now. Having something that I can create with my hands; having done physi cal labor and have an actual payoff at the end that is physical as well."

ARTIST’S PALETTE | ARTS + CULTURE The Artistry Of Metal Local artist turns bronze and copper into unique works of art. ARTICLE BY SUSAN WALWORTH PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 30

With an aversion to numbers and precise measurements, metal became his preferred medium. “I like metal because it’s forgiving in a way. It doesn’t require the same precision as wood, which requires specific cuts.”

Not only does Mike add patina to his pieces, but he has also added patina to notable works by other artists across the country, including the bronze Martin Luther King, Jr. statue near MercedesBenz Stadium. He was also chosen to sculpt pieces to restore the historic fountain in Atlanta’s Grant Park. Mike’s art has appeared in national and international exhibitions and publications as well as in the Museum of Design Atlanta. Although he had a gallery in Atlanta for a time, he moved about six years ago to Peachtree City where he lives with his wife, Sarah, and sons, Bennett and Grady.

Mike credits his father, who worked as a photographer for The Charlotte Observer, with encouraging him to pursue his dream and teaching him to recognize the beauty in everything from rocks to manhole covers. While many parents encourage their children to pursue more traditional occupations, Mike said about his dad, “He never pushed me to do anything but what I wanted to do, which was art. He showed me how you can use your creativity to make a living.”

Drawn to three-dimensional objects, Mike, who earned his art degree from East Carolina University, enjoyed drawing shoes when he was young, but he knew he wanted to do sculpture. “I like to interact with objects versus flat surfaces.”

31| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/FAYETTECOUNTYSEPTEMBER 2022

Mike Sluder’s unique art is produced with inspiration as well as perspiration. Tiny scars on his arms testify that the beautiful pieces he creates from bronze and copper require the welders, grinders, sandblasters, and blow torches he uses inside his hot and grimy Fayetteville workshop. Being an artist may be a harder route than more traditional jobs, but Mike has no regrets. “I love what I’m doing,” he said.

Inspired by nature, Mike particularly enjoys the juxtaposition of the strength of bronze against organic, flowing forms. For many of his sculptural pieces, he envisions things that hold life, such as a flower vase, or a bowl that holds food and brings peo ple together. Although each piece is unique, they all relate to his recognizable style.  Instead of drawing his pieces before he begins, Mike lets the materials guide him, beginning with a wax sculpture. After the wax is coated in a ceramic shell, it is cast and sandblasted. Labor intensive, his bronze pieces usually take at least six weeks to complete. Before his artwork is lacquered and waxed, Mike adds patina—his favorite step in the process and something he learned while working in a Florida foundry. As an accomplished patineur, he ‘paints’ using fire and chemicals to speed up the natural oxida tion process. “Adding patina is when it (the piece) really comes to life,” he said.

32

Now, Mike often exhibits his work at art shows and festi vals. Most of his buyers are individual collectors, although his customers have included The Ritz-Carlton and Hilton Hotel companies, restaurants, and corporate offices. Saying that mass-produced art usually winds up donated to thrift stores, Mike believes original art is a good investment and has seen his pieces, which start at about $350, increase in value.   Mike dreams of doing something on a monumental scale— public, outdoor work.  And he would like to see it in Fayette County where he said there is a void of culture and art. “People don’t realize the positive economic impact that art can have,” he said.  “There are a lot of people interested in the arts [in Fayette County], but they don’t really have a place to see it or do it. It would be cool to feel like I didn’t have to leave my com munity to sell or display my work.”

Promise Place aims to prevent domestic violence. The education classes have been pivotal to teach youth what the Ashley Williams, Executive Director

When Ashley Williams was going through what she went through, she didn't know places like Promise Place existed. "No one looks at the verbal, the mental, and the financial abuse that happens in domestic violence situa tions. That's why education is extremely important, and Promise Place provides that - not only to the clients that come in, but to students and the community. We start in middle schools educating about dating violence. We ensure there's an awareness so people understand what it is, and for those who are experiencing it, they know there's a place that offers help. Domestic violence has nothing to do with race, ethnicity, class, or gender. It breaks social, economic barriers and status - none of these matter. Anyone can be a victim."

Fayette County is the largest county Promise Place serves. However, the footprint of the organization is deep and extends beyond Fayette County. Expanded domestic violence services began in 2004 throughout the Griffin Judicial circuit to include Spalding, Pike and Upson coun ties. Promise Place opened the first domestic violence shelter in 2007. Today the organization has an office in each of the four counties in the judicial circuit and provides services to over 3,000 individuals per year through emergency shelter, a 24-hour emergency hotline, legal advocacy, weekly sup port groups, relocation assistance, financial assistance, crisis counseling, safety planning, a teen dating violence prevention program in all area's high schools, follow up services and community education. The 24-hour crisis hotline, 770-460-1604 , is answered by trained staff and volunteers providing crisis counseling, support and information to callers in need of domestic violence services. Someone is always available to listen whether the caller is ready to leave or just wanting to talk. If shelter is needed, the crisis hotline will work with the victim to get them to the shelter. Oftentimes, the victim arrives to the shelter with just the clothes on their back and the money in their pocket.

Promise Place has a new executive director, and as a survi vor of domestic violence, Ashley Williams is grateful. "To be able to work with an agency and staff who are dedicated to a population of which I am a part of, means so much to me. It's what made it right for me. I have the passion and dedication to serve those who are like me."

Promise Place, originally named The Fayette County Council on Battered Women, was incorporated in 1987. With just two women and a pager used as a crisis num ber, they diligently sought to help women in crisis. Through the addition of many volunteers, the organiza tion grew and the name was changed to Fayette County Council on Domestic Violence.

In the 1990s, a building donated to the organization was renovated with start-up funding from the Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation and became a transi tional house, called 'Lighthouse', for women and chil dren in crisis. This house of five apartments, provided refuge where women and children fleeing abuse could stay for up to 18 months.

Nick Rider has served on the organization's Board for the past six years and is currently Past Chair. "Domestic Violence is prevalent in our county and in our communi ties. It breaks all of those social, economic and gender barriers. It's not selective. We need people to be watching, to be listening, to be willing to help if needed, to remember that Promise Place is here for that - to help individuals who are in that position, come out of that position."

early signs of domestic violence look like. Early signs that can lead to emotional distress, which in turn may lead to creating a domestic violence situation, include but are not limited to: withholding financial resources and information, not being allowed to leave the house, restricting travel, controlling transportation, and having aggressive conversations. It's not just physical violence, and Promise Place is more than a shelter.

While the bulk of the organization's funding comes from government grants, support from local businesses, churches and individuals is a welcome and needed resource. Promise Place's current Board Chair Jamie Meyer, humbly extends gratitude on behalf of the organization.

LEARN MORE: This year marks the 18th year for Promise Place’s signature event, the Domestic Violence Run, which is held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. As clients transition through emergency/temporary housing to safe permanent housing, there is continuous need for household essentials, such as bedding, white towels and face rags, pots and pans, new pillows, and per sonal hygiene kits. These items, as well as women's clothes, purses and other accessories can be delivered to their main office on Thursdays. Tips for Men Suffering from Varicose Veins

2. More Than a Cosmetic Problem

www.trufflesveinspecialists.com | 874

It is estimated that 58 million Americans currently have varicose veins, and as many as 45% of men atnd 55% of women will suffer from them at some point in their lives. You may carry the gene, but with the help of medical professionals, anyone can fix their varicose veins quickly and efficiently.

1. You’re Not Alone

Men want clean and clear legs, too.

While they may seem like nothing more than a harmless cosmetic issue, varicose veins can be highly dangerous. These dilated, twisted blood vessels swell when faulty valves restrict blood flow from the legs to the heart, causing discomfort, swelling, and even ulceration in more severe cases.

3. Simple Lifestyle Changes Can Help Elevating your legs while resting and avoiding extended standing or sitting can alleviate the symptoms of varicose veins, while frequent walks, healthy meals, and proper hydration will stimulate blood flow and decrease inflammation.

4. You Have Treatment Options Remember varicose veins are a sign of venous disease. Venous disease is progressive and will only get worse, so talk to a vein specialist about the best option for your condition. Minimally invasive procedures can help begin the healing process. Vein ablation success rates range from 93 to 95%. West Lanier Ave, Ste 220 Fayetteville, GA 30214 Call us at (678) 833-1444
