As summer begins to wind down and the start of school commences, the carefree days of slower morning routines and spending time adventuring are exchanged for busier school days, sports routines, and schedules. The summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, but the simple pleasures of summer never get old. Although the routine of school for our children is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, it is generally a little bittersweet. In my hometown of Palatine, IL, we didn't start the school year until the last week of August which gave us another few weeks of glorious summertime fun. Fayette County does things a little differently with more time off during the year and less time during the summers. Not a fan of that, but c'est la vie. Just because school starts in the first week of August, doesn't mean that we can't have family fun later in the day, once homework is completed, of course. Maybe make the last days of summer really count and plan something you've never done before? Walk to the top of Stone Mountain or white water raft on the Ocoee. Take one last weekend trip to an island on the coast that you've never been to, or go big and take a helicopter ride over Atlanta. My husband surprised me with a nighttime flight over the city and it was one of the best experiences, I highly recommend it! As summer comes to a close, we hope you are able to relax, make it count, and spend time with the ones you love.

Who knew that canna lilies attract June bugs or that what grows in the dark rich soil in Savannah may not grow in the red clay dirt in Atlanta? It seems that geography is everything when it comes to gardening and the balance of nature is important to all life. Such is true for Fayette County as we benefit from the mission of the Fayette Master Gardener Association (FMGA) to add beauty and horticultural knowledge to our community.

Master gardeners, friends of master gardeners, and anyone who has an interest in horticulture, make up the membership of this lush and ever-blooming organization. Carol Gordon, FMGA's past president and current recording secretary, proudly shares, "We have young people who are just learning. Our youngest member just graduated from high school and plans to study horticulture in college." The FMGA provides volunteers and financial aid for projects that meet their fundamental values of volunteerism and education. These projects make a difference in our community by promoting selfless service in community beautification and extending horticultural opportunities to all in Fayette County. Myriam Cousin, FMGA's current president, emphasizes the significance of the organization's efforts. "We work hard to educate people and to create beauty in the community. We provide opportunities for people to be inspired." Since its inception in 2008, FMGA continues to operate solely by volunteers. The absence of paid staff instills a high degree of ownership to provide exceptional educational programs and meaningful membership experiences. The flower garden planted directly in front of the downtown Fayetteville mural is just one example of how FMGA beautifully impacts our community. FMGA hosts monthly meetings that include lectures highlighting various gardening interests. These lectures are free and open to the public. Join them at 225 Willowbend Road in Peachtree City at 10 AM for an exciting lineup in August and September. August 16 - Speaker: Rose Guerra, Atlanta Naturalist & Environmental Educator. Topic: Dragonflies 101 Basics and fun facts about dragonflies with a focus on those most common in our area. Covers gardening to attract these jewel-like, mosquito-eating machines. September 20 - Speaker: Larry Dove, owner and operator of Two Doves Farms in Fayetteville. Topic: What to Plant When You Are Growing Nothing - Using Cover Crops to Regenerate Soil. Local schools and youth-serving organizations can apply for grants to fund horticultural projects. FMGA works with grant recipients to help make proper selections on what to plant and how, and to ensure good stewardship of funds. The organization's annual fundraisers are community favorites; the Plant Sale held in April, and the Garden Tour held in May. Engineering is the process to solve real-world problems using technology, a process that touches every facet of our lives. Each day, engineers take technologies developed in laboratories and find ways to use them to create new products and services that drive our economy and raise the standard of living for people across the world. That is precisely why The Ginn Group, based in Peachtree City, started a new division focused on engineering and professional services – INGITEQ. Combining ingenuity and technology, INGITEQ provides quality, responsive, and cost-effective services and solutions empowering innovation for their commercial, state/local government, and federal government customers. While a new operation, the INGITEQ team has a rich experience in applying technology across major industries including aerospace, agribusiness, defense, energy, nuclear, food and beverage processing, manufacturing, petrochemical, and electronic systems. Let’s take a look at a few examples of real-world applications of these technologies. On March 11, 2011, an earthquake off Japan's coast caused a tsunami that severely damaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear facility, resulting in the melt-down of the nuclear reactors. Part of the engineering team for the clean-up was INGITEQ Chief Engineer Zack Woodis, who developed specialized filtration systems to remove the radioactive cesium from wastewater in the plant. Zack provided his design expertise in electrical systems to support the onsite integration of the filtration systems. He also provided ongoing support to troubleshoot the system operations and provided controls design support for the remote manipulator for the cleanup of the onsite cesium holding tanks.

Changing Lives at Both Ends of the Leash TAILS OF HOPE Home alone with her young daughters, BellaRae and Jakie, Danielle DeLeon had already texted her husband, Connor, that she wasn’t feeling well. When she stood to make lunch, her German shepherd, Echo, jumped on her, giving her no choice but to go to the floor where she passed out. Her daughters didn’t know what to do, but Echo did. She lay across Danielle’s legs providing deep pressure therapy to help push the blood back toward her heart and brain. Once Danielle was conscious, Echo fetched the medication that lowers Danielle’s heart rate and then retrieved her phone. It was one of many times that Danielle credits her service dog Echo with coming to her rescue. Danielle has postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or POTS—a condition that causes the heart rate to skyrocket and blood pressure to drop during position changes, such as sitting to standing. With her keen sense of smell, Echo detects the hormone that increases heart rate. She alerts Danielle by jumping on her, something she does at no other time so that Danielle knows to sit or lie down. Otherwise, she risks concussions from passing out and hitting her head when she falls. “Echo has saved my life literally more times than I can count,” Danielle said. She received Echo through Tails of Hope; a division of the non-profit dog and cat rescue organization Coco’s Cupboard.

Echo was one of four sick, neglected puppies crammed into a small crate and surrendered by a backyard breeder. Like many of Coco’s Cupboard rescues that exhibit potential, all four, once healthy, were trained as service dogs through Tails of Hope, which processes requests for service dogs and companion animals and provides support and training. Danielle, who lives in Tyrone, is also a Tails of Hope coach. In addition to teaching dogs their tasks, she schedules outings to grocery stores and movie theaters to help service dog owners gain confidence, and conditions their dogs to be calm around sirens and rescue vehicles.

Recently, Danielle received her second Tails of Hope service dog, Jinx—a breeder-donated German shepherd. Once trained, Jinx will allow Echo to retire. “She’s been working her whole life, and I would like to give her some time to be just a dog,” Danielle said. She tears up explaining what these dogs have meant to her. “Having my service dogs has allowed me so much more freedom,” she said. “It takes a lot of fear off of my kids and my husband, and it brought me more family and a support system with Tails of Hope.”

COCO’S CUPBOARD In the abandoned halls of the old McCrary School in Gay, GA, the echoes of children’s voices and laughter had dissipated, but the old school is no longer silent. Today, it’s filled with the hopeful barks and meows of animals given a second chance. An army of volunteers has turned the decrepit 26,000-square-foot structure, vacant for decades, into a facility for Coco’s Cupboard. “The school kind of fits our whole mission,” said Todd Johnston, Tails of Hope president. “It was abandoned and cast aside just like the dogs and the people we help with service dogs. It all fits together.” Coco’s Cupboard was scheduled to move into the school in July. “It’s taken a lot of love to get it ready,” said Suzanne Aaron, Coco’s Cupboard president. Before, Coco’s Cupboard relied on a huge network of fosters. Although it will still depend on fosters, most dogs will now be housed at the school. “We believe in socializing and open play,” Suzanne said, adding that the dogs will have a big, beautiful yard to play in and even a pool. Inside, former classrooms have been divided into large kennels, a cat room, a media and training center, and offices. Now a trailer

provides a place for someone to stay on the campus 24 hours a day, but future renovations will include adding a groundskeeper’s suite inside the school. Most importantly, the new facility provides a place the public can visit. “Our goal is to have it be an education center—a real school,” Suzanne said, adding that it will also be a home for service dog training. Named for the first dog rescued, Coco’s Cupboard began in 2011 and serves the Southern Crescent—primarily Fayette and Pike counties. It began as a food pantry for pets so that people in need could keep their pets instead of surrendering them. Thanks to the generosity of volunteers and the community, Coco’s Cupboard donated almost 15,000 pounds of pet food last year. “When we put out an SOS, our community is second to none, whether it’s physical donations or monetary donations,” volunteer Laura King said. Coco’s Cupboard also has a program that helps pet owners in underprivileged areas with spaying and neutering, medical care, and food. There is also a group of volunteers who take rescue pups to nursing homes and colleges to brighten people’s days.

Last year, Coco’s Cupboard adopted out 362 cats and 222 dogs. About 65 dogs and 100 cats are in the organization’s care at any given time and include many owner surrenders. Suzanne said, “We get hundreds of requests every week for owner surrender. It’s overwhelming.” Although there are many great rescue organizations in the area, Suzanne said the people element sets Coco’s Cupboard apart by ministering to people as well as animals, or as the Tails of Hope slogan says, ‘changing lives at both ends of the leash.’ The entire Coco’s Cupboard community is based on the pay it forward program. Many of the volunteers needed Coco’s Cupboard for something at one point. “We gave, and now they’re giving,” Suzanne said. “It continues to grow and feed a bigger network. ”Whether it’s walking a dog or hanging out with the cats, Laura said, “We have a job for every person, and they truly become part of our family.” Suzanne agrees. “It feeds your soul,” she said. They played outdoors for hours with friends, balls, jump ropes, buckets, chalk, bicycles, you name it! The level of creativity saw no limits in the minds of these children. While some families have plans for getaway

vacations, there are those planning to stay home and scrambling for things their children can do. We’d like to share some ideas that don’t include technology or cost a boat load of money for that matter. The benefits of spending time outdoors and unplugged outweigh complaints about temperature or those annoying creepy crawlers. The added bonus is that

many outdoor games secretly teach life skills. Technology is used only to confirm game rules. Ready or not, it’s time to play! A day - or two or three - full of outdoor games will invoke a trip down memory lane for some adults, or a “this is great” thought for others. In either case, playing these games has tremendous benefits - young people can fully embrace human connection, get a

break from the instant gratification associated with technical devices and social media, and enjoy some good wholesome, age-appropriate fun. Many adults admit they played many of their favorite childhood games well into their teen years, and still others say they relish in a good game of dodgeball or tug of war today. This list is not all-inclusive, but it certainly gets the games started!

CHILDHOOD GAMES • Dodgeball - team sport in which players on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents, while avoid being hit themselves. Consider water balloons instead of balls on a hot day. • Tug of War - contest between two teams at opposite ends of a rope; each team trying to drag the other across a center line. • Freeze Tag - each player freezes when tagged and can be unfrozen only by a player who is not yet frozen. Game ends when all players are frozen. • Red Light Green Light - shout "green light" and all players run towards you, shout "yellow light" and they are allowed to walk, but when "red light" is shouted, they must stop and freeze. If player moves at "red light", they go back to start line. • Musical Chairs - walk to music around a group of chairs containing one chair fewer than number of players, and rush to sit down when music stops. They player left standing in each round is eliminated. • Sack Race - stand in your sack, hold on to the top of your sack and hop as fast as you can to the finish line! • Kick the Can - find players in their hiding spots and put them in "jail". Once a player is "jailed" the only way to be freed is for another player to beat the "IT" person to the can and kick it. There are more great outdoor games. Get unplugged and get outside! Dr. Brian Bragassa is making braces cool and giving back to his community.

Unlike a pony or a trampoline, getting braces has never really been something kids asked for while writing letters to Santa, but most kids need some sort of orthodontic treatment at some point in their lives. Dr. Brian Bragassa at Peachtree City Orthodontics makes having braces cool. Brian had extensive orthodontic treatment, wearing braces and headgear from 8 - 10 years old and then a 2nd round of braces at 14. “As far as orthodontics goes, I was a hot mess.” Both of his orthodontists had built great businesses and were so kind, knowledgeable, and so good at what they did that it intrigued him. “They made it possible for me to have a confident smile. When anyone asks me why I became an orthodontist, it’s because they changed my life,” Brian remarked. “My dad always encouraged me to be entrepreneurial and own my own business and I thought, ‘I could do this.’” Before starting college, Brian was considering being either a physician or a dentist but wasn’t quite sure which would be the best choice. After serving on a mission trip where he got to work with both medical and dental teams providing services to the underserved, dentistry was the clear winner. The dental work he got to contribute to allowed him to work with his hands. “I’ve always been good at working with my hands and dentistry was the perfect blend of engineering and science. I’m engineering smiles, essentially.” In the summer of 2006, just before starting dental school, he decided to apply for the Health Profession Scholarship with the Air Force and started Officer Training School. He became reserve status for 4 years during dental school, then went on active duty and served in the Air Force as a dentist. In 2015, Brian started his orthodontic residency at the University of North Carolina. When that

was completed, Brian and his wife Michelle, who grew up in Peachtree City, decided to move their young family here to start his business. Brian feels that spending time with and educating his patients and their parents is the most important part of his business. “Taking the time to talk to parents about their child’s needs, I feel, makes them feel valued and they are.” Most conditions that may require orthodontics start around 7 years of age. Dr. Bragassa and his team offer a 7-UP Club where they start seeing kids at 7 and can make a plan to condition the orthodontic health of their patients at an early age. Brian believes that conservative intervention at an early age is important. “Don’t underestimate the power of a smile. A confident smile is going to help your self-esteem. It’s going to open doors. People benefit from orthodontics, of course, because it will help you maintain a healthy bite, but the main reason orthodontics is key is that it helps you have a confident smile.” Brian, his wife, Michelle, and their entire team of professionals consistently give their time and resources to the community and feel that giving back is important. They have volunteered at places like Midwest Food Bank and regularly support another local nonprofit, Harts of Teal, which provides ovarian cancer early intervention education. “The cool thing is we want to become more and more a part of our community. The rewarding aspect to me is to give back. I mean, we’re building batting cages at Peachtree City Little League. My kids play there and they asked me for help and I’m like, ‘sure’!
