So he decided, ‘Let me find something that’s budget friendly and good on gas.’ I’m seeing a lot of people doing that, in a sense, realigning their finances,” said JC. Welcome to the 2022 Men's Issue featuring our PhenoMENal Men of Fayette. My lovely wife says to me (2 days prior to the deadline, mind you) "You're a man. You should write the Lifestyle Letter this month!" Huh, what??? So I'm as surprised as you to find me here. First, kudos to these truly phenomenal men in this month's issue. After learning about and having a chance to visit with each of them, I can tell you that we are lucky to have them in our community. We hope that you enjoy reading their stories, and we'd love to hear your stories. We invite you to connect with us on Facebook and Instagram and tell us about a special man in your life. The best news is this, there are many more phenomenal men hereabouts! You probably know some yourself. They're the dads, grandfathers, uncles and brothers; the neighbors and business owners; the men that you deal with each day who live, work and play in our community. Each month, we're honored to bring you stories about the people who make Fayette County such a special place to live. June 19th is Father's Day, and we want to send warm wishes to all the Fathers of Fayette County. This will be my eleventh year celebrating my special day with the little angel pictured above. It is also my tenth Father's Day since the loss of my son, Matthew. No parent should lose a child. It upsets the natural order. I want to encourage you to consider those men who have lost a child this Father's Day. I can tell you that it leaves a huge gaping hole in their heart. So give hugs to your PhnoMENal Men. They may sometimes seem rough and callous on the outside, but rest assured, they've all got squishy marshmallow centers when it comes to their kids!

It’s been almost a year since Clothes Less Traveled (CLT) revealed a vibrant new color palette and fresh logo design. Staff and volunteers are proud of the organization’s fresh new look, and the words that embody the heart and soul of the organization - We Love Our Community. It’s been 25 years since CLT’s inception, and the organization continues to have multi-level impact throughout the community. From the thrift shop to granting funds, and everything in between, CLT is empowering change in our community. While the pandemic caused CLT to pause, the organization remained strong in its desire and efforts to remain true to its mission. Granting funds and partnering with local agencies are at the heart of CLT. Store Manager Tameka O’Neal shares, “There’s no way our organization would function without love for the community and the passion everyone has for giving back and making sure that every aspect of this operation is solely for that purpose. This is what drives our volunteers and our staff; collectively it’s what makes us.” CLT’s ability to give back - by way of grants, scholarships and vouchers - is supported by generous donors, cheerful volunteers, and thoughtful shoppers. After a two-year pause, CLT was excited to open its grant application in February. The organization’s Grants Committee worked hard in preparation for what would be the launch of a revised Grants Program. The desire to have greater impact resulted in a more focused service area - Fayette and Coweta counties - and the addition of agency site visits as part of the application process. The opportunity to get to know potential grantee partners better, and for them to get to know CLT, was met with optimism and gratitude. CLT congratulates the following agencies selected to receive funds for the 2022 grants process:

The excitement continues with the granting of two inaugural awards. The CLT Founders Grant, established to honor the legacy created by the organization’s founders, Joan Velsmid and Mary Ann Cox, will be granted annually to St. Vincent de Paul. The Dick Allis Award honors the significant contributions and longevity of CLT volunteer Dick Allis and will be awarded through CLT’s Scholarship Program to the scholarship recipient with the most volunteer hours. CLT’s new Chief Impact Officer, Kimber Huff, looks forwards to cultivating relationships with our grantee partners and others throughout the community. Barbara Harrison is the chair of the organization’s governing body, and she gives perspective on what’s next for CLT. “I am excited about the growth and future of CLT. As we honor our organization’s history, it’s important that we thrive and grow as we expand into the future. I believe we have many areas of opportunity and potential for that. Adding some fresh color to the walls is a no-brainer, especially if you want your garage to double as a game room, hobby, exercise or gathering space. Coordinate the color with the rest of your home or create a unique space with a character all its own. Oil-based paints offer superior durability, but cleanup is a hassle. the higher sheens of eggshell or semi-gloss are more apt to show surface imperfections, they are more resistant to scuffs and are easier to wipe off. Also, consider a mildewcide additive if your garage is prone to moisture issues. Focus on the Floor Of course, the most prominent garage surface is the one that takes the most abuse — the floor. The best choices offer beauty that takes a beating. One option is polished concrete, which involves grinding the concrete to a high-gloss shine. This usually requires a contractor and floors with lots of imperfections may not be a good candidate. While attractive and durable, concrete can still be stained by oil and other chemicals. Epoxy coatings are another popular garage floor choice. Available through professional contractors and as DIY kits, easy-to-clean epoxy is available in many color choices but is prone to peeling after a few years. Planning Ahead Makes Good Sense

Have you ever considered what would happen to your children if you didn’t come home today? My daughter was two years old before I really thought about it. My wife and I, like most other parents, would leave our cell numbers with a babysitter but never thought about what would happen if we were in a car accident. When you leave your children with a babysitter whose contact information do you leave? Would they know what to do if you didn’t answer? Your sitter may call the police if something horrible happened, but I wondered what would the police do when confronted by a teenage babysitter caring for a minor child whose parents aren’t answering the phone. When I called the Sheriff’s office to inquire about that, I was told the children would be taken into custody by the Division of Family & Children’s Services. That may mean your children are put into foster care. Perhaps they wouldn’t be there long, but they would be in the care of strangers. For me, that was unacceptable and immediately revealed a huge gap in traditional estate planning. As a result, I implemented Kid’s Protection Planning, a holistic approach to planning for families with minor children. Bridge-builder, advocate, and community leader, Darryl Hicks’ passion for others is expressed in many ways. From serving on local and state boards to pursuing his desire to serve at a higher level, Darryl demonstrates a willingness to give of himself — time, talent and treasure — in the most meaningful ways. For those who benefit from his compassion, Darryl’s accomplishments attest to his philanthropic impact. Eighteen years ago, the school system here drew Darryl, and his wife Shirelle, to Fayette County. Born in Atlanta and raised in Reynolds, GA, this father of three holds true to his belief, “God put me on this earth to be a bridge-builder. I build bridges over chasms to help people cross.” In 2002 while in his role with Habitat for Humanity, Darryl was recognized by President George W. Bush as the “Outstanding Volunteer of Georgia”. While Darryl didn’t set out with political aspirations, he asked himself, “What state-wide offices can I run for that fit the managerial skills I’ve acquired?” The answer led Darryl to run for the Secretary of State seat in 2006, and a run for Labor Commissioner for the state in 2010. “I’m indifferent to people’s politics, I just want to know what it is, so I can help them.” As the current Chair of the Fayette County Development Authority, Darryl also serves on the Fayette County Board of Elections and was appointed by Governor Brian Kemp to serve on two state-wide boards — the Georgia Transparency & Campaign Finance Commission, and the Georgia Board of Used Motor Vehicle Dealers. Several other boards, committees, foundations, and advisory councils benefit from Darryl’s love of people and service. “God promised us that He will order our footsteps. It is a rarity to see an open seat at The Beirut in Peachtree City. The aromas of exotic herbs and spices from authentic Lebanese cooking greet your senses with a pleasant “slap” as soon as you open the door. Hadi Rabai, who has been working in restaurants since the age of fifteen, is the man behind the food. Hadi emigrated from Beirut, Lebanon to Ohio in 1994. In 2007, he moved to Fayette County to be near family. He brought with him a passion and drive to open a restaurant of his own. In 2010, his dream became a reality when he and his aunt, Fatima Hojaij, opened The Beirut. Their first few years were challenging and lean. With passion, hard work and determination, diners started to pour in, and in 2019, Hadi doubled the capacity of the restaurant by taking in the adjacent space. Hadi makes it clear that Fayette County is his home. He is grateful for family, friends and customers that have helped him to get the restaurant where it is today. Hadi is particularly proud of the loyalty of his employees. Many have been with him since the restaurant opened 12 years ago. There is a close, family-like atmosphere at The Beirut. “These people are my family, and my home is their home!” said Hadi. At gatherings in his own home, Hadi loves to cook and experiment with his Traeger Grill (he calls it “traegering”). His motto is to “slow down and enjoy what you’ve got.” This life philosophy allows him to spend time with his beautiful wife Farah and 2 young daughters. Mike Conaway’s warm smile and kind persona are the outward expression of a servant’s heart and strong faith in God. As Mike and his wife, Shirley, made their way from the Midwest to Fayette County, Georgia, Mike gained a great deal of life and business experience that equipped him for the many hats he would wear in service to the church, community, and his local charity — Healing Bridge Clinic. Mike was asked to serve on the Healing Bridge Clinic board of directors in 2014. His passion for service and impact was immediately evident, and it wasn’t long before Mike was board chair. When his term was about to expire, the governing body was not eager to let him go. In 2018, Mike accepted the opportunity to be the Executive Director of the Healing Bridge Clinic, becoming the organization’s first full-time employee. The Healing Bridge Clinic, a nonprofit since 2009, provides healthcare to the underserved people of central Georgia. The services offered

range from general medicine, orthopedic, chiropractic, dermatology, cardiology, behavioral health counseling, addiction counseling, podiatry, and chronic care management. To give perspective to the organization’s impact — $250,000 in medical care was provided in 2017, and an amazing $1.3 million in 2021. They’ve partnered with Telehealth to provide continuous service to their patients. “When our doors are not open, patients can be connected to a provider, giving the uninsured population 24-7 access to healthcare. This is huge for us.” Mike is grateful for what the organization can do for those who are unable to afford medical services but has plans to expand. Fueled by a passion for architecture discovered in a seventh-grade shop class, Jefferson Browne has made an indelible mark on Fayette County. A Maryland native, he came here with his wife Debbie 30 years ago to design a friend’s house in Peachtree City. “We never went back,” Browne said, adding they raised sons Derek, Alec and Huntington here. Through a stellar reputation, his firm has flourished and is now working on projects in 21 states. Browne’s Fayette County projects have touched the lives of many local residents. The list includes the Pavilion at Drake Field, the SMC3 and Peachtree Professional buildings in Peachtree City, the Treehouse and other Camp Southern Ground projects, several projects at Town at Trilith, Triumph Park’s adaptive reuse of existing buildings in Fayetteville, the Joseph Sams School and Bloom. His architectural firm also designed the treehouses for the television show Treehouse Masters. Browne’s firm uses 3D modeling and printing and has a virtual reality studio, which allows clients to walk through their designs before they’re built. “We look at nature, sustainability, wellness and evidence-based design principles to guide the process,” he said. Browne also wants to build structures that restore and regenerate. “I think that shelter and buildings should inspire and bring people hope,” he said, “I’ve been told by other people that our architectural styles influence this community. We feel really blessed.” After 40 years as an architect, Browne feels he’s nowhere near his potential. “I just want to get better and be ready for the next opportunities.” About 60 percent of Browne’s architectural projects are medical, which led to his involvement in medical missions where he personally witnessed people starving. “That really got to me. The passion and purpose that God put in my heart are to feed and sustain people,” This experience led Browne to begin researching alternative farming methods for indoor growing capable of producing multiple crops per year. From that, Alō Farms was born. The alternative farm grows leafy greens, microgreens, sprouts and fish and creates community around food security and nutrition.

Shrouded by gray prison walls, Jay Gardner found a pearl of great price in a humble string of beads made of paper and floor wax, an important part of his personal story of redemption. The discovery also led to Jay’s founding of Torn Pages, a nonprofit offering help to those imprisoned by difficult circumstances. “Everybody has torn pages in their lives,” Jay said, “There’s a world out there that needs to experience God’s hope, peace and strength.” Jay’s own torn pages began at an early age. Born in South Carolina to teen parents, he had lived in eight different states and Puerto Rico by the time he was 15. Struggles with drugs and alcohol began when he was only seven, nevertheless, he grew up to have a career in the Navy and became a champion boxer. By 1988, God had transformed his life. “I had two beautiful kids, a wife, a business, and a ministry,” he said. In 1994 Jay made plans to enter the seminary. The decision threw him into spiritual warfare. “It was beyond measure,” he said, “I thought God had abandoned me.” When his wife left him, Jay’s life fell apart. He returned to drugs and alcohol. “I lost my way,” he said, “That’s what addiction can do to people. I went on a crime spree and robbed some hotels and restaurants.” Jay, who said he had never been arrested before, was deemed “the gentleman bandit.” Detectives said some of his victims described him as friendly, cute, and someone they would hire for a job. Although Jay said he didn’t have a gun when committing the crimes, some of the victims believed he did, and he was charged with

armed robbery. In 1997, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison without the possibility of parole. “I turned my back on God,” he said, “it’s something I’m not proud of.” About three years into his sentence, Jay noticed a fellow inmate wearing a colorful bead necklace with a cross on it. He was mesmerized. After learning it was made of paper and floor wax, he bought it. “I had to have it. There are no gifts in prison and there are no colors in prison. Now I had me a gift.” Later that evening, Jay said God knocked on his heart and asked, “Do you know what you have?” Jay thought of grace and love, mercy and forgiveness, and what Jesus had done on the cross. But he said God drew his attention to the necklace and told him, “It’s a reflection of the pages that have been torn and ripped in your life.” “All my torn pages came up in my heart, and out of my eyes in tears,” Jay said. With 17 more years of prison ahead, he felt God was telling him, “I can take the torn pages of your life and create something beautiful.” Although Jay admits his walk with God was sidetracked at times, he learned to make the paper bead necklaces and bracelets and sent them out to touch

the lives of others. The Christian radio station he listened to even gave him an award for making a difference in people’s lives from his cell. Since his release about five years ago, Jay has built Torn Pages on four pillars of ministry. The primary pillar is to pass along the gift of hope, peace and strength to others going through life’s torn pages. Another pillar is to provide shelter, food, clothing, jobs and mentoring for those re-entering society after release from prison. To plan for this, Jay has met with Georgia Department of Corrections officials. A third ministry pillar is to provide a livelihood for people in third-world countries. Although Torn Page’s necklaces and bracelets are still made in prisons, Jay has also contracted with 28 women in three Uganda villages who are also making the jewelry. Torn Page’s fourth ministry pillar is to help other non-profits raise funds through the sale of their jewelry. Jay is living proof that torn pages can become something beautiful. “What the enemy meant for evil in our lives God used it for good to bring blessing to others.” For more information, visit tornpages.org.
