A Conversation With God This is an excerpt from a blog I wrote 10 years ago about our special needs daughter, Abby, who was born congenitally missing part of her brain. I was begging God to heal her. I felt inspired to share this with you. December 12, 2012 Have you ever had a conversation with God? Have you ever heard His voice so clearly that He might as well be sitting across the table from you with a cup of coffee? God spoke to me yesterday. He spoke to me so absolutely… so undoubtedly… it was like talking with my neighbor over the fence. I could hear Him and I knew He was there, I just couldn’t see Him. God: “Don’t think I don’t know what I’m doing.” Me: “Huh?” God: “Don’t think I don’t know what I’m doing!” Me: “Uh, well, I uhhh…. I - I don’t think You don’t know wh….” God: “Yes you do… you think I don’t know what I’m doing. You think you know what you’re doing, but you don’t. I know what I’m doing with Abby. I know how I made her. I know she is missing part of her brain. I made her that way. I made her that way for you. I made her that way for you and Byron.” Me: “Why in the world would You do something like that?!?” God: “She is missing part of her brain so you and Byron will see just what I can do with her…. what I will do through her. Don’t think I don’t know what I’m doing.” Me: " .” There was nothing to say. My eyes went Heavenward and my heart soared. What a promise! God knows what He’s doing. No missing piece of brain can stop Him. Rather, that missing piece of brain is His springboard to wonderful, beautiful, fabulous happenings because of His child, Abby. Fast forward 10 years. He inspired me to start a nonprofit and our first cottage to provide individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities a place to live independently opened this past May. I can see what He was doing then and I can see how He has used my daughter's disability to change lives forever through my nonprofit, Two Sparrows Village at Christian City. Consider the larger furniture pieces and keep that foundation neutral, but don’t be afraid to play with color or pattern with things like pillows, paint colors or wallpaper, carpets, or lamps... things that can be changed easily. WHAT IS THE HARDEST PART ABOUT BEING A FIREFIGHTER? I’m a recent dad and being away for 24 hours can get kind of hard. I always pitch to myself, “Every day is Friday here” because we always work one day, and then we are off two. So, it is pretty sweet but I would say that is one of the challenging parts.

WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART? The appreciation we get from citizens. They love us. They bring us food all the time. Just knowing that we are helping people. People call us on their worst days, unfortunately. So, knowing that we can come there and help them out and solve their problems is pretty rewarding. Another reason I chose this job is that I come in and every shift is different. It’s like every skill you learn you might have to put it on display today.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU? Right now my 11-month-old daughter. So, that is my easy motivation that wakes me up in the morning. Also, my beautiful wife who I met in college at the University of Cincinnati. Those are my two big motivators.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT WORKING WITH YOUR TEAM? We are all kind of like-minded. People might think we are crazy on the outside, but here we understand each other. We go through a lot of stuff together.

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING ON THE HOLIDAYS? This department in particular, we do a good job of communicating. You might have to make that sacrifice for that year, but even still we are here for 24 hours so our families come up here. You kind of don’t miss a beat, you just can’t be home, and if a call does drop you have to stop everything you’re doing and go to it.

WHY LAW ENFORCEMENT AS A CAREER? Being from Newark Jersey where the police are around, but not really around, I saw response time wasn’t what it should be and wondered where the gap was in my community. Shortly after college I was applying to police departments and the probation opportunity came through first, and when I look back on it now, it was a blessing. I went from probation to the jail to patrol officer in Peachtree City. It’s been important throughout my career to have the background of what happens when someone is on probation, and what it’s like for someone to be in jail.

DESCRIBE THE SACRIFICE OFFICERS MAKE, AND WHAT MAKES YOU WILLING TO MAKE IT. COMMUNITY — first and foremost, hands-down, I would say this community is why we are willing to make the sacrifice. Working in Peachtree City in Fayette County; the support we receive from the citizens here is amazing. It makes it easier to work on holidays. We have citizens who will come by and drop off food, cakes, and whatever else will make it that much easier to make the sacrifice. The citizens constantly make us aware that they support us and that they are here for us. They know that our job is difficult.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE WORKING ON HOLIDAYS WITH FAMILY AND HOME LIFE? All of my siblings and I have a public service role, so we check our schedules and figure out a day that works for the family. Whatever that day is becomes our Christmas or our Thanksgiving.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A NURSE, KNOWING THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO WORK ON HOLIDAYS? Nursing came later in life after I was married and had kids. At the time I went back to school I had already been working as a medical assistant in a physician’s office, but I wanted to do more—to be able to help make a difference in someone’s life. I honestly never thought about missing the holidays or even weekends with my family. We all need someone to be the nurse, doctor, police or other first responder.

WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT SHARING CHRISTMAS DAY WITH YOUR FAMILY? The biggest thing I miss is seeing everyone on that day. Regardless, if it’s my holiday to work or not, my family knows how important my job is to me, and we adjust accordingly. We may celebrate a day early or a day late.

HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE WITH YOUR WORK FAMILY ON CHRISTMAS DAY? At work, we still celebrate the holiday. We all bring our favorite side dishes and desserts. The hospital provides us with ham and turkey. On Christmas, we have secret Santa for anyone that wants to participate. It is a nice way to brighten the day during, what could be, a bad day or situation.

DO YOU RECALL A TIME THAT WORKING ON CHRISTMAS WAS ESPECIALLY WORTHWHILE BECAUSE OF SOMEONE YOU HELPED? There is not one particular day that stands out to me. Being there every day to help save someone’s life or make a difference in their life is the same, regardless of what day of the year it is. Being a nurse was never a childhood dream of mine. However, it did become one as an adult and I feel blessed to have the opportunity to do what I love.

HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE WHEN YOU HAVE TO WORK ON CHRISTMAS? The hospital is usually a good place to be for that. Usually, the nursing staff arranges to have a potluck where everyone brings in something and we all share food and make time to eat. People are usually festive and wear hats and make it more fun. One thing about working on the holidays in the hospital is that people are only there when they really need to be. Nobody comes to the hospital on Christmas unless they have to be there, and they need your help. You feel very needed and appreciated. So, although no one likes to be away from their family at Christmas, it’s actually not a terrible holiday to work because you feel like you’re helping people and that’s why we’re all there anyway.

SINCE BABIES AREN’T ALWAYS BORN ON SCHEDULE, DO YOU SOMETIMES HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION TO RUSH TO THE HOSPITAL? WHAT MAKES IT WORTHWHILE? Sometimes in the middle of Christmas morning and opening presents, or during dinner, I have to go. It goes back to what I was saying that people really need you. There is something special about delivering a baby on Christmas, honestly.

HOW DO YOU MAKE IT UP TO YOUR FAMILY WHEN YOU CAN’T BE THERE ON CHRISTMAS? My husband (Bruce) knows, and my children (Jack and Caitlyn) have both grown up knowing that sometimes mom has to go, and it just is the way that it is. What we usually do though is try to celebrate before or after if we need to. That definitely has gotten easier as the children have gotten older, so it’s easier to shift the date without a problem.

INSTRUCTIONS Bring water, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt to a boil in a 2-quart saucepan over moderately high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, whisking occasionally, for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in rum. Serve hot. Prep Time: 15 mins. Serves: 4

AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS EGGNOG INGREDIENTS 4 cups whole milk 5 whole cloves 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 12 egg yolks 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 1/2 cups light rum, or to personal taste 4 cups whipping cream 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon fresh ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan, and heat over lowest setting for 5 minutes. Slowly bring milk mixture to a boil, stirring constantly. In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar. Whisk until fluffy. Whisk hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs. Pour mixture into saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick. Do not allow mixture to boil. Strain and let cool for about an hour. Stir in rum, cream, 2 teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg. Refrigerate overnight. Prep Time: 1 hour 20 minutes, then overnight Serves: 12

When God orchestrates a sequence of events, you may find yourself in Ghana where poverty and a growing economy coexist. ARTICLE AND PHOTOG R APHY BY PAM RE ID

There are no direct flights from Atlanta to Ghana, but there is most definitely a direct tug at the heart. Twelve hours on a plane to the unknown, I was filled with both excitement and anticipation of what was in store for me in the Motherland. The trip was a well-orchestrated blend of culture, fun and service. I was as prepared as any international traveler would be, yet no one could have prepared me for the depth of need that exists in many of the rural villages, which seemed to be akin to a richness in history and resiliency. I found it hard to strike a balance between what I could see as daily living and the rising inflation, with the history I was experiencing through the guides who took me down a visual path into the past. Ghana is currently in a full-blown recession, and the Cedi is currently the worst-performing currency globally. On the flip side, manufacturing is one of the main drivers of growth, along with cocoa production. Ghana is the world's second-largest producer of the chocolate-making ingredient, after Ivory Coast - a country on the southern coast of West Africa. Despite what is unfolding around them, the Ghanaians are gentle, welcoming and kind. They emphasize communal values such as family, respect for the elderly, honoring traditional rulers, and the importance of dignity and proper social conduct. My two-week journey experience was overwhelming, transformational, and absolutely amazing all at the same time. I am the founder of a brand ministry called F.L.O.W, an acronym that stands for Feel Love Over Worry. In partnership with Infinity Global Connections, I had the honor of addressing more than 100 women at an event titled "Insights & Inspiration" to teach lessons on stewardship and life. There was much to do in preparation for our day of service at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana - Prince of Peace Congregation in Avenor, Accra. I was fortunate to have the pastor's sister pick me up and drive me to purchase the items of food for the local villagers. The plan was to purchase food items for 100 families - a five-pound bag of rice, a can of mackerel, and a bottle of oil. The plan expanded as our U.S. dollar stretched further in Ghana than expected. We increased the bag of rice to ten pounds, added 5 more families for a total of 105,

and added tomato paste to each bag. We were also able to make a donation to the church. This blessing - food we were told would feed a family of five for about two weeks - would not have been possible without the support of friends and family here in the United States. There's more . . . we had enough to purchase a lawnmower for one of the primary schools. There is no bathroom at school in many of the local villages, so the children do their business outside. The boys don't have a problem with the tall grass since they stand, but the tall grass proves to be a problem for girls to squat, as snakes hide in the grass. While we could see what an incredible blessing the food and the lawnmower were, we could also feel love over worrying about food, for at least a couple of weeks, and the dangers of what may lurk in the tall grass. There was no shortage of gratitude as together we prayed a blessing over every family that contributed to this effort.

I was humbled by the honor and opportunity to worship with the women at church. Through dance and praise, they express their love for God, and I could tell they feel His presence deep in their spirit. The media showed up on the day of service. I was told they seek out positive news and stories in an attempt to overshadow the negative and heart-wrenching stories of poverty and destitute families. The video clip of that day makes me chuckle. Aside from being referred to as Reverend Pam Reid, I look like I might melt from the heat while everyone around me looks cool and dry. FLOW is a reminder that there isn't anything so small in our lives that God would not want to be a part of. We can also be reminded that anything we choose to do to help "the least of these", no matter how small we may think, represents the goodness and love of God. I was encouraged to see that in Ghana, they teach the love of God to the students in school and the importance of our obedience to Him.

Most people can’t begin to understand the challenges parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities face on a day-to-day basis, nor would they experience the depth of fear that comes with worrying about what will happen to their child once they are no longer around to take care of them. Such is the case for mother, advocate, and founder of Two Sparrows Village, Jennifer Conforti. “Hundreds of thousands of families, in this country alone, feel the weight of this and more on a daily basis.” Jennifer prayed without ceasing for God’s guidance. “Lord, I feel like an airplane circling Hartsfield Jackson. Will you please light up my runway? I don’t know where to land. I don’t know where to go. Tell me what to do.” In January 2018, the seed was planted, and Jennifer was well prepared with perseverance and the relational equity to nurture and bring to fruition a Common area entrance hallway with original artwork by Courtney Eidson

newly built community for adults with disabilities - Two Sparrows Village. “You can create what you imagine when people with the right skills, experiences, and heart come together with a shared vision.” Nestled right in the middle of Christian City’s 500acre campus is the place where adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities call home and experience the supportive, life-enhancing benefits of community. The first Two Sparrows Village cottage is made possible through a partnership with Christian City, a not-for-profit organization that provides vibrant living, life-changing hope, and a community of loving friends. Jennifer is overwhelmed with gratitude when she reflects on the support for her vision. “Christian City is truly a dream come true for community living.” She continues, “Not one person in any municipality here told me ‘no'. It was encouraging for me to be in

a community where people really did want to help.” November 1, 2022, was the five-year anniversary of Two Sparrows Village. Currently, there are four high-functioning residents living independently in the Two Sparrows Village cottage, and leadership is well aware of how great the need is. According to the organization’s Executive Director, Jacque Thornton, “We’ve got to get more inventory. There are 38 on the waiting list. We have a goal to expand to have at least 16 units on the Christian City campus by 2024.” In addition, the organization is working towards making housing available not only to those who are high functioning on the autism and IDD spectrums, but to also begin to develop where they have personal care and even full care levels. A continuum of care best describes the Two Sparrows Village model at Christian City. Residents can go from

one stage of care to another, in a life plan continuum. Jacque explains, “Live here lifelong — reach age 55 and income eligible, or as they age and their health requires a different level of care, a resident can apply to move into other areas of the campus and never have to leave their community.” The long-term vision for the organization is to have a Two Sparrows Village, in partnership with retirement communities that have every level of care, within 200 miles of every major city in the United States. Both Jennifer and Jacque are like-minded and like-hearted in their belief that, “We can have the things we set our minds and hearts to.” It takes audacious faith to step out and proclaim a goal of this size. Jennifer shares openly, “My faith was extremely tested for so long, but it never left me and God never let go of me, and thankfully I never let go of Him.” While Jacque Thornton is part of the magic that happens at Two Sparrows Village, she is joined by two other amazing professionals. Lora Daniels, the program director, and Dwon Johnson who serves as the resident concierge. Jennifer regards this talented team as outstanding in their respective areas of expertise, as well as trustworthy and loving. Jennifer’s daughter Abby was diagnosed with a congenital brain defect at the age of two and then a year later severe autism. Jennifer feels encouraged. “I can see Abby living independently, with round-the-clock care, in a home-health kind of situation, but in the right space, with the right people, and really capable staff who know how to work with kids like Abby. That gives me great hope and immeasurable peace of mind.” The goal at Two Sparrows Village is for residents to grow beyond what they’ve done in their home environment with their parents, and learn how to improve and live independently. There is a myriad of ways to get involved with Two Sparrows Village. The emphasis is on donations and the need for people to come alongside them to help with the building process. Their list of activities and community engagement opportunities can be found on their website at twosparrowsvillage.org. Jacque’s son is on the autism spectrum and the ADD spectrum. “I just want people to make space for someone who’s different. I don’t care what that difference is. Make space and time and watch your life change.” “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them falls to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” - Matthew 10:29-31 Jennifer wants every resident to know that they are worth more than many sparrows.

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. Cody’s Christm as Trees A PEACHTREE CITY BOY WITH A MISSION FINDS A WAY TO HELP SHELTER ANIMALS. When nine-year-old Cody York went with his family to adopt a cat from a local animal shelter around Christmas last year, he left with more than a cat. He left with tears in his eyes and a mission. “We saw that the animals didn’t have beds or anything to sleep on—just cold, hard floor,” Cody said. He wanted to buy animal beds. When his mom, Megan, explained the cost, Cody thought of a way to raise money. Looking at the family Christmas tree, he suggested, “We should make some wooden ones.” Thanks to their dad, Chris, a general contractor, Cody and his brother Collin already knew how to use tools, and Megan put the call out on Facebook for donated wooden pallets. The response was overwhelming. “So many people we didn’t even know dropped off pallets at our home,” Megan said, adding that even a Newnan pallet company donated.

Cody’s Christmas Trees was born and quickly became a family affair with Cody’s other siblings, Mackenzie, Makaylee, Bentley and Brynlee helping as well. “Everybody chips in with everything,” Cody said. Last year, Cody’s Christmas Trees donated about 200 beds to local shelters including the Fayette County Animal Shelter and Royal Animal Refuge, which also received a personalized tree. Shelter workers were touched. “They were all crying and hugging Cody,” Megan said. Of course, Cody’s favorite part is giving the beds to the animals. “It’s just a very good feeling,” he said.
