with that little collar and plaid tie, and those blue eyes! That is one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen and I thank his owner for allowing me to use his photo. I can't imagine a better gift for a child for Christmas than a puppy under the tree. I got my first dog when I was 8 years old but she wasn't wrapped up in a box with holes cut in it as you see in the movies. She was the runt of the litter of beautiful Collie/German Shepherd Dog mixes and when I saw her all by herself in the corner

of the puppy box, my heart went out to her. I had to let her know she was just as loved as her bigger, prettier brothers and sisters - so she came home with me. We got her on the 4th of July weekend in 1976, our country's bicentennial, so we decided to name her Betsy Ross. Betsy grew into a beautiful, smart, loving companion. She was one of the best dogs I'd ever had the pleasure of owning. Honestly, we don't deserve dogs. They are too good for humans. So what's under your tree this year? The team begins planning and preparing for the event up to a year in advance. The actual setup can take about six to eight weeks. Onlookers can view the light show on foot. Throughout your journey, hunger won’t be an issue as there are multiple food and snack locations within

KRISTINA ALDRICH MAKES HOMES BEAUTIFUL AND FUNCTIONAL AT CHRISTMAS AND YEAR ROUND

VIRGINIA,

KRISTINA

ALDRICH HAS FOLLOWED WHAT SHE CALLS A “LONG PATH OF CRAZINESS,” TO BRING BEAUTIFUL HOME DÉCOR TO FAYETTE AND COWETA COUNTIES. Kristina and her husband Chris are co-owners of Aldrich Home, which offers a well-curated collection of products to make the home beautiful, comfortable and functional at Christmas and yearround. Inventory includes everything from candles and greenery to unique furniture pieces and lighting as well as a smidge of boutique clothing and jewelry. The couple's venture into décor started about six years ago after they bought a fixer-upper in their native state of West Virginia. Kristina, a former banker, had recently left the corporate world to become a stay-at-home mom to sons, Blake and Mason. She dove into adding her personal touches to their home. “It just kind of snowballed out of control,” she said. “I love decorating.” Chris, who owned a sawmill and had a newfound interest in building furniture, added personal touches as well. The first piece he built was a console.

ARE YOU AT AN INCREASED RISK FOR A HEART ATTACK THIS HOLIDAY SEASON? Yes. Studies show increases in alcohol and salt intake, high levels of stress, and postponing medical treatment contribute to a higher risk for a hear t attack during the holidays. BUT plaque buildup in the ar teries often happens over time and half of hear t attacks occur in people with normal cholesterol levels.

Know Your Cardiovascular Disease Risk and Have Peace of Mind

Ever y year, my MDVIP patients receive advanced blood tests, along with additional screenings and testing, that go beyond what is typically included in an insurance physical exam. These blood tests provide an in- depth picture of their inflammation levels, plaque buildup, and risk for a cardiovascular event like a hear t attack and include these tests: • Lipid Profile: looks at your Apolipoprotein B-100 (a vascular disease marker), LDL (bad cholesterol), and HDL (good cholesterol) par ticle numbers and sizes • C-Reactive Protein: calculates the protein associated with general inflammation • Myeloperoxidase: measures myeloperoxidase level (vascular inflammation biomarker) Research has found that 40% more patients at risk for hear t attack or stroke were identified by MDVIP-affiliated doctors using this advanced testing. Call my office today to learn how you can receive this testing and a personalized wellness plan that champions you, your health, and your goals, so you can have peace of mind not just during the holidays, but all year long! 28

broth, butter, herbs and spices, it's not surprising that people use the terms interchangeably. In the most technical terms, stuffing is stuffed (literally) inside the cavity of the turkey and cooked there. While turkey juices do make the dish more delicious, it is imperative that everything inside the bird is cooked to at least 165 degrees. Dressing, on the other hand, is almost always cooked outside the bird in a separate casserole dish. Of course, there's the family that prefers to put dressing inside the bird, and another family that loves to have their stuffing on the side.

So, what's the truth? It may simply boil down to where you were born and raised. With some exceptions, in the South, the savory side is typically referred to as dressing. Cornbread is used because traditionally it was a staple in southern homes. In the northern and northeastern states and the west coast, it's almost always referred to as stuffing, with white bread being the starch of choice. There is, however, a notable difference in

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. “I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my

family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have

Anna Sarol

otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent. When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.” In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy
