Hawaiian Run Thingy Brings the Arts and Diversity to the 5K

Families broke out their Hawaiian shirts and grass skirts for the second annual Hawaiian Run Thingy this spring. Beyond the run-walk-roll, there were hula dance lessons, limbo, trike races, Hawaiian shirt contests, bouncy house, live tropical birds, steel drums, Sandbox Discovery, acting workshops and more for the whole family. Fayette Chamber's Spring Golf Tournament is a Success The Fayette Chamber's Annual Business on the Green Classic took place this spring. With 200 golfers, 100 volunteers, and 60 sponsors, the event was more than a success! ounty operated Animal Control facilities often instill fear into the hearts of animal lovers and carry a negative stigma. The notion that bloodthirsty monsters fill such facilities, waiting to euthanize innocent animals, often prevails in the minds of our citizens. However, one visit to Fayette County Animal Shelter will lay these reservations to rest. This establishment is filled with dedicated, caring staff and committed volunteers. In reality, high euthanasia rates directly result from irresponsible pet owners within the community. Adoption Coordinator Karol Padgett gives the following advice to the residents of Fayette County: “It’s extremely important for all citizens to spay and neuter their pets to reduce overpopulation. Also, avoid

allowing them to run at large, and keep a collar with tags on your pet at all times.” Banjo, the Australian Cattle Dog/American Pit Bull Terrier mix, is the staff favorite at Fayette County Animal Shelter. This sweet boy waits patiently day after day for a family to call his own. However, with little interest in this young, energetic dog, he must continue lingering in his kennel. He comes from an unknown background, but quickly wins over the heart of anyone taking the time to spend with him. When you speak to him, his ears raise and lower expressively. He will happily bring you his favorite toy, time and again, or remain perfectly content lying across your lap. At only a year old, he longs for children to play with and a fenced in backyard (or even a jogging companion.) Not everyone is ready to adopt a new family member, but there are many ways to assist Fayette County Animal Shelter with their efforts! They need volunteers daily to assist with cleaning kennels, exercising animals, and providing socialization. The staff also greatly appreciates donations of wet/dry cat and dog food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, blankets, treats, and toys. Monetary donations for veterinary care are accepted at the Animal Medical Clinic of Peachtree City. Please consider taking time out of your schedule to go meet Banjo and all his friends at the shelter. You may leave with your new best friend!

Dr. Joseph Barrow began as Superintendent of Schools in 2013. Here he discusses style, family lessons, and what he lives by. FCL: How has your father's influence shaped your life? JB: My father instilled in me a strong work ethic very early. Neither of

my parents graduated from high school, but both valued education. My father taught me that any challenge you can overcome by showing up, being consistent, and working hard. FCL: What advice has stuck with you through the years? JB: Try to treat people like you would want to be treated. From the

governor to a state senator, to the man on the side of the road in jeans, I try to treat people with respect regardless of any issue. FCL: What motto do you live by? JB: Much like my value promise, I am a champion for children. Pro-

fessionally, I answer to the Board of Education, but I truly believe that education is the pathway to achieving the American Dream. And I want that for every single child, regardless of their background. FCL: When we say style in Fayette County, what comes to mind? JB: Diverse sophistication. There is a lot of diversity in this commu-

nity, and that is something we can look at not as a weakness, but as a strength.

When we ask chef Joe Hanna about his favorite places to do business, he says with a laugh, “Of course, Pinewood Studios!” Co-owner of Studio Cafe, located in Pinewood Atlanta’s film and television studios, he and his brother make it a point to serve with excellence. With 27 years of motion picture catering experience, Hanna shares some of his influences and advice from over the years. FCL: What do you love most about your career? JH: Definitely the camaraderie. We are very passionate about what

we do. When you are working with a crew sometimes 18 hours a day, seeing each other 20 to 40 weeks, you come to depend on each other. But you are also being successful together, and that’s the best feeling in the world. FCL: How has your father's influence shaped your life? JH: My father taught me that lots of people will be way more talented

than you, but never let any of them outwork you. If you want it, you can do anything as long as you do what it takes. FCL: What advice has stuck with you through the years? JH: Stay humble. You are better than nobody, and remember that ev-

erything you’ve got, you’ve got from the Lord. FCL: If I say style in Fayette County, what comes to mind? JH: Wonderful galas at Pinewood Studios, amazing fundraisers; it’s

Kyle Hood’s sense of humor is always apparent in a crowd, but his story is not one that most people know. Serving as town manager for the last four years, Hood has become a recognized leader in Fayette County, especially within the business community. FCL: How has your father's influence shaped your life? JB: My father traveled quite a bit, so it was quality over quantity. Our

time together was always more about depth than length. Neither of my parents had a college education. They were blue collar workers, who instilled in me a work ethic and an attitude to live the American dream, to do what people swam across oceans for. FCL: What was one of your proudest moments? KH: The day my mom and grandma saw me on the cover of an At-

lanta magazine. It was tangible evidence of what they’ve worked and sacrificed for. FCL: What excites you most about your career now? KH: Being able to actually see changes being made. There is often

a disconnect between American people and their government, and you see this from the presidential campaign on down. It’s nice to have someone at the local level you can call, e-mail or stop by and visit, who can actually address the things you are concerned about. We are agents of that change, and that means a lot to me. FCL: I hear you have pets? JB: Yes! I have one dog named Pepper. She’s a pound puppy. It’s one

of those situations where it’s not clear who rescued whom. She’s a mixed breed, super smart, and the quintessential man’s best friend. FCL: When we say style in Fayette County, what comes to mind?

To me, there is no defined style, because there are a so many different styles, especially in this community. 24

For eight years, BaSean A. Jackson has led the Fellowship of Love Church. A graduate of Morehouse College and Emory University and a father of one, Jackson talks to us about what fatherhood has meant to him, and his role in the Fayette community. FCL: How has your father's influence shaped your life? BJ: A few things. One, my father was very convicted. Seeing someone who

lived this life influences me now in that, when I feel strongly about something, I know that it means paying the price. My father was also very studious: he loved to read. Each night he’d go to sleep with a book and wake up with one, and I do that too. And then, my father taught me that a dad did everything. From doing my sister’s hair, to cooking. When my son is older, there is not anything that I want my son to say that I didn’t do. FCL: What advice has stuck with you through the years? BJ: Do everything. Don’t be too macho to not do everything your child

needs you to do. Waking up in the middle of the night for that infant, feeding him, caring for him. These become connecting points down the road. They make a huge difference. FCL: What is one of your proudest moments? BJ: It’s a number of moments. When I see someone in the community

met photographer, Ron Hill, about a year ago while speaking to a group of young women on style at a studio in downtown Atlanta.

Our encounter was brief that day, but we exchanged contacts and decided to meet on a later date to discuss a few of his upcoming projects. One evening at Octane, Ron’s favorite coffee shop in the Westside District, he introduced what is now The LumberGent. After only a year, Ron is gaining traction, not only for his photography, but his personal style and aesthetic. On his Instagram page, @RonHill the images seen are reflective of an urban gent. His visuals tell a story of the photographer’s lifestyle and the elements he surrounds himself by to be creative. His love for denim, leather, and warm color pallet often appear in his work. While styling a shoot for Ron a few weeks ago there were moments where I realized how intentional he is in capturing the smallest details, from the cuff of a pair of trousers to the slant of a fedora. When asked how he wanted people to receive his work he shared, “Along with my photography, I want people to recognize Ron as a lifestyle brand. Everything I do, the way I dress, the way I shoot – it all represents The LumberGent.” A few days before our interview, I received a text from Ron of an illustrated portrait of himself. I replied, “Cool, who did this?” He told me it was the work of a follower on Instagram. I called him immediately and when he answered I said, “ You know you’ve made it when you get illustrated on the gram,” we both laughed.

JAGUAR’S REDESIGNED XF KEEPS ITS SPORTS-CAR SOUL ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY TOM STRONGMAN

he Jaguar XF has been redesigned for 2016 with a new aluminum-intensive architecture, revised exterior and the choice of two supercharged V-6 engines. Jaguar has often used aluminum to reduce weight, and the allwheel-drive XF is 265 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. The rear-wheel-drive version is 132 pounds lighter. Lighter weight means better fuel economy and the new car is rated at 20 miles per gallon in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. In addition to the new aluminum-intensive architecture, other changes include a more vertical front end, shorter front overhang, a 2-inch longer wheelbase and new rear quarter windows. 36

The XF still has the soul of a sports car lurking inside its svelte sedan body. Nearly ideal weight distribution enables the car to tackle turns with confidence and security. Jaguar’s press materials indicate that “aerodynamics are improved by using vents in the front bumper to channel air over the front wheels. This helps to prevent the turbulent wheel wake from disturbing the smooth laminar airflow passing around the car.” There are four trim levels, each available with rear-wheel or allwheel drive. Prices start at $51,900 for the 340-horsepower Premium and top out at $65,700 for the 380-horsepower all-wheel-drive S. The car I drove from Jaguar’s press fleet was a rear-wheel-drive S with the 380-horsepower, supercharged V-6 and an eight-speed automatic transmission. For added security in all the warmest of climates, I would opt for the allwheel-drive version as long as the additional $3,000 is not a wallet buster. Performance and handling are balanced with comfort and enough room for four people to ride comfortably. Thanks to supercharging, the power band is wide enough so that you

Jaguar says it shifts “in just 200 milliseconds, or four times faster than the average human resting heartbeat.” Shift paddles on the steering wheel enable the driver to take control at any time.

The test car’s cabin was pleasant and serene. The instrument panel now has a curved design that is similar to that of the XJ, and it extends into the door panels. Vents in the instrument panel open when the car is started and close when it is turned off. The main instrument cluster is a thin-film-transistor LCD panel that looks like an analog speedometer but its appearance and function can be changed. The audio and navigation systems are controlled through a 10.2-inch touch screen or by knobs on the lower part of the instrument panel. Jaguar’s menu system always seems a bit complex so having redundant switches for the climate control is helpful. Wind and road noise are nicely muted and the seats are widely adjustable. The leather seats have excellent lateral and lumbar support. Keyless entry, heated front seats, split-folding rear seats and a Meridian audio system were part of the test car’s standard equipment. Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, Sirius satellite radio, blind-spot monitor and a rearview camera were also included. The test car’s base price was $62,700. Options included black metallic paint, black trim, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, electric rear sunshade, four-zone climate control, suede cloth headliner, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, park assist, head-up display and black 20-inch wheels. The sticker price was $75,145.

Reflections on Fatherhood PASTOR AT THE UPPER ROOM CHURCH SPEAKS MALE ROLES ARTICLE DR. FRANKLIN BATTLE, JR.

s a boy, I was not raised by my father. I was raised by my grandmother and many women of the

family. I had several uncles that were around, but they didn’t take the role of a father figure in my life; instead, I observed their many negative behaviors. When it came time for me to become a man, a husband, and a father, with a desire to have a strong successful family, I realized that I didn’t have that role model. How was I going to handle all of the challenges of being a husband and being a father? There was no male there to teach me these necessary skills. I remembered instead what not to do from the men I was exposed to growing up, because of all the difficulties they had. I had to learn these roles through experience, trial and error. I had to learn the duties of a man and adjust my responsibilities to fit my role as head of the household. My transition to manhood was not an easy one, but it has been successful through God’s guidance and the lessons that I learned through experience. Because of this, I am now able to effectively minister and train the men of my ministry to equip them to successfully lead their household. Here are a few lessons that come to mind that have helped me prosper: • Rely on the talents of each individual in the household to make a family strong. My responsibility was not to cook meals for my family, but rather to work outside the home to provide for my family. • Discipline was invaluable to teach and train my children. It may be difficult, but everyone reaps the benefits in the long-term. • Stay involved in your children’s lives, no matter what, because the presence and love of a father is like no other. It is so vitally important to break the generational cycles and reclaim fatherhood for the well-being of future generations. Dr. Franklin D.
