WALKING FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the largest event worldwide to raise funds and awareness for the disease. The walk is held in more than 600 communities in the United States, including Peachtree City. This year’s event was held at Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater and managed to educate, motivate and inspire for a much-needed cause. “There are 130,000 Georgians living with Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to grow in Georgia by 46 percent in the next 10 years,” says Ava Cologne, manager of constituent events in Metro Atlanta office. “Not only are we raising awareness for Alzheimer’s disease but are raising critical dollars to fund programs for families who are suffering and fund research to one day find a cure”. Taylor took home his second gold medal in the triple jump competition during this yearâ€™s Olympics in Rio. He currently holds the Georgia state high school records in long jump, triple jump, and the 400m. He graduated from the University of Florida with eight SEC championships under his belt. Victory, and Sandy Creek High School. Growing up, Taylor was involved in what he calls the “typical childhood” activities. He played soccer, played trombone in the band, and was a member of the 4H and Beta club. Taylor chose to visit the schools he attended as a kid so that the students could relate to him. He hopes that they can be inspired by someone who walked down the same hallways and had the same teachers that they do now. The 26-year-old Olympic Champion’s success did not come easily, a message he wants to make clear to the children he mentors. “We all have to make sacrifices no matter what they are. I think a lot of people think these things happen overnight and they don’t,” Taylor says. Taylor set his sights on the Olympics early. He encourages the students he speaks with to set goals and to strive to achieve them. “As soon as I got in track and field, I said ‘I want to go to the Olympics because that is the biggest stage.’ Whatever you want to do, no matter what field that is, don’t strive to just be there. Strive to run it. Strive to own it,” says Taylor. Undoubtedly, Taylor is an expert in perseverance. In 2012, he was forced to switch his jumping leg due to an injury. Ten years of muscle memory had to be changed so that Taylor could continue to compete. Faced with criticism and doubt, he was able to come out stronger than before and prove his critics otherwise. “I was 22 years old, and I knew my story wasn’t supposed to end there. I can be a living testimony to my faith and the fact that you never know what God has planned for you. Four years later, I am back at the top and jumping farther than I ever have,” he says.

At speaking engagements, Taylor emphasizes that anything is possible. “This is why I can tell you not to have barriers and show you how God can really work,” he says. Although Taylor spends most of his time traveling, training and competing as a professional athlete, he still felt like he could be doing more. After speaking with his agent, he learned of the organization called Classroom Champions. Classroom Champions gives professional athletes a chance to give back through online motivational lectures that schools can stream into their classrooms. Taylor also coaches middle school and high school track and field in Gainesville, Florida. Taylor hopes to continue to find ways to give back. “I get to work with seven different schools every year. Classroom Champions is just the start of something I would like to do on a bigger scale. Inspiring the next generation is something I am passionate about,” he says. Taylor’s first coaches and biggest cheerleaders are his parents. Ian and Stephanie Taylor said that they chose to raise their son in Fayetteville because of the school and faith systems in the area. What is it Ian Taylor admires most about his son? “His humbleness. His ability to decipher the big stage,” he says. Taylor certainly has remained humble and wants people to know that he is a regular person no different from them. The reigning champion in his true fashion has already set his goals for the future. He would one day like to work in the hotel industry, but first, he is aiming to compete in the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo.

HOMEMADE HOPS-INFUSED DOG SHAMPOO Perfect for a fresh, deep clean scented with hops. • 1 pint gentle natural dish washing soap • 1 pint hop water • 1 pint apple cider vinegar • 3/4 cups hops • 4 oz. glycerin • 1 tablespoon baking soda 1. Infuse water and hops in a jar for at least an hour. 2. Mix all of the ingredients together and put in a bottle. 3. Grab your pup and suds up. Rinse thoroughly. Voilà!

f Boni Blackstone starts talking about the virtues of local radio, grab yourself a cup of coffee or some iced tea because it’ll take a while. Blackstone is among a group of investors, including her husband, Joe Pedicino, who are bringing country station 92.5 FM The Bear to Fayetteville. She is passionate about the role that the station will play in promoting local businesses, civic events and even preparing people for a career in broadcasting. “With a lot of the big radio stations it’s just one person in a studio talking and people listening to stations all over the country don’t know they’re getting the same broadcast from the same person,” she says. “We have a radio station that reflects this area. We’re building a radio station for a community. We have live personalities on the air from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. telling you to come to the blood drive, or the church bake sale or the PetSmart opening. We are a community radio station and we report on the community.” Need a refill? Blackstone is just warming up! “Our disc jockeys live in the area. They know the places to shop, eat, the people in the schools. We want to hear from people. That’s why we have a request line that goes straight to the studio. We want our people talking to our listeners,” she says. “We not only want to hear what songs they want us to play, we want to hear if there’s a bad wreck on I-75. We’ll call the sheriff’s office and then go on the air and tell people how to get around the traffic.” Blackstone, who grew up in Riverdale, says bringing the station to Fayetteville is “like a homecoming. I got my first job here. I got married here. And, now I get to bring my radio station that I love here. Fayette County has rolled out the red carpet for us. They’re as excited as we are about the move back.” The history of The Bear goes back for nearly 20 years. Blackstone, her husband, and financial partners owned Legacy Media and ran four AM and FM stations in Newnan and in 2007 purchased WEKS 92.5 FM The Bear, a 6,000watt station, operating in Griffin. After purchase, the FCC upgraded its signal from a weak 6,000 watts to a regional powerhouse of 25,000 watts that could be heard in 19 counties. “Everything just came together, the financing, the CONTINUED >

A recent article quoted the city guaranteeing the station $40,000 for radio advertising over the next four years to relocate.

The Bear will open up a new studio on the green and passerby will be able to look through the large windows and see the broadcasts. “We’re real excited about the move but the station will stay the same. Same music, same personalities. Same devotion to the local community,” she says. The station is heavy on local news and events. Hometown Radio is a program where local leaders and businesspeople can go on and have informative discussions with the disc jockeys in-between songs. Employees participate in parades, cancer walks, and other community events. The station is also 24

big on live remotes where they’ll broadcast live and “literally bring a party. We’ll give away prizes, pass out ice cream.” Of course, often the star of these remotes is Bubba the Bear, the station’s mascot who was designed by the same firm that brought us the San Diego Chicken. Since the sale, Legacy has since partnered with Murray Communications and its list of stations in Macon and the surrounding area that will allow all the stations to attract national advertising dollars without changing formats. “It’s all coming together and we’re all maintaining our individuality but now we’re reaching and sounding like the Atlanta stations, and hopefully getting the adverting clients.” A mascot was important to Blackstone. After her wrestling career, she ran the couple’s production company, Blackstone Adracadabra, doing promotions, designing websites, shooting videos for auto dealers, and other marketing necessities. But, we did say her wrestling career, didn’t we? So, pour another cup. Blackstone, a former Miss Motorcraft 500, is perhaps best known as the co-host of Superstars of Wrestling with then future husband Pedicino. The two become local celebrates as well as in the wrestling world. They had an on-air comedic but adversarial relationship on the WWWF Wresting Challenge and co-hosted a weekly show. Blackstone eventually worked with Vince McMahon on shows such as WWWF Superstars, WWF All-American Wrestling, WWWF Wrestling Challenge, WWF Mania and eventually hosted Pro Wrestling Alliance. on Fox Sports Radio. Blackstone is happy about coming full circle back to Fayette County. “I was looking to come back home and I am happy to be involved with the chamber of commerce and other local civic organizations. I love being involved in scheduling our promotions and helping businesses succeed. We are down home, folksy and real. Radio is an intimate thing and I’m excited about bringing it here — back where I call home.”

Choose the best-quality fish for this simple ceviche. INGREDIENTS

SERVINGS: 4 • ¼ medium red onion, chopped, plus thin slices for serving • 2 garlic cloves, minced • ¼ habanero chile, seeded • 1 tablespoon chopped peeled ginger • ½ teaspoon sugar • 1/2 tablespoon sea salt, plus more • ⅓ cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro • 1 pound sea bass fillet, skin, bones, and bloodline removed • 1/2 cup jicama • ½ cup sour ale (we used Upslope Dry-Hopped Wild Ale) • ½ cup (or more) fresh lime juice, strained • 1 avocado, thinly sliced PREPARATION

• Chop onion, garlic, habanero, jicama, ginger, sugar, 1 tablespoon salt, lime and 1/2 cup sour beer. Transfer to a small bowl; stir in cilantro. Cover and chill 1 hour. • Meanwhile, trim fish to create clean edges. Holding your knife at a 45° angle, slice into ¼"-thick pieces; try for one fluid movement per slice to avoid shredding flesh. Transfer to the small bowl with the previous mixture, and let the fish cure in the fridge until ready to serve (at least 20 min). • Arrange fish mixture in a shallow bowl or plate. Season with salt and top with sliced avocado. Serve immediately. STOUT CHOCOLATE BROWNIES Stout Chocolate Brownies INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup stout • 1/4 cup espesso or strong cold brew • 10 ounces 60% bittersweet chocolate chips • 1 cup butter • 1 cup sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla • ½ teaspoon kosher salt • 3 eggs • 1 cup flour INSTRUCTIONS

• Preheat oven at 250 degrees F. Prepare a 9" X 9" baking pan with parchment paper allowing the paper to hang over the edges and spray with cooking spray. • Bring stout to a boil and reduce to simmer and cook for about 10 minutes or until reduced to ¼ cup. Set aside to cool. • In a double boiler or a small bowl atop a small saucepan filled with 1 inch of water, melt chocolate chips and butter over high heat, stirring occasionally, until melted. • Pour melted chocolate into a medium bowl and cool slightly. Add sugar, vanilla, salt and stout and mix well with a whisk or wooden spoon. Add eggs one at a time, mixing just until combined before adding the next egg. • Fold flour into mixture and pour into baking pan. Bake for one hour or until a toothpick comes out clean. How long has Fayette County been home? I’ve been living in Fayette County for two years now. I love the idea of living and working in the same place. Why is this home for life and business? I like the feel of community you get in Fayette County. It’s a very family-oriented community. What are some of your favorite activities here in Fayetteville? I would say we love to go to the park, hang out, and play with the kids on the swings. It’s kind of simple, but it’s one of our favorite things to do. We also like going out to eat as a family.

What are some of your interests? I’m a member of a Corvette Club here locally (Outkast Vettes). I’m a Corvette fanatic, always have been…. I just remember one of my dad’s friends had one. And the first time I saw the lights pop up, I thought it was the coolest car in the world. I’ve been hooked on them since then. We love to load up and go on road trips. We really like going to the beach. Panama City Beach is one of our favorite places to go. Rehabbing houses is also a hobby of his. I’ve got a couple of rental homes. Just to be able to go into a house, and have a vision for it, rehab it and make it into someone’s home – that’s something that’s really cool to me. What is your life philosophy? I would say family first. It’s kind of simplistic, but I guess once I became a family man, that took precedence over everything. Every decision I make ties into my family. What are you proudest of? I’m proudest of my family. I’m proud of the fact that I’ve got a wonderful wife, two beautiful children, and I’m able to at least raise them in a way where they can see an alternative to having to work for someone. Entrepreneurship was instilled in me at an early age. If they want to make that choice, they have an opportunity to follow in my footsteps, or do something else.
