Investment. By definition, it’s the act of dedicating time, energy, or resources toward something with the hope of a worthwhile return. But here in Fairfield, investment feels like something deeper. It’s not just about financial growth — it’s about strengthening the community we’re proud to call home.

In a town like Fairfield, investment happens every day in quiet, meaningful ways. It’s choosing to shop and dine locally on Main Street. It’s support ing our schools, our arts organizations, and the many nonprofits that make this town so special. It’s volunteering, mentoring, attending town events, and showing up for one another. These are the investments that preserve the character of Fairfield while shaping its future.

Fairfield has always been a town that values both tradition and progress. We honor our history while thoughtfully planning for what comes next. That balance requires intention. It requires residents who care enough to participate, business owners willing to take thoughtful risks, and families who choose to plant roots and stay engaged. Every time we contribute — whether through time, talent, or resources — we help ensure that Fairfield remains vibrant, welcoming, and strong.

Investment is also about stewardship. Many of us are fortunate to call this beautiful town home, surrounded by scenic landscapes, historic charm, and a thriving cultural scene. Preserving that quality of life doesn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of collective investment — in responsible planning, in supporting local initiatives, and in nurturing the relationships that tie neighbors together. What we invest in today determines what the next generation will inherit tomorrow.

Of course, financial investments help us plan wisely and build long-term security. But some of the most meaningful returns come from personal investments — spending time with family, deepening friendships, getting involved, and being present in the moments that matter. Those are the dividends that truly define a life well lived.

This month’s issue highlights the many ways we invest — in our finances, in our businesses, and in our community. Whether it’s planning for the future, supporting local entrepreneurs, or prioritizing the relationships that enrich our lives, each investment reflects what we value most.

Every investment is ultimately an expression of hope — hope in our families, in our future, and in Fairfield itself. As you turn these pages, I hope you feel inspired to invest thoughtfully in the people, places, and passions that make this town such an extraordinary place to live.

Here’s to a month of growth, connection, and meaningful returns.

Happy April,

April 2026

WHAT YOU Need TO KNOW

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025

As a CPA I’m frequently fielding questions about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), enacted on July 4, 2025. Key provisions like the enhanced State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, Trump accounts, senior deduction, and no-tax-on-tips/overtime rules are top of mind. These changes offer some significant tax relief and more importantly, some permanency in the tax code.  Below are a few of the more significant highlights.

The SALT deduction—allowing itemized deductions for state and local taxes (property, income, or sales taxes)—saw one of the biggest updates under OBBBA. The prior $10,000 cap (from the 2017 TCJA) has been raised to $40,000 (for joint filers) for tax years 2025 through 2029.  This is significant for those earning under 500K and live in high-tax states like Connecticut.  Basically the full $40,000 cap applies if your income is $500,000 or less for joint filers (250k for single filers).    For example, if you are a joint filer and make under 500k, you are likely to pickup another $30,000 in tax deductions on your 2025 filing!

Trump accounts are an interesting new wrinkle—tax-deferred savings for minors under 18. Parents or guardians open them with aftertax contributions up to $5,000 annually (including up to $2,500 from employers tax-free). Earnings grow tax-deferred, and qualified post-18 withdrawals roll into traditional IRAs.  In addition for kids born 2025–2028, electing an account triggers a one-time $1,000 federal deposit. If you welcomed a child in 2025, claim this soon via IRS Form 4547 or the online portal—it’s a free boost for long-term growth. These complement 529 plans but focus on general child expenses without immediate contribution deductions.

Seniors (65+ by year-end) get a temporary $6,000 additional deduction ($12,000 if both spouses qualify) for 2025–2028, on top of the standard deduction and existing senior adjustments.

This directly lowers taxable income, often preserving more Social Security from taxation and reducing brackets.  For fixed-income retirees, this is a welcome provision.

NO TAX ON TIPS AND OVERTIME: WORKER-FOCUSED RELIEF

The “no tax on tips” deduction allows a whopping $25,000 deduction in qualified tips (from IRS-listed customary-tip occupations (like servers or drivers) for 2025–2028.   This deduction phases out above $150,000 in income ($300K for joint filers).

Similarly, “no tax on overtime” deducts up to $12,500 ($25,000 joint) of the premium overtime portion (e.g., the extra in timeand-a-half), also phasing out at the same thresholds.

TAX PERMANENCY

One of the most consequential aspects of the law is the permanency of individual rates.  The OBBB permanently locks in the current individual income tax rate structure, eliminating the looming uncertainty that taxpayers and advisors have faced for years.

Previously, many tax strategies were driven by the expectation that rates would revert higher at a future date. That uncertainty pushed taxpayers toward accelerated income recognition, rushed Roth conversions, and compressed planning timelines. With rate permanency now established:

• Long-term tax planning becomes more predictable and allows for better planning

• Income-timing strategies can be evaluated on economics, not trepidation

• Multi-year modeling is much more reliable

“The OBBB was a significant piece of legislation in that it touches so many areas of the tax code.”

There is no guarantee that tax rates will never change again, in fact they likely will, — but it does remove automatic increases that were already baked into prior law; a win for taxpayers.

BUSINESS PROVISIONS

While much of the OBBB focuses on individual tax relief, the law also includes important changes for businesses. Most notably, the permanency of individual tax rates provides long-term certainty for owners of pass-through entities, allowing compensation, distribution, and succession decisions to be driven by economics rather than expiring tax rules. The bill also reinforces incentives for capital investment through faster cost recovery by accelerating tax write offs. In addition and most significantly the OBBB retains the Qualified Business Income Tax Deduction for small business owners that was first enacted in 2017.  Had this not been renewed most small business owners would have seen a significant tax increase.  Overall, the OBBB rewards businesses that plan deliberately and execute correctly.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The OBBB was a significant piece of legislation in that it touches so many areas of the tax code.  Most joint filers making under $500k are going to see significant benefits from the bill while those over $500k will see little change.  Now that the law is settled and folks are filing their income tax returns, individuals and businesses should re-evaluate their long term savings strategy, update long term business planning, and model multi year strategies.

SPARKLING LEGACY

Hughie’s Jewelry and Coins brings 80 years of Expertise

Hugh Breslin’s love for antiques started at a young age. During his childood he fondly remembers frequent day trips to Fairfield with his beloved Grandfather to hit all the tag sales, stocking up on thoughtfully selected goods for his family’s auction house. “He would ask me if I wanted

5 carat natural Ceylon sapphire with 1.50ctw of trillion cut diamonds and Antique Edwardian 1.88ct natural emerald with 1.10 ctw in diamonds set in platinum.

to go ‘sale’ing,’ -  no, not meaning sailing, but yard sale’ing. We would always end up at Rawleys after a hard day of work!” Now the owner of Hughie’s Jewelry and Coins, the self-described history buff credits both his grandfather and his father for shaping his passion. He’s a collector’s collector, having gathered enough pieces over a lifetime, along with what his father left him. Leaning into the estate side with his family’s long legacy behind him and with that same thoughtful intention, he opened his own curated shop, Hughie’s Jewelry and Coins. Hugh shares his expertise and the exquisite heirlooms you’ll find in the Southport store

FLM: WHEN WAS THE SHOP FOUNDED AND HOW DID IT GET STARTED?

Hugh Breslin: We opened exactly 2 years ago. I am Hughie the 3rd, named after my father and his father. So I named the shop after my legacy. I think my grandfather would be shocked to learn that one day his name would be used for a fine jewelry store in Southport. The name and he came all the way from Ireland by boat in the 1920’s. So it’s the biggest honor I could think of at the time to be able to honor him like that.

FLM: WHAT IS HUGHIE’S KNOWN FOR? WHAT DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?

HB: We are a full-service jewelry store. We do custom projects, repairs, and anything a client might want, really. But what we truly specialize in is buying and selling fine estate jewelry. We offer the largest selection of fine estate jewelry in the area. From Georgian to Modern, we truly have all eras covered. With my 80 years of connections, if we don’t have it, we can get it. Anything and everything is just a call away. You want a rare vintage Rolex or Patek watch, or that rare Van Cleef or Cartier piece, it’s just a phone call away. We offer entire estate liquidation. We do an old-fashioned house call and can make an offer on the entire contents. Antiques, collectibles, and even vintage cars. We’re also known for offering the best prices for gold & silver in the area when it’s time to sell.

FLM: HOW DOES HUGHIE’S JEWELRY AND COINS STAND OUT FROM OTHER DEALERS OR STORES?

HB: It’s all about honesty and integrity; something that takes a lifetime to build and 30 seconds to ruin. We have

“It’s important to me to pass down a legacy to my daughter rooted in integrity and respect.”

been here 2 years and are humbled to have made our mark in the area. It is what I have always dreamed of: to be the go-to jeweler in the area for determining the true value of your family heirlooms, jewelry, and antiques. We love and respect everyone - we cater to pretty much everyone. Billionaires to young couples just starting out. You’ll always get quality here. I love making people happy and finding that perfect gift, no matter the price point!

FLM: WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN YOU ARE ACQUIRING PIECES?

HB:  We really have a broad selection to merchandise our showcases. To make it in one of my showcases, it has to be at least

vintage and unique. I buy a lot, so it has to be something special. We take pride in curating the best selection for our customers. Anything Art Deco, Mid Century Modern, and any rare signed pieces. Van Cleef, Cartier, colored stones, Emeralds, Burma Rubies, Ceylon Sapphires, and antique Diamonds, to name a few.

FLM: HAVE YOU HANDLED ANY PARTICULARLY RARE OR HISTORIC PIECES? WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE PIECES THAT YOU’VE COME ACROSS?

HB: I really liked these 8ctw natural stone untreated natural Columbian emeralds earrings I recently sold. Anything that large

has to have GIA or AGL paperwork, or it won’t be able to demand the proper price for it. It was a whole process to get the emeralds and then submit them to GIA. My customer handed them to me without even asking for a receipt- that’s how important trust is in this business. That’s the extra step no one wants to talk about in the industry. I want to give you the most for your heirlooms.

We also recently brokered a signed letter from Lincoln to his Attorney. Anything Lincoln is blue-chip collecting. His merchandise just goes up in value every year. We were in luck, the letter wasn’t glued to the frame, which 80% are. It realized $12k at Christie’s.

FLM: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PARTS OF THE PROCESS? WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST REWARDING?

HB: The personal connections are truly rewarding. To be able to continue someone’s legacy is a cool part of my business. A piece lived its whole life and somehow found its way to me in Southport and I’m able to breathe a second chance of life into it. It’s going to be sold to someone younger and it’s got a whole new life with many more decades to be loved and cherished, while sometimes bringing life-changing returns to its seller.

I also love the fact that in my industry, I get on the elevator in any jewelry district and there are 10 people on there speaking 5 different languages. No matter what, everyone has one thing in common. Everyone, including me, is going after the American dream.

FLM: WHAT DOES BEING A FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESS MEAN TO YOU TODAY?

HB: I really appreciate the history woven into this business. In fact, I’m doing business with my dad’s friends’ kids and with some of the old-timers still around who knew my dad. It’s keeping his legacy alive in a way. It’s important to me to pass down a legacy to my daughter rooted in integrity and respect. Making the next generation of connections so that one day my daughter might work with their kids.

FTC CELEBRATES 25 YEARS!

ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM
PHOTOGRAPHY BY NEIL LANDINO

As they celebrate their 25th Anniversary, the story of Fairfield Theatre Company’s impact on Fairfield and beyond comes to life through the incredible archives, photos, and memorabilia that fill the retrospective in the Gallery, curated by long time FTC associate Iain Munley and dedicated board member Leslie Cober. “This installation celebrates the artists who stood on these stages, the children whose lives were shaped through our theater and education programs, and the transformation of what was once an underutilized building into a vibrant arts center,” says Patsy Fox, CEO and Executive Director of Fairfield Theatre Company. Walking through the installation you are transported through the history of performances and community and the memories made here. The visual time capsule resonates with the truly special nature of FTC’s legacy.

“We’re a nonprofit cultural campus serving all ages — from students to seniors — through music, theatre, film, workshops, and shared experiences.”
Senior Operations Manager, Iain Munley

From the beginning, FTC’s mission was to bring a high level of performing arts to the community, starting with its very first production of The Taming of the Shrew at the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University. In 2006, they shifted their focus to live music. Says Patsy, “To bridge the gaps between productions, the team began presenting live music and something remarkable happened. The response was overwhelming. What started as a complement to theater quickly became the anchor of our programming. The community embraced it, and a cultural institution was born.”

Over the years, FTC has evolved into a premier destination for live performance, known for the intimate atmosphere of StageOne, its 225-seat black box theater,

and the state-of-the-art 640-seat flexible venue, The Warehouse, built in 2015. Since then, they’ve produced more than 5,000 events, including performances outside their doors with outdoor concerts and beloved community traditions like Oktoberfest and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and have seen artists early in their careers visit from Trombone Shorty, The Lumineers, Goose, Twiddle, and The Revivalists to once in a lifetime moments like Buddy Guy, who once walked through a packed StageOne audience mid-song and sat down next to a patron while playing.

Just as important as being known for live music has been their impact on arts education and community partnerships throughout the area. “We’re a nonprofit

cultural campus serving all ages — from students to seniors — through music, theatre, film, workshops, and shared experiences,” says Patsy. They have partnered with Black Rock Theater to offer world-class theatrical performances. Maureen Hamill’s Summer Cabaret Workshop, now in its 19th year, has become a Fairfield tradition, with students returning year after year and eventually becoming counselors. Also at the forefront of FTC is its robust film program. Many are familiar with their annual interactive showing of cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and their Oscar Shorts programming. FTC also presents The Midday Matinee and Masterclass Series featuring stage and screen legends in intimate performance and conversation, multiple cultural

For 25 years, FTC has been the beating heart of Fairfield, bringing people together and enriching our community.

events, nonprofit fundraisers, and community celebrations. “A lot of people know us for concerts. They may not realize how much happens here every week. There truly is something for everyone here.”

Fairfield Theatre Company contributes to the vibrancy and energy of Fairfield’s downtown, drawing visitors from all over, bringing meaningful economic impact to our restaurants, shops and local businesses. “A night at FTC; dinner at a local restaurant, a show, a stroll through town—creates the kind of experience people associate with major cultural cities like New York, Nashville, or Austin. The difference is: it’s right here in our backyard.” Patsy perfectly articulates.

What many people may be surprised to learn is that FTC is a non-profit and that membership directly sustains the arts in this community. This is the community arts center. The impact FTC has on our community is fueled by the people who live here. The member support surrounding FTC is what continues to make it truly special. It enriches our town on so many levels, helping with overall growth while reinforcing the importance of real community connection and live experiences in an increasingly digital world.

FTC’s mission has always been to connect and enhance our community through the transforming power of the arts by investing in education, presenting diverse programming, keeping ticket prices accessible, and ensuring that the arts remain a cornerstone of civic life here in Fairfield. Membership truly sustains the arts in this community. Being part

of this town’s cultural cornerstone and the FTC family is a true member benefit.

With a packed and exciting Spring and Summer season, FTC audiences have a lot to look forward to, including a lineup of music performances ranging from national touring musicians to local singer-songwriters, a continuation of their film series and the Spring youth theater education program and more theatrical productions from Black Rock Theater including Jesus Christ Superstar June 4-7. We’re also looking forward to the unofficial kickoff to Summer with FTC’s Summer Jam celebration featuring favorite local band Ellis Island and Clear Blue Soul on June 19 and the return of our Summer Cabaret Workshop. The vibes are aplenty.

Be sure to catch it all as we celebrate the 25 incredible years FTC has impacted Fairfield, and to help ensure the next 25. The music, the performances, and the amazing Retrospective are where all that legacy and connection come to life. Says Patsy, “For 25 years, FTC has been the beating heart of Fairfield, bringing people together and enriching our community. FTC’s story isn’t just about artists who played here. It’s about the people, the volunteers, donors, members, and audiences who built this place together. This anniversary belongs to the entire community.”

A Local Perspective on Heat, Cold, and Community

The door opens and warm air wraps around you. The scent of cedar rises with the heat, softened by hints of birch and lemongrass essential oil. A wood-burning stove crackles steadily in the corner. Outside, maybe you can see the shoreline, or trees moving in the breeze, the sun setting in the distance. Inside, conversation hums quietly — then slows. Breath deepens. Shoulders drop. There is something special about stepping into a Nordic inspired sauna.

CONTINUED >

“When you strengthen your nervous system, improve circulation, challenge yourself physically, and create intentional time to disconnect from constant stimulation, the returns compound.”

Fairfield has always felt like a place where people care; about their families, their neighbors, their health, and their quality of life. It’s one of the reasons I chose to build my business here. There’s something special about a coastal town where you can watch the sunrise over the water, run into friends at the farmers market, and gather on the beach for something that might seem a little unconventional: a wood-burning sauna followed by a cold plunge.

My path to founding KiiN wasn’t linear. I began my career in interior design, where I developed a deep appreciation for space, aesthetics, and how environment shapes the way we feel. Later, I transitioned into the wellness field and became a health coach, working directly with individuals to build sustainable habits and better understand how lifestyle impacts physiology. Over time, I became increasingly interested in how the body responds to stress and how we can intentionally build resilience rather than simply react to life’s demands.

KiiN was born from that intersection: design, wellness, nature, and physiology. The idea was simple but powerful — create a beautiful space that brings people together outdoors and reintroduce an ancient practice that strengthens both body and mind.

At its core, contrast therapy — alternating between heat and cold — is about adaptation. In the sauna,

blood vessels dilate, heart rate rises, and circulation increases. When you move into cooler air or cold water, vessels constrict and the nervous system relaxes. That cycle of expansion and contraction supports cardiovascular health, improves circulation, helps reduce inflammation, and trains the body to respond more efficiently to stress. Many people experience better sleep, improved mood, enhanced recovery, and a noticeable sense of mental clarity. Contrast therapy also teaches us something important: we can do hard things.

Moving intentionally between heat and cool challenges us. The initial discomfort is real. Your breath shortens. Your instincts tell you to retreat. But when you stay present, regulate your breathing, and allow your body to adapt, you build resilience. You practice staying calm under stress. You train your nervous system to recover more quickly. Over time, that capacity carries into daily life — into work, parenting, relationships, and moments that demand steadiness. But beyond the measurable benefits, something else happens.

When you gather in a sauna — without phones, without distractions — conversation shifts. People soften. There’s an authenticity that emerges when we sit together in heat and then laugh as we step into the cold. It’s energizing, it’s invigorating — and it’s genuinely fun. In Nordic culture, sauna is woven into daily life — not

as a luxury, but as a communal ritual. I’ve seen friendships form, neighbors meet for the first time, and powerful conversations unfold in that simple wooden space.

Just as important to me as the experience itself is the environment in which it happens. We are exposed to enough synthetic materials, microplastics, and environmental stressors in daily life. At KiiN, we are intentional about using natural materials whenever possible cotton towels instead of synthetics, filtered water in the cold plunge, organic tea served post-session, natural oils, a wood-burning stove rather than electric heat, and nontoxic cleaning products. The goal is to create a clean, low-toxin environment where the body can truly relax and restore.

There are many ways to invest in yourself and all are important but it’s often framed as something external — a financial decision, a career move, a tangible asset. But the most valuable investment any of us can make is in our health. When you strengthen your nervous system, improve circulation, challenge yourself physically, and create intentional time to disconnect from constant stimulation, the returns compound. You have more energy. You respond to stress more calmly. You sleep more deeply. You show up more fully for your family and your work.

Fairfield is fortunate to have a growing number of wellness resources that support this mindset. I regularly attend and partner with many of these local studios, yoga spaces, strength-training facilities, and

small businesses from community gyms to farmers markets because I believe wellness works best when it’s collaborative. By connecting complementary modalities and local practitioners, we strengthen not only individual health but the fabric of our town. And of course, time in nature whether walking at Penfield Beach or hiking at Lake Mohegan remains one of the most accessible and powerful tools we have.

No single practice is a cure-all. The real power lies in layering simple, consistent habits that support circulation, mobility, recovery, emotional resilience — and meaningful human connection.

KiiN operates at Penfield Beach on weekends, with pop-ups throughout Fairfield County. I also bring the sauna and cold plunge to private homes, corporate retreats, and curated wellness gatherings — creating intentional spaces for connection wherever community gathers.

KiiN began as a simple idea: bring people together outdoors and reintroduce an ancient ritual in a modern way. What I’ve witnessed since has reaffirmed something I deeply believe — when we invest in our health, challenge ourselves, and gather in community, we grow stronger together.

And in a town like Fairfield, there’s no better place to sweat, plunge, laugh — and grow stronger together.

Redefining MVP: TIM TEBOW’S LIFE BEYOND FOOTBALL

An exclusive Q&A with City Lifestyle

PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

From championship trophies to global humanitarian impact, Tim Tebow’s journey has defied every standard playbook. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Tebow pulls back the curtain on the moments that truly defined him, from a humbling middle school church retreat to the life-altering shift of fatherhood. This isn’t just a look back at a career; it’s an invitation into the heart of a man driven by purpose. Read the highlights below, then join us for the full, unfiltered experience by scanning the QR code at the end.

Q: WE ALL KNOW YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD, BUT TELL US ABOUT THE CURL CONTEST.

A: I was competing for my future high school team (my brother’s team), and I pushed myself way past what was smart. I ended up collapsing and needing medical attention. But what stayed with me wasn’t the pain, it was the lesson. Would I be willing to do something that others aren’t? For much of my life, I strived to bring my best for a game, but I hope that I can say at the end of my life I was willing to do that for things that actually matter.

Q: YOU’VE ACHIEVED SO MUCH IN SPORTS. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT NOW?

A: Becoming a dad. Nothing compares. From the moment I knew my wife was pregnant, I felt a new depth of love for our child, but when you bring your baby home, the responsibility hits you like nothing else. Suddenly, everything you see, every decision you make, you’re asking, “Is this corner too sharp? What happens if she reaches that drawer?” It changes how you see the world and how you see other people.

Q: YOU’VE SPOKEN OPENLY ABOUT DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY AROUND FOOTBALL. HOW DID THAT SEASON OF LIFE SHAPE YOU?

A: I talked a lot about that very thing in my book Shaken . We all go through moments where our faith in our abilities and purpose feels rattled, but I believe it’s often in those storms when God can show us who we could become.

Q: YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT COMPARISON CULTURE. WHY DO YOU BELIEVE COMPARISON HAS BECOME SUCH A TRAP TODAY?

A: Because we’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel. Social media shows people’s “best day,” often filtered and staged, and then we measure our reality against that. There’s a reason filters are so popular—it’s not real. We end up scrolling through images that don’t tell the full story, and without realizing it, comparison starts to steal our joy and our gratitude.

“We’re comparing our real, everyday lives to someone else’s highlight reel... comparison starts to steal our joy.”

Q: YOUR FOUNDATION FOCUSES ON THE “MOST VULNERABLE.” WHERE DID THAT CALLING BEGIN?

A: When I was 15, I met a boy in the Philippines who was treated as a throwaway because he was born with physical differences. That moment changed me. I realized God was calling me to pursue a different kind of MVP, not “Most Valuable Player,” but “Most Vulnerable People.”

Q: FINALLY, WHAT’S ONE THING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU?

A: I have some weird coffee habits, which include protein powder, collagen, and cream all mixed together. I love golf dates with my wife. And every night, I bring snacks to bed to share with our dogs. It brings me more joy than it probably should.

Plant You r Kitchen Garden

BACKYARD GARDENS OFFER FRESH VEGGIES AND FOOD FOR YOUR SOUL

A quick guide for simple ideas to start off your backyard kitchen garden. With endless health and medicinal benefits, combined with the beauty and enjoyment to be found, gardening is endlessly rewarding.

GETTING STARTED

• Plant your vegetable options right into your beds with flowers, the pollinators (bees, butterflies and more) are attracted to the beautiful flowers and your veggies will easily and abundantly go-tofruit, living harmoniously in one bed.

• Every garden needs a rain gauge - you’ll be surprised at how fun it is to check. There is nothing like rain water for your garden. (This is optional, but definitely fun).

• Get your family involved. It’s never too late!

• Just go for it, our local climate can be weird and often extreme but don’t let it stop you- the most success and fun I’ve had was just going for it. Experiment and see what you love and what works best for you!

• In most cases, when watering, don’t water the petals and leaves, (especially when they’re in direct sunlight) try to water straight to the soil. All they need is water, nutrients and light to thrive! (and maybe a little love helps too!)

• Don’t forget herbs: Lavender, Mint, Lemon Verbena, Oregano, Basil, Cilantro, Parsley and more. Don’t be afraid to skip the spice rack and grab your seasoning from the garden.

What to Plant

Whether starting from seed or seedlings, you can’t go wrong with these options. Start with foods you know you like to eat.

TOMATOES: They’re delicious, money-saving, good for eating fresh and for preserving. Tomatoes come in endless colors, shapes and sizes. Plant them in a sunny location with well-drained soil, ideally in full sun, and ensure they receive consistent moisture, supporting them with cages or stakes as they grow.

OKRA: Okra loves our hot summers and full sun. Don’t wait too long to pick your okra, ideally harvesting them when they are 2 to 4 inches long. Can be eaten raw on a salad or best served deep fried. (The flower that turns into the okra itself is uniquely beautiful as well!)

EGGPLANT: Eggplant is a short season vegetable and a relative of peppers, potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco. It thrives in heat and full sun and can be deliciously made into baba ganoush and many other delicious dishes.

PEPPERS: Like tomatoes, peppers have many purposes and variations. Plant them in a sunny location with welldrained soil after the last frost, spacing them 18 inches apart, and provide consistent watering while ensuring the soil doesn't become waterlogged.

Flowers Bring Pollinators

Flowers bring joy to all five of our senses, but they also bring pollinators to our garden in order to ensure your backyard kitchen will produce lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. Not to mention they also contain health and even medicinal properties.

HIBISCUS:

Make sure your hibiscus plants, whether tropical or hardy, get at least 6 hours of sun per day in order to achieve optimum blooming. Hibiscus flowers can be made into a delicious tea that can be served hot or ice cold (and is a good source of Vitamin C). With over 200 varieties of hibiscus world wide, their blooms only last a day or two! Stunning in all shapes, sizes and colors.

MARIGOLDS:

To the surprise of most people, marigold flowers are edible. Whether used fresh, dried, or infused into various beverages, Marigolds have a multitude of uses in the kitchen. An added benefit of planting these bright and low maintenance flowers next to tomatoes– they help keep pests away from devouring your tomatoes while also encouraging pollinators.

ZINNIAS: PLUMBAGO:

These bright, colorful garden gems have many benefits beyond their beauty and ease of care. Along with attracting pollinators, and being low maintenance they also have medicinal properties. Zinnias have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, they’re rich in antioxidants, and the natural compounds in zinnias can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness.

Plumbago is thought to have many health benefits, such as its anti-ulcer, anti-oxidant, and anti-cancer properties, resulting from its principal chemical components, which are concentrated in the roots, leaves, and stems of plants. This attractive light purple flowering plant thrives in the sun, and has moderate watering needs. Trim and prune to suit your own preferences of growth and it’s a welcome, abundantly beautiful member of any garden.
