November 2023 Publisher’s Letter We always like to take time to reflect upon what we are thankful for. Many times, it is the simplest of things that has brought us so much joy. Years ago, my daughter and I went into The Humane Society to adopt a dog, and we came home with a Treeing Walker Coonhound. Before adopting him, I looked up this dog breed and everything I read told me he would be one disaster of a dog. Bruce, who was not with us then, asked me what I thought about this dog and whether he was right for our family. I told him without hesitation that he would be a perfect family dog. I only half lied. He was a terribly loud barker and a fervent digger. He ran away frequently and he smelled bad too. But he was a great family dog! He loved our family unconditionally, especially our children. He was incredibly loyal. Maybe it was in my head. Maybe I was anthropomorphizing. But every time I looked at that dog, he seemed so thankful that he was rescued. To this day, when we think about Cooper, we feel thankful to have had him as part of our family. In this November issue of Fairfield Lifestyle Magazine, we focus on giving thanks. You will be introduced to Children in Placement, an organization that advocates for abused and neglected children in Connecticut. You will also love reading about the Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University. We are so grateful to have an amazing space to enjoy the performing arts in Fairfield. What are you grateful for? We hope this issue inspires you to take a moment out to reflect on what makes you thankful. And we hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving Fairfield! Champions of Hope Children in Placement ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY COLE PHOTOGRAPHY In a world where childhood should be synonymous with innocence, joy and lightheartedness, the harsh reality is that countless children live in dangerous circumstances - including in our own community. Thankfully, there are organizations that are dedicated to providing a lifeline to those who need it most. Children in Placement is a statewide nonprofit organization. They are a beacon of hope and a steadfast ally for the most vulnerable among us. CIP’s mission goes far beyond immediate intervention to ensure that these children have a healing recovery in a safe, permanent home, creating the space for a happy and fulfilling future. The dedicated, compassionate individuals who make it all possible are at the heart of Children in

Placement’s success. From tireless staff members who navigate the complexities of the child welfare system to the visionary Board of Directors who guide the organization’s mission, each person in the CIP family is driven by an unshakable commitment to the protection and potential of every child. The organization’s backbone is the incredible volunteer advocates, Guardian ad Litem (GAL). These trained volunteers are a critical part of the team. Their focus is to be there every step of the way, supporting and safeguarding each case to secure that every child’s rights and best interests are upheld throughout the legal process. They become the reliable companions, advocates, and friends these kids so desperately need. CONTINUED >

To truly comprehend the impact and effectiveness of CIP’s extraordinary work, it’s the personal stories and feedback that families have shared. Guardian ad Litem Program clients Isabelle and Kenan share their compelling account, “After our daughter tragically passed away, Children in Placement worked tirelessly to ensure that my grandson was permanently placed in our home. We are so grateful for their guidance and support during such a difficult time in our lives.” These are stories of hope, resilience and recovery. And it is only a glimpse into the significant difference Children In Placement’s thoughtful expertise has on the lives of these children and families. Larissa and her four younger siblings were removed from their home when she was just 13 years old. They were living in squalor and were not attending school. Sadly, their mom’s partner was arrested for domestic violence, which all five children witnessed. On top of the trauma that comes from losing a home, a routine, parents, and friends, Larissa couldn’t help but think that their situation was partly her fault. As a result, she became depressed and withdrawn. Larissa and her siblings were placed in a temporary foster home and assigned a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) advocate through Children in Placement. The GAL established a trusting relationship with all the children, identified the children’s education and therapy needs, and worked to help DCF secure permanent placement. In addition, the court mandated steps that their mom needed to follow in order to be reunified with her children. Sadly, their mom struggled to leave her partner for some time. A great-aunt was soon identified, but she had health ailments that would limit her ability to care for the younger siblings long-term. It took two years, but their mom did meet her court requirements, including parting ways with her abusive partner. The younger siblings were reunited with their mom; however, Larissa asked the GAL if she could remain with her aunt. She was thriving in her current school - she made the Honor Roll and joined the Marching Band. The

judge granted permanent custody to her aunt, with a visitation schedule with her mom. Larissa was so grateful for her GAL, who not only helped her find a place where she felt safe, but also became the role model she needed. Twins, Carlos & Jose were moved from their home and placed in state custody after they were found wandering the streets one afternoon. It was determined that their young mom was unable to provide for her boys. Given that the boys had no feasible kinship options due to most of their family living in Guatemala, their Guardian ad Litem (GAL) recommended they be placed in foster care until they could find a forever family through adoption. The GAL also aided in getting the boys the services they needed to help them developmentally, including speaking English. Just six months after being in foster care, the twins were adopted by a loving family who had always dreamed of having twin boys. Children in Placement is a testament to what a community can achieve when it comes together for the well-being of its youngest members. As we highlight CIP’s remarkable achievements, we must also recognize that there is still work to be done. Executive Director Janet Freimuth is at the forefront of this call to action, “Community support is the cornerstone of hope for Connecticut’s child victims. Together, we can provide them with the brighter, more promising futures they deserve. Every ounce of support counts, and it’s our collective commitment that can change the trajectory of their lives.” When a community stands up as the voice for the voiceless, the power to secure that hopeful path forward is unstoppable. The food and the atmosphere are equally sophisticated and stylish yet relaxed and uncomplicated. Using healthful organic ingredients, the menu at Gray Goose is decidedly varied and always delicious. Whether meeting with colleagues for a working lunch, spending a romantic evening with a partner or grabbing a bite at the bar - the experience is always elevated with a skillful artisanal touch.

ROASTED PARMESAN CHICKEN INGREDIENTS: • 14 oz Half chicken breast and leg, bone-in, skin on • 2oz Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2oz White Wine • 2oz Chicken Stock • 1 Teaspoon Fresh Minced Garlic • ½ Cup Grated Parmesan Reggiano • 1 Tablespoon Salted Butter • 1 Bunch Asparagus • Balsamic Vinegar • Salt and pepper to taste CONTINUED >

DIRECTIONS: Chicken Breast 1. In a medium to large sauce pan heat olive oil and then add garlic 2. Sear chicken breast skin side down first, then turn 3. Slowly pour in white wine and cook down 4. Add chicken stock 5. Top chicken breast with grated parmesan and place into preheated oven at 425° 6. Bake for 15-20 minutes and then remove chicken breast from the pan 7. Incorporate butter into the pan and simmer to thicken pan sauce

Asparagus 1. Clean and wash asparagus and break off end of stem at last joint 2. Marinate asparagus in balsamic vinaigrette 3. Grill asparagus and season with salt and pepper Russet Burbank Potatoes for Potato Au Gratin (secret recipe) 1. Premake potato au gratin (or as we call it Potato Lasagna) and let rest and cool 2. Cut into equal portions or squares 3. Heat in oven at 425 for 20 minutes 4. Plate, serve and enjoy!

CENTER STAGE ARTICLE BY SAMANTHA SCHOENGOLD BERANBOM PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY THE QUICK CENTER FOR THE ARTS Fondly known as the Quick, Fairfield University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts is a dynamic and inclusive visual and performing arts center that spotlights artistic expression and is a catalyst for community transformation. The arts have always inspired critical thinking, challenged traditional ideas and can revolutionize our worldview. The Quick Center is a true asset in our own backyard. For over 33 years, The Quick has offered first-rate artistry and speakers in Fairfield County, welcoming more than 40,000 community members and Fairfield University students, faculty, and staff through its doors annually. Each season, the Quick introduces a variety of programming, including contemporary dance, theatre, circus, jazz, classical, chamber, and global music artists. In addition, the Quick presents the Open VISIONS Forum series and its companion, OVF: Espresso series, putting acclaimed authors, journalists, artists, scientists, and politicians at center stage to share their expertise on current events in a town hall setting. The center also has a Membership program that encourages patrons to engage more deeply with programming through behind-the-scenes

access, meet & greets with artists and speakers, special ticket pricing, and educational programs. Another program is the notable partnership between The Quick Center for the Arts at Fairfield University and the Bridgeport Public Schools Department of Performing and Visual Arts called Art for All. Here, students of all ages, from Kindergarten through High School, throughout Fairfield County, can benefit from arts education beyond the classroom. The importance of arts education and its impact on students’ holistic well-being, from academics to social and emotional health, is widely known. Arts for All provides free access to professional artists where students can participate in classes, workshops, conversations, internships, and mentorship programs, typically unavailable to them. The Quick Center has a profound impact on our surrounding community, transcending the boundaries of mere entertainment to become a cornerstone of social and cultural development. The lineup this Fall continues that ethos. The productions are both exciting and compelling. These performances and events not only serve as a platform for artistic expression and talent, but they bring together the center’s patrons -enriching our town.

Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. The simple place setting is enhanced with a dried grass accent and brown silk ribbon tied into a bow to add a special touch to your traditional display. CONTINUED >

Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character. Instead of going with the classic white plate, enjoy a pop of color at your outdoor fall garden party with a blue place setting as a nod to the sky. Adding a cloth napkin and cloth placemat is a great way to add texture and more autumn color to your table. If the weather doesn’t cooperate on your day, bring the outdoors in with a lovely indoor garden party dressed up in fall foliage.
