LIFESTYLE LETTER

SUMMER FUN WITH KIDS & PETS! It’s no secret at Fairfield Lifestyle Magazine that we love kids and pets! That’s why we’re thrilled that our August issue celebrates both. We have been fortunate to raise two wonderful children. It has been exciting and gratifying to see them grow into adults and watch them navigate life. While raising our kids, and even now, our home has always been filled with pets–from dogs to cats to hamsters, and even a leopard gecko. We told each other that having pets was a way to teach our kids responsibility, but that wasn’t completely true. We simply love the company of animals and the love and joy they bring. It has been so long since we have had toddlers in the family that we have almost forgotten the sheer joy preschoolers have when they learn or experience the simplest of things. We were able to relive those years briefly at the photo shoot for our feature on Tabitha’s Ice Cream. Watching 3 kids eat ice cream, wear ice cream, and feed dogs ice cream was a truly amazing experience! It made us recall the wonderment of childhood when all the possibilities for our children seemed endless. We are proud to feature Ellie Haney this month, a truly inspirational young adult. She started a clothing line born out of her struggles with mental health, and not only donates some of her profits to suicide prevention but speaks out about her own story so that others will know they aren’t alone. For the pet obsessed like us, head over to The Dog & Cat Days of Summer where you can find ideas for treats, toys, and gifts for the discerning dog or cat to help them enjoy summer. If a family vacation is on your to do list, check out Family Fun For All, a feature about the Ocean Edge Resort & Golf Club. This resort has every activity you could dream of to make your family feel like they are all away at camp together. For those of you with teenagers, don't miss A Dermatologist’s Dos & Don’ts for Teenage Skincare to learn and teach your teens the best ways to keep their skin healthy. We hope you are enjoying your summer and can take some time to relax and unwind with your family, friends, and pets! Create Healthy Habits A DERMATOLOGIST'S DOS & DON’TS FOR TEENAGE SKINCARE

ARTICLE BY DANA EPSTEIN ALTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY FAIRFIELD DERMATOLOGY

22

S KIN CA R E | HEALTH + W E LLNE S S

“Social media can be a breeding ground for misinformation, influencing teens to buy products they simply don’t need.”

As a partner at Fairfield Dermatology for 14 years, and the mom of four children ages 17, 14, 10, and 8, Dr. Elizabeth Smith is a wealth of knowledge—especially when it comes to teenage skin. “My kids can’t handle complicated regimens, so I keep skincare routines as simple as possible” explains Dr. Smith. She says compliance is critical and recommends limiting steps for teens. She also agrees wholeheartedly that social media can be a breeding ground for misinformation, influencing teens to buy products they simply don’t need. This is exactly why we asked Dr. Smith to break down the “Dos and Don’ts” of teenage skin:

TEEN SKINCARE DON’TS JUST SAY NO TO MASKS: Although masks are occasionally good for the skin, they can often be drying and contain chemicals that can irritate the skin. THE INFAMOUS JADE ROLLER: You don’t need to use a Jade roller for lymphatic drainage. Our bodies, especially when they are young, are very efficient at circulation, both vascular and lymphatic. Jade rollers may be pretty and feel nice, but they won’t improve the skin’s quality. MORE THAN SOAP: Dove soap is wonderful, but it will not clear up acne. Most patients with acne will need a medical or prescription-grade product.

DEEP FREEZE: For any acute swelling, ice has its place but “depuffing” skin daily is not one of them. Neither is frozen cucumbers.

TEEN SKINCARE DOS SUNSCREEN IS NON-NEGOTIABLE! even though the sun feels good, UV radiation is a known carcinogen and skin cancer is prevalent. Look for sunscreens without chemical screens, and that only contain Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. Although these physical sunblocks can sometimes go on white, the formulations have come a long way. GET INTIMATELY FAMILIAR … Get to know your moles even as a teenager, and make sure you seek medical attention if you have a new or changing mole. Also, know the ABCDEs of melanoma, the deadliest skin cancer, so that you can see your dermatologist if something looks suspicious. Be on the lookout for: A-asymmetry, B-irregular borders, C-more than one color, D-diameter greater than a pencil eraser, E-evolving or changing. KEEP IT CLEAN. With the addition of chemicals, dyes and fragrances to so many products, contact dermatitis and allergies can be an issue. Choose products wisely, and when you can, stick with hypoallergenic products free of fragrance and dye.

Left :Dr. Smith offering product recommendations to one of her teenage patients.

Ellie Haney, Founder of Hanesie Clothing

MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE ELLIE HANEY IS "HERE FOR YOU" MESSAGE INSPIRED CLOTHING PROMOTES MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS 26

I NSP IR E D BY | HEA LTH + W E LLNE S S

When 24-year-old Founder of Hanesie Clothes, Ellie Haney, was finishing college in the spring of 2020, the world as we all knew it, came to a grinding halt. Like many college students who lived through the Covid pandemic shutdown, Ellie had her fair share of disappointment as she mourned the loss of what was. But for Ellie, it wasn’t a simple pivot, it was much more than that. A mental health breakdown sent her on a downward spiral—one that fortunately became a mental health breakthrough, as she came out the other side and is now helping spread an important message. Here, she shares her story with the hope it will resonate with those who may be suffering in silence.

WHAT WAS THE IMPETUS FOR STARTING HANESIE? At the beginning of Covid, I was graduating from the University of Delaware. My boyfriend broke up with me, every exciting end of the year plan we had was canceled, “real life” was supposed to be starting, and I couldn’t handle it. I needed to find something to keep me going so I jumped on the tie dye trend and fell in love with the dying process. My creations soon became the reason why I got out of bed in the morning. I started selling on Instagram and to my surprise, people loved them. At the same time, I accepted a corporate job because I thought that’s what I was “supposed” to do. But the way I felt when I was creating my clothing was too overwhelming to just have as a hobby. I knew I was meant for something special. After a lot of brainstorming alongside my astounding team, we came out with our first line and donated 10% of our sales to a nonprofit for suicide prevention.

Ellie wearing her "Here For You" apparel

Love Hard Baseball Hat

Ellie Haney

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO SPREAD MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS? If someone told me six years ago that it was “okay” to not feel “okay”, my life would have looked very different, and I probably wouldn’t have struggled for so long. At least not in silence. I talked about mental health to my therapist, but not to my family or friends. If it was normalized for me, I would have not felt so scared, ashamed, and alone. I want to be real and stand in my truth so someone else feels empowered to ask for help. WHAT INSPIRES YOU? The people in my life. The love I receive from my community. The support to keep going, keep talking, and keep creating. The people that see our message and need it to get though the day but don’t have the courage to say that yet. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CURRENT COLLECTIONS “HERE FOR YOU” AND “LOVE HARD” Every line that we create is inspired by my personal life. The ideas come from within, and they are vulnerable, making the pieces ever so beautifully imperfect.

“OUR HOPE IS THAT WHEN YOU WEAR LOVEHARD YOU FEEL WARMTH, ALLOWING IT TO SPARK YOUR JOURNEY TOWARD SELF-DISCOVERY, ACCEPTANCE, AND EVENTUALLY LOVE.”

“Here For You” was our first collection about feeling that you’re not alone. When you see a stranger walking down the street in a hoodie, it’s proof that someone else is standing with you and you are part of our community. Our “Lovehard” line is our vulnerable, unapologetic take on self-love. Our hope is that when you wear Lovehard you feel warmth, allowing it to spark your journey toward self-discovery, acceptance, and eventually love. On every lovehard piece there is a heart embroidered in a different place, proving that the love is literally on you, in you.

WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING YOU’VE OVERCOME? Asking for help when I needed it. I never considered medication because I never wanted people to think something was wrong with me. When I launched Hanesie, it gave hope and confidence. I started feeling more comfortable in my own skin and I started sharing and felt less alone. I was ready to ask for help. A few months ago, my doctor prescribed anti-anxiety medication and I finally feel like I’m starting to live. Nothing is close to perfect, but I feel brave, strong, and free. ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR SOMEONE STRUGGLING? I put my heart into this brand every day because I believe so strongly in the importance of mental health awareness. Help is necessary and life changing. We deserve to live and feel alive. Don’t hide in your head, find a platform, a community, or one person to confide in, even just a little bit. hanesie.com AUGUST 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Ente r for a chance to win a geta way to Laguna Beach! Read on for details.

When it comes to prestigious travel hospitality, The Ranch at Laguna Beach is highly regarded by luxury and discerning travel authorities such as Conde Nast, Forbes, and Travel & Leisure for its congenial service, elevated ambiance and reputable guest experience. The upscale, outdoor wellness offerings range from the uniquely designed 9-hole golf course within the canyon setting to the full-time farmer facilitating outstanding local dishes offered on the original homestead of Laguna Beach. At the helm of this privately owned ranch is lifelong Laguna Beach resident Mark Christy, who works alongside his wife Laurie, who hails from surfing pioneer Hobie Alter. Together they took the original architecture of this hotel property and fully renovated it from top to bottom. With a strong focus on sustainability, the property centers itself on earth-friendly practices such as line-caught seafood from neighboring coves, genuine farm to table ingredients from the Harvest Garden (which guests can tour), recycled glass and composting that return to the sand and dirt on site, and other sustainability measures. When it comes to feasting on the local fare, resident restaurant and bar, Harvest, focuses on organic farming for seasonal breakfast, lunch and dinner options.

It boasts beautiful 180-degree views of Aliso Canyon as well as craft cocktails to sip and savor while overlooking the first tee of the golf course. If sand beneath your feet is more your dining style, make the short walk to Aliso beach where you will find Lost Pier, an elevated eatery serving the likes of warm beignets and coffee in the morning, and ceviche, shrimp rolls and fisherman’s catch fish tacos for lunch. Gather your fellow travelers around an oceanfront fire pit complete with beach chairs and umbrellas. Enjoy live music every night where locals mix in with the guests at this popular venue. The Ranch’s 9-hole golf course and country club has views unlike any other. Take in the tranquil canyon aesthetic where deer frolic, and you’ll soon forget anything other than the moment you are in. Laguna Beach has also had a massive impact on the surfing world, which began with native Californian Hobie Alter who invented the fiberglass surfboard that you’ll find most common with both pros and surf hobbyists. Surfing remains an important element of Laguna Beach’s culture, and nearby Dana Point is the most famous beach for “skimboarding” on the accessible shore waves, in which surfers run into the approachable waves, throw their boards down, and surf their way into the ocean. And what would the Laguna Beach culture be without all of the seaside activities? Kayaking, snorkeling and diving, whale and dolphin watching, SUP—you name it, you can experience it. In fact, Laguna Beach is not only the top place in the world to shore dive, but their dolphin community is larger than Florida, Hawaii and the Caribbean combined, thanks to their marine protection program enlisted years ago that attracts marine life to the calm waters and rich kelp to feed on. Take a two-hour guided kayak tour and visit Seal Rock for more sealife observation. Throughout your stay, you of course will want to make your way into town for endless entertainment options of “Laguna flavor.” Visit the community theater, The Laguna Playhouse, where Harrison Ford got his start. Hop on a free trolley and pop from brewpub Laguna Beach Beer Company pouring locally made craft beer, to one of two wine-tasting rooms where McClain Cellars serves award-winning wines from Santa Ynez Valley. If craft beer is your jam, LBBC names each creation after different places around the community, even dubbing one “The Greeter” after an infamous tourist who never left the area, greeting all who entered this inviting and charming town. If wine is more your style, McClain Cellars only offers their wine locally in Laguna Beach, outside of their Santa Barbara area vineyard. The “you can only find it here” sentiment is a special aspect of Laguna Beach and supports why people return repeatedly and begin to call this place their home away from home. Complement your thirst with a variety of cuisines among more than 100 restaurants to choose from. Local favorites include The Royal Hawaiian Fire Grill for a twist on Hawaiian flavors in a tiki-style venue, Las Brisas for its incredible brunch menu and scenic views of Laguna’s Heisler Park overlooking cliffs that resemble the French Riviera, Broadway by Amar Santana for some of the most elevated cuisine you will find from a multi-Top Chef finalist, along with cocktails crafted seasonally by the restaurant’s mixologist. Lastly, The Cliff Restaurant offers one of the best views in the area with all outdoor eating and delicious tacos. Depending on the time of year you visit, you’ll find a wide selection of live music and festivals. Two notable summer festivals include the Pageant of the Masters where famous paintings come to life… literally on human bodies that pose to look like counterparts in the originals, as well as the Sawdust Art & Craft Festival with a focus on locally made crafts.

You’ll also find live music at many of the restaurants around town, including Mozambique and The Cliff Restaurant, perfect places to relax and enjoy after exploring the area’s abundant art galleries. Take advantage of First Thursday’s Art Walk year round, often including live paintings and musicians, dance performances and gorgeous art you won’t find anywhere else. Take the trolleys from gallery to gallery, and be sure to include the Laguna Art Museum, the second oldest museum in the state of California, specializing in California-themed art and artists. A special component to the Laguna Beach art scene is its foundation on ‘en plein air’ paintings, the outdoor painting style that Monet made famous. Every year the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational attracts painters from around the country

to participate in a week’s worth of events, including a two-hour challenge of live painting. Visitors can enjoy this unique experience only in Laguna as they observe the variations between the artists, even being able to purchase the creations while the paint is still wet. It’s a fantastic opportunity for art collectors looking to add to their personal assortment. In short, Laguna Beach is seven miles of coves and beaches uniquely its own with breathtaking cliffs and recreational canyons and a hippy-loving-self-expression-embracing artist colony that you won’t want to miss in this lifetime. What you see today strongly resembles what you would have seen 50 years ago. Laguna Beach is a special destination, and we hope we have inspired you to add it to your travel bucket list! CONTINUED >

SUMMER FUN AT TABITHA’S ICE CREAM ARTICLE BY DANA EPSTEIN ALTMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY ABBY COLE PHOTOGRAPHY

I SCREAM, YOU SCREAM, WE ALL SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM! 36

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | FOOD + BE VE RAGE

Tabitha!

Ice cream for everyone!

Ice cream party!

Team Tabitha!

Nothing screams summer like kids, dogs, and ice cream! You’re guaranteed to get all three at Tabitha’s Ice Cream. Their newest Fairfield location is open year-round serving up delicious ice cream with a smile. We checked in with owner, Susan Hickey, for the proverbial scoop…

3 scoops are better than 1!

Shirley Temple and Argh Pirate Mint Chip, as well as Jay’s famous Cannoli ice cream! Some of our vegan flavors are from Nutty Bunny in Norwalk.

MOST POPULAR ICE CREAM FLAVOR? Mint Chip and Toasted Almond

HOW DID THE SHOP GET ITS NAME? We met Tabitha on the boardwalk ten years ago. When we took over the boardwalk’s ice cream shop in 2019, it seemed obvious that we should name our shop after our best buddy. Tabitha joined our family in 2020 after the passing of her owner, Bill.

IS TABITHA’S A FAMILY BUSINESS?

MOST POPULAR SPECIALTY SUNDAE? By far the Brown-Eyed Girl! It has brownie-chip ice cream, a warm brownie, covered in hot fudge, whipped cream, and chocolate sprinkles, accompanied by a “specialty sound-byte” that comes with most of our specialties!

Tabitha’s is owned by me, my two daughters, Charlotte and Hilary, and my business partner Jack Van Sant.

YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR?

HOW DO YOU KEEP THINGS LOCAL?

FUN FACT?

We source our ice cream mainly from Praline’s Own Made Ice Cream, a family-owned business based in Wallingford, Connecticut. We also offer multiple flavors of Miccalizzi’s Italian Ice as well as custom-made flavors, such as our exclusive

Our specialty menu is what dictated the decor, with designated selfie spots for some of our sundaes. Enjoy a Jimmy Buffett key lime milkshake beside tropical scenery, or a New Yorker cheesecake sundae near a cityscape and real walk sign!

Vanilla!
