At Rocky Branch Golf Course you will enjoy the pace of play, the strategic layout, a friendly staff, and a spectacular clubhouse. On the front nine, you'll find friendlier fairways. Make the turn to the back nine and you'll see more trees that define the holes, making the fairways tighter, and the holes harder. The creek that goes through Rocky Branch invites you to hit over it five different times.
Columbia County native Mike Carraway shares about living and serving in Evans
ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM CONWAY PHOTOGRAPHYWHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT EVANS?
Evans is the community I have always called home. Having said that, over the course of my life, I have lived in all the districts of Columbia County except the Lakeside District, but we have been in Evans for the last 23 years.
The greatest thing that I love about Evans is it still feels like a small community even though it is getting bigger. When I go to the grocery store, a park, or a concert, I see people I know… not just one or two people, but many people. I also love that it is a very safe place to live and raise a family.
WHAT ARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE PLACES IN EVANS?
We have best-in-class parks and recreation spaces that the county has invested in and I’m very thankful for that. With our grandkids, I'm back at all the parks watching sports at many of those spaces. As I've gotten older, I've also had to make sure to exercise, so I walk at Lady A Park and I enjoy it. The canal is also a wonderful place to bike and walk. The Performing Arts Center is a nice addition to our community as well. As a family, we're starting to enjoy that more and more.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO INVEST IN THE COMMUNITY?
It’s important to me for my children and grandchildren to want to be part of Columbia County. Over the last 10 or 15 years, there has been responsible growth in Evans, and I want to continue that and make sure that my grandchildren have the same kind of opportunities that I've had. My involvement in the Planning
and Zoning Commission made me realize how important it is to give back to the community and how important it is that somebody who has our values steps up to serve to ensure the continued responsible growth of our community.
I’m fortunate that both my children are still here, and both are involved in education. We have a great school system and I think our community as a whole works together with the school system and the county to make sure that we are top in that area, and I’d like to see that collaboration continue.
I’m in the insurance business and about eight years ago, I moved my business, ACHS Insurance, to Columbia County as a way of investing back into the community that means so much to me. I am also a board member of The Shield Club of Greater Augusta, an organization that has been around for many years. We step in if an officer is hurt, or in need in some kind of way, by making financial contributions to them or their family. We have also given service dogs to the Sherriff’s Departments in both Richmond and Columbia Counties as well as providing vests and radios for officers in the school system.
A native of Columbia County, Mike Carraway married his high school sweetheart, Sandra, forty years ago this fall. Together, they have two children and four grandchildren, who he says are the biggest joy of his life right now. Mike enjoys being active in the community and has received numerous accolades for his service, including being named Man of the Year for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society.

EXPERIENCE OCEAN DEPTHS AND JUNGLE SAFARIS WITH AGGRESSOR ADVENTURES
“Now, we’re up to forty destinations around the world and we add a couple more every year. It’s been a pleasure to have and I enjoy coming to the office every day.
Exciting adventures all around the world for scuba diving and safari tours begin with Aggressor Adventures. It was first started by Paul Haines in 1984 and he operated the business with his family. Fast forward to 1999, Wayne Brown and his teen son were looking for fun activities they could do together. “I knew that once he turned sixteen, he would be out driving around with his friends. I asked him about trying scuba diving with me and he said yes. We went and took a class and just loved it,” says Wayne. Once Wayne’s daughter was old enough, she also started scuba diving with them.
“When my son went off to college, my daughter and I started traveling to different places around the world to scuba dive. A lot of other divers told us that we should go to the Galápagos Islands because it’s such an amazing place,” he shares. “I looked up the Galápagos Aggressor there that people had told me about, booked it, and went for a week. Not only was the diving incredible because you’re down there with whale sharks and eagle rays, but the service was just outstanding. Every evening there was a five-star white tablecloth meal with wine,” says Wayne.
That next year, they went to Belize on the Belize Aggressor and experienced the same amazing service. “I was talking to the captain about the company and how I’ve always been a fan of high end customer service because I know how hard it is to deliver it and deliver it constantly. He told me that Paul had passed away and his kids had the company up for sale.” Wayne contacted the son who was currently
running the business in October of 2006 and in April of 2007, Wayne bought the business and was officially the new owner. At the time it was called Aggressor Fleet and it was strictly scuba diving with eight locations around the world. “I took a year to really wrap my head and hands around the company and shape it into how I wanted it to run going forward,” says Wayne. In 2012, he changed the name to Aggressor Adventures and started offering river cruises, safari lodges, and signature lodges. “Now, we’re up to forty destinations around the world and we add a couple more every year. It’s been a pleasure to have and I enjoy coming to the office every day.”
Aggressor Adventures is able to take care of everything for your trip. “We have access to every airline reservation worldwide so we can do your flights, hotels, and rental cars. We are your one stop shop for your adventure vacation,” he explains. Each day on your trip, Aggressor Adventures provides a full breakfast, a mid morning snack such as hot cinnamon buns or brownies, a big buffet lunch, an afternoon snack, and a sit down tablecloth dinner. The five-star dinner is typically steaks, salmon, or other freshly caught fish, with beer and wine included. “We try to give back economically to the local communities we’re at as much as possible,” Wayne shares. The food that is prepared is made with locally grown produce and they hire as many locals as they can.

Local teen is getting ready to compete at the Drive, Chip, & Putt
Meet Kipp Madison, the 13-year-old local golf prodigy gearing up for the Drive, Chip, & Putt at Augusta National Golf Course. His golf journey started with plastic clubs and living room drives when he was just two years old. “Golf just clicked for him at an early age. He’s always loved a good challenge and being active,” says Lori, Kipp’s mom.
For Kipp, golf is a family affair. His father, Earl, has supported Kipp from day one and he, along with Kipp’s brothers, love joining him on the green. “There is nothing Earl and I love more than watching and caddying for our boys. It is so inspiring to see how he has matured and the drive he has to compete,” shares Lori.
Among Kipp’s favorite playing partners is Dr. Jim Shikle, a member of Westlake, whom he shares a weekly round with. Another source of inspiration is professional golfer Justin Thomas, known for his kindness and generosity toward his fans.
But it’s not just about birdies and bogeys, Lori knows there’s more to golf than meets the eye. “Golf teaches you about integrity, patience, and how to handle yourself in bad situations,” she says.
Kipp’s achievements on the course speak volumes about his talent and dedication. From impressive finishes in prestigious tournaments to personal milestones like a career-low round of 65, his journey is marked by determination and skill. However, beyond the wins and honors, it’s the unforgettable moments that truly define Kipp’s golfing experience. From sinking a 30-foot putt to seal victory for Team Georgia in The Border Cup to sharing a memorable encounter with golf legend Nick Faldo, each memory contributes to his passion for the game.
As Kipp prepares for his big day at the Augusta National, it’s clear his love for the game is more than making pars and birdies. It’s about making memories and loving every minute on the course.
