Paws in Paradise Luxury Resort & Spa recently expanded two new buildings to pamper our loved pets. We talked with co-owners Natalie and Jennifer and learned the inspiration behind the business and what their favorite drinks are! It’s so exciting to watch local businesses flourish and even more awesome to watch locals rally together and show their support! Major Clay Smith Columbia County Sheriff's Office As the head of Management Services Bureau, Clay uses his thirty-four years of law enforcement experience to oversee a wide range of departments and services provided through the Sheriff’s Office including Community Services, Information Technology, Records, and several other divisions. “I really enjoy having positive interactions with the citizens of Columbia County through some of our programs such as the Citizens Law Enforcement Academy, the Citizens Firearms Class, and a Day with a Deputy,” says Clay. “My favorite programs are probably the Scam Awareness presentations I do with different groups, many of them at churches and with senior groups. I get to interact with my audience and they get to share their stories. Then, sometimes six or seven months later, they call me and tell me they didn't fall for a scam because they remember the presentation.”

Meredith Gentry, Board Member That’s What Friends Are For “Our primary mission is to educate the public on the importance of spay/neuter and offering low cost vouchers to families in the community that have low income or who may be struggling financially to pay for these types of veterinarian's procedures,” shares Meredith. The group also works with organizations and veterinarians in the community to bring feral cat colonies under control and provide care for stray animals who become injured. As a completely volunteer-led nonprofit organization, all donations go directly towards helping animals. Fundraisers are held throughout the year and include a doggy beauty pageant, on-line auctions, and individual fundraisers and sponsorships for specific needs as they arise.

Charles Welch Every Friday morning, Charles Welch and a group of volunteers go to Greene Street Mission Center and minister to the homeless by bringing them a Christ Centered Worship Service and a hot meal. “Our servers are people who want to bring the Love of God to folks who are struggling,” says Charles. On average, there are fifteen to twenty volunteers and together they serve around forty people every week. “Our volunteers will sit with our guests at round tables each week to get to know them and pray for them,” says Charles.

Danelle Butzin Danelle Butzin was pulling into her neighborhood and noticed smoke coming from behind a house. She thought it was just a bonfire, but something told her that she should drive to the home and check. As she pulled up to the house, she saw that the smoke was coming from the backyard. When she approached the backyard, she saw a woman that was crying and she told Danelle that her yard was on fire. Danelle quickly called 911, grabbed a water hose, and started spraying the yard to keep the fire from spreading. She was able to put out 70% of the fire before the fire department arrived. Thanks to Danelle’s courage, she was able to take action quickly and help the woman. “God talks, but do we always listen? I don’t always, but that day I did,” says Danelle. Thank you for your bravery!

“While my husband and I lived in Michigan, when we were traveling, we would board our dogs in a luxury facility that had cameras, TVs, and things like that,” shares Anne Dysinger. “When we moved here, there really was nothing like it in the area.” To fill this niche, Anne and her husband, Eric, opened Paws in Paradise in 2018 to offer luxury pet services including overnight boarding, daytime care resort visits, dog training, and grooming. The community response has been so fantastic that this spring, Paws in Paradise expanded by adding two new buildings which will open up an additional one hundred and sixty-two rooms for dogs and numerous new play yards. As the name implies, these are not simply ordinary pet services…. they offer the next level in pet care. “Inside our facility, the spaces look like a room and have a glass door with a handle, which allows the dogs to see each other across the hallway,” says Anne. “Dogs room individually unless they have siblings, meaning dogs from the same family can room together. Each room has a TV and a camera which has private access for viewing. The parents get a password so they can see their dogs 24/7.” For boarding, Paws in Paradise supplies a comfortable pet bed and

encourages parents to bring whatever they feel will help their pet be comfortable during their stay, as long as the items do not become a hazard. They also offer add-ons for boarding which include snuggle sessions, facetime sessions with parents, brush and massage, ice cream, bedtime story, and a special birthday package full of fun extras. The dogs also enjoy interactive play dates with other guests. “We take them outside for play groups for about twenty minutes, depending on the weather,” says Anne. “The playgroups are made up of ten to twelve dogs and they're always monitored by an animal attendant. The groups are matched based on size but mostly temperaments - so we have the ones that play rough, the old timers, and the puppies in different groups.” “The playgroup rotation works well because it's better for dogs to have a burst of activity and then just chill for a little bit rather than being stimulated the entire time they are here,” she adds. “There are also cameras in the play yards that are public so everybody can see those video feeds on our website.” For pets of the feline persuasion, Purr Paradise serves a place made especially for them. “It's separate from the dogs,” explains Anne. “Cats

have three-level condos, with the bottom having a place where they go potty and then they can go up in the condo and sit up higher.” The cat condos also include glass doors for the cats to be able to see activity in the surrounding area. Pet grooming and dog training services focus on convenience for pet parents and a one-on-one experience for each pet, with an intentional focus on positive interactions. “We offer pet grooming because it's very easy for parents to drop off a dog for the day care in the morning, have them groomed while they are here, pick them up, and go home - that saves a second appointment to go somewhere else to have your dog groomed,” says Anne. The groomers also work with pets who have anxiety about grooming by slowly acclimating them to each step of the process. “With our dog training, the goal is to promote a relationship between the dog and the parent,” explains Anne. “We focus on basic obedience and on specific behavior like food guarding, being fear reactive, pulling on the leash when they're walking, and things like that. We also have a 30-minute add-on where if the parents work a lot and they don't have the time to continue with a training, we will work with a dog while they're here.” Paws in Paradise is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week with an overnight staff who cleans the entire facility and checks on all the guests staying overnight. The lobby is open seven days a week 7:00am-7:00pm for drop-off/pick-up, which allows pet owners great schedule flexibility. Tours are also available during those same hours and no appointment is necessary for a tour. Paws in Paradise is located at 4319 Evans to Locks Road in Evans. WHAT IS FIRST TEE? First Tee is an international program developed to introduce young people to positive core values through the game of golf. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and the Augusta chapter, which was established in 2001, is governed by the FORE Augusta Foundation. Golf is an independent sport and you keep your own score. We can think of no better sport to illustrate the core values of all the things that First Tee holds dear. We have nine core values that our curriculum has been based on from the very beginning: courtesy, respect, judgment, responsibility, sportsmanship, confidence, honesty, integrity, and perseverance. All First Tees teach the same curriculum. We have the flexibility to modify our lesson plans; these values are something we hold dear in the culture of our chapter here in Augusta. It's very important to us that this is a place where those core values are taken seriously. Whether it's on the golf course or just a given day when kids are hanging out around here, we use every opportunity to embrace coachable moments to bring everything back to the core values.

WHAT PROGRAMS DOES FIRST TEE OFFER? We have an aged-based curriculum for students starting at age seven and going through high school. Our classes are broken down by age categories and we try to keep a ratio of one coach to eight students. Whether you are a beginner, never picked up a club in your life, or you've played a little bit, all students come in with their age group. Our classes are normally eight weeks long and meet once a week for 1.5 to 2 hours.

The class is $100, but we never turn students away because they don't have the money to pay. There are also some students who have no equipment, and we do whatever we can to make sure that students have the equipment that they need. Thankfully, we have people who donate clubs, especially junior clubs, to help meet this need. We also partner with schools to do school day programming because we know that there are parents who either do not have the availability to get their kids here or they just may not do it if they were going on interest alone. When we partner with schools, especially Title One schools, we pay for the buses to bring the kids here during the day, so the kids get the exposure and then they can go home and tell their parents they have played golf today. We also give them our information and a full membership here so they can come back and practice.

HOW DOES FIRST TEE AUGUSTA MAKE GOLF A SUSTAINABLE ACTIVITY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE? We want to have an ongoing relationship with these kids and families in the area so that they can genuinely benefit from the positive things that the game has to offer. People take a lot of pride in introducing or exposing young people to things, but we really work hard to make sure that we go beyond exposure. It's so easy to expose someone to something and then, when they find out they love it, they no longer have access to it. So, our goal here at First Tee has really evolved into not just exposing, but really introducing, students to golf and then making sure that we provide an ongoing access to the game in an affordable way. One of the ways we do this is through our six-hole golf course where students pay $1 a bucket to hit balls and $1 to play a round of golf.

HOW CAN THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT THE MISSION OF FIRST TEE AUGUSTA? There are several ways people from the community can get involved. We invite the public to come out and just play the golf course during the day. It

is six holes, so it's perfect for someone who's learning the game or perhaps is retired and doesn't want to spend four or five hours playing golf. The second thing is volunteering, whether it's being a volunteer coach or assisting with some other administrative tasks. Another way is to donate golf equipment or provide financial support. Rock Fore! Dough is our biggest fundraiser and it is held the Tuesday of Masters Week. All the money raised from the concert goes to benefit First Tee Augusta. We're able offer our programs because of very generous financial support from the community… it is what allows us to keep accessible golf readily available for the young people we serve. Goat Kick Coffee Company has become wildly popular throughout the CSRA since they first opened their mobile coffee trailer in 2021. Not long after, they opened Goat Kick Coffee Roasters on Belair Road, where they serve guests and also where they roast their coffee beans. This past March, Goat Kick Coffee expanded again by opening their newest cafe in Evans Towne Center. How did Goat Kick Coffee get started? Jennifer Bojescul, co-founder of Goat Kick Coffee, previously had a career in the medical industry. She was unhappy and wanted to go back to her job as a barista. After talking with Natalie Jacobs, who was in a similar situation, they decided to open their mobile coffee trailer. They quickly started working and had to decide a business name. “We discovered the Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi. We read up on the story and really wanted to come up with a name that was about the legend of coffee. Kaldi was observing his goats that had been eating off of the coffee cherry tree. Overnight he noticed the goats were dancing and kicking around. That’s how we came up with the name Goat Kick,” says Jennifer. “The whole goal of Goat Kick the past two years has been to open this place. This is our dream and we are so excited.”
