For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement. It presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue. But for others, January can be a reminder of failed attempts from years past and the burden of expectation that this year will be different. We approached this issue of Evans City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. When it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home and personal health – it’s not what you do some days that move the needle - it’s what you do MOST days. For better or worse! For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable. Having a beautiful steak dinner with a few cocktails and creme brulee every night for dinner isn’t best for your health, but doing so once in a while might be fine! It’s not the sometimes choices we make, it’s the most of the time choices. So plan the vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness community or gym AND enjoy that dessert you’ve been wanting to try. Wade Padgett Superior Court Judge, Columbia Judicial Circuit As a Superior Court Judge, Wade Padgett fills the vital role of impartial arbitrator between people who have disputes and when sentencing is required, he does so with a bent towards rehabilitation. Wade also dedicates time and attention to training new superior court judges in Georgia; over one hundred and twenty in the last seven years. In 2019, he and Judge Tain Kell (Cobb Circuit retired) launched The Good Judge-ment Podcast, an easily accessible format to provide training and continuing education for judges, lawyers, law students, and even ordinary citizens. “We're doing all this training because we want to give back,” shares Wade. “We try very hard to make it as entertaining as we know how to make it, while keeping it accurate and informative.”
Billy Roberts Manager of Business Development, ProMedica Hospice Billy Roberts has worked with ProMedica Hospice for three years. “My goal is always about the patient being put first and to help and serve in any way I can,” he shares. Another part about what Billy does is providing the patient with a higher level of care in their home and getting the family more at ease so they can spend more time with their loved one. Billy was nominated as a Hometown Hero by an anonymous family who used ProMedica twice this year. “He treated us like we were family,” they say. “One of the times we needed him, he was on vacation. Even from the beach, Billy was able to provide the care that we needed and called us several times that week to make sure we were ok.” CONTINUED >

Patrisia Miller Secretary, Augusta Elks Lodge #205 Members of Augusta Elks Lodge #205 have always been big supporters in the community and especially for local veterans. “We do a lot of volunteer work,” says Patrisia Miller, Secretary of the Elks Lodge. Patrisia has been a member of the Elks Lodge since 2008 and loves serving people. “We have a special needs dance every fall and we also do a lot for veterans. We go every month to the VA nursing home and serve sandwiches, cookies, and sodas. We also bought guitars for the veterans that take lessons at the VA hospital,” says Patrisia.

TERIYAKI STIR FRY Ingredients • One crown of broccoli, washed and cut into bite sized pieces • One yellow squash, washed and cut into bite sized pieces • One Zucchini, washed and cut into bite sized pieces • One tablespoon of vegetable oil • 1/3 cup frozen, chopped onion • Soy Vay Veri Veri Teriyaki Sauce • Salt and Pepper, to taste • Garlic powder, to taste • One cup uncooked rice • Protein, recommended is chicken or tofu • Other optional vegetables are peas, carrots, bell pepper, and snap peas Instructions 1. Cook rice according to directions and choice of protein, set aside. 2. In a large pan, cook the chopped onions with the oil on medium heat until fragrant. 3. Add broccoli, squash, zucchini, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. 4. Cook until the broccoli has reached desired tenderness. 5. Once your vegetables are done, add in cooked protein, rice, and add Teriyaki Sauce until satisfied. CONTINUED >

STAY ACTIVE Davis Mellick PA-C says that taking a brisk walk can have a tremendous effect on our immune system. “Exercise is going to help us with our cardiovascular health; our mental health and give us more energy. There are multiple benefits to exercising,” says Davis. Monitoring your heart rate while exercising can be helpful but isn’t necessary. When exercising, your skin should glisten a little bit and you should be slightly winded. Going outside and kicking a soccer ball around or playing basketball are also great options.

WASH YOUR HANDS By using just basic soap and water, we can wash away germs and prevent illnesses. “Teach your kids how to wash their hands and how to do so for an adequate amount of time,” says Davis. “Have them sing the ABCs twice while they scrub as a sign that they’ve done it long enough.”
EAT A WELL-BALANCED DIET

Davis tells us that having a good diet can decrease complications from illnesses and can help improve healing. “A balanced diet means lots of veggies. Avoid fast food and processed foods,” he suggests. To make sure our kids are also staying healthy and growing strong, we need to make sure they are eating a balanced diet with lots of vegetables and avoiding the processed foods and fast foods. If you have picky eaters at home, Davis has some suggestions. “A great way to hide vegetables in soups is to chop them up really fine. You’d be amazed at how much spinach or kale you can hide before a kid notices it,” says Davis. “The other thing is retraining the taste buds. When we’re introducing a new food, we may have to introduce it anywhere from eight to twelve times before someone starts liking it.” Get your kids involved in the kitchen. “Getting them involved in the process will make them more likely to want to eat it because they’re seeing some ownership there,” says Davis. Portion control also plays a big part in our health. “We are inundated with inaccurate representations of portions in the US,” he explains. Some techniques he

PREVENTATIVE HEALTH “The new year is a great time to commit to preventive health as a family,” says Davis. “Get an appointment scheduled with a primary care provider or a pediatrician to get baseline lab work to monitor everything like cholesterol and diabetes. Those are all things that can not only decrease how frequently we may get sick, but it’s so much easier to manage and treat if we detect it early; especially in older adults as we start doing cancer screening, colonoscopies, and mammograms.
