LIFESTYLE LETTER

Happy New Year, Evans! It’s a new year, and that signifies new beginnings and a fresh start. With how busy life becomes, it is a nice reprieve to be still for a moment and reflect on where we have been, what the past year has taught us, what we want to grow and learn from, and where we want to go from there. The practice of establishing new goals or a resolution for the coming year is something that can help us focus on what is truly a priority or at least what should be. Some of the most popular New Year resolutions center around getting healthier and spending more time with the people we cherish. Other goals may be more community focused and revolve around being intentional about finding ways to help people in need in our city. Whatever your goals may be this year, know that the simple act of making a goal is a great first step. We then just have to move from simply thinking about doing those things and make a daily decision to act on them. We talked to Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa about the amazing benefits of Himalayan salt. Their Himalayan salt cave is relaxing, great for mental health, and helps with allergies and skin conditions such as acne. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over fifty million adults in the U.S. live with chronic pain. Dr. Nicholas DeAngelo, founder of the FX Spine and Performance Center in Evans, strives to address chronic pain issues in patients with the goal of getting them back to doing the things they love most and living a high-quality life. The importance of being healthy in body, mind and spirit is the focus of this issue. Our hope for you in this New Year is one of wellness, health and love. Here's to a healthy and happy 2022!

Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa Experience the Amazing Benefits of Himalayan Salt ARTICLE BY BAILEY MORRIS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JARIUS SMITH

When you first step inside the Himalayan salt cave, you feel a wave of calmness come over you and all of your worries instantly wash away. The salty air and twinkling lights make for an unforgettable experience. Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa is easily the most relaxing place to be. “It’s great for mental health, depression, anxiety, stress relief, and PTSD,” says Michelle Grant. “Everybody is stressed these days and it’s amazing how tranquil the cave is. You decompress there and forget where you are.”

Owners Michelle Grant and Dan Finn first visited a salt cave while traveling with friends in 2018. They fell in love with the cave and the many benefits it offers. At the time, Michelle was suffering from extreme allergies and realized while relaxing in the salt cave that she could breathe normally again. “We actually opened our doors two years to the day after we visited the salt cave in Asheville. I’ve never felt better in my life. I had suffered from allergies for thirty-five years. I’ve had two sinus surgeries and CONTINUED >

after a few months, I was right back to where I was before,” says Michelle. Now, Michelle no longer suffers from allergies and has been medication free since January 2021. Relaxing in the salt cave can bring many benefits. It helps with respiratory issues such as allergies, sinusitis, ear, sinus, and upper respiratory infections, cystic fibrosis, bronchitis, asthma, COPD, emphysema, pneumonia, and snoring. It also helps with skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, rashes, water retention, swelling and inflammation, and dry, itchy skin. The salt cave can even bring you a sense of wellbeing by helping alleviate stress, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. “The salt cave is a 430 square foot manmade cave. There are stalactites hanging from the ceiling, four inches of salt on the floor, and the walls are made of chunks of Himalayan salt,” says Dan. “A machine called a halogenerator crushes up pharmaceutical grade salt and then blows it into the room so while you are sitting there relaxing, you’re inhaling the salty air. It gets into your lungs and opens up the respiratory system.” Michelle tells us that the salt is antiviral, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal. “This is one of the most sterile places you can be in right now,” says Michelle. Salt therapy is new to the U.S., but is popular in other countries since being discovered in the mid 1800’s. It evolved from the salt mines in Europe and Russia when Dr. Boczkoawski noticed that the salt mine workers rarely suffered from respiratory issues. It was known as Speleotherapy, a respiratory therapy which involves the breathing of salt infused air in a microclimate of a salt mine. “It is respiratory hygiene - keeping the airways open, breaking up congestion, and building your immune system,” says Michelle. Also offered at Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa is the Private Zen Room, a salt cave for kids, Full Spectrum Sauna, yoga classes

in the cave, and the Amethyst BioMat. A massage therapist, who is also a licensed esthetician, works on site and offers a variety of services as well. “The Amethyst BioMat has ribs of amethyst going across internally, but it’s giving off far infrared rays along with negative ion therapy. Your cell phone, microwave, and TV, that’s giving off the positive ions that’s bad for your body. It has the super conductive heat from the amethyst and the tourmaline. It’s amazing how it just takes all the pain out of your body,” says Michelle. Visit Sol Himalayan Salt Cave and Spa to start off your new year right. Find them at 7013 Evans Town Center Blvd # 201, Evans, GA 30809. To reserve a session in the salt cave, visit their website at www. solcaveandspa.com or call 706-364-7958.

Enjoy Life to the Fullest LET THE FX SPINE AND PERFORMANCE CENTER HELP RELEASE YOU FROM CHRONIC PAIN

ARTICLE BY MICHELLE W. PARNELL PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANJEEV SINGHAL

“Chronic pain, by definition, is pain that lasts for more than three months,” explains Dr. DeAngelo. “It can be pain that irritates and annoys you every day and stops you from doing some activity that you enjoy.” Although many people seek out their own treatments for chronic pain, Dr. DeAngelo encourages those people to see an interventional pain physician sooner rather than later. “During my years of practice, it was very challenging for patients to go to physical therapy and then see gains in four to six weeks

when chronic pain takes sometimes months to rehabilitate,” says Dr. DeAngelo. “Which is why, when I developed this practice, I wanted to bring all the modalities of interventional pain treatments using ultrasound, fluoroscopy, radio frequency techniques, etc., and use them in combination with corrective exercise and neuromuscular therapy. I’m an interventional pain physician providing the advanced medical treatments for interventional pain with the focus of improving to your ability to function.” During the first visit at the FX Spine and Performance Center, patients undergo a comprehensive medical evaluation. Dr. DeAngelo will review any imaging (MRI, x-ray, scans) previously performed on the patient and do functional screenings when appropriate. Then, he explores and discusses treatment options based on the patient’s goals and desires. “I spend time educating patients about their pain,” he says. “Then I give my recommendations for treatment and tailor the plan to what they want to accomplish.” Dr. DeAngelo also addresses a common concern patients have about becoming addicted to pain medication during treatments. “For the last 15-20 years, I’ve been taking people off pain medications,” he says. “A lot of patients don’t want medicine – they want to fix their pain not mask it. I emphasize that we find the root cause

and educate them about what’s causing their pain, and then provide them with a modality that it is more amenable to their visions and goals.” Not only does Dr. DeAngelo have the professional experience and accreditation to work with chronic pain patients, he also has personal experience in these areas. “I broke my neck and had a perched facet. I was nearly paralyzed,” remembers Dr. DeAngelo. “I had to undergo a two level cervical fusion and I had chronic neck and arm pain for years. I also had a sciatica that I dealt with for over a year. My MRI was normal, and I went to physical therapy and tried medications. Nothing helped until I had my partner do a fluoroscopic guided procedure in order to administer steroid onto my nerve, which helped resolved my pain. So not only do I treat patients with pain, I have also experienced some of these things myself.” Dr. Nicholas DeAngelo is a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist by the American Board of Anesthesiology and a Board-Certified Interventional Pain Physician by the American Board of Anesthesiology as well as the American Board of Pain Medicine. FX Spine and Performance Center is located at 106 SRP Drive, Suite B in Evans. To schedule your consultation, visit www. fxspinecenter.com or call 706-842-6800.

Dive Into The Wellness World’s Hottest (Actually, Coldest) Addition

The Cold Plunge

Are you ready to take the plunge? It’s a question you may not have asked yourself before but will now. So what is “The Cold Plunge?” In short, it’s a brisk, three-minute immersion into a cold tub that triggers the body into a state of regulation, greatly improving levels of energy, mental and physical strength and blood circulation. The profound effects of The Plunge can impact your overall health, from reducing chronic pain and inflammation to boosting metabolism and focus and creating better sleep and mental clarity. Co-founded by two entrepreneurs who bonded over their love for health and business, Ryan Duey and Mike Garrett found a friendship and created a vision to rejuvenate people. Two to three minutes a day of plunging into 39-55 degrees of cold water stimulates the mind, body and soul and sets your day into optimistic motion. The goal with the cold water is to lower your core body temperature, and it takes time to do that. “Water cools your body at 25 times what cold air does. Cold water is the quickest activation to do it.”

Cold plunging can be done daily or multiple times a day. It’s all about getting people to explore what works for them. They may offer up recommendations, but ultimately it’s you building a relationship with your cold plunge. Many like the morning plunge, others enjoy nighttime. For some, it cools the body down resulting in better sleep. The Cold Plunge offers four different models, all the same size, all cold at 39-55 degrees, and one that can turn into a hot tub at 103 degrees. The heat can be great for clients in really cold environments. There is also an app to control the temperature via bluetooth. You can find The Cold Plunge at thecoldplunge.com and @the.coldplunge on Instagram.
