The holidays are here and as the spirit of the season is among us, we often try to replicate what made the season feel so magical to us in our youth. The traditions we set for our own families often mirror some of what we experienced as a child whether it is the smells, the sounds, the lights, the holiday activities or a combination of it all that reflect that best. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what our city has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier and that also supports our local businesses. We also wanted to share what our area has to offer this holiday season for entertainment and ways to give back. While this season can be beautiful for some, it can be painful and lonely for others, especially those who have recently lost a loved one. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other extending grace, empathy and love.

Hannah Meagher, Co-Chair Columbia Judicial Circuit Domestic Violence Task Force “The purpose of the Columbia Judicial Circuit Domestic Violence Task Force is to serve as a coordinated community response team,” explains task force co-chair Hannah Meagher. “Members of the task force include representatives from law enforcement, DFACS, the District Attorney’s office, the Board of Education, and several other groups. We work together to plan coordinated responses to domestic violence and collaborate on ways we can prevent domestic violence, neglect, and battery. We also provide education and community awareness concerning domestic violence in addition to promoting batterer accountability, in hopes to decrease the numbers of domestic violence happening in our area.”

Susan Swanson, Director Augusta Care Pregnancy Center Susan Swanson serves as the director and is truly the heart of the Augusta Care Pregnancy Center. She spends countless hours connecting pregnant women with resources to help them and their babies live healthy, safe lives. “We direct a lot of resources to helping homeless mothers and children and pregnant mothers,” shares Susan. “We offer parenting classes and a class on healthy relationships, because so many of our clients grew up in troubled homes and don’t know what a healthy relationship looks like.” ACPC also offers pregnancy testing, counseling, Bible study, and support for women in a variety of areas.

Rosanne Grubbs, Executive Director The Hale Foundation For over thirty years, the Hale Foundation has provided a safe and healthy place for men to recover from alcohol and drug addiction. The year-long residential program, which uses education, the 12-step program, and a network of support to assist men in recovery, is self-supporting through community contributions, donations, and program fees. “Many of the guys come to us with nothing left. They are broken and desperate,” explains Executive Director Rosanne Grubbs. “Here, the men form a sober network inside the Hale Foundation, as well 12-step meetings as in the community. So, when they are discharged after a year and go back out into the community, they feel comfortable because they see people they know.”

John Howard, Head of School Logos Classical Academy “I’m responsible for making sure LCA keeps our objective of glorifying God and educating children with an academically excellent, classical worldview at the forefront of all we do. We want our students to grow in knowledge, understanding, and wisdom,” says John Howard. When John and his wife were homeschooling their oldest son, they noticed he wasn’t being challenged. They enrolled him in a classical Christian school co-op. “His education took off. Instead of being extrinsically motivated, he became intrinsically motivated,” he shares. John then became interested in classical Christian education and has worked at various schools since. He has been the Head of School at Logos Classical Academy since they opened in the fall of 2020.

Thousands of lives have been impacted through Lynndale, Inc., since the community support service opened its doors in 1954. “Our mission is to provide people with disabilities and their families with valuable support through person-centered training and community resources, enabling them to determine their future,” shares Veronica Nipper, Executive Director of Lynndale, Inc. “We are a community support service governed by a Board of Directors, but also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and we are contracted with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.” Currently, Lynndale serves one hundred and eighty-four individuals. Lynndale offers a variety of programs for adults with disabilities ages eighteen and up, with no upper age limit. “We have a Community Integration Program, which consists of facility-based/individuals in the classrooms and volunteer groups,” explains Veronica. “With our Community Integration Program, training is tailored to the needs and desires to the person served, along with input from the family/caregivers in the areas of adult living skills, socialization skills, community integration, safety skills and mobility. Our volunteer groups go into the community and volunteer at different venues. Some have gone to churches to assist with folding bulletins; others have worked at Goodwill with folding, hanging up, and organizing clothes.” “Our Organizational Employment Program consists of pre-vocational workgroups and includes individuals who work in our cane and rush departments, our furniture refinishing department, the greenhouse and our tie-dye shop, which are on-site,” she adds. “Individuals are allowed to choose if they want to work, and if so, they can choose a particular group that they would like to be in.” CONTINUED >

For those who want to work out in the community, Lynndale offers an Individual Community Employment Program. “This program consists of our individuals working independently in the community,” explains Veronica. “We have an employment coach who oversees them twice a month and is willing to help if they need additional assistance learning a job or mastering a specific skill.” For families interested in pursuing Lynndale’s services for a loved one, there is a single point of entry through their Region 2 office. The process includes assessments to see if the individual is eligible for their services and qualifications for payment waivers offered through the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health. Additional private pay options are available to those individuals who do not qualify for payment waivers. Veronica, who has been serving at Lynndale since 1980, has many reasons why she enjoys her career. “It's a very rewarding field. I love being able to help each individual reach the level of their greatest potential,” says Veronica. “This is also where you find unconditional love. The individuals we serve with developmental disabilities are genuine and pure. You can come in and if you've had a bad day, they can look at you almost instantly and they want to give you a hug and just brighten your day.” Veronica’s attitude permeates the staff as well, which is currently made up of forty paid staff and five volunteers. “If you’re looking for an elite facility for your loved one to attend, check us out. We have some of the best staff that anyone could ask for. We’re equipped with Direct Service Professionals (DSP) who are the most compassionate, attentive, and caring workers. Our Admin staff are a refreshing bunch who are willing to go above and beyond with ensuring that their specialty is serving you and your loved one in the capacity in which they’ve been given.” Although Lynndale has paid staff members, volunteers are welcome and serve an important role. THE HAYRIDE THROUGH THE LIFE OF CHRIST The Hayride Through the Life of Christ has become a Christmas tradition for families throughout the CSRA. Not only do guests get to see the re-enactment of the true meaning of Christmas, there’s also live music, hot chocolate, and other fun activities for kids. “Sharon Baptist Church has been organizing the Hayride for twenty-one years. We started in a hayfield on Highway 221 before the Lord provided us with the Columbia County Fairgrounds,” says Pastor Andy Collins. In 2001, at the very first hayride, 511 people attended. The Sharon Baptist Church family was overjoyed at the amount of people they shared the story of Jesus with. Little did they know that this would become an annual Christmas event for families in the CSRA and they would share Jesus with tens of thousands of people. “God continued to provide for the Hayride, and it became more popular. The highest we’ve ever had was around 5,500 people,” says Pastor Andy. Before boarding on the hayride, you get to walk through the streets of Bethlehem and see what it was like for Mary and Joseph trying to find a place to stay. Once you board the trailer,
you will be shown eleven different scenes and watch the story of Jesus’s life be told. “We made a commitment the first year that if we showed the birth, life, and death of Christ, then we would show His resurrection because we want people to know that we serve a risen Savior. We also want people to know that it’s more than just a story; it’s a relationship, so we added the testimonial,” says Pastor Andy. At the end of the Hayride, you will hear from a member of Sharon Baptist Church as they share their personal testimony. “It takes everyone in our church family. Whether they are directing traffic, serving hot chocolate, preparing meals for the characters, working in the kids corner, playing live music, driving a tractor, or playing a character,” Pastor Andy shares. Every night over 100 members of Sharon Baptist Church can be found serving. “I get to spend that week with my church family for hours each night, and I believe the hayride is a gift that God gave us. As a church, we will eat together every night and I think there’s a fellowship and a purpose during the week of the play that’s hard to replicate,” he continues. CONTINUED >

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
