Barry Bartasavich Master Gunnery Sergeant (Retired) United States Marine Corps
Greenbrier High School ROTC As a Master Gunnery Sergeant, Barry and a fellow Marine risked their own safety by entering a live fire zone to rescue a family by bringing them out of the line of fire, allowing them to be treated for injuries, and providing protection from enemy forces. Now, he serves our country in another way by mentoring and instructing students as part of Greenbrier High School’s ROTC program. “He is an example of a man who is not a good educator simply because he knows the most facts about the subject he teaches,” says Barry’s daughter and co-worker Alex Wieczorek, “but because he knows the way to change a kid’s world is to give them what he can and support them with all he has.”
Kari Poss Columbia County Teen Court Columbia County Teen Court, a program offered through a partnership between Columbia County Juvenile Court the nonprofit organization Columbia County Community Connections, provides teenagers the opportunity to learn all aspects of the court system. “The kids actually handle real juvenile misdemeanor court cases,” explains the program’s co-founder Kari Poss. “They're trained by attorneys to serve as prosecutors, defense attorneys, and the jury. They handle everything from start to finish with these cases.” Teen Court, which is part of an international program, runs through volunteers and donations. Amy Breitmann Golden Harvest Food Bank Amy serves as President & CEO at Golden Harvest Food Bank, which distributes over 12 million meals a year across 25 counties in Georgia and South Carolina. She’s spearheading two construction projects that will help the Food Bank and its partner agencies get more food out into the communities they serve. “One is a volunteer and administration center, which will open late next spring and greatly increase the number of volunteers we can bring to our campus,” shares Amy. “The other is the demolition of our current food sorting facility which will be replaced with a Produce Rescue Center. Fall Recipes
P ERF EC T FOR T H A NK S GI V ING THIS HOMEMADE APPLE CIDER AND PUMPKIN PIE DIP ARE SURE TO BE A HIT AT THANKSGIVING PARTIES
H O ME M A DE A P P L E C ID E R INGREDIENTS • 10-12 medium apples, quartered • 2 oranges, quartered (if you would like your cider less tart, peel the oranges) • 4 cinnamon sticks • 1 tablespoon whole cloves • 16 cups of water • ½ cup of sweetener (brown sugar or maple syrup is recommended) • Optional extra seasonings, 1 teaspoon allspice, 1 whole nutmeg, and/or 1 inch fresh ginger
DIRECTIONS 1. Combine all the ingredients in a stock pot. 2. Heat the cider on high heat until it begins to simmer. Cover and reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for two hours or until the apples are soft. 3. Mash the apples and oranges to release more flavor and then cover and simmer for a few minutes. 4. Strain the apples, oranges, and spices and press them to release more flavor. 5. Add your sweetener of choice and stir. 6. Serve warm with cinnamon sticks.

PUMPKIN PIE DES SERT DIP INGREDIENTS • 1 (15 oz) can pumpkin puree • 1 (5 oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice • 1 (16 oz) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
DIRECTIONS 1. Mix together the pumpkin puree, instant vanilla pudding mix, and pumpkin pie spice in a bowl. 2. Fold in the whipped topping. 3. Chill in fridge until ready to serve. 4. Sprinkle with cinnamon and serve with graham crackers or gingersnap cookies.

As an eighteen-year-old, Sam Kitchens began working with E-Z-GO golf carts in the parts department. By the time he was twenty-two, Sam branched out and started his own business which focused on transporting, rebuilding, and servicing golf carts. In 2014, he and his wife, Keelie, ventured into the retail side of the business and opened the Cart Barn in Evans. Keelie, using her years of experience in real estate sales, focuses on the retail side of the business while Sam runs the shop. In addition to being an authorized E-Z-GO dealer, the Cart Barn offers customization of carts, refurbishing of old carts, and retail of new and used carts. “Our main business is golf cart sales, refurbishing and servicing carts, and part sales,” says Keelie. “On the retail side, we customize all those golf carts by picking out different accessories and color combinations. We can also refurbish somebody's golf cart that is older. For example, they might want a new body, new batteries, or any variety of things we can do.” Although many of their customers are neighborhood cruisers from golf cart communities, the Cart Barn offers carts for all types of uses. “We have a wide range of people that we service. I would say eighty to eighty-five percent of our business comes from families that just want a neighborhood cruiser,” explains Keelie. “We also have people that live in golf course communities, and we can build carts specifically for playing golf if they let
you use your own cart. We serve apartment complexes that use carts and for farmers, hunters, or people who want to use carts for work, we sell utility vehicles with the dump bed on back.” The Cart Barn offers free delivery with purchase and a pickup and delivery service for carts that need servicing. Servicing a cart can take anywhere from one day to a week depending on if the needed parts are in stock or have to be ordered. Sam and Keelie are grateful for the opportunity to work with one another and with an amazing team. “We talk about golf carts all the time. It never gets boring, especially when working with your spouse,” says Keelie. “We are especially thankful for our dedicated staff of salespeople, drivers and technicians that help keep things running smoothly and our loyal customer base that helps get our name out by word of mouth.” “We also love seeing kids get so excited when they come in with their mom and dad to get a golf cart,” adds Keelie. “That's probably the best part… seeing happy customers drive away with or getting delivered a new golf cart.” The Cart Barn is located at 5121 Washington Road in the Riverwood shopping center, just a few doors down from Publix. • Build a menu around the season. “In November, people crave turkey, sage stuffing and cranberry sauce,” Chef Kyle says. “Autumn dinners mean bigger-course meals with varied proteins, like turkey, duck and sirloin, hearty starches, and good fall produce, especially root vegetables such as butternut squash and pumpkin.” • Always greet guests with a beverage and appetizers. “Offer champagne for wine-lovers or a sparkling drink or signature cocktail. It’s all about serving guests to the highest caliber,” Kyle says. • Draw inspiration from the season’s changing colors, cooler temps and lower humidity to move back outdoors. “Think flannel blankets, wooden tables, fire pits, open grills, string lights and candles to create a really cool environment you haven’t been able to do all summer.” • “You can’t go wrong with fresh flowers,” Hannah says, “but keep bouquets low to not interfere with conversation flowing. For fall, I like richer, jewel-toned florals to mix and match and keep whimsical. I vary glass vases with burnished brass for warm fall vibes.” • An easy but thoughtful detail is to put a simple menu at each place setting, so guests know what to expect. “Add a pen, so guests can jot tasting notes, especially for wine pairings or multiple courses,” Hannah says. “Guests can share comments, then take the menu home as a sweet reminder of the event.” • Follow the French principle of mise en place or everything in place before your event. “This is actually our company’s name,” Kyle says. “It’s that important to us. Make sure the wines are all open, cocktails are pre-made, place settings are out, candles are lit and music is playing. When guests arrive, it gives that wow-factor and shows you intentionally made them feel special.” • To build confidence as a host, start small and practice. “Keep the menu and guest list small,” Kyle says. “Choose recipes you already have confidence in. If you make a great Beef Stroganoff, then go with that. People will love it!” • As fun as it is to dine outside, always have an indoors back-up plan. “We’ve had to bring it indoors before,” Hannah says. “It’s still fun.”
