“I still cry when I tell that story.” Tears and beautiful stories aren’t rare occurrences for Heidi Kalafut, owner of Heidi Marie Private Jeweler + Designer, and it’s not hard to see why. For Kalafut, every consultation begins like the opening page of a new chapterone that she treasures being part of. Some clients arrive carrying the past in a grandmother’s ring or a strand of pearls. Others are writing new beginnings with an engagement, wedding or growing family. Together, those chapters tell the story of a business built not simply on beautiful

jewelry but on preserving the people and memories that give life meaning. This is where Kalafut thrives, honored to play a part in some of life’s most meaningful chapters.

A SIXTH-GRADE DREAM

Kalafut has been an artist at heart for as long as she can remember. Drawn to beautiful things, she recalls a few defining moments that sparked her love of jewelry and jewelry design. “I remember standing in the checkout line with my dad in sixth grade and flipping through an ELLE magazine,” she says. “There was an ad for these gorgeous pieces of jewelry, and it said, ‘For pricing, please call.’ I remember asking my dad if this was something people did for a living, and he said yes.” “I guess it was the first time I realized people could design and sell jewelry as a career.” And the fascination didn’t end in the check out lane, another pivotal memory took place at Mall of America. “They had a glass bead store there and I was just so mesmerized by the endless colors and designs,” she recalls. Kalafut spent what felt like hours combing through displays in search of the perfect beads to add to her growing collection. “I think my sister and mom are still slightly traumatized by how much time I spent there,” she laughs.

THE UNEXPECTED JOURNEY

This passion for jewelry design stayed with Kalafut throughout high school and in college she earned a Bachelor of Arts in fine arts from the University of Iowa while also completing an entrepreneurial certificate through the Tippie College of Business. It was while at the University that she accepted a job at a jewelry store, a decision that would end up shaping her not only as a designer, but as a person and soon-to-be business owner. “I took a job at Hands Jewelers, this family-owned business that had been around for generations and sits in this iconic building in downtown Iowa City,” Kalafut remembers. “I was just this little college kid they welcomed in. Most of the people working there were family, so I really felt honored.” At Hands Jewelers, Kalafut flourished. Through observation, mentorship and increasing responsibility, she eventually became assistant manager in 2011, gaining firsthand experience in nearly every aspect of the business. “They even allowed me to design jewelry pieces, which was amazing,” she says. But like many good stories, hers included an unexpected detour. After six and a half years at the store, Kalafut left Hands Jewelers to begin a new chapter with her husband in Davenport, Iowa where they later welcomed their daughter Ava. It was after the move to Davenport that Kalafut stepped away from the jewelry industry and into financial services. Just as she began to believe her jewelry days were behind her, an unexpected opportunity arrived and quietly changed the course of her life.

BUILDING A BUSINESS ONE STORY AT A TIME

After moving to Omaha, Kalafut found herself becoming increasingly involved in the community, quickly forming friendships along the way. “I laugh because I wasn’t looking for this at all,” Kalafut says. “But all at once I had a co-worker, a neighbor and a girl from Junior League all tell me they were going to be getting engaged soon.” With years of experience still behind her, Kalafut casually mentioned that if their boyfriends wanted guidance as they shopped for engagement rings, she would be happy to help. “I remember sitting down with them and giving them the ins and outs, and all three of them were like, ‘Can’t I just buy it from you?’” The rest, as they say, is history. After selling three engagement rings from her kitchen table and guiding the couples through the design process, she realized she had found her way back to the career she loved. Heidi Marie Private Jeweler + Designer officially launched in 2020.

For Kalafut, however, the business has never simply been about selling jewelry. It’s about the people on the other side of the consultation table. “Just seeing my clients’ faces light up when they finally see what we’ve been talking about and designing for months sitting in a box in front of them,” she says. “There really is no greater feeling.” And these stories are not few and far between.

BUILT FOR GENERATIONS

When clients walk into Kalafut’s office, they arrive for many different reasons, but they all share a common thread— a desire to commemorate something beautiful and deeply meaningful in their lives. One story that stands out to Kalafut involves a mother whose daughter was preparing for marriage, wanting to give her daughter a truly meaningful gift, she brought in her late parents’ wedding rings. The bride had been especially close to her grandparents, and her mother hoped to create a piece that would carry their memory into her daughter’s wedding day. “We melted down their rings and created a beautiful vertical bar style pendant with the larger diamond at the top with the smaller diamonds scattered below to resemble the ‘stars from the heavens’ symbolizing her grandparents watching over her,” Kalafut recalls, her voice catching with emotion. “I always cry telling this story because she was crying, I was crying, and it was incredibly special for their family. It was such an honor for me to be part of it.” Kalafut emphasizes that creating custom jewelry doesn’t replace memories but creates opportunities for new ones as these pieces are worn for years to come. CELEBRATING EVERY CHAPTER

What Kalafut offers her clients goes far beyond beautiful jewelry. As a designer, she gives them the opportunity to create something that is uniquely their own. From meaningful engravings inside a band and carefully selected gemstones to custom settings and heirloom pieces that combine jewelry from multiple generations, each design tells a personal story and honors the people who matter most. Engagements, anniversaries and birthdays are among the most common occasions that inspire people to purchase jewelry for themselves or a loved one. Another increasingly popular tradition is the “push present,” a meaningful gift given to celebrate the birth of a child. Often featuring the birthstones of the new baby, these pieces serve as lasting reminders of one of life’s most significant milestones. “Your wife deserves a little sparkle,” Kalafut says with a smile. “I joke about it, but the truth is, you’re creating something that can become part of your family’s story. Mom gets to wear it now, keep it safe and enjoy it, but one day she can pass it down to her child. Whether it’s a 16th birthday, graduation or wedding day, she can say, ‘This is the piece of jewelry I received when you were born.’”

Those are the moments that remind Kalafut why she fell in love with jewelry in the first place. How Baltazar’s Stone one-stop shop has served Omaha and beyond for decades.

From Concept to Completion Oftentimes the best businesses are born from frustration and Baltazar Sauceda owner of Baltazar’s Stone is the first to agree. Located in Omaha, Sauceda explains that a lack of quality product and the pressing need to find it led him to take matters into his own hands and open his own business. “I decided to fabricate natural stone because I saw an opportunity.” Sauceda says. “There was lots of demand for it and it was so hard to get.” A long-time mason by trade, Sauceda harnessed the customer’s desire for engineered stone and skilled installers to form a company that has thrived for nearly three decades. Originally established in Des Moines, Iowa, Sauceda moved

The harmony of the operation and the team really matters. Sauceda emphasizes, “You have to set up a very complex system, which is the equipment and the building itself, but I also believe that part of the infrastructure is having the right personnel; they are an investment.”

BUILDING A BUSINESS DURING THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME

Like any dream, building it came with its share of challenges, many of them beyond Shelli and Paul’s control. Their biggest test came before they welcomed their first clients. In 2008, as a financial crisis swept across the United States, businesses were closing their doors and cutting staff. It was an uncertain time. While many were shutting down, Shelli and Paul were doing the opposite. They were opening the doors to Pure Hair Studio with money they had saved, fueled by determination and a belief in building something better. “We opened our doors at a time when people questioned why we were doing it,” Shelli says. “Apparently, it was unheard of. The news even came out to interview us because we were opening a business in 2008, when nobody else was. But we had an incredible team, and the relationships we built with previous clients carried over. Those clients became our first, and many are still with us today.” In 2023, Paul and Shelli learned that, after 15 years in the same location, their lease would not be renewed because another tenant was expanding its business. As it turned out, the change was a blessing in disguise, leading them to the welcoming Elkhorn community. What began as Shelli Harlow's childhood dream has grown into a thriving salon built on faith, perseverance and relationships that span generations.

That passion followed her into high school, where she had the opportunity to shadow at Capitol School of Cosmetology, an experience that confirmed she had found what she was meant to do. Still, the path to salon ownership wasn’t straight. Shelli enrolled at the University of Nebraska Omaha to study business, but something was missing. It was Paul who encouraged her to pursue the dream she had quietly carried for years. “I wasn’t really happy where I was working,” Shelli says. “ Paul told me, ‘If you want to go to school, now is the time.” That leap of faith set Shelli on the path that would eventually lead to Pure Hair Studio. Thirty years later, she and Paul are still living that dream together. For Shelli, that means caring for the people who walk through the salon doors every day. For Paul, that means cheering her on, supporting her vision and helping create a place where both clients and stylists feel valued.

Much of Pure Hair Studio’s success can be traced to the culture Shelli and her team have intentionally created, one built on relationships. “Relationships are the foundation of everything we do here,” Shelli says. “That starts with the stylists who work here. They are the reason behind our success. We’ve been fortunate to be represented by outstanding people. That’s why it’s important to us to support them through life’s challenges and celebrate during life’s joys.” That philosophy begins with the salon’s team. It’s woven into the way they lead. “We meet one-on-one with our stylists to check in, see how they’re doing and ask what they’re working toward personally,” Paul explains. “We are able to come alongside them, create plans and support them. That’s something we’re committed to doing here at Pure.” It’s that same spirit of care that extends to every client who walks through the salon’s doors. “You don’t know what someone is going through. Some people share, and some don’t,” Paul says. “But when you foster an atmosphere of care and understanding, you create a place where people feel safe, and sometimes safe enough to invite us into their lives.”

Being invited into people’s lives is something Shelli and Paul never take for granted. Over the years, they’ve collected countless stories of clients who became like family, trusting them with some of life’s most difficult moments. “We have been given the opportunity over the years to help many individuals in our Pure community,” Shelli recalls, her voice catching with emotion. “Moments like that stay with you.” “Those moments are incredibly precious to us because they didn’t have to invite us into their world, but they chose to,” Paul reflects. Time and again, the salon team has rallied around clients and members of the community facing grief, illness and hardship. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, a warm embrace or simply a safe place to be, they believe caring for people extends far beyond what happens in the salon chair. “Sometimes people just need someone to listen,” she says. “And we get the privilege of providing that every day.”

BACK TO LIFE How Lifetime Stone Restoration restores floors, showers and more for a fraction of the cost of replacement. Natural stone has been a cornerstone of architecture and design for centuries. From the limestone and granite pyramids of Egypt to the marble masterpieces of ancient Greece, its beauty and durability have stood the test of time. When properly installed and maintained, natural stone can last for generations. Like any surface, however, stone requires care. Daily wear, stains and etching can dull its appearance over time. That’s where Lifetime Stone Restoration comes in. Rather than replacing costly stone, owner Don Mlnarik restores marble, granite, limestone and other natural surfaces to their original beauty - saving homeowners the expense, mess and time of replacement.

COMMON STONE PROBLEMS

Mlnarik began restoring stone 18 years ago while working a corporate job. “I wanted to be in a service industry - helping people and making things look better,” he smiles. “I also wanted to do something better for the environment, like restoring, cleaning and repairing, rather than discarding in a landfill.” After completing formal stone-restoration training, Mlnarik spent five years preparing to leave his corporate job. During that time, he tiled half his garage with natural stones and practiced restoring them before he started accepting restoration jobs on nights and weekends. For the past 13 years, he has been restoring stone full-time. With the help of a part-time assistant, Mlnarik completes commercial and residential restoration projects, with 95 percent of his

work being residential. Although he enjoys repairing exterior travertine patios or bluestone pool surrounds, most of the work he completes is inside a home - fixing countertops, wall tile and flooring. Common problems Mlnarik tackles with counters are hard-water mineral deposits around fixtures and sinks, leading to dull stone and chipped granite. Even large chips can be repaired, he points out. “I just repaired a chip in a granite countertop,” he recalls. “It’s a quick fix: I rebuild the granite, repolish it, then blend it with the rest of the surface.” Hard-water mineral deposits on a countertop are fixable with Lifetime Stone Restoration as well. “It’s difficult for a homeowner to actually clean hard-water deposits off,” Mlnarik emphasizes. “I have specialized pads and a chemical that removes mineral deposits, then I repolish the stone, so it looks brand new.” Natural stone showers are beautiful but can be challenging to maintain. Lifetime Stone Restoration removes soap scum, hard water stains and mildew, while also re-caulking corners and resealing grout and stone to restore showers to like-new condition. Stone floors can become scratched, stained, worn or chipped over time. Mlnarik repairs damage, fills holes and restores surfaces to their original beauty. He can also change a stone’s finish, transforming polished surfaces to matte - or matte to polished to give existing stone an entirely new look. Mlnarik points out if you notice pitting or cracking in granite, moisture can make its way inside and begin to eat away at it,

“I wanted to do something

causing a sort of delamination. In addition, water may be seeping into drywall or cabinetry, leading to more problems and expense. Despite the damage, Mlnarik says natural stone can still be repaired. A typical countertop repair, shower restoration, stone floor polishing, cleaning and sealing takes Mlnarik on average one day or less to complete. “A new stone project will require tear-out and rebuilding. Even if a contractor says they can do it in a couple of days, you have the expense of not only the new stone and install, but the tear-out and mess,” Mlnarik states. “When we restore a counter or floor, you can use it the same day.”

NATURAL STONE’S LASTING BEAUTY

Older natural stone can become dull and dirty over time, but it’s nothing a professional restoration can’t fix, Mlnarik remarks. In the 1960s and ‘70s, it was common practice to pour urethane or shellac on natural stone to make it shine. These treatments can yellow the stone and are nearly impossible for homeowners to remove. “We can strip all that off and clean the floor, then diamond restore to whatever finish the homeowner wants; a finish is like choosing paint: satin, gloss or matte,” Mlnarik notes. A recent client of Lifetime Stone Restoration can attest to the effectiveness of professionally cleaning existing stone. “We purchased our 1960s home and the original marble entryway was an eyesore. We thought we’d have to tear it out, which would have been cumbersome and costly,” they recall. “We called Don and he polished the marble back to its original luster, filled in cracked areas in the grout and gave me a grout colorant to return the grout to its original color. We love our entryway and get many compliments on the beautiful marble.” Mlnarik’s preservation work around Omaha demonstrates just how long-lasting and beautiful natural stone can be. For example, he restored nine stories of terrazzo and marble flooring and stairs, including the lobby, of the Residence Inn by Marriott Omaha Downtown. Built in 1934 as the Omaha Federal Building, the historic building retains much of its Art Deco character. Mlnarik also restored the original 1930s lobby flooring in Hotel Deco, which is part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, hotels known for showcasing local charm through architecture and art.

As the season transitions into fall, it still features the warm, sunny days of summer but nights start to drop into the crisp temperatures. That leaves us in the limbo of wanting cool, refreshing drinks part of the time but also craving the deeper, spice-infused flavors of autumn. This recipe for apple cider sangria is the perfect blending of the seasons, leaving you feeling both refreshed and warmed through the deep flavors and interesting hints of spice. It’s a great drink to add to any dinner party, cocktail gathering, back deck after-hours get-together, or birthday bash. Here’s what you need to make the perfect mid-season cocktail to enhance whatever event you have planned.

1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 Honeycrisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped

DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
