Happy New Year!
P U B L I CAT I O N D I R E C TO R
We have finally made it to that time where we can make a fresh start. I was recently on a plane and decided to watch “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” which is inspired by Fred Rogers, and the person he was on and off the set of his television show. It got me thinking about who I want to be this year, and how I want to show up in life. Personally, my new year’s focus is going to be on love, health, and happiness. I know it’s not going to be a perfect journey, but I will be trying my best every day. January marks our annual Health & Wellness issue, and we have some fun stories to share. Kevin Rebman, owner of Return to Play Institute in Edina, offers soft tissue therapy to help people overcome challenges from injury, surgery, and pain so one can get back to moving and feeling their best. You may have heard about or seen photos of Cuyuna Cabin’s first mirror cabin located in Crosby, Minnesota. This unique little retreat boasts all the amenities of relaxation. So, if you are looking for a peaceful winter break or a reset in the woods, it might be something worth exploring. Running, biking, skiing and skating have traditionally been some go-to sports to help us get through our snowy season. Snowshoeing can also be a fun and different exercise to pursue, and Snowfoot snow shoes are bringing the joy of movement back to a cold, winter day. Feeling foggy or exhausted all of the time? Dr. Kyle Gillett offers some insight on understanding some common symptoms and how to tackle them in order to feel better every day. Since water is essential to our health, we have included some fun recipes on how to infuse new flavors for a delicious variety in your hydration routine. I hope you will find time in January and throughout this year to reset, restart, and focus on your own goals without getting frustrated or giving up. In the words of Fred Rogers, “Discovering the truth about ourselves is a lifetime’s work, but it’s worth the effort.” Wishing you all health & happiness in 2026,

After working in cybersecurity for many years and then as a part-time Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Kevin Rebman wanted to continue to help people, but in a different way. Today, he’s a board-certified therapist in massage and bodywork, and the founder and owner of Return to Play Institute. “I got started in this about 10 years ago,” he says. “I graduated from Northwestern Health Sciences University here in Bloomington and came out with a AAS degree in clinical massage. What I really wanted to do was make a destination for people who had issues with their muscles.”
Whether the pain is caused by trauma, surgery, cancer, sports, or even pregnancy, Kevin and his team of board-certified therapists work with clients using evidence-based clinical manual soft tissue therapy to help them get back to living their best lives. “We do oncology and perinatal massage, and help with postsurgical recovery with manual lymphatic drainage and scar tissue therapy. We're also doing things like neuromuscular therapy, or NMT. We're not here to teach stretches. We don't do chiropractic adjustments. We're not doing acupuncture or physical therapy. We focus on working on the soft tissues.” Instead of masking pain with medication, Kevin and his team help heal the tissue causing the pain, especially after surgery. “We actually love to be able to help clients out in a natural way,” he says. “Your body is healing all the time, and it's doing it passively behind the scenes, but if you put some activity into it, if you actually treat healing like an active process, you'll recover better and you'll have a better result at the end.” Every treatment is tailored to each client’s needs. He and his team spend a lot of time figuring out exactly what hurts where, then developing a plan to reduce or eliminate that pain. At each subsequent appointment, patients will be asked for a status update to determine whether the treatment is working or needs adjusting. The main goal by the end of the treatment period, which varies depending on the severity of the issue, is for clients to get back to doing what they love, and the feedback they receive from them is extremely positive. Something they hear all the time is “I wish I had known about you for my last surgery.”
“We're passionate about what we do,” says Kevin. “Unfortunately, in Minnesota, along with four other states in the USA, massage therapy is not a licensed healthcare profession. Many therapists out there receive training, if they get training at all, and then never take another class afterwards. That’s a problem because I don't want people to go to a place where they're not going to get the best quality care.” At Return to Play Institute, with locations in Edina and St. Paul, therapists are nationally board-certified and must complete continuing education courses each year to stay licensed. “We want to stay current in everything that's going on with healthcare,” he says. In order to reach and help even more people, Kevin wrote “Recover Smarter: The Ultimate Guide to Healing After Surgery.” Published in June of 2025, it's available from Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and on his author's website, MethodandMythMedia.com. “This book is all about what a person needs to know from a couple of weeks before surgery until about eight to 12 weeks after, with respect to how to heal better,” he says. “It covers things like the psychological effects of surgery. For example, some CONTINUED >

people get depressed. Others want to recover immediately, and when they can't, they get mad. It covers what to expect each week with scar tissue development and what scars should look like. It talks about compression and exercise. It includes nutrition. All of the things that people might want to know, that they might want to ask their doctors, but their doctors don’t seem to have time to answer those questions.” It’s filled, he says, with a lot of helpful common-sense information, although none of it is meant to replace a doctor's advice or give medical advice. “My favorite part of our business, whether it's me or one of our other therapists treating a client, is that we love to see people get better,” says Kevin. “That's what it's all about and what really makes our day.” To make an appointment and get help with your pain or discomfort, call or text 763-270-9330, or go to ReturnToPlayInstitute.com.

ARTICLE BY SARAH KNIEFF | PHOTOGRAPHY BY JASON EHRREICH, LEVI SNELL, SARAH BOSTROM
A Cabin That Disappears Into the Pines Minnesota’s first mirror cabin offers a secluded, design-forward escape in the heart of Cuyuna Country Jake and Meghan Zoesch never imagined they’d end up building one of Minnesota’s most memorable and talked-about cabin experiences. For years, their lives moved along familiar tracks – Meghan reporting and anchoring the news at KARE, CBS58, NBC15, and KAAL, and Jake working in Milwaukee in his family’s auto body shop with the expectation that he’d someday take it over. Yet something about weekend escapes up north tugged at both of them. Meghan grew up spending summers at Minnesota lakes, and when her parents bought a cabin in Crosby, she urged Jake to join her. She hoped he’d fall in love with the rituals she cherished: long evenings by the water, quiet mornings in the trees, that sense of “getting away” that wraps around you the moment you turn off the highway. Jake was excited. He even brought his mountain bike one weekend, tried the Cuyuna trails, and returned electrified. “Meg,” he said, “this is the mountain biking destination in Minnesota.” That moment reshaped everything. Soon the couple found themselves driving north every chance they could, working late into Friday evenings before heading to Crosby to pour sweat and imagination into a long-neglected miner’s house they had purchased. They gutted it, renovated

it room by room, and listed it on Airbnb with a mix of excitement and nerves. When the bookings began steadily arriving, they realized they had stumbled into something bigger than a side project. They had found the beginnings of their new future. What started with one house quickly grew into Cuyuna Cabin Collection, founded officially in 2022. Since then, they’ve founded five unique retreats across the region each intentionally designed, each immersed in nature. They built two cabins, Cuyler and Una, named after Cuyler Adams and his dog, Una, tied to the area’s iron mining history. Then came Little Rabbit Retreat, a tiny house tucked into two acres of woods, and Sunny Point, a six-bedroom lake property on Rabbit Lake. The collection became known for its thoughtful touches, quiet locations, and attentive hospitality. Yet the idea that would define their most ambitious project arrived in the most unexpected place: on their honeymoon. The newlyweds had chosen a road-trip honeymoon, drifting through states in a wide U-shaped loop. Along the way, they booked a stay in a mirrored cabin in Tennessee. Walking into that small, reflective structure was transformative. The space expanded emotionally, if not

physically. Surrounded by mirrored walls that dissolved into the forest, they felt as if they were still outside, wrapped in the landscape. Meghan remembers the moment vividly: “It took my breath away.” Jake looked around in awe and said what she was thinking: “We need one of these in Minnesota.” Back home, they didn’t waste time. They purchased a mirrored structure before they even found land – an exhilarating leap
of faith. The search for the right property turned into its own odyssey. Jake called 100 landowners, explaining their dream of creating a one-of-a-kind couples retreat – private, peaceful, immersive. Most people turned him down, attached to their land or skeptical of selling. But finally, someone said yes. When they walked the five-acre parcel – dense, quiet woods opening onto a secluded mine lake – they knew instantly it was the CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / E D I N A

place. Meghan could feel it. Jake could see it. They positioned the cabin as close to the shore as county rules allowed, preserving nearly every tree. They wanted the building to disappear into the scenery, its mirrored façade reflecting sky, pines, and water. It worked. The Mirror Cabin officially opened to guests in August 2025 and became Minnesota’s first mirror cabin getaway, a landmark within the state’s growing world of nature-driven retreats. By day, the exterior acts like camouflage – you can’t see inside. By night, floor-to-ceiling blinds provide complete privacy. Inside, the cabin is tailored for two: a queen bed, rainfall shower, indoor projector, air conditioning, high-speed WiFi, a kitchenette with multiple coffee options, and the feeling of being suspended between modern comfort and wilderness calm. Outside, the experience becomes something even more remarkable. The property includes a private beach with a clear kayak and two paddleboards, a lakeside lounge with Adirondack chairs and a hammock, a little free library tucked beneath the trees, and a custom mural by Minnesota artist Dani Liana – a whimsical backdrop that says “Love you to the lake and back.” There’s a hot tub, a sauna, an outdoor shower (seasonal), a spa bucket plunge

(also seasonal), and a stargazing net strewn just above the shoreline. A Solo Stove firepit sits ready with firewood and starters, encouraging long evenings under the stars. In winter, the Mirror Cabin transforms. Snow mutes the forest, turning every window into a living postcard. The lake freezes into a moonlit sheet, and steam billows off the hot tub. The sauna glows warm beside the wellness deck, offering a ritual that feels both Nordic and deeply Minnesotan. Guests snowshoe through the woods, winter mountain bike the Cuyuna trails just two miles away, or wander the Portage Lake Trail nearby. Others choose not to leave the cabin at all – opting instead for movies projected onto the wall, books read by firelight, coffee brewed slowly, mornings that stretch luxuriously long. The stories left behind in the guestbook are the ones that move Jake and Meghan most. A solo traveler healing after heartbreak wrote that she finally slept through the night. A mother who came alone to breathe said she felt, for the first time in
months, that no one needed anything from her. Couples come to reconnect. Friends come to rest. One guest wrote, “This might be the closest thing to heaven.” Those words, Meghan says, are the greatest reward of all. “We pour our hearts into these places,” she explains. Whether it’s Jake delivering a lighter within minutes after a guest reports theirs ran out, or Meghan curating the smallest details to make a stay seamless, their commitment runs deep. “When someone rebooks, or leaves feeling restored,” she says, “that’s the biggest compliment we can get.” Cuyuna Cabin Collection isn’t just a business for Jake and Meghan. It’s their life. Their passion. Their place in the world. And with the Mirror Cabin shimmering quietly between the trees, they’ve created something rare in Minnesota – a retreat where nature isn’t just the backdrop, but the entire experience. A place that feels like it’s waiting for you, just beyond the pines. To book your next stay, visit cuyunacabins.com. JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / E D I N A

SNOWFOOT’S JOY OF WINTER MOVEMENT

Snowfoot began, as many good inventions do, with a simple annoyance. In the Italian Alps, surrounded by steep climbs, icy ridgelines, and deep winter snow, Robert Behrens wanted to move the way he moved in every other season — freely, curiously, without feeling like he had strapped dinner plates to his feet. Traditional snowshoes allowed him to float on snow, sure, but they forced a wide, awkward gait, slowed him down, and limited what he could explore. So he started tinkering. What emerged from his garage was strange and promising: a compact deck, a binding that hugged the boot like it belonged there, and a set of crampons sharp enough to bite into the steep terrain right outside his door. Over time, that prototype evolved into Snowfoot, a winter mobility tool unlike anything else. When Robert’s sister and CFO of Snowfoot, Janet McCoy, talks about those early days, she laughs. “He’s a crazy genius,” she says. “Like a mad scientist.” She’s not exaggerating. Robert holds a global patent for Snowfoot’s deck — a complex, multi-layered structure that compresses a surprising amount of surface area into a small footprint. What looks simple from the outside is, according to Janet, “packed with intentional design you’d never notice but immediately feel.”
Snowfoot’s heart may be in the Alps, but its soul is rooted in Minneapolis, where Janet, her husband Keith, and their teammate John Frahm help carry the brand forward with a focus on the product's ability to make any winter activity fun. Together they form an unlikely but deeply enthusiastic crew determined to make winter less of a burden and more of a playground. John, the company’s marketing lead, likes to describe Snowfoot as the “anti snowshoe.” You step into them, he says, and something clicks — literally and figuratively. Your foot locks into a natural position, the deck supports your stride, and suddenly you’re moving the way you expect to move, not the way winter usually allows. “You start walking,” he says, “and you forget you’re wearing them. Your gait’s natural. You’re not wobbling or shuffling. It just feels right.” That sensation — that ease — is what makes people smile the first time they try them. It’s also why the Snowfoot team insists that this is less a piece of outdoor equipment and more an invitation. It’s permission to follow curiosity down a snowy trail, climb a hill you wouldn’t normally attempt, or stroll to the neighborhood brewery without worrying about ice patches. Users take them ice fishing. They wear them to shovel driveways. They track CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E. C O M / E D I N A

animals with them, scale trees, wander city parks, or simply walk the dog without fear of slipping. Keith, the company’s USA director of operations, sits somewhere between the daredevil energy of Robert and the cautious practicality of his wife, Janet. He likes taking Snowfoot into places he probably shouldn’t: the off-limits corners of Minnehaha Falls, the shaded steep trails that turn to ice by January. “You just feel secure,” he says. “You’ve got grip, you’ve got traction, you’ve got control.” It’s the kind of confidence that changes how you interact with winter — suddenly the season is not an obstacle but a landscape. “The whole world opens up to you, making colder months more fun.” Janet, ever honest about being the least naturally bold member of the group, sees Snowfoot a bit differently. For her, it’s an approachable, no-prep way to fight off cabin fever. “Anyone can
do it,” she says. “You’re just moving your body.” She likes that you don’t need special boots or extra gear; your sneakers or winter boots work just fine. And she loves to share with parents that kids grow with their Minis. “It’s the one winter product you don’t have to size up every year,” she says. The product’s quality is a point of family pride. Everything is sourced within 90 miles of Robert’s home in the Alps, and he still hand-assembles each pair. The team has yet to find someone capable of breaking one, despite the many enthusiastic attempts at outdoor shows. And in an era of disposable gear, Snowfoot feels solid, durable, almost heirloom-like. But the true magic appears in quieter moments. John talks about taking his three kids into the snowy backyard with their Minis, watching them pull their own sleds up a hill for the first time. Janet describes discovering winter in Minnesota — and liking it. Keith remembers seeing a group of older adults using Snowfoot simply to feel safe while shoveling their walkways. In these stories, a pattern emerges: Snowfoot doesn’t transform winter. It transforms our relationship to it. It makes people lighter on their feet, more playful, more willing to step outside and see what the cold months might offer. And maybe that’s the real invention — not the deck or the crampons or the binding, but the feeling that winter can move you, if you let it. To purchase a pair, visit snowfoot.com.

Thoughtful framing “Susan has done three big projects for me now. She is the third framer I’ve worked with over the last 15 years, and the only one I want going forward. She isn’t slapping work into a frame that you’ve Chipotle-lined picked out; Susan is adding to your art and supporting it with her own. Her work is thoughtful. Her color mixing is perfection. Her ideas are one of a kind.”

“ Dear Susan: What exactly is Financial Fitness? And how do I get myself in shape? “
Susan: Think of financial fitness like physical health—it isn’t about perfection, but stability and confidence. It means your money is working for you, not against you. To start getting in shape, simply
track your spending and build a small emergency fund. Next, visualize your finish line. What do you envision your retirement looking like?
Is it traveling the world or enjoying quiet mornings with family? Defining this vision is crucial, but you don’t have to do it alone. A Financial
Advisor acts as your personal trainer, helping bring those goals
into sharp focus and creating a plan to achieve them. The secret is starting now. The earlier you begin, the lighter the lift, ensuring a smoother, less stressful path to the retirement you deserve. Snap

U N D E R S TA N D I N G T H E “WHY” BEHIND WELLNESS ARTICLE BY ANGELA BROOCKERD PHOTOGRAPHY BY JANIE JONES AND PROVIDED
The New Frontier of Health AN INTERVIEW WITH DR. KYLE GILLETT
Why do so many people feel exhausted, foggy, or unwell, even when their medical tests insist everything is “fine”? Why are we prescribed quick fixes instead of being given real answers? Across modern medicine, a shift is happening. More patients are demanding real explanations, and more clinicians are rethinking what “healthcare” should actually mean. Leading that shift is Dr. Kyle Gillett, a dual board-certified physician in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine and an expert in metabolic, hormonal, and preventive health. Through his clinic, research, and The Gillett Health Podcast, he’s become a trusted voice for people seeking science-based, root-cause solutions rather than symptom-based band-aids. “Functional medicine is really ‘root cause medicine,’” Dr. Gillett often says. “It’s about asking why the problem exists and not just quieting the noise.” In this Q&A, Dr. Gillett breaks down the most common questions he hears from patients and offers simple, actionable guidance anyone can begin using today.
1. “WHY DO I FEEL AWFUL EVEN THOUGH MY LABS ARE ‘NORMAL’?”
Dr. Gillett: I like to say, “There is no such thing as ‘we’ve done everything.’” We can always dig deeper. Often, the labs ordered are the wrong type of assay, or important markers like ferritin or SHBG—which binds testosterone and estrogen—are completely missed. Beyond lab work, there are other factors: mitochondrial health, sleep quality, mental health, and even how sensitive your dopamine and serotonin receptors are. “Normal” labs do not always equal normal physiology for you.
2. “HOW DO I FIX MY ENERGY, BRAIN FOG, OR SLEEP WITHOUT 20 MEDICATIONS?”
Dr. Gillett: Start with a good, comprehensive lab panel to assess nutrients and hormones. Then build the foundation with sleep. My favorite tool is the 10/3/2/1/0 rule: • 10 hours before bed: No caffeine • 3 hours: Avoid large meals and alcohol • 2 hours: No vigorous exercise • 1 hour: No bright blue or white light • 0: No snoozing and no inconsistent sleep/wake times Aim for 7+ hours of high-quality sleep. When sleep improves, energy almost always follows. CONTINUED >

3. “IS MY GUT ACTUALLY CAUSING ALL THESE OTHER PROBLEMS?”
Dr. Gillett: Gut health influences most major health issues, but it’s rarely the only problem. Diet is my second pillar of health for a reason. Exercise, sleep, and stress reduction all improve gut function too. Even simple tools like self-hypnotherapy apps can reduce gut-related symptoms.
4. “WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW, TODAY, TO START FEELING BETTER?”
Dr. Gillett: Focus on the pillars of health: diet, exercise, sleep, stress, sunlight, social connection, and spiritual health. Treat them like habits and find ways to make them enjoyable or easy to start. Supplements and medications are supportive tools, not substitutes. Think of them like turbo chargers: they enhance a system that’s already functioning.
5. “WHAT DOES FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE ACTUALLY DO DIFFERENTLY?”
Dr. Gillett: True functional medicine is root-cause medicine, not cookie-cutter supplement regimens. Imagine an older adult with cognitive symptoms who receives multiple prescriptions from a conventional doctor. A functional approach might uncover something entirely different: B12 deficiency, hearing loss, and vision impairment. Fix those, and cognition often improves dramatically with no medications required.
6. “WHEN SHOULD SOMEONE TEST THEIR HORMONES, AND WHICH TESTS MATTER MOST?”
Dr. Gillett: Most adults should get a baseline hormone panel between ages 18 and 28, or earlier if they have symptoms like poor sleep, unexplained fatigue, or changes in heart rate. A

proper panel includes testosterone, estradiol, fasting insulin, CMP, lipids (including Lp(a)), A1C, morning cortisol, IGF-1, DHEA-S, vitamin D, and ferritin. These markers catch metabolic and hormonal issues long before symptoms become severe.
7. “WHAT LONG-TERM TESTS ACTUALLY HELP PREVENT DISEASE, NOT JUST DIAGNOSE IT?”
Dr. Gillett: Preventive care is evolving rapidly. For heart health, I recommend Coronary Artery CT Angiography (CCTA) because it detects soft plaque that calcium scores miss. Knowing this data early informs you what is needed to prevent a heart attack. Instead of asking your doctor “Do I need cholesterol medication?” ask “Do I have plaque in my arteries?”. Full-body MRIs can be useful too, but they often find harmless abnormalities, which can lead to unnecessary stress or testing. Always weigh the pros and cons with a clinician who understands your goals.
A FINAL WORD FROM DR. GILLETT
“The goal isn’t to tell people what to do, rather it’s to give them the information they need to decide what’s best for themselves.” By understanding the why behind your symptoms, labs, and lifestyle choices, you become the driver, not the passenger, of your health journey.
