Spring got me thinking about some things – roots in particular. Winter can be long and hard, gray and cold. But underneath all that ice and snow lies strong roots. Roots that we cannot see right away, but we know are there. Roots that are growing and will soon start blooming, eventually bringing beauty to everything we see. Roots are strength. Edina Lifestyle magazine is about roots in our community, and roots that connect us to neighbors, family and friends. Lots of care goes into planning the “roots” or content we bring to you each month, which leads to stories that will bloom for readership and small business. This month, that includes checking out some local community roots. roots. Or, perhaps for some, that means uprooting a bit, and planting new seeds in order to explore outside a comfort zone and try something new. We’ve included a list of local experiences for you to check out. Whether it’s iFLY sky diving, hot air balloon rides, zip lining, or helicopter tours across our beautiful state, there are some unique experiences to be enjoyed. Our team wanted to share a bit about a brand-new program for small businesses which was started right here in Edina, and is open to applicants locally and beyond. Annette Wildenaur, discusses the first Innovation Lab, a group of ten business owners who completed a journey of education, support and guidance on how to strengthen and scale their opportunities. April means tax time. Although it’s not everyone’s favorite, it can be a chance to refresh and revamp plans for retirement. EDINA INNOVATION LAB CELEBRATES FIRST GRADUATING CLASS

Edina Innovation Lab – a new program to support local entrepreneurs and businesses – celebrated its first graduating class this past February, showcasing success and growth, according to Chief Innovation Officer Annette Wildenauer. “Our cohort included nine businesses and 10 individuals,” she explains. “Every one of them made significant progress and learned something. Their business is the case study so everything that we talk about is related back to them. This went really well, and it exceeded my expectations.” The lab began as a nonprofit program during July of 2022 in response to Edina’s ever growing need to help small business owners. The city and its chamber of commerce are the supporting founders who hired Annette to create it. “While I was constructing Innovation Lab, I realized that there isn’t a lot of help out there for second-stage businesses, those who have been running for three years and proven a profit,” she says. “I wanted to focus my efforts on this untapped market. These businesses deserve a place to go and make connections.”

Annette is an experienced entrepreneur and comes with years of teaching experience. The lab’s primary option is called BIG, Business Innovating and Growing. BIG is a six-month program with courses in business fundamentals, including finance, marketing, relationship management, sales, human-centered design, legal, accounting, media marketing strategies, employment recruitment and human resources. “BIG is really for those businesses that feel stuck or just don’t know what to do to take them to the next level,” Annette says. “It’s a way to talk to other people that are in the same place you are. Talking to other actual entrepreneurs is so different than getting advice from a spouse or friend.” Each BIG cohort meets twice a month for two hours and can have a maximum of 10 participants. “Every group has different course work based on what the participants need help with,” Annette says. “I tailor the classes to them and develop the curriculum over time as the sessions go on.” She continues, “Every time we meet may look different, with interesting topics of discussion and business speakers, but we will always do a learning activity with something that they can think through to apply to their own business.” The first group included: • Beth Grant, Beth Grant Interiors, from Edina • Nadine Gross, Vuefinder, from Minneapolis • Umut Kaplan, Coccinella, from Edina • Darren Kelley, Devine Shine Home Cleaning, from Minneapolis • Rachel Michael, Rachel Michael Styling, from Maple Grove

In each BIG group we do, we never have competing businesses. That wouldn’t make for a productive environment.” Umut Kaplan of Coccinella said his BIG experience has opened his mind to all kinds of opportunities, including how to introduce his products to new clients, develop an effective online marketing strategy and grow his team to serve new customers. Umut was born and raised in Turkey, and came to the Twin Cities as a college student, quickly falling in love with his new home. Today, he runs Coccinella, a retail store that sells rare olive oils from his family’s olive grove and beautiful cotton products imported from Turkey. Another satisfied BIG participant is Beth Grant of Beth Grant Interiors. She says, “Participating in BIG has been life changing. It’s helped [me] think strategically about all aspects of [my] business, [including] pricing, marketing and managing day-to-day operations, all while finding ways to keep the passion alive that motivated [me] to start my business in the first place.” Beth is an interior designer who creates environments tailored to the personalities of her residential and commercial clients. Check out bethgrant interiors.com to see her latest projects. Edina Innovation Lab holds all meetings at The E, where they are currently building out a lab and office space. The E is located at 7301 Metro Blvd., Edina. “We plan to move in by June 30 and are super excited about it,” Annette says. “Since we are a nonprofit organization, we thrive on grants, loans and donations. The new office space is all possible because of a loan agreement approved by the Edina Housing and Redevelopment Authority.”

At this new location, Annette plans to run more cohorts simultaneously and other shorter courses. “More space allows for more courses,” she explains. “We are developing mini courses that will be based on purpose, leadership and other related business topics. In the purpose course, business owners will build a purpose statement, implement a plan and find ways to engage others in their journey. The leadership program will be run by a curated leadership council that believes in sharing their skills to better meet the needs of the business community. “I’m very excited to see where Edina Innovation Lab will be in one year as well as where we grow to serve in the next,” Annette says. “We are ever changing and I’m [currently] instructing my second cohort right now. MYTH 1: I’M TOO YOUNG TO WORRY ABOUT SAVING FOR RETIREMENT. When you’re young, time is on your side. Although retirement may be decades away, the fact is that the earlier you start saving and investing towards your retirement, the less strain it will have on your cash flow/budget and the easier it will be to hit your financial goals. The sooner you start saving, the less you actually need to contribute thanks to compound interest. Many have probably heard of some version of the timeless tale of two investors – one who started early and one who waited “just a few years.” For example, two investors put away $5,000 each year, invest in the same investments earning 6% annually,

and retire at age 67. The only difference is investor one started at age 22 and investor two started at age 32. Investor one will end up with almost twice as much money, or about $500,000 more, walking into retirement!

MYTH 2: SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS WILL COVER WHAT I NEED. While Social Security will provide you with retirement income and may cover your living expenses, it was never meant to be your sole source of income as a retiree. Start by reviewing how much your lifestyle currently costs and whether you anticipate that to change during retirement or not. Grab a copy of your most recent Social Security Statement (sign up for online access atssa.gov/myaccount) and review your estimated personal retirement benefits. If your monthly expenses are higher than your Social Security benefit, you’ll need to bring income in from other sources to fill the gap. Additional income sources may be received from a pension plan, retirement accounts, side jobs, annuities or other investment vehicles, depending on your situation.

MYTH 3: I’LL JUST KEEP MY MONEY IN THE BANK. I DON’T NEED TO INVEST IT.

While it is recommended to keep three to six months of cash in a checking or savings account that is readily available for emergencies, funds sitting in cash are actually going backwards when we look at money as purchasing power and take into account inflation vs. what the bank is paying for interest. For example, if you put $100 in the bank and over the course of the year inflation was 2.2% and the bank paid you .2%, the purchasing power of your same $100 is now only $98. This effect is magnified with the current inflationary environment, and only gets worse over time. Individuals need to invest their money not only to maintain purchasing power over time, but to increase it as well. When it comes to automobile safety, while newer technology like back-up cameras and lane assist are helpful, tires are probably the most important feature and one drivers may not give a lot of thought. But, having the right tires for your car and for the season can make a huge difference. Tires may seem pretty simple and straightforward, however, there are many components to take into account.

This is where professionals can steer you in the right direction. “There is no one on our sales staff that has under five years of experience,” says Chris Mortensen, co-owner of Samaritan Tire Pros along with his son Mike. “I’ve been in this industry 40 years and Mike’s been doing this for 15, so you’re never going to be talking to someone about tires that doesn’t have experience.”

They also have ASC (Automotive Service Excellence) certified technicians performing all of the automobile work. “We don’t have a lot of turnover - several guys that have been with us for well over 10 years, so it’s an experienced crew of people,” he says. to balance tires,” says Chris. “And, all of the alignment equipment is on the newer side. We continually update all of our equipment.” When Chris purchased the business in 2003, he had already been with Goodyear for 25 years, working his way up from installing tires to serving as regional manager. Mike came on board with Samaritan when he was only 16. “It was my first job,” he says. “Then, after going to school in Mankato for business management, I came back here and went into sales.” He enjoys working alongside his father and helping customers. “That’s the most fulfilling part about it. There’s no pressure to hit a sales quota for a particular brand, so we can recommend whatever tires we think are right for people.” Originally a Goodyear dealer, Samaritan became a multi-branded dealer of all major brands of tires about 15 years ago. “It comes down to what meets customers’ needs and this way they have a lot of choices,” says Chris. “Inventory’s really not an issue because we have three large distributors that are local.” He adds, “I was fortunate when I bought the company that it had a big customer base and we’ve held on to customers. We have a lot of repeat business. Because Samaritan’s been around for so long in Edina and Minnetonka, there are generations of people who’ve come in. Their mom came here, their dad came here, and now they’re older and their kids come here. It’s a nice situation because people are personally familiar with us and it’s become more like a personal service than a business. We’re a true family business and we get to know our customers really well.” A new service implemented this year is its Mobile Tire Service. “We can come to your home or office and install new tires that were either purchased from us or tires that you already have,” says Chris. “The whole idea is to make it more convenient for our customers. So, if you’re at work all day and can’t get away to get tires for your car, we can just go to your home or office and install them.”

Customers can schedule a day and time on its website or by phone, and the service is available in a 20 miles radius from both locations. “We can do pretty much everything with the mobile truck as far as tires are concerned on passenger vehicles and light trucks. We also service fleets as well, like Amazon trucks.” At Samaritan, they do everything tire and wheel related, including custom wheels, wheel alignments, brakes, axle repair, and steering and front end suspension work. They can also store tires so when people switch out their winter tires for warm weather tires, they have a place to keep them. Most people don’t even realize that different tires should be used for different seasons. “Winter tires have a softer rubber compound and more grooves that give you a better biting edge,” says Mike. “It’s kind of night and day when it comes to winter tires versus all-season or strictly

summer tires. There’s no additional charge for this service. “We also don’t charge extra to fill tires with nitrogen,” says Chris. “The advantage of using nitrogen is it’s dry, so the pressure of the tire and wheel assembly stay more stable over time. There’s still some fluctuation in the colder weather, but it’s not as drastic. The tires will maintain pressure better and therefore last longer.” While they recommend making appointments ahead of time for tire installations and other services, they gladly welcome customers who just drive in that day.
