Happy Holidays!

December 2023 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR IAL COOR DINATOR

Sarah Knieff | sarah.knieff@citylifestyle.com

I can’t believe it is already year end. Even though it flew up fast, I hope December 2023 finds you looking back at a great year filled with fond memories. The Edina Lifestyle team collaborated on many projects, shared great stories, dipped back into hosting events, and experienced the community with open eyes, ears and hearts. For December, we wanted to focus a bit on giving back. Each year, our magazines are able to nominate families in need of extra assistance. Although City Lifestyle cannot help everyone who needs it, this campaign continues to grow annually and make small strides in communities across the nation. If you feel there are people in need in our community, I encourage you to scan the QR code to nominate. Locally, we connected with Crown Bank and learned about their support of Every Meal. Shortly after we decided to coordinate this article, I found myself at a traffic light behind an Every Meal truck. It was almost a sign that some things are meant to be. On a fun note, Smack Shack has introduced live music to their weekend line-up. It’s a short drive or Uber ride down France Avenue to see some great local musicians and enjoy a fabulous meal. If you’re looking to renovate a bathroom or kitchen in the new year, the KOHLER Signature Store by First Supply has just announced its largest design collaboration in history. Shea McGee from the Netflix design show “Dream Home Makeover” has designed a beautiful and affordable line of products. Finally, we hear from the experts at Standard Heating & Air Conditioning on some of the frequently asked questions this time of year. Fingers crossed that the rumors are true and this Minnesota winter will be a milder one!

Paul Moen

As a community bank, Crown Bank’s mission is to serve the people in the communities in which its branches are located. One way it accomplishes this goal is by offering quality, personalized financial services. Another way it does this at its Edina and Minneapolis locations is by its involvement with Every Meal. After learning about this nonprofit when it was featured on KARE 11 last December, CFO Paul Moen felt a strong connection. “They were visiting with Rob Williams, the founder of Every Meal, and they were celebrating their 10 millionth meal delivered,” he says. “It just so happened to be taking place at Centennial Elementary School in Richfield where my daughter [Mackenzie Moen-VonAhnen] teaches third grade. It became personal for me

because I realized some of those kids are probably in her classroom.” The very next day, Paul introduced the idea of supporting Every Meal to the bank’s leadership team, and he says there was no hesitation at all. “Edina is probably considered above middle class, but there is hunger here,” he says. “We always think it’s somewhere else.” According to Every Meal, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, more than 300,000 children in Minnesota live with food insecurity. Its mission is to change that, and is doing this by focusing on filling the food gaps children face on weekends, extended breaks, and summer when they’re not able to access school meal programs. Crown Bank partnered with Every Meal last December and has already made a

significant impact. “I sat down with Rob and asked him how much it would cost to sponsor the meals at Centennial Elementary School from January through December of 2023. He told me it would be $11,000, so last December, we presented them with a check for $11,000.” This fall, the bank donated another $25,000 towards Every Meal’s $1,000,000 Challenge Capital Campaign, and plans to donate another $11,000 for the upcoming year. Giving money is not the only way Crown Bank is helping. The bank’s employees are just as enthusiastic as Paul about Every Meal. “The easy part, in my opinion, is giving money and a lot of businesses do that, which is great, but I wasn’t going to allow us to stop there,” he says. “Many nonprofits need more volunteers and I'm so proud of our staff for their willingness to help out.”

“THERE ARE CHILDREN IN OUR COMMUNITY WHO WOULDN’T HAVE FOOD ON THE WEEKENDS IF WE AND EVERY MEAL WEREN’T THERE TO PROVIDE IT TO THEM. IT’S UNBELIEVABLE.”

Over half a dozen employees take part every other week in Every Meal’s packing events. “Our employees drive up to Roseville where their offices are and help pack the bags that get delivered to the children,” says Paul. “And, every other Friday we actually deliver those bags to the kids in an elementary school in Bloomington. We put them right into youngsters’ backpacks.” As soon as his employees return, they always ask when they can go again. Thus far over 95% of the bank’s staff has participated in either the packing event and/or stuffing the backpacks on multiple occasions. Right from the beginning his staff was all in. “We're talking about kids here and we all have kids in our lives, whether it's our own children, nieces and nephews or grandchildren, and they're the most vulnerable population sector. I think that's why it certainly spoke to me, and also to our staff.” Paul states that he and the bank’s employees’ commitment is stronger than ever. “When you go to the schools and see the evidence that there are actual students that get those bags, then it's real, and that's when I get emotional. There are children in our community who wouldn’t have food on the weekends if we and Every Meal weren't there to provide it to them. It’s unbelievable.” Crown Bank, which was established in 2000, is primarily a business bank. “This means we deal primarily with small business entrepreneurs, and this is another reason that Every Meal is a

good fit with Crown Bank's core value of giving back to the communities that we serve. Rob is an entrepreneur who started this organization in 2010. Today, he is serving 75% of the schools in Minnesota that have contacted him.” Adds Paul, “We built our bank with entrepreneurs – businessmen and women who want to start up a company and we're here for them.” A lot of customers have been with the bank since it opened, as have many of its staff members. “We don't have a lot of turnover and I think a big advantage of Crown Bank versus other banks, especially bigger banks, is that when you walk in the door, you're going to see that same person you did if you were a customer for the first time 10 years ago. We are huge on relationships and we're going to take care of those folks who are willing to put their money in our bank and/or take out a loan with us.” Paul’s goal this past year has been to make a difference and he believes that Crown Bank has done that by becoming involved with Every Meal. “There are so many organizations for a community bank like ours to get involved with, but the passion has to be there. It's no use getting involved in the community if it isn't something you're passionate about.” To learn more about Crown Bank and Every Meal, go to Crown-Bank.com and EveryMeal. org. For those interested in banking with Crown, call 952-285-5800 or visit their Edina office located at 6600 France Ave S #125 for more information.

ALL THAT JAZZ EXPERIENCE GREAT SEAFOOD, COCKTAILS AND WORLD-CLASS MUSIC ALL IN ONE PLACE

While the Smack Shack has always been known for its casual coastal cuisine, great cocktails and tap beers, its Bloomington location is now also a destination for world-class live music. Performances take place in what it calls its Funky Little Shack. “The Funky Little Shack was originally designed as a small lounge area and has now evolved into our live music presentation area,” says Geoffrey Trelstad, beverage director and manager of the live music program. With its distressed tin ceiling, octopus-style light fixture, garage door, eclectic street art, neon sign, old-school stereo console and baby grand piano, it certainly is funky, but also fun and a great place to showcase musicians.

“We decided to offer music because we wanted to grow some culture, and when you offer quality culture like jazz music or jazz-informed music, I think that can kind of grow itself organically,” he says. “Offering that to our guests in this part of the Twin Cities, where there’s not a whole lot of live music, is great.” Since the music program’s debut in mid-September, Smack Shack has hosted some renowned and talented musicians in its Funky Shack. “We’ve had Katia Cardenas, who is a pretty well-known local vocalist and jazz-centric who also performs all genres of music,” says Geoffrey. “We’ve also had Billy Peterson, a Grammy Hall of Fame bass player, and most notably as the bass player on Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks album, as well his nephew, Jason Peterson Delaire, who was a member of the group of musicians in Prince’s various different bands.” Jason is also Michael Bolton's keyboard and saxophone player. Another musician, Zacc Harris, has played in the Shack too. “He’s probably one of the top jazz guitarists in the region, and he's also been a part of a couple of big jazz super groups – one called Atlantis Quartet and the other called the Beautiful Sunshine.” Omar Abdulkarim has taken the stage as well. “He's a great trumpet player and a legacy player,” he says. “We've also had his 88-year-old father, Ahmed, playing trumpet here as well.” CONTINUED >

Ray Barnard Band

In October, the Smack Shack also started hosting the Ray Barnard band. “Ray is like a jazz-informed R&B songwriter and a piano player,” says Geoffrey. “You could call him a blue-eyed soul with a kind of Al Green vibe. He has a lot of original, well-constructed songs which are really chill and very tuneful. He also has a really great rotating cast of some of the best R&B jazz-informed players behind him.” For Geoffrey, booking these musicians takes him back to his roots. “I’ve been a hospitality guy for the better part of 30 years, and I've been involved with booking jazz and various genres of music for years.” Performances take place on Friday and Saturday nights and the feedback from customers has been very positive.

22

M UST SE E | A RTS + CU LTURE

“It's entertainment with these world-class musicians and it’s really exciting for us because I think this community can really appreciate the level of art and culture that's being offered.” There's also no cover charge to come in and enjoy these amazing performances. Having this type of entertainment is just another great reason to hang out at the Smack Shack. “We're known for seafood and for flying in fresh oysters and lobsters,” says general manager Julianna Nelson. “While it's not fine dining, you get the same quality of food that you would get if you were at a fine dining restaurant. So, that same high quality is there, but the vibe is a little more casual and fun, and the music just enhances that.” Along with the delicious and fresh food, there is a great selection of beverages.

“We have an eclectic mix of cocktails including a lot of classics like the Hurricane, and we do all sorts of cool innovative things with tap cocktails, which are very unique and have a nice organic base mixer,” says Geoffrey. “There’s also a spicy margarita named the Cheech with smoked paprika salt, which is delicious and spicy, and a Passion Fruit Margarita. We have a lovely wine list from entry-level to expert level too.” The best food, drinks and great entertainment equals happy customers. The musical lineup is updated every few weeks so customers can see who’s playing and make plans for a great night out. For more, go to www.Smack-Shack.com/classes/.

SHOULD I GET MAINTENANCE FOR MY NEW SYSTEM? Manufacturers recommend annual maintenance even if your system is under warranty. Parts are typically covered under warranty. However, regular maintenance often identifies issues early on. If a maintenance issue leads to a more significant problem not covered under warranty, such as a clogged condensate trap causing component failure, you may not receive warranty support as proper maintenance could have prevented it. Initiating maintenance early can extend your system's lifespan. Think of it like getting an oil change for your car. A small investment in our Smart Club can protect your system and save you significant costs.

I HAVE A WEIRD SMELL COMING FROM MY FURNACE WHEN I FIRST TURN IT ON FOR THE WINTER. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

FURNACE WINTERIZING TIPS WITH NATE STOLL FROM STANDARD HEATING

If you notice unusual smells or sounds when starting your system in the fall, it's often due to burning off dust, dander, and debris. While this is normal initially, persistent issues require attention. Unusual motor noises can indicate impending failure. Perform a pre-season check by running your system, even in warm weather, to identify and address problems before winter sets in.

WHAT ABOUT MAINTENANCE ON MY HUMIDIFIER? For homes with humidifiers, switch the damper to winter mode to allow proper airflow. Test your humidifier while the furnace is running, using the "test" mode to check the water panel. Replace the water panel regularly; our technicians carry replacements on their trucks, and we also can ship them directly to you.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY FILTER? A good rule of thumb is that filters should be replaced or checked based on their size – roughly every inch corresponds to how often they need changing or checked on. For one-inch filters, check or replace them monthly, and for four-inch filters, consider a replacement every four months, but the presence of pets, number of people in the home, and cooking frequency can all contribute to the need to check or replace filters sooner.

SHOULD I LEAVE MY FAN ON ALL THE TIME, OR HAVE IT SWITCHED TO AUTO? Leaving the fan on continuously can help distribute heat more evenly, especially in challenging spots that are not effectively heated or cooled. It also helps filter out dust and debris from the air, using one of the lowest fan speeds available. Need to schedule a maintenance appointment? Call Standard Heating & Air Conditioning at 612-887-2148 or visit their website standardheating.com.

Giving Campaign

2023 30

G IV IN G BAC K | L IFE + CULTURE

“

This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.”

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
