We’re full on into summer now and the team at Edina Lifestyle hopes you are having a great one! Edina is deeply rooted in history and tradition, and we were excited to learn a bit more about what goes into putting the annual 4th of July parade together. We did a Q & A with Dick Crockett and Patty Dronen of the Edina Community Foundation in order to share what to expect this year. After the last few years, we have a lot to look forward to. In last month’s issue, we announced our exciting new partnership with Andrew Vick of Andrew Vick Photography. WALLEYE WITH LEMONY GARLIC BASIL ZOODLES AND GRAPE TOMATOES ingredients:

You will want around 2 lbs of zoodles for this recipe which is why you can procure a little more when buying your zucchini (given that you will cut off ends and not use it all when cutting zoodles). Using your zucchini noodle maker, prepare zoodles. Alternatively, procure 1.5-2 pounds pre-cut zucchini noodles.

1. Prepare all of your other ingredients. 2. Heat a large skillet to medium heat and add 2 tablespoons oil to the pan. Season the walleye filets generously with salt and pepper. Place the fish in the pan. Cover the pan with a lid. Cook the fish 4 to 5 minutes per side or until the fish reaches a temperature of 145 degrees. Remove from pan and set aside. 3. Turn skillet up to high and sauté 4 tablespoons oil, garlic, and hot red pepper flakes (optional) for about 30-45 seconds until golden but not brown or burnt. Add zoodles to pan and sauté for 5-7 minutes tossing and turning zoodles throughout. Add lemon juice and lemon zest halfway through cooking. 4. Have a colander/strainer ready with a bowl underneath and dump the zoodles into the colander reserving the liquid. Let it drain until no more liquid is dripping and then add this liquid back to the pan. Reduce at high heat for 3 minutes or until liquid starts to bubble and look syrupy. 5. Place zoodles into a large serving dish. Drizzle the lemony syrup over top and top with tomatoes, fish, and basil chiffonade. Sprinkle with grated parmesan. Allow individuals to season with more salt/ pepper and grated parmesan if desired.

A PHOTOGRAPHER WITH A PASSION FOR PICTURES AND PEOPLE

CAPTURING PRECIOUS MOMENTS IN TIME As a child growing up in Edina, Andrew Vick was always the kid with the camera. “My earliest subject matters were stringers of fish and beautiful golf courses,” he says. Although he loved taking pictures, Andrew initially thought of photography as a hobby - something to do on the side. “I graduated high school in ’96 and originally got accepted at Madison for landscape design and golf course architecture,” he says. “A couple of weeks before classes started, I pulled out and took a chance on getting into a small school in San Diego where I could study general business and photography.” While there, he spent time taking photos of surfers catching waves off the cliffs of his campus and of friends getting into modeling. But, it was at a friend’s wedding that he realized he could possibly make a living out of this side-gig he loved so much. “They were in my photo class and asked if I could bring my camera with me to the wedding and then take a few photos,” says Andrew. “When they loved the photos I took more than the ones the paid photographer took, they challenged me to do something with that.”

After graduation, he came back to his hometown. “My whole family’s invested in this community. My mom, Penny, taught in Edina and my dad, David, helped run the schools. I even taught for a year. Before doing photography full-time, I also worked for the Edina Chamber of Commerce as membership director.” Eventually, he signed up to submit work for the Edina Art Fair. “It was on a bit of a whim, and I had to gather material to showcase. I was going to be traveling the world with Young Life [an evangelical Christian organization], helping start a camp for youth in Sweden and then traveling and backpacking around Norway and Sweden. And I thought, if I get enough good stuff, I should have enough for the art fair.” He certainly did, and ended up selling 53 prints! He was on his way to his lifelong career. Being a photographer, he says, is more than just knowing the equipment and how to frame a shot. It also involves some psychology. “Everyone tells me they hate being photographed, so how do you disarm and connect with them? I’ll start a conversation at a table with the camera just clicking away on my lap

so they can get comfortable with the sound. Eventually, I’ll ask questions and bring the camera up and take a couple of frames and put it back down on my lap. My goal is for the camera to eventually disappear and let it just be a conversation between us. That’s usually where people’s best comes out.” He adds. “It always brings me to tears when people feel seen and beautiful. I don’t think there’s a better calling in the world.” In addition to photography, his other passion is helping others. “One of the places I’ve been really drawn to is the country of Guatemala,” he says. “On one hand, they have nothing, but on the other, they have everything. Life is simple, and resources are shared.” He and wife, Janelle, originally started working with World Visions International, a humanitarian aid organization, and now, by donating a portion of revenue for each wedding, have created a program of giving back. They work with children, families, and communities to feed and educate children.

“We get to be part of the selection process and focus specifically on young women,” he says. “If a family can only educate one kid, they’ll usually choose the male, but the weavings and tapestries of Guatemala are created from the creative genius of the women and they need people to believe in them and champion them.” Adds Andrew, “After a wedding, we’ll send a couple a note that says, ‘Hey, your love story is already making a difference in the world,’ and give them information in case they want to become more involved.” Locally, he helps teach kids who are taking photography classes. “We’ve also had photography classes do field trips to our studio and we’ve offered internships. I knew that teaching was always in my blood and now I get to do it with the lens and the camera.” Fifteen years after that Edina Art Fair, one of his first clients called him and said, “I bought one of your first pictures at the fair and the irony is the photo I bought was of a castle in Ireland, and now I’m marrying a man who was raised within 15 miles of that castle.” She told him he needed to come shoot her wedding. “So, I got to be part of both events, full circle,” says Andrew.

LET’S CELEBRATE TOGETHER

The Edina community is deeply rooted in history and tradition, and one of the city’s time honored events is the annual Edina 4th of July Parade. For over 100 years, the city has looked forward to gathering along the route to cheer on participants who make the parade memorable. Residents reserve their spots days in advance, marking their perches with chairs and blankets in preparation for the fun and memorable gathering. Since their team is in charge of the whole kit and caboodle, Edina Lifestyle asked some questions of Dick Crockett and Patty Dronen of the Edina Community Foundation in order to learn what to expect this year.

HOW MANY ESTIMATED ATTENDEES ARE THERE AT THE PARADE EACH YEAR?

WHEN DOES YOUR TEAM START PLANNING FOR THE PARADE AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PUT ALL THE PIECES TOGETHER?

WHAT IS THE 2022 THEME AND WHO ARE THE GRAND MARSHALS?

Typically, the team will start planning in January. We have meetings every couple of weeks where we come together to tick through our list of duties for the parade. We’ll be planning up until right before the parade, but at this point, things are coming together nicely. The great thing about this parade is that year to year the same people tend to be on and stay on the planning committee. Probably the most valuable person (in my opinion) on the team is Mary Brindle. She coordinates all of the parade entrants and entertainment, along with about 100 other duties.

Though no one has every truly counted, we estimate that 20,000 people attend the parade each year. With cable access there are people who attend the parade that way, and two years ago we did a Facebook live feed that people could watch.

HOW MANY ARE ESTIMATED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PARADE? There are well over 1,000 people that participate in the parade. The biggest groups tend to be the marching bands and local sports organizations.

This year’s theme is Edina United, Celebrating our Past, Present and Future. We are hoping to “enlist” a military veteran to spotlight the past, Dr. Stacey Stanley, EPS School Superintendent, and a number of students to spotlight the present, and for the future we are hoping that some of our Connecting with Kids Leadership Award winners will march with us. In March, we honored 11 high school students who are volunteering their time and talents in the community. The parade will give us an opportunity for a broader audience to meet those kids and get an idea of what they’ve done. CONTINUED >

WHAT ENTERTAINMENT IS PLANNED FOR THIS YEAR? There will be fireworks on the evening of July 3rd. They take place in Rosland Park at dusk. One of the most entertaining aspects of planning and talking about the parade is the kids who use chalk to draw circles in the street towards the end of the parade route. They do that so they can see if a marching horse takes a potty break in their circle. This year we will be providing chalk and instructions for the kids. People who sit at the start of the parade route probably don’t even know is a thing.

CAN YOU SHARE A BIT ABOUT THE VETERAN’S DINNER? Every year, there is a Veteran’s Dinner prior to the parade in order to honor those who have served organized by the Edina Parade Team. This dinner is to thank area veterans for their service to our country. The annual event includes music, speeches, and dinner for veterans and their families. The Independence Day Brass Band plays each branch’s anthem as each group of veterans is celebrated. Parade organizers share parade day details with veterans marching in the parade the next morning.

WHAT IS THE STARTING POINT FOR THIS YEAR’S PARADE AND THE ROUTE? On July 4th, the parade lines up along Willson Road and the parade kicks off at the corner Willson and Eden Avenue on the back side of City Hall. Starting at 10am, it runs along that road and turns onto 50th Street and concludes just before Halifax Avenue at 11:30am.
