LIFESTYLE LETTER

Welcome to Edina Lifestyle! Hello Edina, Welcome to the first issue of Edina Lifestyle! We are so excited and happy to be here. This truly is a homecoming. Having grown up in this community, attended Our Lady of Grace, Valley View Middle School, and Edina High School, my entire life has been about these neighborhoods, making friends, enjoying life, learning, doing business, and watching Edina evolve while remaining classy, unique, and strong. Most of my memories and current, everyday actions are here in this city and this publication comes from the heart. We may get teased about “eating cake” or being a bit of a “bubble,” but people who live here know that Edina strives to hold the bar just a bit higher. Edina maintains great education, safe neighborhoods, opportunities, close connections and a true sense of community and happiness. Edina is special, and I have found that jests are usually because people like you, or they are just plain jealous. Inside this issue, we visit with Kyle and Andrea of Neighborly Property Group. As residents of Edina, Andrea and Kyle bring a boutique, one-stop shop approach to remodeling and real estate. The team was also lucky enough to meet with Sohil Goorha to learn more about his restaurant and labor of love, Raag (which has gorgeous ambiance and amazing food). You’ve driven past Aurora on France a million times, and we wanted to connect you with a bit more of a behind the scenes on what they provide for our senior community. Finally, we share a bit about Randy’s electric and how every customer is a blessing. How will Edina Lifestyle be different? We will start small, “green” (Edina green of course), and this publication will develop over time. Our goal is to give the people and businesses of Edina a platform to tell their story and showcase the best of what this city has to offer. We are a bright spot and a connector to what makes Edina one of the most desired places to live. We are an expansion, and here to give you more of what you love and help solidify why you chose to live here. We’d love to hear from you, so feel free to reach out at citylifestyle.com/Edina or follow us on Facebook and Instagram. And yes, that photo is me circa 1988. We hope you enjoy the issue!

“Our city has many Indian restaurants with traditional dishes, Raag appeals to people seeking refined cuisine with Indian flavors.”

Tradition is changing course at a revamped Indian restaurant on 50th & France, mixing Indian spices with international cuisine. Bringing this fusion of flavors is Raag, the venue looking to take strides forward in the city’s Indian restaurant game. “Our city has many Indian restaurants with traditional dishes, Raag appeals to people seeking refined cuisine with Indian flavors ” said Sohil Goorha, the new Raag owner. As a hospitality professional, Culinary School graduate, and self-proclaimed globe trotter, Goorha has traveled to and dined in 20+ countries. He wanted to bring the tastes of modern-day India to Minneapolis. Since December 2020 under his new management, he has curated a progressive menu designed by Food Network Master Chef Ajay Kapoor, and hired new chefs who trained in Michelin rated restaurants. Goorha has also introduced new programs making a family-owned Raag into a class-act, fine dining destination. He enjoys meeting his guests and learning their experiences during their visits. At times you may run into his daughter Cira Goorha (4) who brightens the room with her personality. The word “Raag,” meaning symphony, is a sentiment to the venue’s grandeur of both palace and palette. AwardWinning Interior Designer Kara Bigos of Kamarron Design created the interior of Raag. The design incorporates subtle inspired accents of India, and the star of Raag’s decor—which Goorha calls “The Lady on the Wall”is a mural painted by a local artist of a woman embellished in traditional jewelry and a flowy robe. “We have a venue and food that is as good as what is offered at high-end Michelin rated French, Italian or Japanese cuisines, or for that matter a refined American steak-house, but we keep the food traditional so that it appeals to all palettes with a progressive twist” Goorha said. “When I say progressive and traditional, we offer dishes like ribs, sliders, sea bass, salmon, lamb chops and Canadian poutine. These are all dishes you would not expect at a traditional Indian restaurant”. Raag Glazed ribs takes the classic ribs and infuses them with a tamarind sauce glaze. “People who

12

don’t know anything about Indian food can start off by trying these ribs, samosas and Seabass,” Goorha said. The restaurant’s best-selling starter is a Coconut Soup which is vegan, gluten-free and infused with Indian sage and curry. “Every sip will give you a traditional coconut flavor but at the same time teases your palette with very mild seasoning of spices,” Goorha said. Beyond the main dish spectaculars, the menu notably hosts extensive vegan and vegetarian options, which Goorha says is again uncommon for a high-end Indian restaurant. Goorha credits the excellence of the menu from its “gastronomy” kitchen. “We experiment a lot with foods, fruits, flowers along with spices,” Goorha said. One of Raag’s dishes, Blackened Chicken, is a boneless chicken cooked in clay oven marinated with edible charcoal. By taking these new-age cooking risks, the restaurant garners foodies attention. Crusted Seabass is the restaurant’s newest concoction. The dish is a fillet of prime Chilean sea bass seasoned with chef special rub, coated with walnut crumbs, and cooked using a “secret” tandoor oven technique, served with baby carrots, asparagus, and house salad. Experimenting with traditional Indian dishes opened a door for Raag to consider each dish’s health benefits and how they could make each plate its own superfood. The menu also keeps the traditional staples of Delhi Butter chicken curry, Paneer tikka masala, Biryani, samosas and naan bread. Aside from the glamour of the main menu, Raag’s bar mixes its cocktails with the same approach its chefs take to experimenting in the kitchen. The drinks are sprinkled with traditional spices, infused with fruits, and entertain guests with flavors they rarely encounter. Raag’s signature drink, Kerala Spice Trail, is a bourbon mixed with their homemade bitter. The drink is served on the rocks with smoked cinnamon and orange peel. Raag has positioned itself to be a family-oriented foodie spot for all taste buds and also a place to sit with

friends around the bar. The bar serves bottomless mimosas and bloody marys for brunch on weekends and hosts live music every Wednesday. As a full-blown venue, this new era of Raag has turned its focus to community development and community event hosting. Raag Event Management team has been created to host gatherings such as fundraisers, rehearsal dinners, support dining needs for events around Minneapolis and private in-home dining (if someone is looking to be the dinner party host of the year). “Raag is not just a restaurant, it is a concept and a destination. We are creating a new identity of Raag to support everything that makes our community special and Raag will be at center of this culinary experience, “ said Goorha. “We are not thinking small. We are actually one of the bars carrying the biggest selection of alcohol with the most beautiful display.” In February 2022, Raag hosted its first Charity event in support of the mental health of front-line workers in partnership with MN Mental Health Advocate and plans to continue its work with other such initiatives. The venue is suited for up to 125-person events, extending to Raag’s outdoor patio in the warmer months and offers easy access and free onsite parking on either side of the complex. “My vision is an evolving Raag with the city of Minneapolis. I have spent decades in corporate and experienced the best of dining across the world. Locals and visitors from near and far remember the cuisine and the experience in places they live in or visit. We want Raag to be the local hangout spot and a destination,” Goorha. “We have locals that come here every evening, just to sit and talk and have a drink. We have seen guests from all over the country coming in to enjoy this unique experience. We are proud to be local Minnesotan with national and growing international appeal.” For more on Raag, visit www. raagindiancuisine.com. 3812 W 50th St., Minneapolis. (952) 405-8367. YOUR PARTNERS IN HOME SALES AND RENOVATION MEET A COUPLE OF PROS

16

LOCA LLY OWN E D | HOM E S E RVI CE S

Husband and wife Kyle and Andrea Vorachek are not only a team in their personal lives, but are also a dynamic duo in business. Married for 13 years and expecting their first child in June, the Edina couple has worked together most of their lives. Employed in the same construction company for many years, in 2018 they decided to combine their skills and start their own company, Neighborly Property Group, in Edina. With Kyle’s construction experience, and Andrea’s real estate skills, its unique and custom services are unlike most other companies. “I've always wanted to be a real estate agent, but the timing wasn’t always right,”

KYLE & ANDREA VORACHECK

says Andrea. “When we started to launch our own company, I was more than happy to get my license and finally be able to do my dream job. I truly love working with and helping people and I think what makes a really good agent is genuinely caring for your clients.” Of course, having both a renovation and remodeling expert and a real estate agent working together in one company is a real coup for clients. In this tough market, buyers aren’t always getting the exact house they want, but with Neighborly, they have the ability to purchase a home with Andrea and then have Kyle and his team turn it into the home of their dreams. Or, if a client is looking to sell a home with Andrea, but it needs some work, Kyle can come in and get the house ready to list for the best possible price. Another thing that makes Neighborly really stand out is its boutique service. “We don’t take on a ton of projects because we really value personal relationships,” says Kyle. “When we work with customers, we form bonds that last beyond the length of the project. That’s why the majority of our business is through referrals because people really enjoy the attention that we give to their projects on an individual basis.” Adds Andrea, “On the real estate side, what we really hang our hat on is what I would call a concierge service. We can do everything from beginning to end from the time we meet with the client for their initial listing consultation. We handle the staging, connect them with any vendors they would need to get their house ready for sale, and then from there do the professional photography and videography that make our listings stand out. Once it’s sold, we can even help secure movers.” Neighborly Property Group is partnered with Keller Williams Realty. “I interviewed with so many brokers and Keller Williams just stood out,” says Andrea. “They very much put their clients first and have a culture of integrity. A statistic just came out that our brokerage accounted for 12% of all transactions in the Twin Cities Metro area in 2021. When you think about how many brokerages and agents there are, the fact that our four offices (Edina, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, and Otsego) handled 12% of all transactions is pretty impressive.” The Neighborly real estate team has been built slowly with top tier agents whose values match the company mission and vison. Their construction team, says Kyle, is also incredible. “We've intentionally gone out and hired talented individuals who are the best at what they do so that we can provide a high quality, reliable product.” CONTINUED >

One of the bigger transformations they've done was on a home on Green Farms Road in Edina. “A hail storm hit Edina and we were able to get all the windows in the house replaced through insurance with new premium Pella windows,” he says. “I then sat down with the homeowner to discuss doing something really incredible with their home. It was really dark and dreary with this brown brick and I think they'd been wanting to do something for a while and this was the perfect opportunity to make it the home they've always wanted. “We changed the outside color on the windows from brown to black which is on trend and got rid of the old style grid patterns in the glass. They're in a beautiful setting with a wooded backyard and they wanted to be able to bring that inside a little bit. We also painted all the brick white and it just had a profound effect on the curb appeal of the home and the overall appearance.” Another project was on Ewing Avenue South. “On that one we did a complete exterior remodel - new roof, new gutters, new siding, and new windows. The home was really dated and we worked with the homeowner to go through a design process. We used 3D modeling software so they could see the finished product before we even got started.” Then unexpectedly, the homeowners had to relocate, but Andrea was there to list their home. “We ended up not only finishing the exterior remodel, but then I staged, prepped and got the house sold in a weekend in multiple offers over asking price,” she says. “We actually set a record sale price for that neighborhood for a rambler that had not been fully torn down or to the studs renovation.” One of the best things about Neighborly Property Group, says Kyle, is doing it as a team. “We get to share this amazing dream of what this company is now and what it can become with all of our team members.” A shared vision they have been able to unite under as a team is the company’s foundational principle of philanthropy. “One of the reasons we started our own business was because we wanted to be able to give back to the local and global community,” says Kyle. “We donate 10% of our profits to multiple nonprofit organizations every year. We also volunteer our time, along with our employees. It's been really humbling to see the impact that we've been able to have in just a short amount of time and we're excited as we grow to give more and more and have an even greater impact. I think it’s pretty cool that when you work with Neighborly, you know that something good is happening both in your home and around the world.”To find out more, go to https://www.neighborlymn.com/.

A Community of Care

A place where seniors can thrive in both body and mind ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI

FAM ILY CA R E | PR OFESS I ONAL S E RVI CE S

When Linda Engler’s parents could no longer take care of their single-family home due to age and reduced physical abilities, she and her brother researched many senior living facilities to find a place where their mom and dad could be close to family and friends, feel safe and comfortable and still have their independence. Once they narrowed down the options, Linda took her parents to visit so they could choose the one that was the best fit. After touring Aurora on France in Edina, her parents felt it was the perfect new home for them. Her father, a man of few words, said, “I like that place. I could live there.” So, in November of 2018, they made the move. “The facilities are beautiful,” says Linda. “I'm an interior designer so I appreciate the aesthetic, and that was important to my parents too. It really feels inviting and welcoming and has a quiet elegance about it.” Situated near Rosland Park, it’s an easy walk or ride to Lake Cornelia, restaurants and shopping. There’s even a lovely natural pond behind the property. The experienced and professional staff also stand out. “The people go above and beyond,” she says. “They're all very approachable and very friendly. They always make a point of saying hello and engaging in conversation and making sure all the residents’ and families’ needs are being met. They know my name, they know the residents’ names. It’s nice for me as a guest, but also for the people living there. It’s a loving and caring community to spend time in.” Right from the beginning, Linda and her parents appreciated that Aurora had different levels of care available, from senior living and assisted living to memory care and transitional care units. It’s also connected to M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital, so residents can easily access healthcare, visit their doctors and pick up prescriptions. “Both of my parents were patients there at one time or another, and they could take the skyway to visit the other and didn’t have to rely on anyone else,” she says. In the beginning, Linda says she couldn’t have foreseen what care would be needed and having these different options in place gave her a sense of security. This was a blessing when her father took a turn for the worse; Aurora was able to seamlessly transition him to a higher-level care and ensured all his needs were met. Her dad has since passed away, but her mother, now 85, is still enjoying her time there. She loves Friday happy hours and chatting with her friends and neighbors. Residents can be as active as they choose. “They've got wonderful program options,” says Linda. “They bring in a lot of musicians, which my mom loves, and really offer a nice diversity of entertainment.” These include Tuesday night and Saturday afternoon movies, weekly shopping outings, bridge and other games, craft and art projects and spiritual/religious programming. Dining is also an enjoyable part of residents’ everyday routines. The chef-prepared restaurant style meals are delicious, nutritious and varied, so residents can always find something they desire. The recipes are crafted from fresh and often locally-sourced ingredients, and residents who

have special dietary needs can also have their meals tailored just for them. From meat and seafood to dessert and snacks, everything is thoughtfully chosen and prepared. Since her parents first moved to Aurora on France, Linda has had tremendous peace of mind. “When they were still in their single family home it was a constant source of concern for the whole family. And whenever we went out of town, there seemed to be a major crisis. Now, those crises may still happen, but there are professionals there to manage them. They also do a great job in being proactive in taking care of things.” Aurora also offers many amenities that make living there a true pleasure, from its outdoor grilling area and club lounge and billiards to its outdoor patio, fireplaces, fitness room, and beauty salon. Living options range from small studios with one bedroom and one bath to 1800 square foot two bedroom and two bath units. Linda’s mother has a large one bedroom plus a den, a dining area and a big kitchen. It’s a real home. “Having both parents, and now my mother, at Aurora has allowed me to continue to live my own life while still having them, and now her, be very much a part of it,” says Linda. “If she needs a ride, or isn't able to go down to get her mail, she can call and ask someone for assistance. It offers such a breadth of support so we’ve been covered every step of the way.” To find out more about Aurora on France and to take a tour, go to https://www.auroraonfrance.com/ or call them at (612) 208-6996.

Family

Currents How Randy’s Electric Became an Outlet of Blessings

24

H OU SE CA LL | HOM E SERVI CE S

ARTICLE BY GRAHAM JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY PHIL MCKENZIE

It all started with a phone call back home. That’s what Dan Smith, the owner of Randy’s Electric, told me about his journey to buying his family’s business. He never had intentions of taking up the torch: “I always wanted to do things my own way, not under my dad’s grand shadow” says Dan. What started with a notion to call his parents every week eventually led to Dan buying Randy’s Electric in June of 2021. “What’s crazy to me, is when you look back and connect all the dots,” says Dan. But to tell this story properly, we have to start a little further back than those phone calls. Randy’s Electric was founded by Dan’s father, Randy Smith, in February of 2002. Since the beginning, something that separated the company from others was their clear mission: “To be a blessing,” pulled straight from the strong faith at the core of the company. Randy would say, “although it’s unique for the industry, that’s what we believe.” That ethos trickles down not only to every job, but how the company views its own employees: “When we interact with our customers, with our team, and with our families, we always want to be a blessing. That’s our purpose,” says Dan. Since 2002, Randy’s Electric has grown from just Randy to almost sixty employees. That growth has always been taken very seriously, especially when it comes to hiring new electricians. Randy’s Electric insists on having not only the best licensed journeyman electricians, but individuals who can give the best customer experience as well as electrical work. “We hire based on who you are, not what you can do. We can teach you what you can do… but it’s hard to teach someone integrity.” That focus on excellent service as well as technical proficiency isn’t just about following the company’s mission, it also comes down to economics. “We want to provide consistency for our customer, that’s why we offer upfront pricing. A veteran journeyman, or a newly minted journeyman, you are paying the same amount – regardless of how long it takes them to complete the job,” says Dan. Randy’s Electric

prices the jobs up-front to incentivize electricians to do their best work and give customers peace of mind, knowing there are no hidden costs. And it is all backed by the company’s Lifetime Guarantee on Workmanship. Dan started out shadowing his father at work during the summers when he was 12. He enjoyed learning from and working with his father, but despite that, he always wanted to forge his own path. There was one very memorable moment in these early years. Dan recalls one such time when shadowing his father, “he told me to pull a certain wire, and I messed up. I came to on the ground with my father crying over me.” Dan had misunderstood which wires to pull, causing him to black out. However, it didn’t slow him down from carving his own path. Growing up, Dan took his interests in other directions. From staring his own lawncare business at 12, to growing

26

churches, to remodeling and renting houses, to staring his own media company, Dan has dipped his toes in several industries. In 2017, however, he returned to Randy’s Electric working to grow and rebrand the company, “And then I kept taking on other tasks: phone systems, IT, our parts and fleet, and the way we provide service. I just kept naturally taking on more, and I did that for four years, just learning the business inside and out,” says Dan. And it was during that time, that Dan started calling mom & dad every week. The epiphany came to Dan in church, “I just felt like I needed to make sure I called my parents to see how they were doing.” Those weekly conversations brought Dan especially close with his father when they began to remodel the family cabin. On one of their weekend drives to and from the cabin, their conversation turned to aspirations, with Randy asking Dan, “What do you want?” To his own surprise, Dan

responded, “I want to buy the business.” And without missing a beat Randy said, “When?” Despite the exchange being a surprise to both men, Dan remembers, “We both just kinda sat and thought: this is happening.” Together, they decided Dan would buy Randy’s Electric in June of 2021. They signed and finished in July, and Randy, who had been struggling with diabetes, was in the hospital in August. He passed away later that year. And looking back at that timeline, from returning to Randy’s Electric, to the decision to call his parents, to the swift purchase of the company, “That’s where it feels like it was just meant to be,” says Dan. Moving forward, through Randy’s Electric, Dan still works to ‘be a blessing’ with each and every job, every customer, and every hire. For more information on Randy’s Electric, visit https://randyselectric.com/ or call (612) 470-0914.

When ready to absorb the historic side of the city, the centuries-old landmark and winery, Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery, offers guests “historic tours, family tours, wine and food pairings, bourbon tastings and chef-inspired food and wine pairings” that are unparalleled in their local experience. Likewise, Nelson’s Green Brier Distillery carries an incredible story of origination and bottles a remarkable 1860 family recipe that made Tennessee Whiskey world famous. Let’s talk about one of the most anticipated—the food scene! Three things Nashville is known for are hot chicken, barbecue, and meat & three restaurants. Nashville has amassed a lot of attention over the last 10 years for its exquisite food scene, with

several James Beard award-winning chefs and an incredible independent restaurant scene. People know how good the food scene is, but if they really want to find those independent chef-driven restaurants like Rolf and Daughters, FOLK, Bastion, Locust, or Henrietta Red, these are the chefs that garner a lot of attention that you won’t want to miss. For the art lovers at heart, Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings. Music history venues such as the new National Museum of African American Music will complement your old favorite Frist Art Museum, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens, and Grand Ole Opry experiences. According to @visitmusiccity, “Everyone should do the Grand Ole Opry one night; it’s not just about the music, it’s a piece of history and the world’s longest running radio show.” Last but not least is the music scene. Whether you’re into blues, jazz, honky tonk, rock, symphony or quite literally any genre of music imaginable, Nashville has it all. Spend one night on Broadway hopping bar to bar, sit orchestra-side at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, tour and take in a show at the 130-year-old Ryman Auditorium, then experience a songwriter’s night at The Bluebird or The Listening Room Cafe. The music is different every night everywhere, so one is best served by referring to visitmusiccity.com for their Upcoming Concerts Calendar to soak up all the magnificent sounds.

“Nashville’s ever-growing arts scene is as diverse and approachable as its music scene. Murals, streets art, public art, art galleries, and museums are all a part of experiencing Nashville’s visual art offerings.”
