It Looks Like We Made It!

December 2022 PUBLISHER

Alexandra Patty | alexandra.patty@citylifestyle.com EDITOR

Kassi Miranowski | kassi.miranowski@citylifestyle.com

Looking back at 2022, Edina Lifestyle has covered a fair amount of ground, and December will mark its 9th issue. One of the craziest parts of delivering a monthly publication is how far we work ahead, and how fast the months melt away. Year end is a time for reflection and appreciating everything that has come before this, as well as setting intentions for the year ahead. Our team is already working on exciting things for 2023, and we can’t wait to share them with you in the new year. In this issue, the team spoke with Peter Schmitt, CEO of our iconic and beloved Schmitt Music. Peter is excited to bring music lovers into a new era and continue on with the Schmitt philosophies that have made them a musical staple in Minnesota. They are settling in to their new home on the edge of Bloomington and Edina (the old Lifetouch Building), and are committed to continuing their music legacy. I know you have been hearing a LOT about the re-opening of the Edina Theatre, but we are just as excited as everyone else. Michelle Mann talks about what it takes to get good movies, and shares some of her own favorites. If you haven’t made the trip over, it truly is fun for the whole family. Personally, I have already seen two movies there, and it was the best cinema experience I have ever had! We end the year with information on our giving back initiative. City Lifestyle, our franchise leader, started this campaign nationwide in hopes that it will grow and serve those in need. If you are aware of families or people who are struggling, please nominate them. Or, please remember to be kind and give in other ways if you are able. Fred Rogers said, “All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we’re giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That’s one of the things that connects us as neighbors…” Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season,

For movie lovers in and around Edina, there’s now an extra special place to indulge in the magic of movies. What used to be the dated Edina Theatre, showing mostly independent art movies, was acquired by Mann Theatres and underwent a total renovation. “We upgraded everything,” says Michelle Mann, whose grandfather Marvin started the business in 1936 with his brother Ted. The auditoriums have brand new screens, new sound, sound panels, and for a truly luxurious experience, heated recliners. Today, Mann Theatres has nine locations in Minnesota, including its newest in Edina. Michelle and Michael’s father, Steve, actually owned the theater in the late seventies and early eighties. When the venue had to shut its doors during COVID, and the then-owners decided not to reopen, it was a great opportunity to bring it back into the family. For fans of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, the upstairs bar area may look very familiar. “We walked upstairs and thought, wow, the way the structure and architecture is, it would work perfectly to recreate The Gold Room,” says Michelle. Most of the patrons recognize it, but for those who don’t, they’re just wowed by its beauty. The Manns also created Instagrammable physical installations such as the ghost twins holding hands at the end of the hallway, and an old typewriter just like the one Jack Nicholson uses to type his novel on in the movie. The full-service bar has popular beers on tap and a variety of wines. “We also have six crafted cocktails that are specific to The Shining, such as the Red Rum,” she says. You can watch the iconic movie on one of the theater’s four screens, but there are also plenty of other choices. They are still deciphering what is going to be most popular, so they’ve started to dabble into different genres such as romantic comedies, family movies, independent films and fantasy. What most people don’t know is that movie theaters cannot just get access to any movie they want. “We have a film buyer who has relationships with all the studios,” says Michelle. “He negotiates with them as far as what films we play and where they’re placed. If a film company doesn’t feel that it will play well here, the answer is no. He then negotiates for us.” Of course, the ability to stream movies changed the theater industry even before COVID hit, but since then, watching films at home has become much more common. But, says Michelle, small screens just don’t do movies, especially cinematic movies, justice. “The new Top Gun movie is a great example. It was made two years ago and Tom Cruise could have put it

to streaming, but he decided not to since this is a film that has to be seen in a movie theater where the community comes together and watches it together. “It just shows now that it’s still amazing to come to a movie theater, and there’s nothing like seeing a movie in an actual theater. Sitting in an auditorium with a screen bigger than life along with incredible sound - you cannot get that at home.” Also, when you’re in a movie theater, there are no distractions like there are at home. It’s a real escape from reality, at least for a couple of hours. With everything being digital now, viewers get a crisp, clear picture and that amazing surround sound. And don’t forget the popcorn. “In Edina, I’d say we go through about 40 or 50 bags of

14

LOCA L’S CH OICE | LOCA L S E RVI CE S

popcorn seed a week, and these bags are massive. In some of our theaters, that goes up to a hundred bags during the holidays.” Most of Mann’s locations, including Edina, also offer hot food items such as chicken, pizza, and pretzel bites. In addition to working in the family business, Michelle is a single mom of a toddler whom she calls the light of her life. Although she doesn’t allow him any screen time yet, Michelle does have her own favorite movies. “Because I’m a singer, I love musical films such as What’s Love Got To Do With It and Selena. I also love when Harry Met Sally and Man on Fire.” To learn more, visit manntheatres.com/theatre/89/Edina-4. 3911 W 50th St., Edina. (952) 926-1575.

Creating Beautiful Sounds for Over 125 years A FAMILY LEGACY OF MAKING MUSIC ARTICLE BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK PHOTOGRAPHY

As family-owned-and-operated Schmitt Music celebrated its 125th-anniversary last year, the founder’s great-great grandson, Peter Schmitt, took on the role of CEO. “I’m just blessed to have the opportunity to continue the legacy of Schmitt Music,” he says. “It has been overwhelming and exciting all at the same time.” Founder Paul A. Schmitt built a company that has carried on through generations, and there are currently four family members from the fourth and fifth generations still actively involved in the business. Co-owner Doug Schmitt has been with the company since 1983 and Doug’s son, Ted, joined the company in 2016. He currently serves as Controller. Peter’s father, Tom Schmitt, has been with the company for 51 years and served as president and CEO for 36 years. Last year, he stepped into the role of executive chairman. Peter, who joined the company in 2014, is part of the fifth generation to be in a leadership role in the company. “My dad has been totally supportive of my initiatives and projects here at Schmitt Music,” he says. One of those initiatives has been relocating its corporate headquarters from Brooklyn Center to the border of Edina and Bloomington. “It made sense for us to relocate our Brooklyn Center corporate

offices, warehouse, and flagship retail space for band and orchestra instruments and our flagship piano showroom,” says Peter. “We engaged with the design firm Shea out of Minneapolis and Finn Daniels Architects to create an elevated, unique experience for our customers.” The contemporary design of the new location blends all the aspects of its music business, from retail and repair to classes and performances. “Customers can have one-on-one interactions with our repair professionals and luthiers,” he says. “We have private lesson studios for beginner, intermediate and advanced musicians. We primarily teach students in the fourth and fifth grades, although we have some younger students taking private piano lessons, and of course, we teach adults as well. We serve all levels from novice through professional musicians.” Its qualified instructors encompass a large range of musical professionals. PreCOVID Schmitt Music was teaching over 10,000 students each week in its 12 stores in six different states and throughout many public and private schools. Schmitt Music also hosts spring and winter piano recitals in its stores as well as some smaller ensemble performances. The new store will feature master classes and Steinway artists performing in

the new 120 seat concert hall as well (Schmitt is an exclusive dealer for Steinway & Sons.) “We also have a close partnership with the University of Minnesota, particularly with Preston Duncan (the professor of saxophone), with the MacPhail Center for Music, and with many others ,” says Peter. Being in business since 1896 is a milestone many companies don’t come close to achieving. “We’re grateful to our very supportive customers and communities and look forward to serving them for the next 125 years.” Schmitt Music is more than just selling and repairing instruments, providing lessons and hosting performances. It’s also about creating relationships with its customers and connecting with the community. “We serve schools by providing students with instruments through our Better-Than-Rent student instrument program,” says Peter. “We also have partnered with several select districts to offer instruments to kids who cannot afford them. Our goal is to create more music makers. That’s what we’re passionate about - giving kids access to music education.” One example is in partnership with McPhail Center for Music in Minneapolis; “We support their Ascension [Catholic School] program and provide instruments at no cost.” But, what really makes Schmitt stand out, he says, is what they call their three P’s - people, programs, and participation. “So, people stands for our staff and the level of expertise we have here at Schmitt Music; programs refers to what we offer along with our instruments and making those instruments accessible to students and parents; and participation highlights how we participate in the school communities we serve,” he says. While being part of the leadership of this long-standing, successful family business keeps him very busy, Peter also puts aside personal time to spend with his family. “I live in Afton with my beautiful wife, Margit, and three children,” he says. “Paul is our eldest, he’s 11 and plays the trombone in band, Timothy is 8, and our youngest, Lynn, is 6 years old. We enjoy just being outside. We like to ski in the winter. We live on five acres and have 40 chickens that we care for, and we like gardening as well.” His sons actually started an egg business and use their electric scooters to sell and deliver farm fresh eggs to neighbors. Peter laughs and says, “They’re already real entrepreneurs with a business mindset!” And in addition to being a wife and mom, Margit is an extremely talented artist whose favorite mediums are drawing and painting. Peter looks forward to many good years ahead with Schmitt. “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to lead the wonderful people that we have working for us at Schmitt Music,” he says. Visit their new headquarters at 7800 Picture Drive in Bloomington or online at schmittmusic.com for information about its musical instruments, classes and upcoming events.

ARTICLE BY KASSI MIRANOWSKI

Rich and creamy, this hot chocolate will warm you from head to toe! This extra easy recipe makes a large batch in the crockpot, ready to scoop into for your holiday events, or just let it sit on your counter over the weekend for your family to dip into on these chilly winter nights!

DIRECTIONS

• 6 cups whole milk, OR 3 cups whole milk and 3 cups half and half • 2 -12 oz. cans evaporated milk • 2 cups heavy cream, (1 pint) • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 3 cups chocolate chips

1. Mix all the ingredients together in a 6-quart crockpot. Cook on low for 4-6 hours, stirring often the first hour, to make sure the chocolate incorporates and doesn’t burn on the bottom. 2. The City Lifestyle

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
