The leaves are changing, we’re into football season, and maybe pre-planning for the holidays? We all know what is just around the corner…but, let’s not think about it right this second. Let’s think about something fun! Edina Lifestyle had a great time putting the October issue together. We stopped to visit with the awesome team at the KOHLER Signature Store by First Supply in Edina. Many customers think that everyKOHLER store is the same, but that is definitely not the case. This gem in our own backyard was all started back in 1897, and they continue to be family owned and operated. From fixtures to tile, to lighting and a fabulous and friendly design team, they can help you create that perfect space you’ve been craving. Don’t forget about that custom cabinetry to go with those fixtures! Our team learned a lot from Dmitry Ivanovs, owner of Elegance Custom Cabinetry. It’s not just about the art and craftsmanship of cabinet making, but today it also comes down to equipment, quality products and the technology to produce a specific, down to the detail perfection that the Elegance team strives for with every single project. After much success in the Twin Cities, they are even opening services in the Naples, Florida area (a perfect compliment for a second home). We caught up with Origin Meals, a locally owned and operated food delivery company who offers delicious and nutritious options for the whole family. Pressed for time this fall? These creative combinations crafted by Executive Chef, Jeffrey Kalinowski, might be the perfect answer to those days where the menu is just too difficult to plan. Finally, we give some tips on how to host your very own tailgate party. So, if you can't make it to the stadium, you can create just as much fun right at home. Cheers to fall, comfort food and beautiful spaces where we can gather and gear up for what’s coming!

It’s All About the Details In a post-quarantine world, many have a much better appreciation for the spaces we occupy. Details from sinks to shower heads can impact day-to-day life drastically, even long after we are allowed to go outside. It is those details that Judy Kimble, the Director of Sales and Marketing of First Supply LLC, specializes in. KOHLER’s Signature Store by First Supply in Edina provides style trends from the kitchen to the bathroom and has an expert design team to help show you exactly how to perfect those details in your home. A common misconception people have about the KOHLER Signature Store is that it is a store owned by KOHLER. In truth, the KOHLER Signature Store by First Supply is an independent affiliate. First Supply is a Wisconsin family-owned fifth-generation company that owns four Kohler Signature Stores and fifteen Gerhard’s Kitchen, Bath, & Lighting stores. The Kohler Signature Store in Edina is now ten years old and holds the title of the first Kohler Signature Store in the USA.

KOHLER SIGNATURE STORE BY FIRST SUPPLY HAS THE ANSWERS ARTICLE BY GRAHAM JOHNSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDREW VICK PHOTOGRAPHY
“We set ourselves apart by service. You can shop price all day long, but if you want someone who cares about the project, that’s us.”
First Supply’s history stretches back 125 years to 1897 when a group of customers who felt they could provide better service than the current distributor – a truck driver, a well driller, a salesman, and a plumbing contractor, decided to form their own distribution company initially called “Lacrosse Plumbing.” One of the most pivotal historical stories is a salesman visiting Gary Poehling (2nd generation ownership) from the Dakotas to collect his pipe order. During his trip back on the train, the salesman heard WW2 was declared. Knowing Gary was “good for it,” the salesman added a zero to the end of the order. That moment

in history ended up setting the pipe allocation for the rest of the war, giving enough to supply the Fort McCoy project, and ultimately paving the way for the business. “It was a huge contract that ultimately gave us the financial footing for future growth,” says Judy. In 1940, Gary Poehling added cabinetry to the La Cross showroom, creating what is commonly regarded as the first Kitchen & Bath showroom in the country. As an independent store, the KOHLER Signature Store works to best help its clients navigate the often-confusing world of home improvement. “We set ourselves apart by service. You can shop price all day long, but if you want someone who cares about the project, that’s us,” says Judy. “These days renovators have a much more tangible idea of what they are looking for in a project thanks to apps like Pinterest and Instagram. When customers come into the store, it is expected that people have Googled “beautiful bathrooms or kitchens” to get ideas. Many bring out their Pinterest board to show us what they want,” says Judy. Because of that newfound specificity, the KOHLER Signature Store relies on its knowledgeable design team to provide excellent service and advice. “We can really hone in on your taste and style and get the most value for your budget,” says Judy. Unsurprisingly, with so many stuck inside the four walls they called home during the pandemic, many decided to
“No one is going to walk in knowing everything, and that’s ok.” 16
LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HOME + DE S I GN
make improvements. But, the surge in home improvement across the country has led to shortages and issues in the global supply chain that persists to this day. Because of these shortages, it is increasingly common for “People to finish 95% of a project and wait on one or two minor things,” says Judy. Fortunately for the KOHLER Signature Store, because of their strong inventory and buying power, they have managed to avoid much of these delays. What is surprising about the surge in renovations in the past few years are the new trends. Judy credits HGTV shows like “Fixer Upper” for inspiring and shifting people’s tastes drastically, and “so much of it stems from the Farmhouse style. Chip and Johanna have had more influence in style than Frank Lloyd Wright,” says Judy. Other large-scale trends can also be seen as an extension of that farmhouse style, including a move away from white kitchens and towards “A lot more color,” says Judy. But no matter if you’re redesigning your kitchen, bathroom, or the entire house, the truth of these projects is that the details matter. Some even require a bit of psychology.
For example, Judy states that gender can significantly impact the type of showerhead one buys because “Men tend to look at the showerhead, while women look away,” she says. That distinction can drastically affect how one showers and ultimately affect what type of showerhead will best suit their needs. Other details might just be a sign of the times, such as smart showers that you can start from your phone or intelligent toilets with built-in nightlights. Judy, who is currently working on her own renovation, brings in her full knowledge of fixtures, and brands, including every detail required to finish the project. But unlike Judy, most of us can’t draw from decades of experience working through the details of cabinetry and vanity depth. “No one is going to walk in knowing everything,” says Judy, “and that’s ok.” That is where the KOHLER Signature Store steps in and can help nail those tricky details when it matters most. For more, call (952) 922-2825 or visit their showroom at 7101 France Ave S. Edina.

Eating Healthy Made
Easy
Nutritious and Delicious Meals Delivered Right to Your Door 20
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | FOOD + BE VE RAGE
Eating healthy is essential for living and feeling our best, but it’s also a lifestyle that requires a lot of time and energy. Planning menus, buying ingredients, and cooking take much-needed time out of our days. With everything else going on with jobs, kids, school and sports, it’s often tempting to just go through the drive through of our local fast food restaurants. It’s quick and easy, but doesn’t give us the ideal nutrition and fuel our bodies need. Thankfully, there’s an easier solution to feed yourself and your family in a way you can feel good about. Origin Meals delivers nutritious and delicious food right to your door. Founded in 2013, it originally catered mainly to gyms for members who wanted to follow a paleo diet. “We had offered home delivery services prior to COVID, but when COVID shut all the gyms down, we pivoted directly to homes,” says company founder and president, Tyler Carlson. “We ultimately found that our service was more convenient for our clients when it was brought directly to their houses.” Today, Origin delivers to subscribers all across the major metro areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and is adding new zip codes all the time. Ordering meals on its website could not be easier, and the menus cater to special dietary needs such as vegetarianism and those with gluten and other allergies. “Everything we do is gluten free and we don’t use any refined sugars or industrially processed or hydrogenated oils,” he says. There are also no fake colors or flavors, or artificial preservatives or chemicals. There’s a variety of meal options so you can pick and choose, or you can enable the system to auto assign meals according to your dietary preferences. “It can be as simple as just subscribing - setting it up and forgetting about it,” says Tyler. “But, it can also be as tailored as you want it to be.” Subscribers can order as few as 3 meals a week or as many as 15.

“NOTHING IS EVER FROZEN. MEALS ARE PRODUCED IN A LOCAL KITCHEN AND ARE DELIVERED BY US DIRECTLY TO OUR CUSTOMERS’ DOORS.”
Executive Chef Jeffrey Kalinowski
Whatever your choices, every meal is made fresh with the highest quality ingredients such as 100% grass-fed beef, free range turkeys, antibiotic free chickens and wild caught salmon. Sauces and marinades are also made from scratch. “Nothing is ever frozen,” he says. “Meals are produced in a local kitchen and are delivered by us directly to our customers’ doors. Being local allows us to have a fresher, higher quality product. Our head chef, Jeff, is in charge of making and preparing our menus.” Adds William, the company’s marketing manager, “Jeff likes to stick with a worldly palate that includes Asian and Mediterranean dishes. Something that I think Origin has had from the beginning was just a good sense of variety, which is important in order to avoid too much repetition.” Menus constantly change so you’ll never run out of new and tempting meals. The way the program works, explains Tyler, is

that they design a six week menu that will rotate through twice. and then they design a new menu. “So every 12 weeks our menu really changes, which also helps us keep our foods in season.” Origin will also deliver to companies. “We can bring pre-made salad bowls and grain bowls right to an office setting,” he says. A large component of Origin Meals, says William, is giving back time to people. “We find that’s something that our customers are really grateful for, and for our clients with allergens, they are so grateful that they have the peace of mind that they can just open up a meal and know that they’re not going to have to face any allergens without searching labels.” For other people, they just love the fact that they don’t have to go grocery shopping and cook dinner after work in order to maintain a healthier lifestyle. “We definitely get reports of people who have lost significant amounts of weight from
eating our meals for lunch and dinner,” says William. “It really helps with their calorie counting and following macros, if that’s what they choose.” In addition to keeping people’s bodies healthy, Origin Meals is focused on keeping the planet healthy by using sustainable practices. It does this primarily through its recyclable packaging and its delivering mechanism. “Instead of shipping everything in a corrugated box that someone has to throw away every week, we use a reusable cooler program,” says Tyler. “Then, when people are done, they put the coolers back outside and they’re picked up when the next delivery is made.” Origin’s kitchen, thanks to it preorder system, also produces 50% less waste than a traditional grocery store. To look through their menus and see for yourself what can be on your table in the next few days, go to originmeals.com.

Elegance Custom Cabinetry Strives for Perfection

Imagine moving from your homeland to a new country. You don’t know many people, and you don’t speak the language. The future is totally unpredictable. All you have is a craft and a dream, and the will-power to build a new life. That is how Dmitry Ivanovs started his journey when he moved from Latvia to the United States. Raised by his grandparents and bringing with him what he calls “old school standards,” which include values like transparency, honesty, and hard work. Dmitry carried these skills, principals, and his passion for cabinet making to Minnesota. “It was always my dream to own my own shop,” says Dmitry. And, after perfecting his skills by working for and with other cabinet makers, he finally felt ready to branch out on his own. He started Elegance Custom Cabinetry in 2008, and today, they are one of the premier cabinet making companies in the Twin Cities. The goal, says Dmitry, “was to make a difference through my product and artistry.” The detail and originality in his designs are truly unique, and can be seen in his meticulous process from start to finish. The Elegance Custom Cabinetry team finds inspiration globally, for example, from countries like Great Britain, where cabinetry design is oftentimes cutting edge. But, many of the ideas stem from Dmitry’s vision, artistry, and passion for cabinet making. A portion of the process is still done by hand, but the precision, perfection and a lot of the grain matching is achieved with Dmitry’s commitment to investing in high end, digital equipment. The computerized technology in
the machinery not only improves efficiency, but also ensures that cuts, molding, inlays, painting and priming is done without flaws. His team prefers to work with exotic woods like Mahogany, Walnut, Rose Wood and White Oak Burl. In the shop, Dmitry is quick to point out his various pieces of equipment which he says, “allows them to stay one step ahead” in the industry. Dmitry laughs when he says, “Some people tell me it’s overkill, but it’s all about the quality.” In addition to state-of-the-art equipment, Elegance Custom Cabinetry provides top of the line products and hard to source exotic wood, veneer, Italian primer, high quality stains, and paints that feel like velvet. Creativity is constantly at the core, and Dmitry likes to mix materials introducing chevron-patterned Walnut with a brass inlay, or Ebony and Sycamore combinations that really bring out the clarity and beauty of the wood. Elegance Custom Cabinetry can produce any type of style, from contemporary to traditional, but Dmitry loves the more modern design. He mentions that “Euro style” is a very popular way to maximize smaller areas because the cabinetry is frameless and takes up less space. Another current trend is a “yacht finish” or what Dmitry refers to as a “Rolls Royce finish,” which is very smooth, polished and flawless. From custom kitchen cabinetry, to bath cabinets, bars, bookcases and mudrooms, Elegance Custom Cabinetry has completed a variety of unique projects for hundreds of customers. To say Dmitry is a perfectionist is an understatement. Striving for perfection he says, “just shapes people and makes them better.” He chooses his projects carefully,

Ultimately, the customer and their vision comes first, but Dmitry definitely recalls his favorites. “There is always one project every year,” says Dmitry, where he is pushed to be better than before. But, each and every job is always treated as if it is being finished for his own home. Beyond the hard work in the shop and on the job site, Dmitry makes time for industry trade shows, continuing
education, and networking with other cabinet makers across the globe so he can make sure Elegance Custom Cabinetry stays at the top of their game. At the heart of it all, is a true love for what he does. It circles back to his youth, hard work, and striving to do better every day. Confident in what he has accomplished, yet still humble, Dmitry reflects and simply states, “I am not a business man, I am a cabinet maker.”
