LIFESTYLE LETTER

Look sharp! It’s the style issue!

September 2025 PUBLISHER

John Lee | john.lee@citylifestyle.com P U B L I CAT I O N D I R E C TO R

David Scheller | david.scheller@citylifestyle.com

Dear Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader,

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Do you think Eden Prairie has no style? Then I politely yet firmly entreat you to think again. If our town has no style, then why does its foremost magazine contain the word “style” in its name? Q.E.D., dear reader! Even a fleeting glance at the styles featured in this issue would be enough to make the average Parisienne go soak her head in the Seine. We got Bill’s Toggery, which has dressed the well-dressed gentleman since 1931. We got SCHEELS, which offers my personal favorite style of back-to-school shopping: the easy kind. We also got Madison House Interiors, whose inspired designs can transform any blah into ah! What’s the point in being stylish if you aren’t also being seen? Hm? Have you ever pondered that one, dear reader? If so, then you’ll be excited to learn about two really neat social occasions featured in this issue: the Eagle Excellence Showcase, which will celebrate Eden Prairie Schools’ distinguished alumni and retired staff, as well as others who made significant contributions to our community or attained admirable levels of success in business, leadership, academia, activities, or public service; and Shakopee’s TAP 2025, which will celebrate something equally good: beer. Plus great local businesses, too! Do you know what’s always in style? That’s right: great local businesses. That’s why I believe Residential Heating & Air Conditioning, QC Kinetix, CottageCare, Nordquist Tax & Business Services, The Cottage Foodie, and Eden Prairie Montessori are all right on theme for this issue. As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing on our magazine’s pages!

Billy Wermerskirchen, Proprietor

For Timeless Good Looks in Suits, Sportswear, and Accessories ARTICLE BY BILL SCHELLER PHOTOGRAPHY BY EMILY JOHN

All those years, all those suits of mine. There was the charcoal number with natural shoulders and narrow lapels, for that Ivy League look (as close to the Ivy League as I ever got). That gave way to more daring corduroy and seersucker double-breasted styles. Next up, chalk stripes on a three-piece, pure Wall Street (never got there, either). And so on, down to my current favorite, a simple navy two-piece.

“With a broad selection of fabrics, and a full-time tailor on staff, the shop can expertly fit men in all shapes and sizes.” Those suits marked the changes in my own closet. But for a professional’s take on styles that have come and gone – and come back again – I talked with Billy Wermerskirchen, third-generation proprietor of Bill’s Toggery, the Shakopee institution founded by his grandfather in 1931. “Over the past few years, suits have gone from loose-fitting, with pleats and big shoulders, to a slimmer look, though that isn’t for everyone,” says Billy, whose lines at the Toggery include Hart Schaffner Marx, Jack Victor, and the shop’s own custom work. “But we’re starting to see a return to looser styles, and single-pleated pants are coming back. Most men are still looking for something fitted, but we can achieve both looks.”

Double-breasted suits? “They’re on the verge of a comeback,” Billy notes. “And some men still like cuffs, which were originally designed to weigh down the leg of the pants. They’re not as popular with a slimmer pants profile, although they’re synonymous with pleats.” There’s a growing trend for wearing suits without a tie, which raises the question of whether there are certain styles that work better with the open-collar look. Billy doesn’t think so, remarking that “any suit can be worn without a tie.” But if you’re not wearing one, he suggests, “wear a nice pocket square instead,” to add a note of sportiness. Footwear, too, can take the look in different directions, with options such as white-soled shoes, or dress sneakers. “You can have a lot of fun dressing a suit up or down,” says Billy.

As for who’s driving the men’s fashion conversation these days, Billy suggests taking a look at what sports figures are wearing when they step out of uniform. “Guys from the NFL, NHL, and Major League Baseball, and sports commentators, dress up to appear on TV. Men watch, and get fashion ideas.” When it’s time to really get serious, the custom shop at Bill’s Toggery is ready to handle whatever style suits a gentleman’s taste. With a broad selection of fabrics, and a full-time tailor on staff, the shop can expertly fit men in all shapes and sizes. “The shop works with clients ranging from executives to wedding parties – we outfit grooms and groomsmen, and we’ve been making a lot of tuxedos,” says Billy. “More and more men are buying their wedding outfits. You get a lot of value from buying a suit or tux for a wedding, rather than renting.” Thinking of having a suit or tux custom made? Billy advises giving the shop about six weeks for first fittings to finished product. It can be done in three to four weeks, “but we don’t like to take less time than that.” Bill’s Toggery, of course, is about a lot more than suits. Billy reminds clients that “sportswear is still a big part of our business.” The Toggery’s extensive inventory includes shirts, casual slacks, sport jackets, sweaters, pullovers, accessories and more, from upscale brands like Johnnie-O and 7Diamond. For dress shirts, look for carefully crafted offerings from David Donahue. Bugatchi is known for its contemporary-styled shirts in an eight-way stretch mercerized cotton, available in a range of contemporary styles. Jeans, too, get special attention, with the 34 Heritage line crafted from a denim fabric that’s a cut above the ordinary, woven for superior fit and wear qualities.

“More and more men are buying their wedding outfits. You get a lot of value from buying a suit or tux for a wedding, rather than renting.”

In a footwear department strong in both dress and casual styles, “we carry Johnston & Murphy, Florsheim, and, at the higher end, Martin Dingman,” says Billy. A recent addition to the Toggery shelves is the line of shoes, sandals, and slippers by Hawaii-based OluKai. Both Martin Dingman and OluKai offer a wide selection of those suit-sprucing white-soled dress sneakers Billy mentioned above. “Our

shoe collection,” he reminds clients, “is a nice complement to our clothing lines.” Getting back to my own closet – where several of those suits I wore years ago still linger, on hangers from long-gone haberdashers – I was glad to hear about past styles making a reappearance. Maybe I’ll take one of those suits out … though I’d probably have to have it taken out. On second thought, it might be time for a visit to Bill’s Toggery.

RESIDENTIAL HEATING Serving the Twin Cities Since 1991

& AIR CONDITIONING 24

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | HO ME SE RVICE S

“FEW HVAC SERVICES COMBINE THE EXPERIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY NEEDED TO EXCEED ECO-CONSCIOUS HOMEOWNERS’ HIGHEST EXPECTATIONS. RESIDENTIAL HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING, OF COURSE, IS EXCEPTIONAL.” It’s not an HVAC system. It’s a life support system: those all-important machines which save you from freezing or roasting to death on this Spaceship Earth. Who will you choose to service your life support system? A national conglomerate, which might report a weaker-than-expected Q4 if the entire state of Minnesota were to suddenly disappear overnight? Or will you choose one of the largest family-owned and -operated local businesses of its kind, where common sense and courtesy still call the shots? “I’ve never had any doubt about the Golden Rule. It applies everywhere, all the time,” said Chris Kallstrom. “When I co-founded Residential Heating & Air Conditioning in Eden Prairie back in 1991, I determined to always treat my team and our clients like I myself want to be treated. That decision is a large part of the reason why Residential now has 18 of the most talented and dedicated HVAC professionals in the Twin Cities (not including Sugar, our shop cat), plus a roster of more than 100,000 customers requesting up to 500 house calls each month. “Unfortunately, the Golden Rule is becoming an increasingly fringe business strategy nowadays. Wall Street winds up owning most of the businesses that grow to our size. That means their profits must come before everything else; quality, customer experience, and employee satisfaction all turn into sacrifices to the almighty dollar.” “You always know who you’re speaking with when you call Residential,” said Dione Kallstrom, co-owner. “If that’s not me or my husband Chris, then it will be with any one of our long-time employees. Many of them have been with us for decades because they share our commitment to treating people right.

“They’re also here because they take great pride in their work, and insist on installing the best technology. Residential grants their wish thanks to Carrier and Daikin: the two manufacturers we identified as best in class after almost 35 years in business. Their customer service is also top-notch, and their products are unmatched in reliability and efficiency yet remarkably affordable in light of that fact (even more so when rebates are available, which is often the case). “Nothing exemplifies our high standards better than our partnership with Lowe’s. They are exacting, having required spotless background checks and proof of technical skill from everyone on our team – as well as glowing references, reviews and referrals – before they would so much as consider hiring us to perform HVAC installations for their own valued customers. I’m proud to say we now do all such installations for eight of the nine Lowe’s stores in Minnesota.” “Our clients’ expectations for their HVAC systems have changed dramatically over the past few decades,” said Chris. “They want to minimize their carbon footprint like never before. We deliver by installing furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, mini-splits and other appliances which exceed EPA standards, and by recycling virtually every gas and metal we remove from their homes. They also want complex zoning systems, which have the double benefit of increasing comfort and reducing energy consumption. Few operations combine the experience and technology required to exceed those eco-conscious homeowners’ expectations – but Residential, of course, is exceptional.” “Indoor air quality has also become hugely important to our clients in recent years,” said Dione. “We often incorporate air cleaning technology into their smart HVAC systems, such as ultraviolet lights

which eradicate biological contaminants within air ducts, ion plasma devices which neutralize almost all kinds of airborne pollutants, and air scrubbers which do even more to eliminate allergens and unpleasant odors. “Improving your indoor air quality has the added effect of making your HVAC system run more efficiently, which means even less energy consumption – not to mention massively reduced wear and tear on all its moving parts.” “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” added Chris. “Making your HVAC system’s job easier can help avoid an emergency. So too can regular maintenance, which our maintenance program makes stress-free and affordable. But at the end of the day, nothing can guarantee perfect reliability. That’s why our NATE-certified technicians are always at your service. It doesn’t matter if you need us to save Christmas morning or your big Fourth of July party. Just give us a call and we’ll come running!”

“I came to QC Kinetix about four or five months ago. At that time I could hardly walk; I couldn’t walk up and down stairs, I couldn’t ride a bike, and I couldn’t dance. Last night I danced. I’m walking, I’m back on weight machines, and I’ve only had about four or five treatments.” – Boddy S., Knee Pain “I went to an ortho doctor and decided surgery wasn’t going to be my option. I took a chance and came to QC Kinetix. I had my last procedure today and I have no shoulder pain at the moment. I look forward to strengthening myself over the coming months.” – Tate P., Shoulder Pain “I came to QC Kinetix because of pain in both of my knees. My orthopedic doctor told me there was nothing more they could do. They told me I just needed to limit my exercise. I did not want to limit my exercise, as I really loved my gym. So I decided to try QC Kinetix. After a series of shots, I am back to doing my deep squats like I have always been.” – Lisa B., Knee Pain “I came in for hand and spine issues. I’m on my third treatment, and when I came today I was already 85 or 90 percent better.” – Dan N., Back Pain Maybe it happened after a lifetime of hard work. Maybe it happened due to a mishap on the court. Maybe it was the inevitable outcome of a life well lived. But regardless of its source, it is terrifying: something which might never go away, and will vacuum the joy out of everything. It’s joint pain.

One out of five Americans have it. Roughly as many are hesitant to treat it through conventional methods. Pills that stupefy and addict. Surgery followed by lengthy recovery. Either prospect is enough to make you wish there were a better way. There is. It’s called “regenerative medicine,” in which a specialist draws some of your own blood, concentrates all the healing agents therein, and injects the elixir precisely where it can do the most good. Ligaments. Tendons. Cartilage. Regenerative medicine restores every soft tissue joints need to move freely and painlessly. Its effects aren’t instant, but after a couple of visits, you’ll most likely wish you’d visited QC Kinetix sooner. “Our five regenerative medical clinics in Burnsville, Chanhassen, Fridley, Maple Grove and Maplewood have treated over 950 patients in the Twin Cities since 2022,” said Josh Means, who owns Twin Cities QC Kinetix alongside his wife Pam. “College students who played too hard. Tradespeople who can’t spare a minute for rehab or recovery. Seniors who had given up hope of taking their lives back from arthritis. We help people of all ages and from walks of life here at QC Kinetix, and welcome you to discover why the best treatment for joint pain is already inside you. “Whether you want to get back to work, get back on the golf course, or get back to chasing your grandkids, QC Kinetix is here for you!” QC Kinetix’s nearest location to Eden Prairie is located at 7770 Dell Road, Suite 130 in Chanhassen. TAP 2025 ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER The best of Minnesota brewing returns to Downtown Shakopee on Saturday, September 13th. It’s TAP 2025: the city’s fourth annual craft beer tasting and innovation showcase, featuring a record 43 breweries from all over the state! “TAP has turned Shakopee into an important destination for Minnesotan craft brewers,” said Michael Kerski, director of planning and development for the city. “In addition to serving one-of-a-kind beers (and non-alcoholic beers) they brewed just for TAP, brewers look forward to fraternizing with fellow entrepreneurs from FounderyMN.”

36

H AP PY H OU R | ENTERTA IN ME N T

To brewers, TAP is also friendly competition. “Guests are encouraged to vote for whichever brewery they would like to win the People’s Choice Awards,” explained Michael. “There’s a lot at stake with $750 for first place, $500 for second, and $250 for third!” To guests, TAP is just a good time. Up-and-coming local musicians begin playing on the main stage at 1pm, and OG ZAZA Pizza, O’Brien’s Public House, and Bravi’s Craft Mexican Kitchen food trucks will all be present to serve the only thing that is just as good as beer (i.e. food).

Saturday, September 13th, 1-5pm Lewis Street, Downtown Shakopee To Shakopee, TAP continues two proud civic traditions. “Beer is in our blood here in Shakopee,” Michael spoke figuratively. “We’ve been a major entertainment destination for as long as we have been a city. We’re also home to Rahr Malting Company: one of the last remaining family-owned malting companies, which has been in business since 1847. “As a city of innovation and entrepreneurialism, we are delighted to showcase so many Minnesotan-owned breweries – including our very own Mana Brewing and Shakopee Brewhall, plus Fat Pants of Eden Prairie – as well as Written Hugs Designs, Steelhead Outdoors, and several other promising businesses headquartered right here in town.”

TAP 2025 Visit TapShakopee.com to buy tickets! VIP admission ($55/person) opens at 1pm, and includes early access plus dedicated time to connect directly with brewers. General admission ($45/person) begins one hour later. (Must be 21 or older to attend; proof of age required.) Each ticket includes: • Souvenir tasting glass • Access to exclusive small-batch brews • Beer tastings from all participating breweries • Opportunity to explore several of the region’s most exciting emerging businesses TAP 2025 is hosted by the City of Shakopee Economic Development Authority, in partnership with eGrandstand.com, Shakopee Public Utilities, and the Shakopee Chamber and Visitors Bureau

COTTAGECARE house cleaning

LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED • SERVING EDEN PRAIRIE SINCE 1995 ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

40

H OU SE CA LL | LO CAL SE RVICE S

I’ve never enjoyed house cleaning. I think it all started when I was a little boy, irritated by the sound of my mother’s vacuuming while I was trying to watch Muppet Babies. But that was only a prelude to the actual emotional bruising, which began the day my mother first told me … to vacuum. And so I confess to allowing my beautiful home to get unkempt at times. Dust bunnies. Dirt bunnies. Grease bunnies. The red crescents which mark every place I’ve poured wine. Barbarically unchopped couch cushions. I know I should address these more often, yet I have too many better things to do, and too little time to do them in, and elbow pain.

THAT’S WHY I CHOOSE COTTAGECARE HOUSE CLEANING

No contracts. No rescheduling fees. No noxious chemicals. Just stress-free and fully tailored floor-to-ceiling professional cleaning that will leave your home spotless. You’ll finally be free to do something you enjoy better than house cleaning, such as anything. “At the heart of it, that’s what house cleaning is all about,” said John Sulciner, owner of CottageCare House Cleaning Eden Prairie/Bloomington. “We’re here to make life better every way we know how. “That starts the moment you call (952) 944-8020 for an instant quote. There’s no hemming and hawing or sales tactics; only a quote, based on a short description of your home and its cleaning needs. If those needs wind up being more extensive than you described, then no worries! We’ll still honor our quote. After 18 years in the business, we’ve only had to upcharge on a few occasions. “Our goal isn’t to lock our customers into contracts, or nickel and dime them whenever they have to reschedule. We know that life happens, and are happy to stand by whenever our weekly, biweekly, monthly, one-time, or vacancy/move-in cleaning services aren't needed. That flexibility is one of the reasons why CottageCare is so popular among snowbirds, spontaneous travelers, and families that have a million different things going on at any given moment. “This franchise has kept many of its original clients from when it first started out. Several of them have purchased over 1,000 cleanings during that time! “None of those people would have continued choosing CottageCare were it not for our consummate cleaning services, of course. I’m careful only to hire people who are passionate about cleaning; who take real pride in making living spaces not just fresh, but beautiful; who are members of the same community we’re so honored to serve, just like I am. We have 172 different items on our home cleaning checklist, which cover everything right down to the way we fold the end of each toilet paper roll. It takes a rare kind

of enthusiasm to do such detailed work, but our pros all have it in spades. “Our clients aren’t the only ones who love our flexibility. Many of our pros are working moms and college students who greatly value rewarding work which they can so easily fit into their schedules. I certainly appreciated it while I was raising my own three kids. That was one of the main reasons I was drawn to CottageCare all the way back in 2008, when certain economic events led to the expiration of my luxury floor covering company. “I was also attracted to C o t t a g e C a r e ’s commitment not just to the local community, but to the world at large. We’re proud to have exclusively used eco-friendly cleaning products since the company’s foundation in 1988. You can rest and breathe easy when we’re doing the cleaning. We’re also passionate about our philanthropic work in Rwanda, where CottageCare provides food, housing, clothing, education and health care directly to widows and orphans.”

You’ll finally be free to do something you enjoy better than house cleaning, such as anything.

Showcase A Night Honoring Greatness in Eden Prairie Schools

EDEN PRAIRIE SCHOOLS AND ITS FOUNDATION INVITE YOU TO THE FIRST EAGLE EXCELLENCE SHOWCASE France has the Panthéon. Hollywood has its Walk of Fame. Baseball has Cooperstown. And now Eden Prairie Schools has its very own Hall of Fame, which will make its grand debut during the inaugural Eagle Excellence Showcase to be held on the evening of Saturday, October 4th at the district’s new Valley View Campus.

EDU CAT ION COR N E R | ED U CAT ION

“The Hall of Fame will pay tribute to Eden Prairie Schools’ distinguished alumni and retired staff, as well as others who made significant contributions to our community or attained admirable levels of success in business, leadership, academia, activities, or public service,” said Liz Dayton, gifted programming coordinator for Intermediate District 287 and Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS) chair. “It’s a celebration of the great people who’ve helped make our city and its schools … well, great!” Among mingling, food and drink, and an auction in support of FEPS’ work, the Eagle Excellence Showcase will honor the first class of inductees to the Eden Prairie Schools Hall of Fame, as well as celebrate the 2025 Legacy Award winners: staff, volunteers, and community members who have been recognized by FEPS for their outstanding contributions to the Eden Prairie Schools community. A reimagining of the FEPS Red & Black Gala that formerly honored their awardees – now combined with the new Hall of Fame ceremony – the Showcase will be an inviting evening of Eagle Excellence. “The Eagle Excellence Showcase will be a wonderful opportunity for guests to connect with former classmates and current students, discover the amazing things Eden Prairie Schools has been up to recently, and salute the first inductees to the Hall of Fame,” said Liz. “We hope to see you there!" DO YOU LOVE PAYING TAXES? THEN YOU’LL LOVE NORDQUIST TAX & BUSINESS SERVICES!

Picture this. You have to pay the government a whole heap of money – how much, specifically, is a mystery to you – and you would rather be dunked in hot tar than do math or fill out government forms. You hire an inexperienced tax preparer: an amusing caricature of a young person, who uses slang like “no cap” and has never not been on a cell phone. “Bet, Mr./Ms. Magazinereader,” he assures you (or so you believe). “Your tax return slaps and is heckin’ valid. No cap. Just yeet these papes at the IRS and you’ll be skibidi.” But things do not go skibidi at all (or so you believe). It turns out the inexperienced tax preparer prepared your taxes by haphazardly plugging numbers into a spyware app that he heard about through TikTok, and you now owe the People's Republic of China $72 million dollars. Whoops! Oh well. It’s not like all of that would have been avoided if you had instead floated across Nordquist Tax & Business Services’ vast sea of experience during your tax preparation journey. Now here’s the plot twist: IT ACTUALLY WOULD HAVE. CONTINUED >

“I don’t require every federally authorized IRS Enrolled Agent who works here to be quite as experienced as I am,” said Vickie Nordquist, who began preparing taxes shortly after earning her accountancy degree from U of M over 30 years ago. “That being said, I can’t take someone who’s still fresh out of school, either. They’re too just green for our clients’ good. “Take my own daughter, for example. I love her very much, and I’m delighted that she’s now working for me part-time, but I told her right up front that Nordquist Tax & Business Services would never help her get her foot in the door. ‘Go work for one of my competitors for at least a year before you even think about working for me,’ I explained to her when she was first starting out. ‘Tax expertise isn’t passed down genetically, and the IRS won’t care when you tell them who your mom is.’ “Knowing what’s deductible and by how much. All the little software tricks needed to interpret tax code as generously in your client’s favor as possible. Knowing precisely what the IRS is looking for, and how to minimize the chances of that becoming more of your client’s money. School can’t teach you these crucial things. You have to learn them ‘on the streets,’ so to speak. “And it takes a long time indeed until you’re able to give your client what they want most during tax season: peace of mind. They may not know thing one about taxes, but they’ll know right away if they’re working with an amateur. Only a seasoned tax professional answers questions, explains strategies, and identifies solutions with that rare, cool confidence which makes their client feel truly protected – if not outright invincible – against the IRS.”

The Made-With-Love Directory

Matt Rosen

The Cottage Foodie

There I was: listless, with nothing but bland, mass produced glop to eat. The cookies? Unremarkable. The cupcakes? Jejune. The salsas? Whatevs. The breads? Apparently baked for the sole purpose of disappointing me. I determined to savor something made with love – by a real person, in a real kitchen, instead of by people who hate working at a factory. Not ex machina, but from the heart, like all good food must be.

54

LOCA L’S CH OICE | FO O D + BE VE RAGE

Sassyfras Cookies

“I spent the past seven years as a cottage food producer – at first working out of my home, and then in a small commercial kitchen,” recounted Matt. “I also became an active member of the Minnesota Cottage Food Producers Association during that time, and even advocated for my fellow cottage food producers before the Minnesota Legislature. “Over the course of all that involvement, I noticed something was severely lacking: a directory containing information for every cottage food producer in the country. I believe nothing could promote small business and connect people to their local culinary landscapes more effectively than such a tool!” CONTINUED >

Pieway to Heaven

In other words, I determined to eat…

COTTAGE FOODS (I.E. NON-POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS FOODS WHICH ARE PREPARED IN A RESIDENCE AND NOT SUBJECT TO LICENSING OR OFFICIAL INSPECTION)

This begged the question: Where do I turn to? I’m far too busy writing scintillating magazine articles to travel to different farmers’ markets each weekend. My neighbors no longer set pies down to cool on their window sills after all that stuff they accuse me of doing happened. I’m only marginally good at baking despite having graduated top of my class from Culinary Arts Academy Switzerland and previously working as head baker for multiple Michelin three-star restaurants. I’d given up nearly all hope of tasting true joy until I spoke with a most remarkable man – one who just so happens to purchase advertising in this very magazine. He is Matt Rosen, the Army-veteran-turned-baker who founded Sergeant Shortbread in 2018 (going to SergeantShortbread. com and purchasing Matt’s indescribably good shortbreads for special occasions or to give away as gifts is always advisable), and as of last year the founder of The Cottage Foodie as well. Matt’s a doer. Instead of supposing that a “Yellow Pages for cottage food producers” would be a good idea and leaving it there, he made it a reality with the help of LTR Digital Group (a fellow member of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce, like all good businesses are). Now any cottage food producer can sign up, advertise whatever they like on their profile, and greatly extend the reach of their social media while they’re at it. “TheCottageFoodie.com is still in its infancy, but it already has 140 members across 24 states,” said Matt. “While most of those are in Minnesota, every day takes us closer to becoming a nationally recognized online directory. “The Cottage Foodie is not about profiting off of other cottage food producers’ hard work. It’s about promoting it, and celebrating it, and creating a larger market for it, and turning more good, creative, downto-earth people into successful entrepreneurs.”

COTTAGEFOODIECON

“But that’s not enough,” Matt continued. “I also want to help aspiring and recently established producers learn the business side of cottage food. That’s why I founded CottageFoodieCon: an annual convention dedicated to supporting and empowering small-scale food entrepreneurs operating under cottage food laws, which will be held for the first time this April 23rd through 25th at Hennepin Technical College’s Eden Prairie campus. “Other cottage food conventions exist, but they’re all dedicated to one type of product – something I only realized while returning from a sugar cookie convention I attended in Reno last year. In addition to showcasing every type of product, CottageFoodieCon will offer attendees instruction on networking, pricing, search engine optimization,

developing a brand on a tight budget, and every other trick of the trade a cottage food producer needs on their path toward success.” Would you like to join the exciting world of cottage food production? Or have you already dipped your toe in those particular waters, and now want to present your product to other cottage food entrepreneurs, hobbyists, educators, and supporters at the CottageFoodieCon 2026 Vendor Marketplace (which will be open to the public)? Then good things will happen to you when you visit CottageFoodieCon.com.

AND DON’T FORGET THE SHORTBREADS

Remember earlier when I advised visiting SergeantShortbread.com, where you can order crispity buttery cookie deliciousnesses that would cause you to curl your toes with delight if you ate them, and which just so happen to make especially nice client appreciation gifts? Well, what if I also told you that Sergeant Shortbread is already taking orders for the holiday season, which is an especially apt timespan to eat shortbreads within? Would you visit SergeantShortbread.com then? I sure hope so.

MADISON HOUSE INTERIORS CREATE YOUR SPACE

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER Paris. London. New York. Tokyo. Oskaloosa. These are the capitals of the interior design world, whose visionaries dream up life’s thrillingest settings. Hire any one of them and stand back in awe as they seemingly effortlessly – click – put the whole room together. Now, don’t get me wrong. I don’t need an interior designer. I elevated my living space to perfection the same day I discovered the mall kiosk that sells those weird lenticular posters which change depending on which angle they’re viewed from. You, on the other hand, almost certainly stand to gain from hiring an interior designer who hails from one of the aforementioned capitals of their industry. As fortune would have it, Sara Trosen offers her services right here in Eden Prairie.

60

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

“I grew up in a very small town in Iowa,” said Sara Trosen. “Not exactly the design capital of the world, if I’m being honest. I didn’t even know interior design could be a profession until college, when I discovered The Discovery Channel.” The cathode ray tube lighted Sara’s path forward. She fell in love with the art and science of indoor adornment, and sensed a great talent for it welling up within her. Thus did she graduate from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a major in interior design and minor in construction management, work as an assistant and then a designer at Gabberts, join The Sitting Room design studio and boutique in Excelsior, and found Madison House Interiors in 2013. “After having my three kids, it was finally time to realize my dream of becoming my own boss,” said Sara. “There was never any option for me but to remain an interior designer. It’s just the way my brain works. It’s also what gives me the greatest contentment. To study a room or an entire home, and understand its residents’ hopes for it and their lifestyles, and visualize how it would look best, and bring that ideal to life? I do it all so naturally that I genuinely believe I was born for it.” And do it all, Sara does. Whether you enlist Madison House Interiors for a kitchen or bathroom redesign, a new plan for any number of rooms, or full-service white-glove interior design, it all begins with a brief consultation. “We’ll speak over the phone and then again in person – at your home, of course,” explained Sara. “We’ll go over all the details together: what works, what doesn’t, what you might want to keep, who’s using the space, and for what, and how? Do you have dogs; and if so, what is your stance on dogs on the furniture? I’m on an exhaustive fact-finding mission because my goal is to create living space you’ll truly love living in. “From there, it’s straight to the drawing board. I create floor plans and faithful 3D renderings, list out all the furniture and decor your dream space would have, and assemble fabric swatches and other samples to help illustrate my vision. If the project requires any labor (an electrician to install new lights, or a paperhanger, for example), then I’ll include that cost in the proposal as well.” Once you’ve given said proposal your blessing – or the few changes it needed to achieve absolute perfection – it’s on. “We’ll do it all in one fell swoop,” said Sara. “One big day (or maybe one big day and one not-so-big day if we’re reimagining your whole home) is all I need to change your perception of your space forever. “The reaction I’m going for is awestruck. In an instant, I want you to be blown away by my finely honed sense of functionality and fashion; that timeless, deceptively effortless style that has won Madison House Interiors so many lifelong clients.” There’s not enough lenticular posters in this town for the two of us. Visit MadisonHouseInteriors.com to learn how you can take a(n arguably) more tasteful approach to interior design, or call (612) 423-1130 to tell Sara how your day’s been.

SCHEELS Back to School Shopping, Per fected ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

THIS IS THE STORY OF SORRY BILLY

Sorry Billy’s parent/guardian was too busy reading uncouth non-Eden Prairie-themed magazines to remember to take him back-to-school shopping at SCHEELS. Billy had to make do with last year’s clothing and academic paraphernalia instead. Billy’s social life and education both became tragically hampered as a result of this. His schoolmate, Goose Elkins, issued a negative remark about Billy’s threadbare sweatshirt during lunch which elicited a protracted ribbing from “the guys.” Afterward, a torn seam on Billy’s backpack allowed sand to get lodged inside the grooves of his slide rule. The added friction impaired Billy’s ability to perform trigonometric functions, which would eventually lead to his becoming unemployable as an adult.

THIS IS THE STORY OF FORTUNATE FRANKIE

Fortunate Frankie’s parent/guardian had their act together. In addition to reading Eden Prairie Lifestyle, they also set aside time to take their son back-to-school shopping at SCHEELS. (Had they been blessed with a daughter instead of son, then they’d surely have doted over her just as warmly). Thus SCHEELS-ed, Frankie found himself adorned and equipped to go to school confidently. He won the admiration and respect of his peers and teachers. He excelled athletically and academically, finding equally rewarding company among jocks and nerds alike; like Ferris Bueller, albeit without cutting class. Frankie’s backpack, clothes, shoes, water bottle and sports equipment were all *so nice* that he won many state championships and received scholarships.

THIS IS BACK-TO-SCHOOL SHOPPING AT SCHEELS

“With a daughter going into fourth grade and a son going into sixth, I know what being on both sides of back-to-school shopping feels like,” said Amy Dahlquist, Eden Prairie SCHEELS assistant store leader. “You want everything all in one place. You want goods that will hold up and make their academic careers more enjoyable. And hey, let’s be honest: as a parent, you want your life’s greatest work to be seen out in public looking … you know … good. CONTINUED >

“It always begins with a backpack – something that has to be equal parts comfortable, durable, stylish, and functional. It may sound funny if you’re only familiar with their work pants, but Carhartt makes an excellent school backpack. Their backpacks are deceptively spacious with lots of compartments, and also have that clean, simple aesthetic that’s so popular these days. They even have special pockets to keep tablets and laptops safe. “This year’s hottest footwear brand might be one you haven’t heard of before; a little company called ‘Nike.’ Their Air Jordans, which are named after the greatest basketball player ever to have lived, will probably always be the most desired style of tennis shoe (or basketball shoe, to be more accurate, I suppose). I don’t know if the Nike Air Max pays tribute to some sports legend named ‘Max’ whom I’m unaware of; but if it does, then his shoes are right up there in popularity, too. “On and Birkenstock are both shaping up to be big again this year as well. Kids especially love On shoes’ holey outsoles, which are 100 percent guaranteed to make them run faster (in addition to a couple of years of track and field). Birkenstocks are great if your kid is chasing that late ‘60s Greenwich Village vibe, or just wants an extremely comfy and fashionable pair of sandals.

“UNRL, a local athleisure brand we’re especially proud to promote, makes the end-all back-to-school hoodie. It’s the Crossover Hoodie: the perfect blend of fit and comfort, which really pops with a little extra flare and somehow manages to be lightweight yet cozy. “I’d no sooner have taken a water bottle to school than I would have my dad’s outboard motor, but today’s youth have higher standards for hydration over yesteryear’s. While Stanley is still a big deal, other great brands belong on your radar. Our customers are currently loving Owala’s easy-to-use and easy-on-the-eyes water bottles, and HydroJug’s leak-proof tumblers have a good shot at becoming this school year’s most voguish drinking vessels. “And finally, there’s that one thing all academia revolves around: sports! This may go without saying, but if your kid needs sporting goods – hockey pads, football cleats, baseballs, or even an EGO POWER+ battery-powered 65-foot-pound torque ice auger – then the Twin Cities’ largest sporting goods store has them covered!” SCHEELS is conveniently located next to the Dairy Queen/Orange Julius Treat Center at Eden Prairie Center. E DE N p ra i r i e MON T E S S OR I ’ S A N N UA L PIC N IC Around 200 babies and toddlers and preschoolers and kindergarteners and parents and Eden Prairie Montessori staff gathered at Round Lake Park on June 11th from 4 until 7 o'clock. Their goal? Picnicking. Their luck? Mixed. Late afternoon rain drove lovers of dryness to the protective non-confines of the pavilion, but relented in time to allow copious evening frolicking. Hot dogs. Hamburgers. Veggie burgers. Six whole watermelons. None were safe from the merrymakers, who potlucked like the gods of Olympus. Round Lake Park is a place where kids go bazooey. They performed acrobatic feats on playground equipment, learned the true meaning of soakedness at the splashpad, and chased each other slippingly across damp grass. One colossal playdate for everyone attending either location of Eden Prairie’s lovingest day care. “Hosting our annual picnic is always a joy,” said Shonali Harrison, director. “The parents seem happy to skip a night of cooking. The children make no secret of the delight they find in each other’s company. And reuniting with our current students’ older siblings, who we may not have seen for so many years? Oh my gosh. My babies are all growing up!”
