LIFESTYLE LETTER

Positively Oozing With Gratitude

November 2026 PUBLISHER

John Lee | john.lee@citylifestyle.com P U B L I CAT I O N D I R E C TO R

David Scheller | david.scheller@citylifestyle.com

Dear Eden Prairie Lifestyle reader,

INTERN

Gratitude. My Oxford English Dictionary, which comprises 20 volumes and weighs 137 pounds, informs me that it means “the quality or condition of being grateful.” Let that sink in for a moment. The quality – or condition – of being grateful. Deep stuff, Mr. Oxford! And what does "grateful" mean, exactly? Ha! I don’t need to risk another hernia looking that one up, because it’s the way I feel constantly. The air I breathe. The wife I love. The cats who let me live in their house. The community I have the honor of furnishing with fine magazines. Steak. There isn't a thing I don't cherish! That raises the question: What are you supposed to do about it? I propose that you join me. This November (and, time permitting, December), try to be as thankful as humanly possible for literally everything in your life. This is easier to do after all the biting insects have died. Not sure how to start? Here is a helpful exercise you can do. It came to me in a dream. Go to your fridge, open it, observe all its contents, and express a little personal gratitude toward each in turn. “Thank you, Mr. Mustard. You are never mean, and John Lennon can’t convince me otherwise. Thank you, Ms. Enormous Jar of Dill Pickles. Though your pickles are too soft for my liking, take comfort that future generations might someday enjoy them. And thank you, Senator Ranch Dressing. Without you, I’d have no other way of making my salads covered in you.” See? Gratitude is just that easy. Express it freely and often, and you may just realize palpable health benefits such as reduced stress, improved heart function, and a stronger immune system. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even live long enough to watch as Eden Prairie Lifestyle grows into Ecumenopolis Lifestyle, which mails direct to all 463 billion people living in mile-high cube cities distributed evenly across the globe. Wouldn’t that be something? As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. They’re the best!

Twin Cities barbecue appreciators speak of Baker’s Ribs in hushed voices. They don’t want word of their favorite restaurant to get out, lest they might have to wait so much as one second longer for proprietor Al Killion’s rapturous ribs, succulent sausages, peerless pulled pork, and choice chicken. “If anything were to come between me and my Baker’s Ribs brisket, I’d go ape,” said one randomly selected Baker’s Ribs patron. “Just as surely as Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s quotes are 100 percent authentic, I love Baker’s Ribs and hope it remains obscure for that reason,” said another. But you know what? Those barbecue gatekeepers can’t stop us from loudly singing Baker’s Ribs’ deserved praises – or sharing crucial information pertaining to this holiday season.

BAKER’S RIBS SMOKES WHOLE TURKEYS AND HAMS

Eating festive turkeys and hams? SIGN YOU UP. Cooking the same? COUNT YOU OUT. Entrusting your all-important family feasts to a real Texas pitmaster? Well, that's just smart thinking, right there. Baker’s Ribs doesn’t cook whole turkeys and hams. The restaurant swaddles them in oak smoke and low, steady, even heat for hours upon hours, sealing in their savory juices whilst imbuing them with an earthly sweet essence. Serve either (or ideally both) to your dinner guests, and watch their minds implode – with flavor.

And your main course won’t be alone. Baker’s Ribs’ side dishes, which are too good to be listed anywhere other than in their own separate sidebar, are available to make it a full meal. DON’T DILLYDALLY! This magazine hit your mailbox at the best possible time for ordering Thanksgiving turkey (or ham). For Christmas ham (or turkey), you’re advised to order by the first week of December. Visit BakersRibsMN.com to learn and order, call (952) 942-5337 to speak, or dine at 8019 Glen Lane, Eden Prairie!

SERGEANT SHORTBREAD Merae Meek: Reporting for Cookie Duty

A hibiscus-yellow sun sets Hawaii aglow. Matt Rosen, newly retired from the United States Army, vacations in the glow with his family. Matt’s wife Sara entreats him to enter a bakery. Doing so requires little entreating on her part. Inside, Matt eats a most miraculous thing: a crispity, buttery, splendiferous thing. He can’t place its flavor at first. But upon deeper investigation, it dawns on him.

Mountains of sugar and flour. Fountains of vanilla extract. Stick upon stick of Dairyland’s best. Upon returning home to Eden Prairie, Matt enlists them all in his self-appointed quest to perfect the nonpareil shortbread. He succeeds. Then he enterprises. Two neatly cut halves of a ribbon flutter down to either side of Bakerz Dozen (later Sergeant Shortbread) in 2018. The shortbread-loving world rejoices! Families. Restaurants. Breweries. Churches. Companies in need of actual, appreciatable gifts for their clients and staff.

For eight straight years, Matt knocks their socks off with reason-defyingly delicious treatsies. But suppose shortbreads aren’t Matt’s true calling. Suppose they were only the vet’s entry point to his real raison d'être. “My greatest passion is now cottage foods, as a whole,” said Matt. “That’s why I recently founded the National Cottage Food Alliance; a chamber of commerce, of sorts, which aids cottage food producers through education, economic support, and advocacy. “Entrepreneurs who prepare goods in their home kitchens for direct sale to the public have a tough road ahead of them. Our nonprofit organization and its board of directors are here to give them every advantage we can. We offer monthly seminars to our members, and host CottageFoodieCon right here in Eden Prairie so they can learn even more about the business side of their art. We partner with vendors to get members sizable discounts on ingredients and other supplies. We’re also pushing for legislation that will make cottage foods a more lucrative hobby – or full-blown business – nationwide. For example, here in Minnesota, cottage food producers still aren’t allowed to ship their own goods to their customers!” Does Matt’s new occupation leave too little time for campaigns of mass baking? It does.

Does that mean life-alteringly tasty shortbreads are no longer part of the picture? Far from it. “Sergeant Shortbread wasn’t conceived as a way to cash out,” said Matt. “I knew from the onset that I’d rather shutter it than sell to someone who doesn’t genuinely love shortbread, or share my same steadfast support for our military and veterans. That looked to be the case, until one fateful delivery.” “God put me in Matt’s path for a reason,” said Merae Meek, kitchen manager for Grace Church. “We got to chatting while he was delivering shortbreads to Grace Cafe. He mentioned he’d been thinking about closing up shop. Almost right away, I asked him: Would you consider selling?

Matt Rosen and Merae Meek

“I appreciate everything about Sergeant Shortbread. The shortbreads – small, light, nice, and filling – are, naturally, the star of the show. I’ve brought more flavors home to share with my husband than I can recall (Blueberry Lemon is my favorite). That I’ll be baking them alongside my 13-year-old granddaughter, who once asked me if I could buy her a bakery someday? Sounds like the right kind of retirement in my book! “I love Sergeant Shortbread’s support for the military just as much. My son is a former enlisted Marine, and I would have joined the Armed Forces myself if not for my health. Matt’s service to Every Third Saturday, which assists Minnesota veterans in finding new purpose, set a wonderful precedent for what I expect to do moving forward. “I already send letters and care packages to our troops, and have previously welcomed new recruits to stay in my home until one of the Marine Corps’ boot camps was ready for them. I plan to begin sending troops shortbreads as well! And later down the line, I also hope to start baking natural, wholesome dog treats for the German Shepherd rescue I volunteer with. (They’re not veterans, but they are very, very cute.)” “Merae won’t go it alone,” said Matt. “She’ll have every recipe I spent eight years fine-tuning, and I’ll consult for her until she’s mastered every step of my process. For example, kneading the dough to perfect consistency is an artform that can only be done through skilled touch. I won’t share my trade secrets with Eden Prairie Lifestyle, though. You guys didn’t buy Sergeant Shortbread!” Now Merae’s at her oven, baking fresh shortbreads in the Rosen tradition. Her granddaughter is at her side; her patriotically decaled Pontiac, in her garage awaiting the next round of deliveries. A pair of German Shepherd noses just outside study the incredible sensation emanating from her house. Sergeant Shortbread marches on. Holidays are coming, and Sergeant Shortbread has already seamlessly transitioned ownership. Order any number of cookies for any number of people (or all for yourself) today! SergeantShortbread.com

What Home Improvements are actually worth the money? I can help you weigh your options My answer to this question depends. If you're selling relatively soon, I’d look for the updates that will change a buyer's perception of the home. Buyers notice when a home feels clean and well maintained. If you’re planning to stay awhile then I say make it what you want. I can certainly help guide you here with some great contractors and designers. THERE’S NO TIME FOR PODIATRY LIKE AUTUMN Don’t get us wrong. EVERY season is a great one for foot care. But autumn? It’s full of wet, slippery leaves: a leading cause of ankle sprains and fractures. And if you’re planning a hike or a particularly grueling trip to the pumpkin patch, then you’ll thank your lucky stars for podiatry if Achilles tendonitis sets in. CASTLE DECK Deck Building, Remodeling, and Restoration Fit for Royalty

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

30

H OM E U P DAT E | HO M E + D E SIGN

According to Google, the most expensive yacht in the world is owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. It is 533 feet long, worth a cool $1.5 billion, and pretty nice. No amount of research, however, reveals whether or not Abramovich has a deck in his backyard.

Does that necessarily mean he hasn’t got one? If you don’t go muddying up your reasoning by applying logic to everything you read, it does. And it also means one more thing. You can have it even better than a billionaire. You can live like royalty, no less. All you need is Castle Deck. “The contracting business is fiercely competitive,” said Alex Corbin, proprietor of Corbin Restoration & Construction. “You’ll never stand out unless you’re truly outstanding. That was one of the first lessons I learned after following in my dad’s footsteps to become an entrepreneur.” It was an auspicious lesson for Alex, who espouses the old-fashioned and increasingly rare Build It the Right Way, Once mentality. It drove him to grow his business into one of the top 10 percent of contractors in Minnesota, with five stars to show for its 185 Google reviews. “I enjoy building decks most of all,” said Alex. “I founded Castle Deck for that purpose alone – well,

that, and to provide my wife and children with the best quality of life and future as I’m able, of course. And at this point, it’s safe to say Castle Deck is a success on both fronts. We’ve currently got projects booked eight months in advance.”

SKILL

“Corbin Restoration & Construction has an amazing team of roofers, framers, remodelers, and other skilled subcontractors,” Alex continued. “None of them work for Castle Deck. Everyone on that team specializes in one thing and one thing only. I’ll let you guess which. They are also full-time employees; not subs. “Castle Deck’s 14 specialists share almost 100 years of combined experience between them. A lot of that comes from the seasoned pros, but not all of it. My latest hire is 19 years old – a young man after my own heart, who came to me not just because he wanted a job, but because he specifically wants to build decks. His resume? The beautiful wooden boat he built with his own two hands. CONTINUED >

“Is it ‘overbuilding?’ Yes! That’s exactly what I’d call it. We overbuild everything that we touch.”

“But at the end of the day, skill and enthusiasm aren’t everything. Our team members can spend up to a month on a larger project, so it’s important they always present themselves as consummate professionals. That means living up to our company culture, which values accountability, friendliness, and showing up early. We know our client is making a big investment in their most valuable possession, and we want them certain they’ve put their trust in the right team.”

QUALITY

“Our field manager has had to practically pull people off the job at the end of the day, solely because they didn’t want to stop working,” said Alex. “That’s the kind of drive that only comes from one

place: confidence you’re building a thing of permanence. “A lot of deck builders seek an advantage by expediting their process somehow, or using fewer or cheaper materials. Castle Deck is the only one I know of that does exactly the opposite. We're Pro Builder Certified with Joist Runner because we’ve yet to identify a better deck scaffolding system. Even so, we still install extra fasteners just to make double sure everything stays where it belongs. We build frames out of kiln-dried heat-treated lumber, which is as strong as it is resistant to warping. Our proprietary deck building system even includes its own special, patented tools to ensure zero undulation. We sell them to other builders who also refuse to deliver sagging, uneven, or wavy decks.

“Is it ‘overbuilding?’ Yes! That’s exactly what I’d call it. We overbuild everything that we touch – not just meeting every standard specified by our materials’ manufacturers, but surpassing them – and we back it all up with our industry’s best warranties.”

BEAUTY

“We build gorgeous decks: every bit as intricate as they are long lasting, which look like natural extensions of their surroundings – not afterthoughts. “We learn a lot during our initial consultation. That starts with the size and style of deck you would like, as well as the shape of your home and vibe of its backyard. We determine whether you might like to add a roof to your deck someday, or convert it to a three-season porch. FRANK E.

Nute,

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

Helping You Reach Your Financial Goals Ya know, Milo, in Florida they like to eat the claws of a certain species of crab … the stone crab… Each year, they catch millions of stone crabs, rip off just one of their claws and then toss them back in… The little crabs struggle to survive and grow back their stolen claw … only to get caught and have it yanked off again next year. If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m feeling a little like a stone crab myself! So spaketh Opus T. Penguin to his accountant in the great newspaper comic Bloom County. That raises the question you expected to have posed to you the instant you pulled this magazine out of your mailbox:

ARE YOU FEELING A LITTLE LIKE A STONE CRAB, TOO?

Then you don’t have to! Frank E. Nute, MS, CFE, CPA, CFF, CTRC, CGMA is here to keep you as whole as federal and state tax codes will allow. Are you currently being hounded by the IRS, whose views against IOUs are hostile at best? Has the taxman’s shadow never chilled your front door – a state of affairs you’d prefer to maintain? Do you run a business, and need the sound guidance you would receive from a CFO, but don’t have the kind of money you’d have to pay a CFO in order to get them to do anything more productive than drink Scotch and laugh at you? No matter! Frank has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1988, and at your service since founding his local accountancy firm in 2001.

TAX RESOLUTION

“The IRS has recently gone through a round of ‘tragic’ layoffs resulting in a one-quarter reduction of its staff,” said Frank. “Does that mean they won’t come after you if you’re one of around 19 million Americans who currently owes tax debt? I’m the last person in the world you would describe as a ‘gambler,’ but take it from me all the same: Don’t bet on it! “If the IRS or Minnesota Department of Revenue singles you out, you’re not alone. Decades of accountancy have made me fluent in their rules and procedures. Leveraging those to my clients’ advantage has become a matter of second nature to me. We’ll give them the good fight, and reach a much happier conclusion than if you had gone forth without representation.” Staying out of the taxman’s crosshairs is always the better course of action. If you need a CPA to keep your affairs candid, please refer to the title of this article.

CFO SERVICES

Optum. Starkey. UNFI. These and other fine colossi of local industry can all afford CFOs to help them deftly navigate the turgid seas of solvency. But none of those businesses is the best business in Eden Prairie. The pecking order goes like so: 1. Your business 2. Everyone else’s business Your business, however, is not quite at the CFO-hiring stage – yet. So what should you do in the meantime? Make impulsive (if not

outright rash) financial decisions based on astrological phenomena? That might work if you have enough crystals, although you’d be better advised to choose Frank. “Cash flow. Cost management. Growth strategy,” listed Frank. “If you own a small-tomedium business, then you ignore any of these at your peril. That’s why I enjoy providing fractional CFO services to aspiring industry leaders. I take great personal satisfaction from helping locally owned businesses reduce operating expenses, increase sales, and identify brand new paths toward financial success.”

FORENSIC ACCOUNTING

FIFTY BILLION DOLLARS. That’s how much money unscrupulous employees bleed from American businesses each year. Stealing your money is the IRS’s job. Don’t hire their competition! “If your employees sign checks, use credit cards, or have access to cash, then I guarantee there are safer ways you can begin conducting business,” said Frank. “I’m standing by to identify weak points before they can be exploited. I’ll pinpoint every conceivable opportunity employees have to commit fraud, and then help you put controls in place that eliminate them.”

FRANK DOES IT ALL

ANDERSON BUSINESS LAW DEALS. DISPUTES. CONTRACTS. LITIGATION. It doesn’t matter how good your business is. Fail to navigate these hurdles at your peril, because any one of them can send your enterprise crashing down. That doesn’t mean you need just a business attorney. You want a lawyer whose skills and experience have been honed to the extent that matches your need for effective legal strategies, and who will find the optimum path to a cost-effective solution – without the stodgy trappings and glacial infrastructure of a large traditional law firm. Meet David M. Anderson: founder of Minnesota’s first virtual business law practice, and your advocate and sherpa. “My grandfather spent 45 years working for the Milwaukee Road in Mobridge, South Dakota, before retiring and moving into a house next door to my family in Northern New Jersey,” David reminisced. “He grew restless, and began selling houses during an auspicious time for it: the height of the baby boom. “How did he become one of his agency’s top salesmen despite having arrived so late to the game? Because he would always have a stack of blank purchase agreements and a typewriter in his trunk every time he’d take a couple out to go look at houses. “My dad gave himself a similar advantage while running his Wheaton Van Line moving and storage business. He’d drive around the New York City suburbs in a black VW Beetle with a CB radio antenna sticking out of its sunroof. Whenever someone phoned his office for an estimate, he’d surprise them minutes later to do an estimate and get a signed contract. “Those examples were the seed crystals. They inspired me to strike it out on my own, and leverage fast-changing technology to become the first attorney I know of to go totally office-less. “My first job after law school was a choice judicial law clerkship, and a great opportunity to peek inside the machine. I worked closely with trial judges during many jury trials, getting their candid and sometimes surprising reaction to attorneys, learning their style and arguments, and seeing both great and mediocre trial attorneys in action. “My next position was at a six-person firm in Eden Prairie in 1983. We mostly did banking, commercial, and municipal law. That job gave me a great deal of trial experience, and confirmed what I’d already secretly known: I am a business lawyer at heart. My family background, plus a desire to find solutions efficiently and cost effectively, rejected the large-firm model of maximizing billable hours. In 45 years, I’ve never had a client call me up and say ‘Dave, I looked at your bill, and there aren’t enough billable hours on it.’ “When I ventured out on my own in 1989, I was armed with a cell phone, a digital pager, a stack of fancy business cards, and no office to weigh me down. Business owner clients don’t care about your office décor or the size of your law library. They want to know that you are accessible, responsive, and have the experience to get the job done in a cost-effective manner. This new model provided just the mobility and responsiveness I needed to resolve my clients’ issues faster than most old-school lawyers, who are typically shielded from clients by layers of secretaries and receptionists. “As email and the internet advanced and improved, so too did my ability to turn things around quickly. Whenever practicable, I was always tempering and streamlining my practice until it delivered precisely what each client required, exactly when they required it. Big law firms are analogous to the RMS Queen Mary. I am a high-speed cigarette boat.

42

L EGA L C OM PASS | FI NAN CE + LE GAL SE RVICE S

“Over almost five decades you cover most every type of legal matter, both in the litigation arena and in deals. In 2006 I handled the largest manufacturing and agriculture deal in Minnesota – totally virtually. It was a large and complex sale of my client’s business which made explosive bolts and missile parts for the U.S. Department of Defense, Great Britain, Israel, and other large defense clients. We had five teams of specialty attorneys, but still closed remotely, on time, and with a sale price $30 million over my client’s initial dream price. “Of course, I also handle more rudimentary and quotidian business deals, too. I just represented a client who had recently been diagnosed with a very serious medical condition. He was about to shut his whole operation down before I explained the informal reorganization that would eliminate his personal liability for multiple loans and claims. I crafted a solution that kept him in business another three years and eliminated most of his personal exposure. “Successful deals are another of my greater passions. Many of my clients are exiting the corporate world in pursuit of their own entrepreneurial dreams, and leverage my expertise to start their new ventures on the right footing. I shepherd them through the ordeal with as little stress, uncertainty, and headache as possible. Rather than trying to look smart by finding everything wrong with a deal, I look for every opportunity to make the thing work. If the best path forward isn’t immediately apparent, then we’ll make our own. “Deals, of course, aren’t just of importance to aspiring business owners. Established ones need to traverse a volatile mercantile landscape with confidence, too. Whether they’re a large corporation on the verge of a multi-million dollar transaction – or a small mom-and-pop shop planning an expansion into neighboring real estate – they can count on my acumen. "I don't engage in litigation lightly. That being said, the New Jersey street kid in me is always ready for it. Business litigation is like surgery in which there are two doctors. One does everything to save the patient. The other does the opposite. I am comfortable on either side of the operating table. “Whatever clients bring to me, I always endeavor to find the solution which is possible and cost effective, and provides the most financial bang for the legal buck possible. As a fellow business owner, I know we want results that move the business forward – not backward. “A business doesn’t have to be in the Fortune 500 to benefit from expert legal counsel. Most of my clients are in the $500,000 to $50 million range. Almost all are privately held, with the majority having one shareholder.” For contracts, commercial collections, sales and acquisitions, employment law issues, and every other business law challenge, you have Anderson Business Law. Call (952) 200-2460, email advokatdma@gmail.com, or visit eBizLaw.com. “I will call you back!” says David.

Pastor Juan Cuevas

“LORD, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds, LORD. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.” – Habakkuk 3:2 You grow up in the company of your peers. School surrounds you with contemporaries: friends, chums, cronies, acquaintances, and even the occasional meanie. Your life story’s dramatis personae are never fewer than an attendance sheet is long. And then comes that fateful day when you become so smart that you no longer need schooling. You leap out into the dim gray yonder in search of your place in the world. You find it, or it finds you, and you shortly realize you're nearly alone there. “I see it happen all the time,” said Pastor Juan Cuevas, director of young adults for Grace Church. “High school and college kids are usually pocketed comfortably inside a big friend group, and bedazzled by the endless opportunities lying before them. Then they graduate, and the community they once took for granted seems to dissipate overnight. “That, at its heart, is what The Co at Grace Church is all about. It’s the sense of belonging people in their 20s and 30s so often find themselves living without.” Pastor Juan is a spiritual specialist: a deliverer of the Word to young people. He joined the Campus Crusade for Christ (now Cru) while attending Washington State University, and continued working for his college church in the Pacific Northwest for 10 years before making his way to Grace Church of Eden Prairie. “Grace Church noticed my experience reaching Gen Z and millennials – two characteristically hard-to-reach generations,” said Pastor Juan. “The church leaders asked me to help launch a new ministry: The Co, which welcomed 375 believers in Christ to its inaugural service in September of last year.” The Co completely connected with the community its cofounders had contemplated accommodating. The crowds soon swelled beyond Grace Church’s lower-level auditorium’s ability to contain. Last June, The Co held service for a congregation of 855 in the main auditorium. Higher ground, indeed.

“Our mission is simple,” said Pastor Juan, omitting, in accordance with humility, to assign any credit for The Co’s meteoric growth to his relatability, impassioned preaching, or experienced spiritual leadership. “We’re here to reach and make disciples of young adults by building an authentic community, growing in faith, and pursuing Jesus together. We’re teaching the Word the way it has been successfully taught for thousands of years – the way that truly uplifts people – and it’s pulling them in by the hundreds. “The Co convenes every Tuesday beginning at 6:30pm. We spend the first half hour mingling. Saying hi to friends over snacks, and just catching up with each other. The service kicks off with a couple songs of worship; a chance to decompress and reconnect for a second. I (or someone else on staff ) then provides a 30-minute teaching taken straight from the Old or New Testament, focusing on real-world problems and their otherworldly solutions. We top it all off with a few more songs, but lots of people stick around to continue socializing after dismissal at 8pm. “Those who would like to stay are welcome to join small group discussions about the evening’s sermon. Co-ed and gender-segregated gatherings are both held from 8:15 until 9:15pm. They're a great opportunity to share what you learned that evening, as well as gain insight from others that might otherwise have escaped you.

THE CO Connected. Community. Committed. Counter culture. Co-heirs. Commissioned. What do they mean? Find out at The Co this coming Tuesday! Service begins at 6:30 and lasts until 8:00pm, with optional study groups available afterward. And remember: no matter your age, you’re perpetually invited to Sunday service at 9:00 and 10:40am. Visit Grace.church to learn more!

“ I t ’s t h e s e n s e of belonging people in their 20s and 30s so often find themselves l i v i n g w i t h o u t .”

“I love what I do, and it’s not just because younger adults are so much fun to be around, and fill up a room with such inspiring energy while they’re worshipping Jesus. I love them because there is a hunger inside of them. It's that agesold spiritual longing, which impels them to ask the big questions – the ones that have kept many great minds awake late at night. Who is God? How do I know Him? Is there something greater I can live for? “The younger generations are typically characterized as lonely and anxious. Sadly, that’s not unfair. The Information Age has alienated them from their increasingly atomized communities, and the pandemic era had an all the more disastrous effect on human relationships – both with each other, and with God. “The Co is breaking that norm. We’re welcoming everyone – everyone, barring those who are over the age of 39 – to come and discover an electrifying new environment where brothers and sisters in Christ sing, worship, and truly care for one other. “I’m reminded of a Bible verse, like pastors so often are. It’s Habakkuk 3:2 – a prayer from the titular prophet, imploring God to make Himself evident so that all might look past their crises and recognize His hand at work. It comes to mind because I truly believe God is doing just that here at The Co.”

KIRSTEN BEBO Celebrating Five Years With the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

in college, and was promoted to outreach director there,” said Kirsten Bebo, née Barott. “I began working with the chamber in nearby Volga soon after. That experience and my newly earned master’s degree helped me get my foot in the door at an advertising firm, which was trying to increase its footprint in Edina at the time.” Naturally, the trained chamberist’s first move was to volunteer at Edina’s chamber. There she let it be subtly known that she would very much like to work for a chamber; if not Edina’s, then perhaps one belonging to some other equally good city. “Somebody told me the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce was hiring,” said Kirsten. “It couldn’t have been a better fit! A sleepy farmtown turned cradle of industry, full of town pride, with a prestige I could sense even as a young girl looking up at that iconic water tower from the highway. “I’m not just grateful to Pat MulQueeny for bringing me on as relationship and events manager five years ago, and later promoting me to director of the same. I cannot imagine a better chamber president to shadow; one with almost three decades of experience, who has facilitated so much of his city’s growth, helped countless small businesses weather the troubles of 2020, and taught me the power of staying power in an industry notorious for high turnover. “I also thank Pat for letting me wear so many hats. On any given day I’m planning and hosting events, meeting with key stakeholders in businesses of all shapes and sizes, keeping tabs on local legislation, and, of course, serving our members. “They’re the best part of my job. Sometimes they only want a sympathetic ear. Sometimes they hope to connect with someone who could become their biggest client. Sometimes they haven’t yet met the person who can help ramp their business up to the next level, and just need that crucial introduction. I’m here for all of it! And I take satisfaction knowing that everything I do is part of ‘the rising tide that lifts all ships,’ as I like to put it. “Though I confess to loving organizing our events almost as much. Our Entrepreneurs Bootcamp, which teaches aspiring industry leaders everything they need to accelerate their journeys, is great. So too is our Of the Year Awards, where we celebrate the businesses and professionals that make Eden Prairie the golden

light of the southwest metro. But my favorite of all is the Everything Spring Expo, which has gradually evolved from a home, landscape and garden event into one that encompasses everything spring related. We recently added a farmers’ market and kids’ attraction, and will continue expanding the program every year. “I’ve watched both kinds of chambers in action. The ballsand-chains, which only hold their communities back; and the powerhouses, which do so much more than support local businesses. They have a ripple effect that attracts employers, opens new restaurants, increases tourism, keeps taxes lower, and, ultimately, puts more money in everyone’s pockets. “I have been blessed to work for a powerhouse – the powerhouse – for the past five years. Here’s to as many more as the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce will have me!” At the end of each day Kirsten returns to her home in the country, where she assists her family’s goat mitigation business, and denies any responsibility for her husband Alexander’s flock of 46 chickens. The farm girl. The farm. Never truly separated. EPChamber.org

Brâncuși. Calder. Mondrian. Dr. Seuss, H.P. Lovecraft, and even Pee-wee Herman to some degree, too. You might perceive all their influence in Peter’s work; poetry, which twists Plutonic permanence into fantastical forms. I envision Hephaestus stretching glowing-red ribbons out from his forge and letting them cool into Olympian taffy. “I got my start at a bronze foundry in Santa Fe,” reminisced Peter. “My mother, an opera singer, landed me a job there assembling and welding castings – primarily for Western and Native American art, as you might imagine, although those styles ultimately wouldn’t influence my own. “The foundry’s owner was a progressive guy, who welcomed his staff to stay and work on their own projects after hours. Moreover, he taught me a more practical approach to art than I probably would have learned in art school: that it’s first and foremost a business, where your client’s needs come above all else. When they want something specific, your job is to bend reality to their wishes. “Designers, homeowners and businesses all commission me to make custom pieces from copper, brass, or whichever other metal they have in mind. doors, and the like. Others are purely decorative, and perfectly complement whichever environment I tailor them to. So long as my client has some inkling of an idea of what they would like, I’ll sculpt it to life for them. “I do plenty of architectural work. I just recently made a copper gutter that had been designed by TEA2 Architects, and which won an award from the American Institute of Architects. I made a bronze mailbox for that project as well – a gorgeous, impressive thing which is only a little too small to be considered a guest house. “I am very proud to work for churches as well. If you’re a Catholic in Eden Prairie, then you may already have seen the crucifix I made for Pax Christi. I was raised Catholic myself, and to view Christ as the transcendent philosopher and ethicist. That’s why I’m always taken aback whenever I see Him depicted with the same physique as He-Man. I prefer a more realistic interpretation: a man, frail, slumped, and starving; broken in body, but indomitable in spirit. “Victor Horta is one of my greatest influences when it comes to the chairs, tables, beds, and other furniture I create. As one of the pioneers of the Art Nouveau movement, he inspires me to give my pieces an elegant, flowing aesthetic. I counterbalance that feminine mystique by adding the masculine solidity of rivets. Yin, and yang. Symmetry. “Metalwork takes a whole lot of muscle and makes just as much noise. It will smash, cut, burn, and exhaust you while you’re just starting out. It will smash, cut, burn, and exhaust you just a little bit less once you’ve mastered it. And that’s why I love it. I am a jock – but instead of linemen, I’m wrestling against the world’s least forgiving medium.” Visit Peter’s gallery at 8470 Galpin Boulevard, Chanhassen to see his uncommissioned pieces for sale, or speak with him about whichever special thing you have in mind. Real Estate...It’s All About You!!

Kim was very attentive when we viewed houses and pointed out the good and the bad. She understood what we were looking for and helped find houses to see that fit our criteria. Kim really helped us get into our new home with a multiple offer situation and we were the offer selected! Kim has been very helpful post closing for both houses and has continued to be someone we can reach out to with questions as they come up. We would highly recommend Kim and the Guild Group for sellers and buyers throughout the metro area! The ease of working with Kim and the whole Guild Group made both selling and buying less stressful. - Natalie and Connor, Chanhassen Google  star

BRING THEM YOUR STUFF! ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUE SCHADOW

THE PROP

S H O P That’s the whole meaning of life, isn’t it? Trying to find a place for your stuff. – George Carlin READER – please go and look at your stuff. Take note of the clothes you haven’t worn in ages. The pots and pans that haven’t touched a burner since Brad and Jennifer were an item. The countertop appliances and furniture and bedding and dishes and shoes that someone could use – but not you.

62

T R E N D SE T T E R | LO CAL SE RVICE S

Here is what I propose doing:Give that stuff to a neighbor who needs it. Not tomorrow. Not the day after. Today. Or tomorrow, or the day after. Whatever’s convenient. Just so long as you donate it to The PROP Shop of Eden Prairie, you’ll do good. “By the time this article comes out, we’ll have served over 4,000 client families and given away almost as many beds,” said Cindy Eddy, executive director. “We have over 750 families at any given time. Single mothers. The working poor. Refugees who came to this country with only the shirts on their backs. Anyone in need of the material goods that should come standard with residence in the First World is welcome at The PROP Shop. “It’s easy to bring a bunch of gently used necessities to our donation center and never think about them again. Let me emphasize that point one more time: It’s easy! But sadly, that does mean most of our donors will never realize just how great an impact they’re making. “That’s why I consider myself blessed. I get to see it every day. “Any gift of clothing could be life changing. Just the other day, we welcomed a couple who were planning on getting married – in two hours! Like in a scene from Cinderella, our volunteers scoured the store to assemble their ensembles. He looked sharp in a new blazer and tie; she, like a dream in a matching white dress and shawl, and, thanks to one of our fashionable and felicitously sized donors, a ring that fit perfectly. One of our volunteers, a former floral designer at Bachman’s, put together a bouquet. We even had a lovely dress for the mother of the bride, with the bridal store’s tag still on it. “Our donors’ clothing also helps people work. If someone can’t afford the interview clothes they need to get a job because they don’t have a job, then we’ll lift them out of their paradoxical conundrum. People who already have jobs yet still struggle to make ends meet are no less welcome. One time, a man came to work on our own ceiling. His boots were totally shredded, but as fortune would have it, we had a new pair in his size in stock. CONTINUED >

“He later explained that he had donated all of his savings to members of his church who didn’t have food. But no more of him. I don’t want to cry. “If you have any tools that could be of use to someone in the trades, please bring them here. It will fuel the economy with perfect efficiency. Thanks to Amazon, whose Shakopee distribution center sends us otherwise pristine goods in damaged packaging, we were able to give a local handyman a whole bunch of something called ‘Liquid Nails.’ I’d thought it was to do with mani-pedis, but he seemed to know better. “Children, of course, are the heartwarmingest of all. I’ve seen little kids beside themselves to get new beds, backpacks, school clothes, and sneakers with Bluey or Spider-Man on them. Our annual winter coat distribution is a definite high point. Each child gets to choose between six different coats – mostly new, all clean – as well as boots, mittens and snow pants. We give out winter clothing well ahead of winter. Even so, I’ve watched more fully coated children blithely skipping out into sweltering heat than I can count.” Your donations help The PROP Shop! So too does your patronage at their resale store, where choice items are sold to raise money for underwear, socks, diapers, and other goods few people would ever think to donate. Bring stuff to 15195 Martin Drive, Eden Prairie 10am-3pm Tuesday through Saturday, or visit PROPShopEP.org to learn more.

BUNNY YOGA WITH RABBIT RESCUE OF MINNESOTA Saturday, December 5th, 10-11am at the Shakopee Community Center $26 Per Non-Resident ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER We’ve all known the same sorrow. It’s that heartache you feel when you are outdoors, see a bunny, and know he will bolt instead of loping over to where you can pet him. Don’t blame the bunny. He doesn’t know Snow White from Lennie Small, and he must be careful. He’s small. Sorrow, no more. Thanks to Rabbit Rescue of Minnesota, you can soon surround yourself with frolicsome bunnies who like being petted. The nonprofit org, which saves and aids domesticated buns who’ve been ill, abused, neglected, abandoned, or otherwise treated like buns thoroughly oughtn’t be, invites you to Bunny Yoga. “Don’t worry if you’re not good at yoga, or haven’t done it before,” said DJ Mans, RRMN founder and former director. “Yoga isn’t the primary focus of Bunny Yoga. Oohing and ahhing over the world’s sweetest creatures is! “We bring healthy and sociable rabbits who love any opportunity to explore a big, open space and meet new people on their terms. Participants are encouraged to reach out and pat their hearts out, just so long as they stay on their mats (where we’ll place a few alluring treats) and resist the powerful urge to pick bunnies up. Children 10 and older are also welcome, so long as they’re each accompanied by an adult, one to one. “Stick around afterward to learn more about RRMN’s impact and our adoptable friends. They’re quiet little animals who like freely roaming their home and jumping up on the couch for cuddles, and can learn to use a litter box just like any cat. And they’re just so darn cute!

68

“But they’re not for everyone. Rabbits have strict health and dietary needs, which we’ll explain in full detail before you decide to bring home one of ours. Our foster-based rescue cares for 100 to 120 buns at any given time, so there are plenty to go around!” Register by November 30th at RabbitRescueOfMN.com/Events

Isabelle, a widow living with multiple sclerosis, faced two options in her late-70s: move to a nursing home, or have someone live with her. She strongly preferred the latter, but didn’t know anyone who could move in. Margaret, meanwhile, faced challenges of her own. Her divorce in her mid-50s had left her unable to afford an apartment. She had a full-time job. She just needed to save up until she could make proper living arrangements. A popular home sharing program provided by Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota brought the two together. “Isabelle received the support she needed to continue living independently,” said Joan Palmquist with the Eden Prairie Housing Alliance. “By the time her health required that she receive greater care, Margaret had become self-sufficient. And the friendship and kindness they shared along the way? It was truly a winwin situation – just beautiful.” “LSS ran a home sharing program from the 1980s through the early 2000s,” explained Mary Speer, manager of program development. “Team members in older adult services at LSS remembered it. They began discussing it again as housing costs were rising across the Twin Cities, where nearly four in 10 renters now spend more than 30 percent of their income on rent.

“They believed such a program was due for a revival – and they weren’t the only ones.” Now the LSS Home Matching Service is making a comeback, and generating great interest across the seven-county metro area. “Several years ago, Eden Prairie created a task force charged with recommending affordable housing ordinances for the city,” said Joan. “Once it disbanded, multiple members continued on to found the Eden Prairie Housing Alliance in 2022. We recently decided to pursue one recommendation that was made yet never acted upon: to pilot test an older adult shared housing program. PROP had considered starting one sooner, but the pandemic put a halt to their work. “Our focus was too broad when we first started out. We were attempting to boil the ocean. But then we connected with LSS, and an incredible partnership formed.” Joan initially reached out to LSS to seek guidance from anyone who had been involved with its previous home sharing program. “Little did she know, we had already decided to renew it through our innovative Incubator program,” said Mary. “It takes ideas from team members who are closest to the needs of communities, evaluates them with expertise from outside professionals, and then test pilots them.” LSS began taking applications in mid-summer, and has been fine-tuning the process of matching homeowners with home seekers with safety for both as a key priority.

Homeowners might apply because they have interest in financial support, need household assistance, or both, or simply because they seek a greater sense of security and companionship. Once the homeowner and home seeker have completed thorough background checks, they are introduced to one another. “If the two hit it off, we’ll provide the lease agreement,” said Mary. “A social worker will then begin paying monthly visits, just to make sure the arrangement is working and help negotiate any issues that may have sprung up.” Generally, home seekers are looking for more affordable housing options and a meaningful way to make a difference in the lives of others. “They are often young adults, college students, or recently divorced singles,” said Mary. “Many are budding professionals, who are having a hard time finding their footing on their first salary. These are especially valuable to a city like Eden Prairie, where booming industry needs aspiring talent. “The LSS Home Matching Service is a pure expression of our community’s love for one another; a way to keep older adults in their homes for as long as possible, and give others a fast track toward financial independence. Truly, everyone benefits.” If you would like to learn more about the LSS Home Matching Service, or you or a loved one is interested in participating, please call (651) 255-2335 or visit LSSMN.org/LSSHomeMatchingService. GIVING TOGETHER A Community That Shows Up

Every year, City Lifestyle sends checks to hundreds of families in need across the country through our annual Giving Campaign and our nonprofit arm, Kingdom Building Foundation. But none of it would be possible without you. We can only help the people we know about, and

that’s where our readers come in. If you know someone quietly struggling, whether it’s a single parent, a senior citizen, or a family facing something they never saw coming, we want to hear their story. Nominations are what make this whole campaign possible.

We provided a chair lift for a teenager paralyzed in a gymnastics accident so she could move freely through her own home again. We helped a child who lost an eye to cancer get the prosthetic because insurance wouldn’t cover it. We covered dental work for a man who needed his smile back just to walk into a job interview. We got heat turned back on for a family who had spent part of the winter without it. We helped a family keep up with bills while a husband and father fought pancreatic cancer, and we helped another family cover medical expenses after the unimaginable loss of a child. These are just a few examples of some of the hundreds of individuals that have been helped through nominations from readers like you. None of it happens without someone noticing first and speaking up. "We don't just send checks," says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle.

“We send a message: You are seen, you are loved, and you are not forgotten.” Together with City Lifestyle President Matthew Perry, Steven has helped shape this into a tradition that goes far beyond the holiday season. "This is about community," Matthew says. "We believe we've been blessed, so now we get to be a blessing." Often, the person making the nomination gets just as much out of the experience as the recipient. There's something powerful about being part of the reason someone else's burden got lighter, especially when that need might have otherwise gone unnoticed. The campaign is completely confidential. No names are ever shared or publicized, and nominating someone is as simple as telling us their story. We are looking for those in our communities who fall between the cracks of getting help, and together as a community, we can meet those needs.

Nominations open November 1st and close December 3rd. To nominate someone in your community, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and find the form in our bio, or visit KingdomBuildingFoundation.org.

This season, giving starts with you. Let's do it together. Nominate someone in need today.

Girls in

Aviation Day Exciting and Rewarding Careers: Cleared for Takeoff

At least 1,800 people gathered at Flying Cloud Airport on September 19th – not to engage the Twin Cities’ primary reliever airport’s vital services, but to discover the myriad opportunities awaiting aviation professionals there and everywhere else. “This year’s Girls in Aviation Day had the highest attendance to date!” proclaimed Kelli Yue, vice president of Stars of the North – the Minnesota division of Women in Aviation International, which indiscriminately encourages children to get excited about careers in aviation and aerospace. “More than 50 businesses and organizations – including several major airlines, AV8 and other local flight schools, and the Twin Cities’ own Metropolitan Airports Commission – participated by handing out swag and showcasing everything they do. Kids were invited to enter the interiors and cockpits of over a dozen different planes, such as an Aviat Husky tailwheel and a massive Bombardier Challenger longrange business jet. We also offered nine different STEM activities, from designing your own airport to operating a realistic flight simulator. “This was our 12th Girls in Aviation Day. It’s always a super joyful and positive occasion, but it’s becoming even better with each passing year. We’re now welcoming more and more grown-up attendees who owe their current careers to the initial exposure to aviation they received at past years’ events. They’re living proof that we’re accomplishing our goal!” Did you miss this year’s Girls in Aviation Day? Don’t go into a tailspin over it. Just visit StarsOfTheNorth.org this summer to see when the next date will land!
