All You Need Is Love (and Eden Prairie Lifestyle) Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle readers, Love. Love! What is love? Is it just a chemical reaction that goes on inside your brain whenever you see something or someone you really, really like? The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is the United States Air Force’s most expensive plane. For each hour the $2 billion jet spends in flight, it spends another hundred hours in maintenance. That includes regular and total disassembly: every part is taken apart, inspected inside out, and gingerly put back together again.

Such scrutiny, planning and focus on safety are required of all elements of aviation – including the development and improvements at airports. That’s why Eden Prairie’s own Flying Cloud Airport (FCM) is currently developing its Long-Term Plan (LTP): a study of facility and infrastructure needs based on projected activity through 2040. It will ensure that the busiest reliever airport managed by the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) – which generates approximately $230 million in economic output annually, and supports nearly 1,200 jobs – remains safe, efficient, and profitable. “The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and various state and local agencies ask us to update our LTP every seven to ten years,” said Eric Gilles, senior airport planner and project manager of the LTP. “That fosters a dynamic environment for planning in which we routinely review the existing and future needs of FCM. It also gives us an opportunity to engage with airport users and community stakeholders so we can better understand their aspirations. “The LTP helps us align FCM’s operations with three primary objectives: enhancing airport safety, preserving (and, if possible, improving) capabilities for the current family of aircraft using the airport, and promoting financial sustainability of the MAC reliever airport system by exploring revenue opportunities for aeronautical and non-aeronautical development alike. “Much of airport planning revolves around adhering to the FAA’s design guidance for all airport

For runways, the LTP often includes ensuring we are satisfying slope requirements for the runway safety area, as well as compliance with the runway’s object-free area and land use protection zones. “Part of our mission to preserve FCM’s operational capabilities includes assessing all current air traffic activity, and anticipating the sort of activity we should reasonably expect to accommodate in the future. Although our FAA-approved forecast predicts modest growth over the coming two decades, we still must make certain we will continually meet the standards of upcoming aircraft designs. “Once we have identified a preferred plan, the LTP will review potential opportunities to execute the plan through phases over the next 20 years in a fiscally responsible fashion. Essentially, the LTP keeps us mindful of what we can realistically achieve. “We anticipate completion of the LTP around the second quarter of 2024. It must be reviewed by the Metropolitan Council before we can take any potential action, which should begin around the middle of next year. Sometime in early 2024, we will also conduct another wave of public engagement, which will provide additional opportunities to receive public feedback. The community engagement process has been invaluable to the LTP process, and I am grateful for everyone’s participation and feedback.” While the date is not yet set, public event information will become available on the MAC’s website. Ketamine. It is an anesthetic with minor hallucinogenic effects; approved by the FDA in 1970, and now one of the most commonly used medicines worldwide. When it is administered by a doctor – and when its recipient also receives therapy – ketamine can elicit numerous mental health benefits. It might already have become mainstream psychiatric medicine if not for the war on drugs, which President Nixon declared the year following ketamine’s official approval. The Institute for Integrative Therapies (IIT) is making up for lost time. As the first psychedelic healing center in Minnesota, IIT is poised to advance the world’s understanding of ketamine by leaps and bounds – as well as turn Eden Prairie into the Midwest's center of excellence for psychedelic medicine.

“Ketamine wasn’t used to treat depression, anxiety and other mood disorders until the late ‘90s,” said Dr. Manoj Doss, founder and CEO of IIT. “As more and more research was published, it became increasingly evident that ketamine’s therapeutic effects aren’t limited to the brief psychedelic experience it induces. Ketamine also stimulates the body’s natural production of glutamate: a neurotransmitter that is pivotal to memory, cognition and mood regulation, and which also fosters neural connections within the prefrontal and cerebral cortices. These parts of the brain do not use serotonin, which is why ketamine-assisted therapy can yield results that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, cannot.

John Locke said a child's mind is like a blank slate; or, to put it more contemporarily, an iPad without software. He believed experience alone determines who a child will be. Perhaps some dispositions are bred in the bone. Who can say? But Locke sure was right about one thing. Children do learn from experience. In fact, it’s the only thing they’ll ever learn from. Decorum. Propriety. Savoir faire. You have these qualities in spades. (All Eden Prairie Lifestyle readers do.) And your child, who has been blessed to learn from the best, is already starting to handle themself like a real cool cat. Your child is also fortunate to model their deportment after someone who works hard to take care of their family – and therein lies the rub. How can you make sure your child is still learning to function as a good human being when you’re not around to show them how? “Everything in this world starts with children,” said Shonali Harrison, director of Eden Prairie Montessori. “If you want to fill the world with peace, love and kindness, then you have to raise children with the same. “But loving your neighbor isn’t enough. You also have to be a good neighbor yourself! That’s why our Montessori preschool program teaches the Exercises of Practical Life: care of oneself, care of one’s environment, control over one’s movement, and grace and courtesy. “Washing your hands. Buttoning your shirt. Putting on your shoes. Blowing your nose into a tissue. These are the maneuvers of self-reliance – acts of self-care every child must master. And they are eager to! They just need warm, enthusiastic teachers who will show them. “When I say we teach children to care for their environment, I only mean their immediate surroundings

(they can solve global warming when they’re older). Cleaning up crumbs they’ve left on the floor. Returning books they’ve read back to the shelf. Hanging their coats back on their hooks. We also encourage children to help their parents fold the laundry, set the table, load the dishwasher – anything they can do to be more considerate of others and their surroundings. “Teaching a child to control their own movement does much more than develop their motor skills. It gives them confidence, poise and coordination. To be sure, we aren’t training ballet dancers. We’re just showing children how to move with purpose by teaching them exercises like balancing on one foot, activities as simple as opening a box or as complicated as creating yarn art, and sensible habits like waiting until recess to run around. “Grace and courtesy grease the wheels of social interaction. That’s why we model good manners and reward children with praise whenever they follow suit. While some of the finer points of etiquette can only be taught, children do show an amazing natural aptitude for civility. They want to greet their classmates nicely each day. They want to offer their sincere apologies whenever they’ve committed a faux pas. They want resolutions to conflicts that make everyone happy. So long as they have an environment where grace and courtesy are easy to express, children take every opportunity to express them. “We see children mastering the Exercises of Practical Life in so many different ways. The other day I observed a little girl arranging flowers in a vase. ‘Oh, it’s so pretty,’ she said to herself. ‘I wish I could take this home.’ But instead she placed it at the snack table, where all her friends could enjoy looking at her fine handiwork.

• 8 oz Cream cheese (room temperature) • 1 pint Heavy whipping cream (38% fat or higher) • 4 oz Parmesan cheese, grated (BelGioioso or similar – not Kraft) • 3 cloves Garlic, minced • ½ each Red onion, finely diced • 1 each Jalapeno, seeded & finely diced (optional) • 1 each Fresno pepper, seeded & finely diced (optional) • 1 – 16 oz jar Marinated artichoke hearts, roughly chopped • 1 – 6 oz pkg Baby spinach • 1 tbsp Cumin, ground & toasted (optional) • ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper (optional) • 1 tsp Kosher salt (more if needed) • Scant Olive oil (for sautéing) • Crusty bread or tortilla chips (sourdough baguettes or ciabatta)

DIRECTIONS

1. Sauté onion, garlic and peppers in olive oil over medium heat until onion appears translucent and garlic is aromatic 2. Reservations For Two Dreamy destinations for couples looking to get away.

Finding a life partner just might be easier than finding someone you can travel with. Pace, patience and priorities all matter when organizing itineraries, straddling time zones and navigating new places. Do you like languid mornings with room service, wide sandy beaches and white-glove service? Or, do you prefer watching the sunrise in hiking boots, launching into eye-opening excursions and digging to find that hidden gem of a restaurant that serves local food to locals? When the stars align, both partners have an affinity for generally the same kind of vacation, or are willing to compromise. Enjoying travel with your mate is the icing on the (wedding) cake. Here are a few ideas for fabulously romantic getaways. Bon Voyage!

Traveling can be as stressful as it is sublime. Exhausting as it is inspiring. Traveling as a couple requires additional planning and communication with a healthy dose of patience. Much like marriage! But, waking up in a faraway place, exploring unknown terrain together and leaving your routine and all its trappings behind can be therapeutic. You both can take on new roles and release tired habits.
