It is high time Americans come together to have a discussion about an important matter that has gone mostly overlooked for far too long. I am referring to plastic Easter eggs. Sure, they can be filled with fun-sized candy bars (loath though I am to call the smallest possible version of candy bars “fun”). Sure, they prevent toddlers from spilling dye on carpeting. But the egg, white vinegar and carpet cleaning industries will all soon wither and perish unless we embrace traditional Easter eggs once more. Do your part – dye eggs! With that serious business out of the way, let’s switch over to the fine businesses we are proud to feature in this month’s issue. Now that the air is no longer deadly to the touch, it is time to have fun outdoors. I advise beelining to Paradise Charter Cruises, which offers leisurely yacht rides across Lake Minnetonka and riverboat excursions down the Mississippi. It is a treat to look at all the houses on the shore of Lake Minnetonka and calculate how many lottery tickets you would need to purchase in order to be able to afford one. But if you’re in too great of a hurry for boat travel, then you must read on to learn all about Premier Jet Center. The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools’ Red & Black Gala is becoming a live, in-person fête again this year! It will be held at Bearpath, no less, which means you had better dress to the nines if you plan to be in attendance. Fortunately, Bill's Toggery, which has clothed discerning gentlemen at their store in downtown Shakopee for three generations, is always available to make you look like a million bucks. Are all of your cruise, air travel, fundraising event and men’s clothing needs already perfectly met? Two tickets to paradise. That Eddie Money oldie hummed through my mind all morning as I cheerily dressed for a Sunday brunch aboard Paradise Charter Cruises’ boat on Lake Minnetonka. The weather was cool and overcast skies threatened rain, but nothing was going to discourage me from going. After six months of cold weather, I was desperate for a good time out with my husband. This brunch cruise offered a perfect launchpad back into life – an affordable luxury just a few minutes from home. It turns out I need not have worried at all. Perfect weather is not required for a pleasant time on a Paradise cruise. Ample, easy, and free parking was found behind the shops along Water Street just a short walk from the Port of Excelsior. As I surveyed the row of docked charter boats I was delighted to discover we’d be sailing aboard a majestic mini cruise ship, the Destiny II. She’s an impressive sight: a modern boat with all the elegance of a full-sized cruise ship. Two decks encased

in sparkling clean glass lend an open, airy feel, and she’s outfitted with an understated nautical decor ideally suited to a cruise on Minnesota’s swankiest lake. We waited to board in a queue of ‘happy-to-be-here’ Minnesotans gathered to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, engagements, graduations, missed moments and together time after a long season kept apart. An attentive and cheerful crew ushered us aboard just a few minutes before our scheduled departure time. Once aboard we chose a top-level table surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, safe from wind and water. An openair deck for cruising and dining sat adjacent to the dining room so we could easily step out for a fresh lake breeze or to snap an Instagram moment whenever the need arose. Our cruise departed sharply at 11am for a pleasant glide across Lake Minnetonka’s gently rolling water. An attentive crew fulfilled drink orders from the onboard bar as we got

underway so we could experience firsthand how the other half lives. Mimosas, anyone? While we sipped our drinks we sailed past yachts, sailboats, lakeside mansions, the occasional duck family, and a heap of natural beauty. Captain Ed discretely spilled secrets that only lake insiders know – a who’s who of famous residents, jaw-dropping real estate facts, and morsels of scant Minnetonka histories and mysteries that made us all insiders too. In between his brief comments, we enjoyed gazing at spectacular views that are only visible from the lake itself. The sun appeared midway through our cruise and the surface of the lake lit up like a sea of glittering diamonds. So beautiful. It was a perfect chance to stretch and snap a few envy-inducing photos for the folks back home. (Yes, our home is only eight miles away, but in this moment it may as well have been eight million.) Just as I returned to my table we were invited to partake in a generously laid brunch buffet. I follow a restricted diet and was pleased to find many suitable gluten-free dishes to choose from: fluffy and moist scrambled eggs with various condiment toppings, orange-glazed ham, turkey sausage links, seasoned potatoes O'Brien, and fresh fruits. My husband sampled the full array of buffet items mentioned plus muffins, coffee cake, and their signature dish, a scrumptious cinnamon French toast bake. ‘Deliciously stuffed’ was the unanimous verdict once we pushed ourselves back from the table. (Insider tip: First floor tables get to the buffet first and won’t have to carry a plate up the staircase.) The evident care taken by every member of the staff really made a good impression on me. All of our servers were attentive and seemed to really enjoy their work. We observed the captain calm the worries of a woman seated nearby who was afraid of water, slip seamlessly into pleasant banter with another guest, then discreetly dispose of trash on a table as he completed various duties, all without a ruffle to his pleasant demeanor. Another nice surprise was discovering that the cheerful man clad in blue jeans who helped us aboard in Excelsior was, in fact, the owner of the company Dave Lawrance. Our cruise continued for another blissful, beautiful half hour after we’d finished our breakfast. Just as the Port of Excelsior came into view, a Rolling Stones tune began quietly playing over the onboard sound system. I had to laugh at the timing of the song. You can’t always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you might find you get what you need. The past two hours with Paradise Charter Cruises were exactly what I wanted and exactly what I needed on this Sunday morning – a micro vacation from my everyday life. If you ask me, there is not a more ideal or affordable getaway in the Twin Cities than this. Hope to meet you aboard sometime!

Daniel Hermanson is the kind of Minnesotan people think of when they are asked to imagine a Minnesotan. He was raised on a farm in Isanti, where he attended many a 4-H fair with some fine specimen of a domesticated animal in tow. He spent much of his youth helping his father fend off Midwestern weather’s relentless attacks against outbuildings. And like so many rural Minnesotans, Daniel couldn’t resist the allure of the Twin Cities. Daniel wasn’t a moth drawn to the cities’ bright lights. It was the sea of houses surrounding them that caught his intrigue – each one an opportunity for a young man who knows how to save it from disrepair. He set right to work putting nails, drywall, paint, tiles and other implements of improvement wherever they needed to go. He also did all of that for $10 an hour, which is the kind of pay that compels many to meditate on three inspiring words. “The American dream,” said Daniel, owner of Dandy General Contracting. “I had done pretty much every kind of home maintenance and repair project imaginable by 2018, and by that point, I learned how to do them better and more efficiently than anyone I had previously worked for. I always knew I wanted to own my own business. I finally made the leap because I was ready to make a name for myself as a general contractor – to stop being a cog in the machine, and to gather the resources I’ll need to raise a healthy family in the future. That’s my ‘why.’ “I focused on tiling during my first two years working for myself. I didn’t do routine grout-anddash projects. I specialized in gorgeous Carrara marble shower walls, herringbone pattern floors, and other surfaces I could step back from and take pride in. I loved the design and installation phases equally, and soon realized I could explore my artistic side even more deeply by branching out into decks.

“Most people don’t consider decks as a vehicle for artistic expression. But when it’s done right, a deck should have even spacing, satisfying geometry, perfectly clean lines, and overall aesthetics that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance painting. Over time I advanced from building square, cookie-cutter decks to multi-level masterpieces, complete with lighting and underdecking that effectively increase a home’s living space. “Dandy General Contracting has doubled in size every year since 2019, with the exception of last year when we grew by 350%. I now have four companies I sub out work to in addition to nine of my own fulltime guys. If they weren’t already a friend of mine when they joined me, then they were a friend of a friend who I knew I could count on. I’m especially grateful to have partnered with Adam Callies, who I met while studying at the University of St. Thomas. He helped us launch Adam’s Garage Guys, which provides garage construction and renovation services throughout the Twin Cities metro. “Working alongside your friends doesn’t give you license to become complacent. Do you know what my guys call me? They call me ‘The Dictator’ – not because I was elected by the Roman Senate during a time of crisis, but because I insist on everything being done flawlessly. I never want to give our clients a reason to call us back to a job site, just like I don’t want them to be able to think of a single negative thing to say about our service to their friends and family. I’m a stickler right down to answering my phone. I can’t tell you how many times people have chosen Dandy just because I was the first out of a dozen contractors to answer their call. “But I’m a softie to my team where it counts most. I pay them exceptionally well, because that’s the only way to create the quality of work which shines through in every finished project. Anyone who says

The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS) will host the annual Red & Black Gala at Bearpath Golf & Country Club on April 28th. It is FEPS’ signature fundraising event, where guests will enjoy live music, the country club’s delicious fare, and bidding on one-of-a-kind auction items. All proceeds from the gala will support FEPS’ mission: to support and enhance the legacy of excellence in Eden Prairie Public Schools by funding grants which enrich students’ lives, awarding scholarships to Eden Prairie High School graduates, and honoring those who make a direct impact on our community. “I had a great experience attending Eden Prairie’s schools throughout my childhood,” said Charlie Crocker, senior brand manager at Media Bridge
