That’s largely because we have our own in-house lending department. It’s also of great help to our clients who wrongly believe their circumstances bar them from taking out loans. I recently worked with a man whose credit score had been ruined by identity theft. Soon you’ll notice a chatter – the resident chickens and guinea fowl, who graciously provide us with free pest control and fertilizer. If you let the croaking frogs draw you near the pond, you’ll see the fantails of koi shimmering in the water. If you walk through the greenhouse, you’re almost overwhelmed by the symphonic smell of thousands of herbs. It brings back sweet memories of all the things you take for granted. “The senses come alive here.” The Mustard Seed provides whatever you need to make your own little Elysium back at home. There are even bees at The Mustard Seed, but it is best just to leave them be. “More and more people are making the shift toward pollinator gardens these days,” said Kelly. “They tend to follow a more natural theme, with less heavily manicured yards and flower beds, but it’s just as easy to create a classical garden that’s friendly to native hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. We offer a huge selection of salvia, liatris and monarda flowers that are just as colorful as they are inviting to nectar-loving creatures. “We have dedicated over 6,000 square feet of greenhouse space to annuals and perennials, with regular shipments of new flowers arriving weekly. Goodness, where to begin? Well, the zinnias are always a crowd-pleaser. They are an annual, so you have to plant them every year, but they’re well worth the effort for all the lush shades of red, pink, purple and yellow they add to a garden from late spring until first frost. Lobelias are a royal blue trailing flower, perfect for any spot in a garden which could do with a little more volume. But if I had to pick a favorite, it would have to be the calla lily. It doesn’t bloom nearly as long as I would like it to – but when it does, it sure is a beauty. “No matter which flowers you fall in love with here, they’re all available in custom planters that will brighten your porch or patio. If they’re destined for your garden instead, we would be delighted to explain how you can help them flourish. We can make any guest’s thumb just a little greener. “If you’re looking to add more height or privacy to your landscape, we have an abundance of medium plants as well. The chokeberry is a

wonderful one because it’s always changing. In the spring it bursts with delicate white flowers; in the summer it produces its signature fruit, which you can turn into jam or leave for the birds; and in the fall, its leaves take on a brilliant red. We also have a variety of hydrangeas, which present massive, brilliant, globe-shaped bunches of flowers from late summer well into fall. “Everyone needs a little shade – or, to put it a slightly different way, everyone needs a shade tree. Whether you want a smaller accent at the corner of your home or a larger traditional tree to shield your deck from the sun, the best time to plant is right now. We have the Ohio buckeye, which shoots up gigantic cone-shaped clusters of flowers. We have the autumn blaze maple, which truly lives up to its name every fall. I especially adore the sunburst honey locust. Its smaller leaves dapple the ground below with sunlight, and it holds its bright gold throughout the growing season. “Bring photos and measurements of your landscape when you visit! We’ll recommend the plants that would complement it best. Or if you’re in love with another house in your neighborhood, steal a few photos of it when its owners aren’t looking. We’ll clue you in to their gardening secrets so you can bring them back home. “Many of our guests stop by after visiting the nearby Minnesota Landscape Arboretum so they can turn all that inspiration into a course of action. We carry many of the same plants the Arboretum features, but if you can’t find something you want, just ask us. Whenever someone has a kind thought, we write it down and attach it to the peace chain so it can hang over all of our heads. “We often ask our children what they’re grateful for, just to help them stay focused on life’s positives. For example, just the other day one of our little girls began crying. She wanted all the toys, you see, and she was struggling with the reality that she couldn’t have them. It’s a feeling many adults are familiar with as well. A four-year-old boy abandoned the art project he had been working so hard on, walked over to her, and asked if she would like to play with him. Flying Cloud Airport is a linchpin of the Eden Prairie community. It is the Metropolitan Airports Commission’s busiest reliever airport, where more than 130,000 takeoffs and landings take place each year. Despite receiving zero funding from local sales or property taxes, Flying Cloud generates over $220 million in economic output annually. Our airport currently supports nearly 1,200 jobs! Flying Cloud is home to several fine local businesses. There is ASI Jet Center, which will supply you with a shiny new plane. There is AV8 Flight School, which will teach you how to make good use of your plane. There is also Premier Jet Center, which will ensure your plane remains in perfect working order. And if you would rather fly without having to concern yourself over plane ownership, operation and maintenance, then you need only engage Aviation Charter. “Our four jets and six turbine-propeller aircraft are available for private flights 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Kirk Otteson, vice president and director of operations for Aviation Charter. Our charter flights are mostly business travel, and we bring quite a few passengers to Canada and the Dakotas for hunting trips as well. But charter flight is only about one-third of our business. For most of the people who depend on us, Aviation Charter is a real lifesaver. “The majority of the work we do is for LifeSource, an Organ Procurement Organization that serves over seven million people throughout the Upper Midwest. Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Come Tiptoe Through the Tulips With Me ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER

A giant now sleeps beneath a blanket of snow in Chaska: the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. (Cool people call it “the Arb.”) The 1,200-acre horticultural garden and arboretum arguably isn’t at its very best right now – but there are still many fun things to do there in February, and planning a springtime visit to the Arb can help anyone weather winter’s interminable funk. The Arb was founded in 1958 by the Men’s Garden Club of Minneapolis, the Lake Minnetonka Garden Club, the Minnesota State Horticultural Society, and other community supporters. The group promptly gifted it to the University of Minnesota, which used their new facilities to turn our state into one of the shining lights of the horticultural world. UofM’s Horticultural Research Center has developed 160 varieties of cold-hardy plants so far, including the divine Honeycrisp apple. If anyone ever offers you a Red Delicious, it is your duty as a self-respecting Minnesotan to swat it out of their hand and demand they eat a Honeycrisp. They will thank you for changing their life as soon as the elation from their first bite has subsided. As riveting a subject as fruit genetics can be, the sights and sounds are the real stars of the show at the Arb. I will be your guide, although I must omit some details or else there won’t be enough space for Flying Cloud Airport’s article. First, book a $15 ticket online for each visitor in your party. Visitors aged 15 and younger still need tickets; theirs are just free because they don’t have jobs. Once the friendly attendant at the gatehouse has scanned your barcode, you’re in. After you have experienced zero difficulty finding a spot in the Arb’s spacious parking lot, proceed to the Elizabeth Carr Slade Perennial Garden. Its fountain sprays amid 324 species and cultivars of gorgeous, ephemeral blossoms, many of which are clumsily navigated by pollen-dusted bees. Next you must see the Griggs/Burke Annual Garden’s 30,000 longer-lived plants, all arranged around the whimsical Merboys fountain.

The nearby Burdick-Craddick-Lott Walk showcases 81 varieties of chrysanthemums, over one-quarter of which came into existence courtesy of UofM. It can be difficult to avoid photographers’ lenses while you are appreciating so many flowers. These areas are madly popular among newlywed couples, so you are likely to become immortalized in several strangers’ photo albums and appear in a few of their Christmas cards as well. If you have ever wished you could visit Japan’s Edo period but don’t want to risk being present for the 1783 eruption of Mount Asama, then you will love the Japanese Garden. Landscape architect Koichi Kawana designed an enigmatic space which demands multiple visits to be appreciated in full. Even if you aren’t especially perceptive, you are still certain to enjoy the 9’ waterfall, granite snow lanterns and candy-colored koi. Take note of the redbud trees! They too were developed by UofM’s horticulturalists. The adjacent MacMillan Hosta Glade is a criminally overlooked attraction. It features 300 varieties of hostas including the stately Gold Standard, the bicolor Vulcan, the chartreuse-rimmed Golden Tiara, the bluish Halcyon, the spidery Kabitan, and the description-defying Frances Williams. Once you have become inspired by the home landscape designs showcased at the de Vos Gardens and contemplated the meaning of life at the Woodland Azalea Garden, go to the Rose Gardens where prickly shrubs burst with dense, brightly colored petals. You will wish you could pick some flowers to take home, but the Arb’s staff are wholly against that line of thinking. It is now time for my favorite part of the Arb: Green Heron Pond, which is thoughtfully girdled by a boardwalk so your shoes don’t get dirty. This is the birds’ domain, where you will hear male red-winged blackbirds frenetically advertising their services to female red-winged blackbirds, Canada geese honking with relief over having found a swath of wilderness where #1 steel shot isn’t permitted, CONTINUED >

and even the green heron itself. The wading bird’s guttural “squee-awk” probably hasn’t inspired many sonnets. It is a Whitmanesque barbaric yawp, if it is anything, but in its defense the green heron is more interested in locating frogs than it is entertaining you. Upon circling the pond, hang a left at the Ordway Picnic Shelter (assuming you do not stop there to picnic; it is easy to transport food to courtesy of Three-Mile Drive, which includes a nearby parking lot). Enter the glade to explore the Dayton Wildflower Garden – a web of trails surrounded by trillium, orchids, bloodroot, and many other flowers which blossom before anything else does. Turkeys are particularly fond of the Dayton, and can often be found there looking for things that turkeys like. You will emerge at the Pillsbury Shade Tree Exhibit. If you have come to the Arb to learn, you will be delighted by one dozen individual exhibits which, taken altogether, provide a highly instructive primer on shade trees. If you have come to the Arb to pretend you are a pirate, you will be equally delighted by the tree house. Continue down Three-Mile Drive to take in the Prairie Trail and Prairie Garden, where you can observe the greatest plants in the world: those which are native to the best state in the world. Beyond those lie an endless variety of spruce, ash, hawthorn and crabapple trees that lead to the Arb’s highest point. There is the Harrison Sculpture Garden, which comprises over two dozen pieces of art by renowned contemporary sculptors. My personal favorite is Mimmo Paladino’s Sud II, which looks like it should be guarded by some sort of infernal three-headed dog. Contemplate the meaning of life once again at the Chinese Garden, get thoroughly disoriented in the Maze Garden, and finally arrive at the Farm at the Arb. It is a cheerful place, replete with a century-old barn, vegetable garden and crop walk. The Tashjian Bee & Pollinator Discovery Center will give you a newfound appreciation for little pollinating guys. If you go there with a date, take this opportunity to tell them “Hey honey, hive got a sting for you. Let’s bee together!” They will love it. Perhaps I ought to have advised stopping at the Oswald Visitor Center at the start of your day at the Arb. I prefer to save it for last, because that way I’m not stuck carrying around all the fine art, jewelry, puzzles, home decor, clothing, kitchen things, house plants and apples for sale at the Arboretum Gift & Garden Store. Furthermore, I like to restore myself after my jaunt by eating delicious food at The Eatery at the Arboretum.

We’re all guilty of letting our homes become cluttered and disorganized. Take me, for example. Perfect though I am, I still own a T-shirt with stains on it from ice cream I ate during middle school, and I have to open drawers at random until I find my can opener. “If only there were a better way,” I lament to my poor dog as he looks at me with equal parts hunger and judgment. “If only someone could make sense of this mess!” Turns out there is: Madi Horack and Amber Sievers, the founders of Simple Home! They provide expert in-home organization services. They make moving easy as pie whether you’re relocating across town or cross country. They told me I should look into it. I did, and I loved what I saw. “After spending a summer interning for the same company my aunt and uncle hired, I grew to love home organization even more. Being welcomed into people’s homes, fostering meaningful relationships with them, and creating positive and long-lasting impacts on their lives – plus organizing? I had truly found my calling. “I moved from my hometown of Chillicothe, IL (which you probably

haven’t heard of and would be correct to assume is too small to support a home organization business) because my partner had to relocate for work – but that also meant I could finally find my dream job in Minneapolis. That’s where I became friends with my co-worker Amber, who would later become my business partner when we founded Simple Home together. Now we follow our passion in Eden Prairie and the rest of the Twin Cities metro. “No home organization project begins before we have a consultation with our client. We want to know you as well as we can: your lifestyle, your goals, and how you make decisions. We want to know which door you exit when you leave for work in the morning. We even want to know whether you’re right- or left-handed! It’s the only way we can put everything in its most logical place, so you’ll always find just what you need with zero thought or worry. “Next we take measurements of your space, research which bins, baskets, turntables, drawer dividers and other organizing products would suit it best, and set to work customizing our plan for your home. Once you’ve approved our proposal, we return to your home to sort and categorize all of its contents. We set aside any items we suspect are old or unnecessary, but naturally, we won’t throw them out or donate them without your approval. It’s impossible to guess which things people have sentimental attachments to. If you have a cherished wooden spoon from childhood or a sweater that is associated with as many fond memories as it has holes, there is no risk of losing it while Amber and I do our jobs. “Purging unneeded belongings is very important. It creates more free space, makes your surroundings more tranquil, and shortens the amount of time you have to spend looking for things in your own home. People desperately want to declutter, but they seldom know where to begin. Amber and I take all the stress out of the process by talking you through what you should keep and what you can toss. No pushback – just friendly guidance.

Every woman dreams of an organized and beautiful closet space, but it often comes last on the list of places that get their time and attention. Follow our three tips for transforming and elevating your closet as you Spring clean and declutter for a more peaceful, inspired space you absolutely love. A sneak peek inside the closet of active mom and entrepreneur Keri Tarantino of Leawood, KS reveals a dressing room that rivals celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. But it didn’t come easily. Keri painstakingly planned, designed and curated the space with care. When we first stepped inside, we gasped as our eyes beheld the glory. No detail went unnoticed in this dreamy dressing room. Here are some guiding principles that can be drawn from her exquisite taste and vision. How you organize your closet will of course differ based on the size of your space, the size of your wardrobe, and the kind of life you lead. But applying the guidelines Keri used in her space will result in a much more organized and aesthetically pleasing space.

1. USE REAL ESTATE WISELY Reserve the front and middle of the closet for clothes worn most often. For someone who gets dressed for work each morning at 6 a.m., work clothes should be at the front of the closet. Store lesser-worn items like formal wear and out-of-season clothes toward the back and on the upper shelves. The large mirror and counter with chair provides the perfect spot to select jewelry and finalize finishing outfit touches. While every closet is different, the key here is everything has a home.

2. ORGANIZE BY KIND AND COLOR Group clothes by kind first and color second. This ensures quick location of that favorite shirt when it’s needed. Bonus - it’s easy on the eye. Group like with like: Gather belts, sweaters, long-sleeve shirts, work pants, dresses, button-down shirts, jeans, shorts, etc., and decide the best place to store each item as a group (e.g., hang pants in the closet, fold and stack sweaters in a bureau). Working with groupings will help you figure out how much space you need and the best way to store each type of item.

3. UPGRADED HANGERS The simplest and fastest way to make a BIG difference in your closet organization is to get matching hangers that go beyond the traditional plastic or wire hangers. And for sure ditch any with paper from the dry cleaner! Here’s a few of our favorite elevated hangers:
