OBGYN West’s four clinics in Eden Prairie, Chaska, Minnetonka and Waconia provide a full spectrum of health services to women of all ages. Wellness checkups, mammogram screenings, contraception assistance, periconceptional counseling, infertility care, pregnancy care, obstetric exams, and help with symptoms of menopause, perimenopause and more – they’re all at OBGYN West. The doctors of OBGYN West all share a calling: to provide warm, personalized and compassionate care to women of all ages. But as women’s health specialists, they could only regret whenever one of their patients sought care for an issue that isn’t unique to her gender. If you practice long enough, you can retire knowing you helped several generations of the same family. Most doctors won’t know a more heartening feeling.

ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER “Mind your own business.” It’s good advice in the proper context. Say for example that your neighbor leaves a freshly baked pie to cool on their window sill. You would very much like to have some of that pie, and are fairly sure your neighbor wouldn’t notice if a slice of it went missing. But you leave the pie be, because you espouse the spirit of good neighborliness Eden Prairie residents are famous for. You have successfully minded your own business – pielessly, sadly, but such is the high price of morality. Minding your own business isn’t categorically advisable, however. You want to live where you are surrounded by goods and services. You want your brothers and sisters to remain gainfully employed. You want your city’s coffers laden with the stuff that pays school teachers, first responders, sanitation workers, and all the other public servants who make your neighborhood an excellent place to call home. The Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce secures our town’s prosperity by minding its businesses. The non-profit organization enhances its members’ success through leadership, advocacy and growth opportunities, hosts over 100 programs, roundtable and networking discussions and industry-related workshops each year, and encompasses numerous subcommittees that forge rewarding connections between businesses and members of our community. The chamber isn’t an empty hurrah for mercantilism. It is the embodiment of Eden Prairie’s collective determination to excel.

LIONS CLUB “The year was 1999. I had raised three kids. Life had been good to me. It was time to start thinking about my legacy – what I could do to give back to my community,” said Gary Stevens, former president of the Eden Prairie Lions Club. “Experience taught me that my soccer and basketball coaching skills (or lack thereof) won’t make the world a better place for future generations. But that’s part of the reason why I was drawn to the Lions Club in the first place: no experience necessary. So long as you can ring a bell, pour a beer, or shuck an ear of corn, you can do a lot of good for a lot of people. “If you stop by Kowalski’s or any of the other grocery stores around town, there’s a good chance you’ll run into a Lion. Almost 30 of us spent last October handing out fliers and collecting donations for PROP Food Shelf. In November we joined the Salvation Army’s legion of bell ringers. They’ve done the math: a red kettle collects three times as many donations when it’s attended versus when it sits alone. “Many of us sing Christmas carols while we collect. A few of us have been offered money to stop singing. Even then, we’re making a difference. CONTINUED >

“Most of our fundraising programs are a little easier on the ears. We present Schooner Days, a free carnival in June that has been Eden Prairie’s highest-attended event for over six decades. We have the Corn Feed, a one-day gathering in August where we roast and sell about 5,000 ears of sweet corn. We also have the honor of serving the only (legal) beer you will find at Round Lake Park on the 4th of July. “Helen Keller, as an ambassador for the American Foundation for the Blind, addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in 1925. The Lions Club was only eight years old at the time, and still looking for a core mission to focus on – an identity, if you will. Keller challenged the 7,500 Lions in attendance to become ‘knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness.’ The Lions Club enthusiastically accepted her challenge, and remains chiefly committed to benefiting the visually impaired to this day. “Our efforts to help the visually impaired take many forms. The Lions KidSight USA Foundation brings free vision screenings to children across the country. Our technology takes only two seconds to determine whether a child should see an eye doctor, and it works on babies as young as six months. The Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation manages the eyeglasses donation boxes you’ve probably noticed around town. We collect an average of 7,000 pairs of eyeglasses for the third world each year in Eden Prairie alone. Alongside the University of Minnesota, the Lions Gift of Sight program obtains and distributes donor eyes for cornea transplants, research and education. We also raise money for Can Do Canines, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and other organizations that train guide dogs. “The Eden Prairie Lions Club is currently about 100 members strong – four times the size of the average club nationwide. Our town’s relatively large population contributes to our high headcount, but so too does our welcoming vibe. These are products we are proud to serve to our own families.” “Exercising our standards has taken an incredible amount of work,” said Kris Kowalski Christiansen, Mary Anne’s daughter who has worked in the family business since she was old enough to operate a till. “When we’re unable to find a product that meets them, we create it in-house. That’s why we have our own bakery, hired our own bread maker, and even began cultivating our own yeast. When a bread has the words ‘cinnamon’ and ‘raisin’ in its name, it simply cannot fall short of perfection. “Most of our recipes originated in our family or team members’ home kitchens. We have my nephew Boyd Oase to thank for our stuffing recipe. Terri Bennis, our chief merchandising officer, came up with our Salsa di Parma – a spread made with parmesan and asiago that complements nearly anything. Many of our recipes are created in-house by Rachael Perron, our culinary and branding director. And my father’s Aunt Nettie has our undying gratitude for creating our potato salad, a perennial favorite at our deli.” CONTINUED >

Here I must editorialize. If the Nobel Committee ever comes to its senses and begins awarding accolades for potato salad, Aunt Nettie would join her rightful place among Einstein and Mother Teresa. For hers is ambrosial potato salad: a fitting side to any Olympian’s burger. The recipe should be launched into deep space for the benefit of alien civilizations. In case I’m not making myself clear, I like Aunt Nettie’s potato salad. “We recognize when we can’t recreate a recipe without sacrificing some part of its charm,” said Mary Anne. “For example, my neighbor’s tiramisu only tastes best when it comes from her own kitchen, so hers is the only kitchen our tiramisu will ever come from.

The annual City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is in its 4th year. Last holiday season we gave away over $300,000 to help 116 individuals and families in need, but we need your help to make it happen again this year. With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. Perhaps you know of a single parent struggling to provide for their family, an elderly person who has experienced loss, someone enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need, even if no one else does. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them during this holiday season.” “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success, so we in turn want to be a blessing to others,” Matthew Perry, President of City Lifestyle adds. City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep giving on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is truly rewarding and it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster a culture of generosity.”
