“Thank you, thank you very much!” Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle Readers, I am feeling especially thankful these days. I am thankful for the enormous bird I look forward to disassembling with the help of my family. I am thankful for my beautiful wife, whose love and encouragement bear me through the most demanding challenges a magazine publisher must endure (which in fairness aren’t all that demanding in the grand scheme of things). I am thankful for my editor, that abnormally handsome paragon of literateness who may or may not have helped me pen this letter of gratitude. But above all else, I am thankful for you. Your devoted readership makes everything I do possible! This very special edition of Eden Prairie Lifestyle features several wonderful businesses and non-profit organizations that make our town the best place in the world to call home. On September 9th, 2023, TAP 2023 transformed downtown Shakopee into the most happenin’ spot on Earth! Hosted in partnership between the City of Shakopee, the Shakopee Chamber of Commerce and Shakopee Public Utilities, TAP 2023 featured unique beers by 40 Minnesotan breweries including August Schell, Back Channel, Bald Man, Castle Danger, Fat Pants, Gambit, Inbound and Indeed, as well as Shakopee’s own Badger Hill, Brewhall and Mana. The Sacred Red Rock A People and Their History, Reunited

The stars and the earth have guided the way for the Sioux people since time immemorial. The former are above interference, as each star holds its course and its aim eternally. The earth, however, is all too vulnerable to the whims of the irreverent. Many important sandstone rocks once dotted the Minnesotan landscape. The blushing anomalies were far more than waymarks alongside the trails traditionally traversed by the Sioux. They were sacred objects: representations of Mother Earth venerated by the Sioux as part of their inextricable spiritual connection to the land.

White settlers’ indifference to the Sioux way of life did not bode well for the Sacred Red Rocks. Some were pulverized by dynamite or beneath the faces of sledgehammers to deter the Sioux from congregating on privately owned land. Others have been squirreled away by private collectors who regard them as little more than curios. But a few – too few, but a few – have been restored to their rightful place with the Sioux people. “Inajapi,” said Sheldon Peters Wolfchild, a tribal member of the Mdewakanton Sioux Nation. “In our language, that word means standing up and accepting responsibility to do what’s

right. As a representative of the Lower Sioux Indian Community’s group of elders, inajapi compels me to safekeep our traditional belief system. Our group does not concern itself with politics. We only wish to preserve the spiritual path that stretches behind and ahead of our people. “In 2004 our elders held a ceremony at Newport United Methodist Church, which is the current location of one of our Sacred Red Rocks. It was then that Chris Leith, Ernie Peters Longwalker, and other spiritual leaders of the Dakota Nation decided to renew our efforts to relocate Sacred Red Rocks to our land in Mendota – the center of the earth, where the Minnesota and the Mississippi Rivers meet.” As fortune would have it, one of the lost Sacred Red Rocks was rather unambiguously sitting in Eden Prairie. One of its previous locations was included in the 1854 government survey of Eden Prairie Township. Betty Curle Baxter, who grew up on one of our town’s old farms, recalled a peculiarly large and reddish stone near her home where Sioux people would regularly gather. And when Mike McGraw sold his land in 2012, he suspected the rock it contained was of sufficient importance to merit its relocation to his friends’ front lawn. They were soon-to-be Mayor Ron Case and his wife Kathie, who presently serves as president of the Eden Prairie Historical Society. “Betty made the whole thing possible,” said Kathie. “We hadn’t known what the Sacred Red Rock looked like or where it was located before she stepped forward with documentation. In a great stroke of luck, Betty also attends the same church as Bill Konrardy – a personal friend of Sheldon’s who was able to corroborate her account.” CONTINUED >

Sheldon soon verified the Sacred Red Rock’s authenticity through ceremony. The specifics of that ceremony are sacrosanct. “We have our own belief system, which is correct, and which we aren’t obliged to explain to the non-Indian,” said Sheldon. “If you would like a deeper understanding of our beliefs, then I recommend reading God Is Red: A Native View of Religion by Vine Deloria, Jr., or watching The Doctrine of Discovery: Unmasking the Domination Code, a documentary I produced alongside Steven Newcomb of the Shawnee tribe.”

The exact whereabouts of the Sacred Red Rock are no longer a matter of public record. It has been secreted away by the Dakota elders to a place where it will be protected, respected, and central to future ceremonies. “I have been involved with the historical society for 34 years,” said Kathie. “Of everything we have ever done, nothing has felt so rewarding as witnessing the reunion of the Sacred Red Rock with its rightful heirs. Our role was admittedly small, but I believe the city of Eden Prairie is blessed to have become a footnote in the Dakota people’s immeasurably long history.”

Julie began Urban Speech Therapy out of her home, though it has quickly grown into a successful small business making a big difference in children’s lives. “Speech therapy has such a wide scope of practice, from articulation, apraxia and phonology to social skills, fluency and language development,” said Julie. “Kristin, Abby, Kristina, McKenzie, Isabel and I are all here because we love working with children and

giving them a voice. Parents’ and caregivers’ reactions to even the smallest milestones take us through the full gamut of emotions. Sometimes we laugh. Sometimes we cry. But we always feel intensely rewarded. “We use a total communication approach. Pictures, words, sounds, signs, tactile and visual cues – anything that can bridge the gap between a child’s thoughts and their speech is an invaluable teaching tool. Urban Speech Therapy is one of very few clinics in the area with therapists who are trained in PROMPT: a tactile-kinesthetic approach that uses gentle touch cues to guide the child through targeted words, phrases and sentences. I am currently the only Twin Cities speech therapist listed in the Apraxia Kids Speech-Language Pathologist Directory. “We keep speech therapy interesting to children by giving them lots of positive reinforcement, like stickers, charts, tokens, games, movement breaks, and plenty of high fives. We structure activities so children know what to expect, but we

also mix things up with fun weekly themes. Next year we will even have our therapy dog, Luka, joining the team. “We adapt speech therapy to meet the child’s needs and interests. For instance, we work with a girl who is super interested in High School Musical, so we talk about the movie, sing its songs, and make memory games out of the characters’ pictures. We recently worked with a little boy who was fascinated by the WWE. That worked out perfectly! He needed practice pronouncing his R’s, and every other pro wrestler apparently has at least one of them in his name. “We’re presently meeting with a 5-year-old boy three times a week. When he first came in, his speech was difficult to understand even to his family. He is now speaking in four- and fiveword phrases, and he’s revealing a sense of humor no one knew he had before. He makes people laugh and smile every day! “I’ve practiced speech therapy for more than 20 years. Some of the first kids I helped have now graduated from college and are successful CONTINUED >

The PROP Shop RESALE WITH PURPOSE

That would fall under the purviews of religion and philosophy, on which there are far better authorities than our humble staff. But I can tell you how to feel like a good person: commit acts of kindness toward those around you, and know your existence benefits others. Doing so gives you purpose no matter your purviews. The PROP Shop makes it easy to do immediate good for your neighbors in Eden Prairie and Chanhassen. The non-profit resale store offers quality clothing, furniture and household goods for sale to anyone who would like them. The store is for the benefit of the PROP Shop’s Family Services, which supply essentials to local families in need. “The things people need the most are the same things they use the most,” said Vicki Bomben, operations manager for the PROP Shop. “Sheets, blankets, pots, pans, dishes, silverware, clothes, kids’ clothes; our Family Services provide them all free of charge. High demand means we are always in need of these goods immediately. If you have a pot stashed away that you can’t remember last using, this could finally be its year to cook someone’s Christmas dinner. Just bring it into our donation center! “Demand for our Family Services isn’t just high. Recent economic affairs mean it’s sadly also increasing. We gave out 257 beds in 2022. We gave out 244 during this year’s first 8 months alone.”

The PROP Shop does not expect such magnanimity as to receive dozens of donated beds each month. And there, in my opinion, is what makes it so great. If you would like to feel what Victor Hugo described as “a penny’s worth of paradise,” then the PROP Shop is always available to graciously accept your generous cash donation. “The PROP Shop has helped over 3,300 local families since first opening our doors in 2007,” said Vicki. “Our non-profit could only accomplish that much thanks to our community’s benefactors, who give us the cash we need to buy essentials as soon as our clients request them. We constantly purchase socks, underwear, and other garments that usually aren’t donated – and are seldom in usable condition when they are. “I helped a single mother just recently. Her two daughters had both outgrown their beds, and she, dealing with a health crisis, could not afford new ones. When she first reached out, one of her daughters slept on a plastic bag laid out across the floor. We immediately bought her an air bed, just to hold her over until we could deliver new full-size beds and mattresses for both girls. “The PROP Shop doesn’t only provide necessities. A few months ago a client mentioned to me that she was looking for Legos for her son who really loves Star Wars. Good fortune really had it out for that kid that day, because what comes in half an hour later? A big Star Wars Lego set. I’m told he still plays with it to this day.” The kindness of strangers isn’t limited to donated items and money. The PROP Shop could not have given away almost $4 million worth of necessities over the years without hands-on assistance by more than 3,650 volunteers. CONTINUED >

“When you donate your time to the PROP Shop, you do much more than make a huge, positive impact on the community,” said Vicki. “You become a part of our own little special community as well. I’ve watched many strangers turn into fast friends while volunteering together. It’s easier to form bonds with people when you share the same goal of helping others. “It’s also easy to strike up a conversation over some of the more interesting things that flow through our donation center. Historic diaries aren’t an uncommon find here. The other day it was all hands on deck figuring out the purpose of some alien-looking doodad. (The committee ruled it is a hot dog slicer.) One time one of our volunteers, Ace, who was then in her nineties, noticed a certain book that looked like one which had belonged to her father. Further inspection revealed the inscription that proved it was in fact his!” This holiday season, give clothes, cookware, furniture, and everything else people need to the people who need them most. Brighter Days Family Grief Center

Bringing Children's Grief Awareness Day to Minnesota

One in 15 Minnesotan children will experience the loss of a parent or sibling before they turn 18. Their grief is often overlooked and minimized within their schools and peer circles. Brighter Days Family Grief Center, an Eden Prairie non-profit organization that has served grieving children since 2017, is on a mission to change that. “We provide free support and services to children and young adults who are grieving the terminal diagnosis or death of a loved

one,” said Carolyn Kinzel, founder and executive director of Brighter Days. “In addition to free grief counseling and support groups, we host Camp Erin Twin Cities, a nationally recognized youth grief retreat that combines education and emotional support with fun, traditional camp activities. It’s a safe environment where children ages 6 to 17 can explore their feelings, learn essential coping skills, and connect with other grievers who ‘get it.’”

Although it is observed nationally on the third Thursday of November each year, Children's Grief Awareness Day didn’t receive official recognition in Minnesota until Governor Tim Walz signed a proclamation in 2021 submitted by Carolyn herself. “I am grateful to our governor for granting us a statewide platform to help expand Brighter Days’ mission of promoting greater awareness and sensitivity to children's grief.” The framed proclamation proudly hangs CONTINUED > NOVEMB ER 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . When my son lost his father in middle school, not having friends or teachers acknowledge his grief was extremely painful for him. We hear this so often from the kids we work with, and that was the motivation to make sure children’s grief awareness became an actual initiative within our state. Children deserve to feel supported, not isolated, by the people surrounding them at a time in their life that is confusing and scary.” Brighter Days’ holistic model of care ensures that all family members have a support system after the death of a loved one. “If we are only supporting our youth, and not the people who care for them and who are also grieving,

then we are not acknowledging the deep familial scars that can happen within. This is why Brighter Days provides support for all family members, including extended family members. Brighter Days was awarded matches of $25,000 to help sustain their free youth programming. “People have an unending capacity to help grieving children, but are understandably uncertain of how to help. Brass candlesticks with brown taper candles create a simple and elegant centerpiece. Use familiar accents such as amber jars filled with dried grass foliage and brass pheasants to adorn the table. To add a little character to the table, use a recycled wine bottle as a vase. Are you planning to dine al fresco this fall? Create an earthy, fall garden party on the porch by using natural, organic elements, greenery and flowers. To make a statement, create a floral chandelier by hanging flowers upside down above the table using fishing wire (if your space allows). The centerpiece that runs down the length of this table consists of fresh eucalyptus with gold candlesticks and a ceramic pumpkin vase filled with flowers placed on top a tree trunk charger. Adding small pumpkins and fresh flowers along the center gives a little extra character.
