Each of the child-centric organizations featured in this cutely illustrated issue is helping kids in their own special way. The Healthy Kids Running Series teaches them camaraderie, sportsmanship and the competitive spirit. Yellow Brick Road Early Childhood Development Center provides them with a nurturing place to grow and learn in while mom and dad are out giving life everything they’ve got, and the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools helps our entire community to elevate our kids’ educations. You want them to spend their formative days in a place where they’re encouraged to learn, grow, make equally silly friends, and gain the confidence they’ll need to excel over the course of their entire lifetime.

Yellow Brick Road Early Childhood Development Center is that daycare and preschool. Whether their attentive teachers are helping babies as young as six weeks to develop their sensory thinking and motor skills, or preparing five-year-olds for a brilliant year of kindergarten, they’re providing the best childcare Eden Prairie, Plymouth, Minnetonka and Maple Grove have to offer. Jessica Johnsen co-owns Yellow Brick Road alongside Kylie Schrader. She was just recently named Acquisition International’s Influential CEO of the Year, a distinction she owes to her unique background in childcare and business. “I’ve always loved kids,” said Jessica. “Growing up I babysat my cousins and worked at the Sunday school in my little hometown in Iowa, always hoping to become a teacher one day. But I also looked up to my mother, so I went to college to become an accountant like her. “Fortunately I was able to pursue both of my ambitions by working at Colorado State University Early Childhood Center, a lab preschool which provides quality education to children and student teachers alike. I soon asked my parents if I could add a second major. They told me to do whatever I wanted, so long as I finished doing it in four years. “Very few people have degrees in business and childhood development, although they combine perfectly in my line of work. The accountant in me strives to keep childcare affordable. I believe every parent should be able to afford the all-important investment in their child’s future. “Even so, I refuse to restrict our budget for selecting, training and coaching our staff. Yellow Brick Road’s people are our greatest expenditure. Caring for our teachers ensures that we provide the supportive, patient, encouraging and compassionate environment children flourish best in. “We spend a tremendous amount of time developing children’s social-emotional skills, as those are key to becoming a good member of society. We help our students learn how to sit down and play nicely with their classmates, and not to have a meltdown because of something

someone else did. The world needs more people who know how to make friends, and who understand that no one else is in control of their emotions save for themselves. “In that sense we’re not just teaching children what to learn. We’re teaching them how to learn. “Children who grow with us learn their ABCs, their 123s and their colors, of course, although we do give our teachers free license to develop whichever curriculums their students will find most engaging. For example, just behind our location in Eden Prairie flows a stream that attracts lots of natural wildlife. The children there are fascinated by the foxes and birds that come to visit (and the turtles they’re constantly reminded not to bother), so they love learning about our animal friends. On the other hand, the students at our Minnetonka location recently witnessed a nearby construction project, so they’ve all become experts on bulldozers and dump trucks. “I’m most proud of our work whenever I see our students expressing empathy. We teach a boy on the spectrum at one of our locations. He’s pretty

nonverbal, and has a harder time doing basic activities. I saw one of the boy’s classmates poke him during one of my daily on-site visits, just to get a rise out of him – but three others immediately stepped forward to ask him to stop. Our kids’ willingness to help each other out just amazes me. “But we can’t take credit for all the kindness our children bring to our classrooms. Eden Prairie is Yellow Brick Road’s newest location, and the people here have all been so gracious toward us. Several members of the community have already visited to present at our classrooms, and many more drive by the playground just to wave and say hello. Wildfire checked into the vet in a terrible state last winter. The sled dog’s hind leg had been shattered during a hit and run with a snowmobile. Wildfire’s owner, Ryan Reddington of Reddington Mushing, had brought him to multiple emergency vets, who provided astronomical estimates for surgery on the elite canine athlete. That’s when he was referred to Mission Animal Hospital. It took two surgeries – one of which spanned a grueling eight hours – with Dr. Hadley, a board-certified veterinary surgeon on staff at Mission, but the team was able to put Wildfire’s leg back together. At first they were uncertain whether he would ever be able to walk. Now six months later, it appears the dog will pull a sled again one day. “As a dog and cat lover my entire life, I’ve had pets with significant medical needs before,” said Christine Durand, development director for Mission Animal Hospital. “I’ve thankfully been able to afford veterinary care for them whenever they needed it, though my heart has always ached for anyone who hasn’t shared that same good fortune. “Learning about Mission was a big aha moment for me. I realized it is a vital veterinary resource to anyone who believes their pet is a part of their family, and I couldn’t have been more excited to join that mission. “Our non-profit organization provides access to veterinary care to people who may not otherwise have been able to afford it. We keep our costs as low as possible by working in a high-volume model. Our 16 veterinarians treat about 25,000 dogs and cats every year, and our urgent care is available seven days a week. That makes us one of the busiest veterinary hospitals in the state. “We’re also grateful to receive donations from people who not only want to help pets in need, but also the people who love them. They make our two-tier pricing system possible. Those who meet certain income qualifications are welcome to reduced-fee pricing through our Mission Program. Those who are willing and able to pay full price are also perfectly welcome at Mission, and their fees directly support our ability to serve low-income families. We additionally provide payment plans, which can be a game changer to any family living paycheck to paycheck. “We provide complete care for dogs and cats. Our wellness services include vaccinations, microchipping and treatment for minor ailments. Our walk-in urgent care services are available to pets who are seriously ill or injured. Our doctors perform general surgery, such as spays, neuters and dental procedures, as well as advanced surgery for more serious and nonroutine cases.

“We frequently help pets who ate something they shouldn’t have: aspirin, corn cobs, bird seed, baby bottle nipples and even the occasional doll’s head. We just recently saved a cat who had managed to scoff down a beading needle, which had pierced his throat and entered his chest cavity. Luckily, he is going to fully recover. “This summer we treated a three-year-old Persian named Peggy Sue. She had been neglected in her previous home, and was brought to a shelter in such poor condition that she was placed in hospice. While the family that adopted Peggy Sue was prepared to help her pass away in as much comfort as possible, they decided to give her one last chance with Mission Animal Hospital. “We worked on this cat – who was matted and covered in infections and in such great pain that she couldn’t stand, but whose bright eyes light up such a peculiar little pushed-in face, and whose tongue sticks out in exactly the most adorable way, and

whose amazing whiskers all curl straight outward – and we saved her. Peggy Sue is now enjoying life with her loving new family.” Mission cares for people as well as their pets. Their client services are staffed by a full-time social worker, who offers support to clients who are navigating trauma, grief, and the complex decisions involved in their pets’ medical care. They may also help families access other resources, such as food or housing. Mission Animal Hospital was founded as a new model of veterinary care. They are now on the verge of a national expansion. “Our dream is for every community to have a place like this,” said Christine. “I honestly believe that the future of pet care has already begun right here in Eden Prairie.” Mission Animal Hospital is located at 10100 Viking Drive #150 in Eden Prairie. healthy kids running series “Charlie has loved running ever since he was old enough to run away from me,” said Jennifer Knapp of her four-year-old son. “He’s always been pure energy and a bit of a competition nut, and he loves playing soccer and baseball.” “And football!” added Charlie with more enthusiasm than I have ever heard during my career interviewing business owners. “And T-ball!” Charlie proceeded to inform his mother that the household was undergoing a severe shortage of sidewalk chalk, and also that his father had unjustly limited the size of the stone with which he could play hopscotch. Jennifer assured Charlie that the universe has a way of sorting problems like these out, and that he should continue playing. The hyperkinetic thumping of size 4T shoes faded away as Jennifer continued our call. “We entered Charlie in the Healthy Kids Running Series in Woodbury during the summer of 2020 as a way to burn up even more of that youthful energy. He loved it so much, but as Eden Prairie residents we didn’t really enjoy spending that much time on 494. “I looked for a race closer to home but couldn’t find one, so I called the Healthy Kids Running Series national office to ask if they could begin a chapter somewhere in the west metro. It wasn’t long afterward until my husband Jeromy and I became community coordinators for the newly founded Eden Prairie chapter.

“Every race has amazing energy. We have moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and even teachers show up to root for every kid until they cross the finish line.”
“The Healthy Kids Running Series gives children aged two to 14 the opportunity to compete in footraces against their peers – and I use the word ‘compete’ loosely. When they’re too young to have gone to kindergarten, we only keep track of where they place. We begin timing them when they’re older, and the results are amazing. By the end of the five-week program, many children have shaved 20 to 30 seconds off their first race time. But however well a child does, we always give them encouragement and a medal for all their hard work. “The length of a Healthy Kids Running Series course depends on the participant’s age as well. a 50-yard dash, and children in fourth through eighth grade run a full mile. We know that running in a circle is tedious, even with our adult attention spans, so we lay out our courses on a single path. When we meet at Staring Lake Park we start at the lacrosse field, go through the disc golf course, wind around the Green Acres Event Center, and finally return to the finish line back where we started. “We also know that running on concrete can have disastrous implications for a little kid who hasn’t quite finished fine-tuning their motor skills. That’s why everyone runs on grass, cross country style. Just last week I saw an adorable toddler do a massive faceplant, but she got back up and kept on running with a big smile across her face. My ‘mom sense’ was so relieved! “And you know, little moments like those are what make the Healthy Kids Running Series so rewarding for children. Kids who used to get frustrated soon learn to just give every race everything they’ve got as they foster their senses of determination and accomplishment. Little ones like my Charlie learn that sports aren’t all about winning. They’re about cheering others on and lifting them up, making great new friends, and living a healthy lifestyle together. (Of course, if Charlie ever gets drafted by the Vikings, I’ll remind him that sports are in fact about winning sometimes, too.) “Every race has amazing energy. We have moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors, and even teachers show up to root for every kid until they cross the finish line. On the second week we partnered with Bachman’s, who graciously gave all the moms pink carnations on Mother’s Day. I openly admit that I was thrown out of a zoo once. I was about eight or nine years old and left unattended at a little zoo in Massachusetts. (I believe my grandmother wanted to go to Filene’s.) At this zoo you could buy big, flavorless crackers to feed to the llamas and donkeys, and I, an abnormally empathetic and dumb child, felt sorry for the black bear who had to go without any crackers. I climbed over the fence to hand a zwieback to the bear, who did seem genuinely interested in the gesture, when a zookeeper spotted me, administered a sternly worded lecture about arms and their detachability, and then saw me out. I learned a very important lesson that day: Zoos are far more fun when you can get up close to the animals. And pet them, ideally, which you can do to every creature great and small that the Hasse Family Mobile Petting Zoo will bring to your front lawn.

“Our petting zoo began in 2009,” said Greg Hasse, owner of the Hasse Family Mobile Petting Zoo. “At the time my oldest was attending North Dakota State University, where classes end two weeks later than other schools. That meant all the summer jobs were already taken by the time his summer started. “It was very important to me that all my kids receive a business education. You don’t learn responsibility, customer service, why it’s important to be on time, and how to communicate to people face-to-face in high school. My wife Keri and I both grew up on farms, and we had a little land, so when we learned that a lady up in St. Cloud was selling her petting zoo we believed it would be a perfect fit for our family business. “Soon we had one miniature horse, one miniature donkey, four sheep, four goats, two potbellied pigs, and two turkeys named Christmas and Thanksgiving.
We provided 20 petting zoos during our first year in business, and over time my other three children all pitched in to help as well. We’re now attending the better part of 175 events every year, and our menagerie has grown to 13 miniature horses, ponies and donkeys, four full-size horses, 25 sheep, 25 goats, two alpacas, two llamas, five potbellied pigs, 15 rabbits, and 50 or so chickens. Our kids may have all moved out, but our home never exactly became quiet! “We do things a little differently than other petting zoos, where you have to reach through a fence. We bring children in with the animals for a much more up close and personal experience. We just don’t allow feeding while you’re in there. That can make the animals a little … how should I put this … ‘pushy.’ “People often ask how our animals can be so calm and gentle. Well, a lot of them have done two, three, even four hundred petting zoos during their careers. They’re just used to being the center of attention – or retired from the zoo circuit prematurely, if they haven’t got the temperament for it. Most of our sheep and goats are content to lie down while toddlers cuddle up next to them. I have watched the mini horse stand by as a dozen little girls braided her mane all at once. Our mini horses and donkeys don’t kick even when they’re swarmed by children. Do teach your kid never to stand behind a horse or donkey, but we don’t worry if they stand behind one of ours! “Although they’re calm, our animals do have big personalities. We have our own ram, so I often bring a three or four day old lamb to hold and bottle-feed. That’s a lot of fun for people to see! We have one pig who likes to squeal whenever he’s hungry, which he is always because he’s a pig. (We don’t bring him along anymore.) Our animals aren’t bothered by wheelchairs or people with special needs, so we often take our bunnies to nursing homes where they can sit on the residents’ laps. One time one of the goats got a little too curious and chewed through a wheelchair alarm cable, but that was a simple enough repair. “Elvis, the miniature llama, doesn’t mind getting petted on his neck and shoulders, but he doesn’t like having his butt touched or he will spit. Elvis has his own sign to bring this to the kids’ attention. Of course, many kids would actually like to see Elvis spit, and to his credit Elvis never disappoints them. “A lot of little kids these days don’t even have a dog or cat at home. When they finally see an animal in person, they might not even know what it is. A few kids scream bloody murder when they see it start to move, but they’ll usually warm up to something so cute. Most kids are fearless and lose their minds trying to figure out what to pet first. CONTINUED >

“A few years ago we provided a petting zoo at a birthday party in the Twin Cities. When we began packing up and getting the animals back in their trailers, the four-year-old started balling. Mom and dad couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him — until he whimpered ‘I thought they were mine to keep!’” The Hasse Family Mobile Petting Zoo has two trucks and trailers for their furry party guests, and a third trailer devoted to bringing pony rides. Your dog’s love for you is boundless. So too is your cat’s, even if they sometimes choose to express it by digging their claws into your arm. With it our vets are able to detect diseases beneath the gum line, which are normally invisible without special equipment. Dental radiography is especially helpful to cats, which are regrettably highly susceptible to tooth resorption, a condition where a tooth is quite literally absorbed back into the body. Cats are stoic animals which do not like to show weakness by expressing pain. That can be an admirable quality to have, although it can also make it difficult to discern what exactly is bothering cats without the help of dental X-rays! “We recently purchased a new blood pressure machine, which we will offer as part of our wellness screening services. Many people never think to have their pet’s blood pressure taken, which is forgivable considering that many people never think to have their own blood pressure taken as well. But by making access to blood pressure testing so convenient, we’re able to detect and preemptively treat many conditions before they can damage our patients’ eyes, kidneys and other vital organs.

A child’s capacity for learning is infinite. Sadly, the funding available for their education is anything but. That is why the Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools (FEPS) proudly supports students, teachers and staff across our district as they implement innovative classroom programs that bring learning to life and ensure our future leaders are college and career ready. FEPS awards grants to teachers and community organizations who are passionate about helping students of all ages. The non-profit organization also provides scholarships to high school seniors, and they host the annual Red & Black Gala during which they recognize individuals who best embody their mission through the Legacy Awards. “At its heart, our mission is simple,” said Dr. Lisa Sisinni, executive director for FEPS. “We want teachers and students to follow their dreams without having to worry about the limits created by budgets. Thanks to the boundless generosity of the Eden Prairie community, we’re coming closer to realizing that mission every day. “If you walk past Prairie View Elementary, you’ll likely notice the splendidly maintained little garden in their courtyard. It exists because one teacher saw an opportunity to teach her students about ecology and botany without ever having to leave school grounds. She requested a small amount of money in order to bring her idea to life, but the garden she and her students grew serves as an excellent example of the difference an educator can make with just the tiniest extra budget. “We don’t solely award grants to teachers. So long as they have an innovative idea that will help Eden Prairie’s students — and the ability to implement it — anyone can receive a grant from FEPS. For example, we recently partnered with the Eden Prairie Noon Rotary Club to grow the organization’s My Book Day Program. It is a beloved program in our school district, in which every first grader is brought to the high school’s auditorium to watch a presentation and receive their own book to keep. If you speak with any of our high school seniors, they’ll almost certainly remember the book they received 12 years ago and still have it!

“Members of our local business community often step up to support our students as well. Eden Prairie High School has a program called Eagle Vision News, where students report stories of interest to their peers over live broadcast. Unfortunately, the program’s teleprompters became so obsolete that students had to read their reports from their notebooks – hardly the best way to hone the skills they’ll one day need as professional journalists! “When FEPS learned about this need, we brought it straight to 3M, a company which is phenomenal for their commitment to furthering education opportunities in any city they proudly call home. Their team took immediate interest in Eagle Vision News, and even sent one of their representatives to meet with the students in person. As a result, 3M donated the $5,000 needed to buy new state-ofthe-art teleprompters.

“As the mother of a special needs student myself, the TASSEL Transition Program is especially near and dear to my heart. It prepares students with disabilities to achieve independence, secure rewarding employment, and become fully participating members of their community. Last year TASSEL came to us with the idea of opening a fullscale screen-printing shop, where students would learn how to design, create and market T-shirts. Now that we have invested in the necessary equipment, TASSEL students have already produced their first line of officially branded merchandise and are implementing ways to serve local businesses for their promotional materials. “Sometimes FEPS makes a difference by focusing on a single individual. We awarded the Griffiths Family Scholarship for Health Sciences to Neetij Krishnan, a local Fulbright Scholar who has already done an internship with the National Institutes of
Health and is determined to become a doctor. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Harold Griffiths and his children, Neetij attended and graduated from St. Olaf College and has now been accepted to medical school. He is well on his way toward achieving his dream. “FEPS is an admittedly small group of volunteers. But we have a passion for educational excellence, and we appreciate just how dearly our teachers and our community care about our youth, so we work hard to make big dreams come true.
