SHAKOPEE BUILDING A HIGH-IMPACT ENTREPRENEUR COMMUNITY
16
F IN A N CIA L BU Z Z | L IFE + CULTURE
Shakopee is part of the reason why Eden Prairie is such a good place to call home with easy access to Canterbury Park, Valleyfair and a beautiful riverside downtown to provide entertainment. There are more than 24,000 jobs that Eden Prairie’s own are welcome to commute to. And, someday soon, there will be many more high-impact entrepreneurs to help our community glow even brighter. The city of Shakopee launched a strategic program to grow these companies in 2021. Michael Kerski, director of planning and development reached out to John Moore in Greenville, South Carolina to help. Kerski and Moore had worked together in Greenville on building the NEXT program. The program there grew from eight founders to more than 100 companies over ten years. Moore currently runs Momenteum Strategies, which helps communities compete in the innovation economy. Many times, members had previously solved similar problems and could answer tough questions, or they had connections to other professionals who could help. The program helped them realize they weren’t alone on their islands. They became part of a league of peers. “The network worked. Over the following decade, it grew to well over 100 members strong. With their support we built three different entrepreneurship centers totaling over 100,000 square feet and filled with fellow high-impact entrepreneurs. We started an annual venture capital conference in a city which offered no venture capital at the time. And we provided member entrepreneurs with day-to-day support as they grew their businesses, created jobs, and made Greenville’s economy increasingly robust,” said Moore. In Shakopee, Moore was able to capitalize on programs already being run by the Scott County’s CDA First Stop Shop - the Fast-Track Challenge has already identified several startup companies including Steelhead Outdoors which won last year. Founded by friends Corey Meyer and Charlie Pehrson, the pair looked at the gun safe market and found that most are so heavy they are often left behind when people move. The two developed a new system that allows safes to be shipped in pieces that can be assembled at home and taken apart, all while providing superior security and fire protection. Steelhead safes are highly customizable and have found new market niches including providing doors for safe rooms and specialized safes for crypto currency drives. Steelhead was named as a semifinalist for the MN Cup run by the Carlson School. There are not only startups in the group. Several more established companies are participating and

include several serial entrepreneurs, including the founder of Rollerblade and a custom boat manufacturer. Unlike other entrepreneur groups in the region that focus on apps or medtech, there is not a singular focus beyond companies being innovative and having the potential for high growth. The more established companies still face issues like securing intellectual property, marketing, sales and how to retain employees. A more seasoned group of entrepreneurs runs Wolf Tooth Components, founded by Mike Pfeiffer, Brendan Moore and Dan Dittmer. All three were mechanical engineers working at a high-tech company in Shakopee but all loved cycling. Between them they have over 50 years’ experience riding bikes. Wolf Tooth started in Pfeiffer’s house while Moore and Dittmer kept their day jobs. Wolf Tooth quickly moved from a passion to a business and is now renowned for developing products that resolve common issues on bikes. Many of their parts are made in house and sold around the world. The three later created Otso Cycles, a custom bike manufacturer. The company, once three, now has more than 75 employees. Moore said “I found a lot of energy, and eagerness to sit down with like-minded people. The newly formed Shakopee entrepreneur’s network does not yet have an official name, but its members are already allied, already collaborating, and already putting the south metro area well on its way to becoming a thriving hub of innovation and entrepreneurship.” “Shakopee’s economy is primed for sustained growth,” said Kerski. “We currently have a strong industrial, entertainment

and housing base. We have several headquarters including Entrust, Emerson’s Rosemount, KEB America and Cherne. The city council just approved a $5 million budget to renovate SandVenture Aquatic Park, and we just received another $3.5 million from the federal government to begin stabilization of the city’s Minnesota Riverbank.” “We recently applied for a grant to build our first innovation center, which will be dubbed ‘The Hub.’ The three-story downtown facility will have offices, manufacturing space, 3D printing technology, a full commercial kitchen, and classrooms where Minnesota State University, Mankato will provide courses for entrepreneurs along with specialized training for local employers. “The Hub will also serve as the nexus for the high-impact entrepreneur group we are assembling. Even without official headquarters, their monthly meetings are now in full swing and forging real, productive partnerships. At this pace I expect it won’t be long until Shakopee reclaims our status as a booming center of economic exchange, just like we were after our establishment in the mid-19th century. If you would like to come closer to Shakopee’s entrepreneurial spirit in person, but you haven’t got a groundbreaking business plan, then you can have the next best thing – beer – during the Downtown Shakopee Tap 2022 Brewfest on September 10th where innovation meets beer. Clear Shores ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY. LOCALLY OWNED. IMMEDIATE RESULTS.
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Weeding the garden is hard work. Weeding where you cannot breathe is decidedly less convenient. This is why life is not all wine and roses for lakefront property owners, whose lakebeds turn into milfoil forests without regular upkeep. That was Max Lauerman and Austin Roberts’ realization when they came up with the idea for Clear Shores in 2018. They pitched the business as juniors during a Shark Tank style competition held at Minnetonka High School. Impressed by the enterprising youths’ extensive research on invasive species and 30-page business plan, the judges declared Max and Austin the winners.

Could their winning idea for a business turn into an actual winning business? Max and Austin determined to find out when they partnered with Zack Navratil, their former classmate, to co-found Clear Shores LLC last year. “I have to be honest with you,” Zack confided. “I didn’t take school nearly as seriously as my business partners. I spent my only year in college partying, and I got a landscaping job soon afterward. You can imagine my readiness when I was offered to join Clear Shores. That was my opportunity to spend more time at my favorite place – the water – while helping to build a company from the ground up. Here I discovered my passion for providing great customer service!
“We’ve developed a truly environmentally friendly solution to lakebed management. Our commitment goes beyond thoroughly cleaning our equipment between uses. We also refuse to use ‘milfoil munchers’: giant machines which disturb native fish populations, send weed fragments floating off in every direction, and create a lot of noise pollution. We also don’t use chemicals. Even weed killer that’s been branded as ‘safe’ can harm fish and the good native plants, and it ultimately just turns underwater weeds into dead sludge. Any Minnesotan will tell you they don’t enjoy swimming in muck! “That’s why we do everything by hand. Our PADI certified dive crews go straight to the lake bottom. Wherever we find invasive plants like Eurasian

millfoil, curly-leaf pondweed, purple loosestrife and flowering rush, we pull them out right by their roots. Our process cannot eliminate weeds for good, but it does significantly decrease weed density while discouraging future growth. We finally wheelbarrow our ‘harvest’ to our truck so we can drive it to The Mulch Store in Minnetrista. That lets the water weeds do something productive: become mulch and fertilizer. “Once we have hand-cleared a lakebed, we weed and tidy up the surrounding beach. We’ve pulled everything out of the sand you can imagine: tires, broken bottles, engine blocks, an old septic tank (which was graciously empty), and even a whole wooden boat. Our waterfront clients also count on us for invasive zebra mussel removal, as well as for dock insertion, removal and general maintenance. Our divers even perform lost item searches, and can’t wait for the day when we reunite someone with their wedding band. “With so many lakes surrounding our Excelsior headquarters, we’ve already found a healthy demand for our waterfront maintenance services. In addition to over 100 homeowners, we have so far worked for Howard’s Point Marina, Caribbean Marina and Gas Dock, and The Mist Apartment Homes on Lake Minnetonka. “Our goal is to grow Clear Shores until it one day becomes national – ‘the TruGreen of lakefront properties.’ We’re a little apprehensive about expanding into the Southern United States, though. It’s beautiful down there, but scuba certification classes don’t teach you how to fight off hungry gators. “We currently have one dozen employees. Supporting a roster that size means we can’t exclusively focus on lakefronts, but that’s okay by us. So long as we’re working outside, we’re content.

“We were once dubbed ‘mercenary grandsons’ by one of our clients. They were joking about how the Clear Shores team will take care of any landscaping projects our customers could need. We’re the ones to rely on for lawn care, mulching, spring and fall clean-ups, snow removal, soil aeration, sprinkler system maintenance, wood stacking, hornet nest removal – if it’s hard work and you can name it, we’re happy to do it for you. It doesn’t even matter if it’s not the original reason we came to your home! “We’re just a bunch of guys who are eager to earn our places in the world, and we sure do work like it. All of our advertising so far has consisted of doorknocking and word of mouth. We’ll beat any other landscaping or general labor company’s prices, too, so you’re always guaranteed the lowest bid so long as you ask Clear Shores.
“Do I love what I do? All of our full-time employees are also our lifelong friends, and we spend every day helping Minnesotans enjoy more beautiful properties. I have to be honest with you,” Zack confided. “It doesn’t get any better than this.”
Do you need lake weed removal? Do you need beach maintenance? Do you need landscaping? Do you need snow plowing and shoveling? Do you need a team of handsome young men to do whatever you ask at your property, within reason? Then you need Clear Shores, which combines distinctly Midwestern creativity and industriousness to any homeowner’s benefit. Dinner Theatres Entertaining You! 28
B ACK STAGE | ENTERTA INME NT
Herbert and Carolyn Bloomberg originally intended to bring a little bit of Broadway to Minnesota. When the couple cut the ribbon on Chanhassen Dinner Theatres in 1968, they were determined to turn the Twin Cities into its own capital of the musical theatre world. To the Bloombergs’ delight, the Minnesotan approach to musical theatre had an auspicious start. Their company’s 1971 production of Fiddler on the Roof was a smash hit, and I Do! I Do!, which debuted during the same year, would become the longest-running play to feature its original cast in American history. Over time Chanhassen Dinner Theatres added a comedy club, a concert series, special events and presentations, and the ever popular Brindisi’s Pub. Today it encompasses 90,000 square feet and employs 300. Yet despite having grown so much over the past half century, every experience Chanhassen Dinner Theatres offers remains distinctly Minnesotan. “That’s what makes us so unique,” said Kris Howland, public relations director for Chanhassen Dinner Theatres. “Our professional dinner theatre company is completely Minnesota-made. We employ our own designers and artistic teams to create our scenery, costumes and props. Our musicians are all members of the Twin Cities Musicians Union, and our local actors belong to the same union which Broadway players must join. This ensures that the talent on our stages is equivalent to what you would find at any Broadway production – and that is to say it is the pinnacle of the performing arts. “Honoring our commitment to local and professional talent demands more work, but you cannot compromise when your only goal is to present outstanding musical theatre. Our current production of Footloose, which is scheduled to run through January of next year, comes to mind. I love this musical because there is so much substance to its story. It’s about joy, living your life, fighting for what’s right, and building bridges between older and younger generations. “But as much as it pains me to refer to the 1980s – which wasn’t too long ago – as a ‘period,’ Footloose is also a period piece. We know we can’t give our audience a genuine

feeling of nostalgia without paying close attention to every detail. That’s why our costume designer Rich Hamson discovered a clothing store which closed during the ‘80s and still had its original inventory in stock. With the exception of a single piece, every prom dress worn by the Footloose cast is vintage. “We’re best known as a dinner theatre, but our entertainment venue truly has something for everyone. Just downstairs from our Main Stage sits the smaller theatre where we host Stevie Ray’s Comedy Cabaret. It features hilarious improv, where the actors make up comedy on the fly as the audience provides suggestions, so no two nights’ shows are ever the same. Stevie Ray’s casual atmosphere and $28 admission price make it the perfect outing for any Friday or Saturday evening. And if you can stop laughing long enough to eat, you can enjoy dinner at Stevie Ray’s as well.

The Murphy Business Team
EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS
ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
Forty five percent of new businesses fail within five years of opening. Only one quarter last longer than 15 years. That’s a big risk, and starting a new business from scratch also demands more energy, responsibility, financing and experience than many investors can fairly lay claim to. Buying an established business is a safer bet. Its product or service has withstood the test of the market. Its brand is already well known. Startup time is minimal, and many if not all of the former owner’s previous customers come alongside the purchase. Financial lenders, which understand risk, are more willing to stake capital in an established business for these very reasons. The advantages of buying an established business aren’t the sole force driving the success of Murphy Business. As one of the largest business brokerage firms in North America, their clients deal in virtually all types of businesses including healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, distribution, food and beverage, retail, and franchises as well as commercial properties. And whether they’re selling a $200,000 sandwich shop or buying a $30 million medical device factory, Murphy Business brokers are driven to create the greatest possible value for their clients. “I joined Murphy Business because I wanted to grow,” said Dan Bauer, who serves his clients in Minnesota alongside his partner Pat Steffl. Dan was the number one Murphy Business broker in 2018, and his was Murphy’s top office in North America last year. “I owned car washes until I became a business broker in 1997, and I specifically chose to work with the brokerage which rewards its members’ ambition the most. I also chose Murphy Business because it represents a network of 130 offices and 300 brokers nationwide. When someone

hires one of us, they hire all of us, which alongside our access to businesses for sale outside of our system assures the best opportunities for our clients. “We deal in privately held businesses. When you buy with Murphy, you do not inherit a board which may not share your vision and strategy. You also get exactly what you pay for. Our brokers implement several different valuation methods based on factors such as discretionary earnings, earnings before interest and taxes, and earnings before interest depreciation and amortization in order to pinpoint a business’s fair market value. Our opinions of value are each 20 pages long, and we’re happy to explain them in terms any layman can understand. “That same attention to detail equally benefits our sellers, who walk a delicate line between parting with excessive equity and alienating potential buyers. As soon as we list a business for sale we feature it on 16 different websites, launch a direct advertising campaign, and begin calling investors who we know are in acquisition mode. Before long we have secured a buyer, at which point we stand by to facilitate every step of the upcoming transaction. “Many of our clients start out as buyers and end up as sellers. A few years ago we helped a gentleman from the corporate world purchase a small manufacturing concern. He paid less for it than he made in one year, and he recently sold it for $5 million. “We’re also here to help buyers who aren’t certain how to proceed. We advise sound decisions once we have better understood our client’s professional and financial goals, and we can refer the attorneys, accountants and bankers who are best qualified to further support them. We can even arrange for the former owner to stay on and train our client as they become familiar with their new industry. It’s all part of the Murphy team’s mission to make your life easier whether you’re buying into a business, cashing out of one – or both.” murphybusiness.com/minnesota

Back in 1991, I received an assignment from the editor of a magazine whose focus was the islands of the world. “Take your canoe to the Boundary Waters,” she said. “Go for a week or more. And every night, camp out on an island.” It seemed an odd assignment, for a magazine that usually devoted its pages to tropical paradises. And the “camp on islands” angle struck me as just a bit gimmicky. But I took the job, took along a friend, and took nine days to do it right. Along the way, I came to understand the editor’s idea: The Boundary Waters are themselves an island, a world of their own, moated off from the rest of the planet as surely and securely as any speck of land in a tropical sea. More securely, in fact: You can’t jet in for a getaway, you can’t book a suite with a water view, and there’s no one serving drinks on the beach. The Boundary Waters – officially, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness – are the pristine heart of Superior National Forest. Their million-plus acres and 1,100 lakes (more than one-tenth of Minnesota’s alleged 10,000) define what I’ve always felt is the signature landscape of North America. Africa has its Serengeti, Australia its vast Outback, South America its Amazon rainforest. North America, for all its bayous and prairies, its deserts and mountains, is best represented by the North Woods, the great boreal forest of conifer and birch dappled with the cold blue lakes of the two-billion-year-old granite of the Canadian Shield. To traverse the North Woods by paddle and portage is to breathe the spirit of our continent, and to hear its loons is to listen to the ancient beating of its heart. Paddling and portaging are what you’ll do in the Boundary Waters: the “Canoe” in “Canoe Area Wilderness” means just that, as it does in Ontario’s adjoining Quetico Provincial Park. Here, where motors are prohibited on all but a few lakes, the loons are louder than the boats. And portages? On our ’91 trip, we lost count of how many times we hefted the canoe and our Duluth packs for overland treks CONTINUED >

– some short, one about a mile – and on our last day out, we tallied eight portages linking a skein of as many lakes. True, we’d chosen a particularly arduous loop, which began and ended at the entry point where we’d parked our car. But there’s no such thing as a snooze of a trip through the Boundary Waters. But that doesn’t mean you can’t snooze along the way, either literally, or in a metaphoric dream state, suspended outside your daily obligations (don’t bother to bring your phone, as there are few places it’ll work). You can remain at a designated site for up to two weeks, and take a break from progressing on your route by fishing for bass, walleye, and lake trout; drifting about near camp with only an occasional dip of your paddle; or doing nothing at all. I well remember, after just such a morning, lying half awake in the cool green shade of our tent, listening to the wind rushing through the trees. The sides of the tent puffed softly in and out with the breeze, like sails. Being on our island was like being on a great, silent ship, sailing gently and aimlessly with all the other island-ships across a bright blue world made of lake and sky. And at night, especially on a clear night when there are as many stars on the water as there are in the sky, there’s the chance of seeing the Northern Lights. The fact that there are prescribed entry points, along with registration requirements, camping permit fees, and maximum group sizes (nine people, four canoes or kayaks) might seem to undermine the idea of the Boundary Waters as a place detached from civilization. But, ironically, the rules are what keep things wild. A limited number of people are permitted at each entry, each day, and campsites aren’t on top of each other. Along some of the more rigorous routes, even in peak season (July and August, although my preference is either early autumn or that magic spring window between ice-out and black flies) you might be able to count paddlers you meet on one hand, even on a multi-day excursion. I recalled that solitude in my magazine story after our trip. “We felt.” I wrote, “like we owned Minnesota in the 18th century.” The Boundary Waters, then and today, are an island in time, as well as an island on the map.

Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes! You can also find video demonstrations for each movement within the app and a community of like-minded individuals who are doing the same workouts around the globe.
