LIFESTYLE LETTER
The Annual Ladies’ Issue
May 2022 PUBLISHER
John Lee | john.lee@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
David Scheller | david.scheller@citylifestyle.com
Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle Readers, Some people might say our annual ladies’ issue is a little late, seeing as how Women's History Month is March. I would just argue that we’re ten months ahead of schedule! This issue features two local family-owned businesses where women call the shots, either of which creates a beverage that civilization could not exist without. First we have Fat Pants Brewing Co., which began as a father and daughter garage experiment and developed into a nexus of the Eden Prairie community. Now I am no beer connoisseur, but I can tell when something has been brewed by someone who does it for the love of their craft. You may feel the same way if you have a pint of Space Monkey double IPA. Next up we have Smith Coffee & Cafe, an unskippable spot for hot java and cinnamon bun pick-me-ups, sandwiches for people who love sandwiches, and gourmet pizza on Wednesday evenings. Go for the sublime vittles, stay for the Smith-Douglas-More House’s historic ambiance – or the patios’ outdoorsy ambiance! Finally we have two experts in their fields. Jean Miller’s Full Sail Solutions offers an equally innovative and effective tool to help companies develop stronger cultures. She has identified SELECTTORS® – the things which matter most to any organization, regardless of its industry. Heather Croke of Boulay Financial Advisors dispenses sound guidance to anyone who would ask for it, making her women’s guide to financial planning a mustread for anyone who has (and would like to have more). Wealth management is gender-neutral! As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing on our magazine’s pages! Best regards,

Fat Pants Brewing Co. Don Anderson is a hard man to buy presents for. This makes life difficult for a lot of people, because Don is a father of six. Eager to impress their father all the same, Don’s kids banded together a few years ago to buy him a homebrewing kit. In spite of all seven Andersons’ combined efforts, the inaugural batch was dreadful: sickly sweet, barely carbonated, and altogether lacking in the qualities a liquid must possess in order to qualify as “beer.” But one of Don’s children didn’t give up. Elizabeth Anderson Schmidt and her father began obsessing over specific gravity, sparging, fermentation, bottle sterilization, and all the other arcane arts of brewing. They packed their garage with brewers’ paraphernalia until it began to resemble Dr. Frankenstein’s lab. They studied books, picked apart recipes, and attended classes for the love of their craft. And for all their hard work, what did they get? Beer so divine that it could unite an entire community. “As we sat in our garage drinking our beers, we’d often joke that we should start our own brewery,” said Elizabeth. Wilder ideas have been conceived out of beer drinking. “I finally took all that talk to heart, and incorporated Fat Pants Brewing Co., LLC as my present for Father’s Day in 2017.” The name of the brewery began as an inside joke. One day Don and his wife met

their friend Rick Reinert at a bar. Rick arrived wearing Vikings-colored Zubaz pants – a nightmare in purple and gold, which Don immediately lambasted as too ugly to exist, let alone to be worn where people might see. “What?” Rick defended himself. “These are my fat pants!” Putting on one’s fat pants became synonymous with drinking beer from that day onward. “We set out to build a community,” said Elizabeth. “We’re all from Eden Prairie. My dad grew up here, I grew up here, and nearly all of the people we love are right here as well. It almost feels lazy to compare Fat Pants to Cheers, but everybody does know your name here, when you’re a regular, and we’re always glad when anyone comes. All we’re missing is Ted Danson behind the bar.” Today Fat Pants is able to turn out about 750 barrels of beer per year. That’s 186,000 pints, or 6.2 Milwaukee fraternity parties depending on your preferred volumetric unit. And all of that beer is exceptionally delicious. “Like the name of the brewery itself, most of our beers are named after our family’s inside jokes,” Elizabeth continued. “Our strong and citrusy Monkey Grinder Mosaic IPA goes back to when we used to mill all of our grains by hand. Rick would huddle over the bucket while my dad or I would pour the grain. One day my dad told Rick that he looked like an organ grinder monkey, and the name just kind of stuck. We’re all much nicer to Rick than I’m making us out to be, I promise. “Our Love You More chocolate cherry stout is named after my family’s standard response whenever anyone tells someone that they love them. It’s an appropriately sweet beer, not unlike Queen Anne Cordial Cherries, which we often pour over ice cream to serve as a dessert.

“Our family has always loved IPAs, which is why that style of beer has become our primary focus. My favorite beer is our Devotion, a Centennial IPA that we began fine-tuning early on during our garage days. Our Hunnay Bear brown ale is actually the final rendition of our first batch which we botched so badly. It’s named after my parents’ unique pronunciation of their favorite pet name for each other. “Fat Pants Brewing Co. is also an event center. We host regular karaoke nights, bingo games, dance classes, cooking classes, improv comedy shows and live music performances. Our space is also available for private events like birthday parties, weddings and corporate gatherings. We can accommodate approximately 130 guests, and naturally the beer element of the party is already taken care of when you join us.
“I feel like we’ve achieved our mission. What Rick, my father, my stepmom Linda and I have created here with the help of our staff and the Eden Prairie community feels like a dream come true. I joke that I have to pinch myself sometimes to remind myself that this is all real – or, better yet, I’ll have a glass of beer.” Fat Pants Brewing Co. is located at 8335 Crystal View Road in Eden Prairie, where they are open every day. They have a full kitchen and serve lunch and dinner, as well as happy hour Monday through Thursday. They even have a gift shop (but regrettably offer no hideous pants for sale). You may learn more about Eden Prairie’s family-owned microbrewery at fatpantsbrewing.com.

The Community Gathering Place ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER Eden Prairie’s Smith-Douglas-More House rose from the ground in 1877. In addition to accommodating Sheldon Smith and his kin, the fire-red Greek Revival served as a beacon of hospitality to train passengers traversing a frontier still brightened by gaslight. The house remains a beacon to this day. As Smith Coffee & Cafe, it offers a rare glimpse of authenticity during an era when corporations bolt impersonal franchises into the landscape with relentless abandon. “We have been in business at this location since 2006,” said Ann Schuster, who owns and operates Smith Coffee & Cafe alongside
her family. “I felt the Eden Prairie community needed a gathering space, as too many of my friends confessed to leaving town whenever they wanted to meet over a nice cup of coffee. None of us had experience managing a cafe, but I supposed if the coffee was good enough, people would come.” The Schusters’ coffee exceeds “good enough.” Their enormous roaster growls to life every morning to turn Ethiopian and Colombian beans to sublimity, and their signature 1877 Blend produces lattes and cappuccinos which invariably curl their drinkers’ toes. Take it from an inveterate caffeine hophead: Smith Coffee has got the goods. CONTINUED > MAY 2 0 2 2 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/E D E N P R A I R I E

“The rest of our menu matters just as much to us,” continued Ann. “We have always made everything from scratch as often as we can. We bake our muffins and cinnamon rolls fresh every morning, and we make all of our jam and syrups right here in our kitchen. Our guests love our sandwiches – especially our bacon avocado for breakfast, and our Smith turkey for lunch. I’m grateful that our town has embraced our pizzas as well, which we serve fresh from our oven every Wednesday evening.” Cinnamon rolls such as Smith Coffee’s demand adulation. They are fluffy hand-rolled manna, glacéed until they become the physical embodiment of perfection and best eaten just after the Schusters open their doors every morning. Cinnamon rolls aren’t the meaning of life, but they do punctuate it with exclamation marks. “It has been wonderful to work and serve people in this historic property, and we’re looking forward to reopening its patios for the spring,” said Ann. “We recently remodeled our dining room, but we haven’t sacrificed the traditional ambiance that has delighted so many people for well over a century. We’re lucky to have such a beautiful location, and are proud to continue the Smith-Douglas-More House’s legacy of hospitality.” Smith Coffee & Cafe is open daily 8am through 3pm, and on Wednesday for pizza from 5pm until 8pm. Stop by 8107 Eden Prairie Road for the authentic experience, or visit smith1877.com to learn more.

Jean Miller, Founder of Full Sail Solutions
Jean Miller grew tired of biting her tongue. An accountant by education, Jean had spent more than 20 years running her own boutique consulting firm. She advised her clients on all matters of finances, but did not consider it her business to point out other areas in which their companies were deficient. A perfectionist by self-admission, Jean found such abstention difficult. After taking a couple months off to hike the Camino de Santiago with her 75-year-old mother, she mulled over how she would like to go back and help all the workplaces she perceived to be hindered by failures to communicate, build teamwork, and foster an otherwise productive environment. Jean was also aware that companies must presently pay increasing attention to staff retention. The words “Great” and “Recession,” when placed together, are of special interest to a business analyst. After some meditation Jean put all consultation on hold, developed a fascinating tool to help companies become stronger, and founded Full Sail Solutions in Eden Prairie. “I began by isolating every facet of a company’s culture,” said Jean. “In time I narrowed the list down to what matters most within organizations based on my work with many businesses in many diverse industries: Structure, Environment, Leadership, Errors & Mistakes, Communication, Teamwork, Transparency, Opportunities, Risk vs. Reward and Systems. Just like that, SELECTTORS® was born. “Errors & Mistakes, for example, relates to how a business deals with employees when they make mistakes. Does the management show their staff how to avoid the same mistakes in the future? Or do they only reprimand them? Opportunities encompasses growth, recognition and connection – not just the potential for career advancement – and includes whether staff members receive recognition
for their accomplishments, and also whether they work alongside others whom they relate to. Systems, which is often overlooked, looks at the technology and equipment the staff uses as well as the flow of manual processes. In the simplest terms, do the current systems in place make their jobs easier or only more difficult? “A company’s team members are sensitive to each of the SELECTTORS, and can encounter more problems in their workplace when they report that any of them are deficient. That’s why I developed surveys around SELECTTORS – they provide a clear overview of exactly which areas a company’s culture is lacking in. “The SELECTTORS survey is short because it is designed to be taken multiple times a year, which enhances its value as a morale-boosting exercise. There’s a psychological phenomenon known as the Hawthorne effect. It describes the way people tend to work harder when they believe someone is paying attention to them, which explains why employees take greater pride in their roles when they know their management pays genuine attention to their opinions. “Our clients find the results they receive from their SELECTTORS surveys invaluable as they identify ways they can improve their companies. It helps them begin conversations with their team members which can lead to important breakthroughs. They get to say ‘We heard you, and we want to fix it.’ The survey also provides our signature Compass Heading™, which gives an accurate assessment of employees’ overall satisfaction with their workplace. “The simple act of showing that team members’ opinions matter is immensely beneficial, too. Our clients will take note of this, especially as increasing numbers of their employees complete their surveys every few months. Rising participation rates also reflect employees’ trust in the process, which grows once they’ve seen that their input really is anonymous. CONTINUED >

“Just as we continually strive to be the best versions of ourselves, Full Sail Solutions allows companies to be the best versions of themselves. That ultimately means better financial results!”
“Part of Full Sail Solutions’ value is that we are a third party vendor to our clients. People are understandably hesitant to give their honest opinions directly to their employers, and place more trust in an intermediary to keep their identities separate from their opinions. But the survey itself, which is more valid, comprehensive, and easy to administer than any other assessment of a company’s culture developed to date, is the greatest advantage that we offer. “Our process requires little consulting. We can help our client put together the presentation they will use to share survey results with their employees, if they would like that assistance, and also help them identify which of the SELECTTORS they should prioritize. And if our clients want additional help dissecting the results and making positive changes, we’ve partnered with some amazing change management professionals.

“In response to the current business climate, we’ve added an extension to the SELECTTORS survey. When so many managers are weighing the pros and cons of continuing to let their employees work from home, requesting that they return to the office, or embracing some hybrid of the two schedules, this survey gives them clear guidance on the best course of action. It’s additionally available as its own standalone product and it’s already proven helpful to managers who must make an unprecedented decision in the American workplace. It also serves as an excellent introduction to our services. “Just as we continually strive to be the best versions of ourselves, Full Sail Solutions allows companies to be the best versions of themselves. That ultimately means better financial results!” To learn more about Full Sail Solutions’ revolutionary product and how it enhances employee satisfaction and productivity, please visit FullSailSolutions.Net.

Women’s Guide to Financial Planning WITH HEATHER CROKE OF BOULAY FINANCIAL ADVISORS ARTICLE BY DAVID SCHELLER
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, half of women between the ages of 55 and 66 have no personal retirement savings. A recent survey conducted by Betterment revealed that two out of five women have not saved any money for an emergency. Women lag behind men in both of these crucial aspects of financial planning. The reasons for these disparities are manifold, but Heather Croke believes any woman can improve her situation simply by becoming more engaged in her personal finances. Heather is certainly qualified to say so as a wealth management partner with Boulay Financial Advisors, who since 1998 has provided families and individuals with a variety of financial services including tax preparation, investment, risk, debt and money management, and income tax, estate, retirement and education planning. “Any woman, regardless of her age, would do well to begin tracking her spending,” said Heather. “There are many apps available for this purpose, including Boulay’s own, but they will all give you a solid idea of where your money is going. Making just a few seemingly insignificant
changes will have a huge impact on your savings in the long term. “If you’re only just setting out on your financial journey, you must prioritize creating an emergency fund. I advise saving three to six months’ worth of your expenses. Otherwise you risk running up credit card balances, and such debt that carries a high interest rate can take even diligent individuals years to pay off. If your emergency fund is established, begin maximizing your contribution to your health savings account, as that money is set aside on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified medical expenses. And because a single injury can take such a huge toll on her finances, I encourage every woman to consider purchasing disability insurance and reviewing to see if life insurance is necessary. “Fund your own retirement account as well. If you can contribute to a traditional or Roth 401(k), invest at least enough to receive the company match. If you don’t have a 401(k), any contributions you make to an individual retirement account will ultimately serve you well. Few women realize how expensive potential future long-term care can be. If you spend any

amount of time researching it, you will become more compelled to begin saving for it. There is never an advantage to delaying such an important investment. “Women outlive men by five years on average. Many women aren’t aware of the ramifications of surviving their spouses, which often include receiving half as much in Social Security checks. Your tax status will also change, which is why it is crucial to prepare for potential widowhood by knowing every account and professional service your partner uses to manage your household finances – and securing your own access to them. “Every woman should have a will, advance healthcare directive, and an assigned power of attorney. Review these documents every couple of years and make certain all your beneficiaries on retirement accounts and life insurance policies stay apprised of any changes you make. “I say the same thing to every woman I work with Don’t hesitate to ask questions! It would be an understatement to say that financial planning is a dense subject, and too many women are afraid to explore it for fear of appearing misinformed or uneducated. By opening up and asking an expert everything they want to know about making their money work harder, any woman will invariably gain the knowledge she needs to proceed forward with confidence. “But even if they don’t partner with a financial planner, there are countless books, podcasts and articles available to a woman who wishes to take a more active role in her finances. I would recommend beginning with Boulay’s own website, which covers topics ranging from wealth and investment management to estate and trust planning.” Please visit boulaygroup.com to learn more, as well as to schedule an appointment with a financial planner in Eden Prairie.
