TRIA THE FUTURE OF KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Anytime a robot is mentioned, it’s common to think that a human is being replaced, but when it comes to robotic-assisted total knee replacement surgery, that is definitely not the case. The ROSA Knee System, currently offered to TRIA Orthopedics patients, is a tool that gives surgeons the ability to offer greater accuracy and precision. And like the traditional knee replacement procedure, it’s another great option for patients hoping to shed chronic knee pain and get back to a more active lifestyle. “Specializing in hip and knee replacement has let me devote my career to improving people’s lives,” said Dr. Christine Pui, an orthopedic surgeon at TRIA. “I welcome any technology which assists me on that mission – and from my hands-on experience, the ROSA appears to be exactly that when it comes to total knee replacements.” TRIA’s approach to orthopedic care is just as scientific as you might imagine, which is why their surgeons abstain from claiming that robotic-assisted knee surgery is revolutionary. It would be too much praise to lavish on a technology they have only just recently adopted. But caution does not curtail Dr. Pui’s optimism that the ROSA Knee System will soon become a popular option for patients. ROSA Knee combines multiple cameras with optimal lens tracking to follow the patient’s leg throughout surgery. If the

patient’s leg moves – however slightly – the system’s robotic arm adjusts so the procedure can remain as precise as possible. Robotic assistance adds heightened mathematical accuracy to knee replacement surgery. In addition to taking X-rays, orthopedic surgeons have always measured knee extension, flexion and balance before and after each procedure. With the ROSA, TRIA surgeons are now able to track those measurements during procedures as well. “That’s why the technology is especially promising for patients who have challenging needs, such as severe osteoarthritis or prior trauma or surgeries to their knees,” said Dr. Pui. “I was TRIA’s first patient to receive ROSA knee replacement surgery,” said Kathy Connelly. “I had developed rheumatoid arthritis to a point where I literally could not bend my knees. I had to keep my legs straight when I walked, and the pain was so intense that I had given up just about everything I once enjoyed doing. I couldn’t even get up from a chair while I was holding my six-month-old grandson.” Kathy had both of her knees replaced in 2022. Her left knee replacement was performed using the traditional surgery. The second surgery was done with assistance from the ROSA Knee System. “I had a shorter recovery period after my second surgery, and even months after both surgeries I notice significantly less

stiffness in my right knee,” Kathy said. “I appreciate that my left knee had been in worse condition, but I do believe the outcome from the robotic-assisted procedure is better all the same.” The best news is that Kathy is feeling improvement in both of her knees. “It’s like night and day,” said Kathy. “I’m back to volunteering at Lakeview Hospital. I’m gardening again. I can even chase after my grandson – not at a full sprint, but he knows grandma is always right behind him.” Dr. Pui doesn’t believe that robots will make human surgeons obsolete, but she is excited that the TRIA team is at the forefront of this technology. “I often speak to recent patients who are delighted to have resumed their normal lives, walking down the street without pain, getting up from chairs without assistance, or just playing with the dog. Brighter Days Family Grief Center HOPE BEGINS HERE

Brighter Days Family Grief Center is the only family grief center in Minnesota supporting grievers of all ages. The Eden Prairie non-profit provides free grief support programs to children, young adults and adults who are grieving the terminal diagnosis or death of a family member. Brighter Days uses a holistic model of care that focuses on the logistical, psychosocial and financial aspects of grief. Carolyn Kinzel, founder and president, started Brighter Days after many years of researching grief centers in other states. Her own life experiences, both personal and professional, inspired her to base the center’s mission on the entire grief experience rather than just the emotional component. “We assist with the oftentimes overwhelming logistics

surrounding loss,” said Carolyn. “We can help with Social Security, life insurance, closing accounts and probate questions. We additionally support people’s psychosocial needs by connecting them to others who have shared similar experiences. Just knowing that someone else understands what you’re going through can help with so many aspects of the grief process.” Brighter Days has served well over 6,000 people thanks to their strong partnerships with Minnesota hospitals, hospices and mental health organizations. Their signature program, Embrace-A-Family, is a community-based fund that has gifted more than $50,000 in financial assistance to grieving individuals. Sometimes groceries or gift cards for gas and meals can mean everything to someone

who is overwhelmed by the unexpected financial burdens a death can bring. “Brighter Days is a family grief center because we believe every family member needs and deserves support that feels comfortable for them,” said Carolyn. “Each person’s relationship with their loved one was different, and each person’s grief is unique, so it’s important to offer different types of support. Grief counseling, support groups, wellness workshops, retreats and camps are among the many kinds to choose from.” Brighter Days acquired Youth Grief Services from M Health Fairview in 2020. The renowned program includes Camp Erin, a weekend getaway where kids just get to be kids alongside peers who have experienced similar losses. “They learn how to balance joy

and sorrow; that there’s neither shame in laughing nor crying after losing a loved one,” said Carolyn. “When we witness the transformation that happens as they realize they’re no longer alone, it’s incredibly fulfilling. These kids receive the support and acceptance they need to keep pressing forward. More than anything else, they gain hope, and that is the beauty in our mission.” With the overwhelming number of calls the center receives each month, they intend to expand by building a 15,000-square-foot Grief and Wellness Center in the Twin Cities. “We have some of the best care centers in the world for causes that are near and dear to so many of us,” said Carolyn. “Minneapolis Heart Institute, Hazelden, Mayo Clinic and Masonic Cancer Center to

name a few. All of these centers are state-of-the-art spaces for people to receive care. How are we missing the one space for people who lose someone to one of these causes? Until we opened our doors in 2017, it simply didn’t exist, but we have outgrown our space twice already. It is essential for us to build a large enough space where grievers from all over the state can come to connect with others, gain support and education, and ultimately heal.”

Carl Immediatio awoke in a cold sweat one autumn night in 1993. A nightmare had just finished tormenting him with a stark reality: he had been blessed with good children, a good wife, good job, and good home – but he was not doing good. Carl realized he wasn’t giving enough back. The seed of doubt may have been planted a few months earlier, when Carl was chosen to play Santa Claus at his company Christmas party. (To receive such a nomination is a tremendous compliment to a man’s character and good looks.) Carl opted in favor of growing a real beard over donning a fake, scratchy one. As Carl increasingly resembled Santa, did he feel he was falling short of the saint’s example? It is possible. The morning following his revelation Carl called the Salvation Army. He asked to volunteer as a bell ringer, but only if he could do so as Santa Claus. Santa Carlucci thus came to be on Black Friday. “My wife whipped me up a simple costume,” said Santa Carlucci. “She affixed some fur to a red pullover, which along with a pair of boots and a hat from Walgreens made me look the part well enough. I put cheap, foamy whitening in my beard and too much blush on my cheeks. I looked like a clown, but I was determined. “I rang a bell outside a store for ten hours that day. I returned to ring it every Friday and Saturday for the rest of the holiday season. I froze solid, but I didn’t care. I got a lot of ‘sympathetic’ donations and I was brightening the day for a lot of people.” Santa Carlucci endured the bitter weather and incessant tintinnabulation for several years, grateful that his boss Herb Rorke gave him free leave for charity work. In this fashion, he cold forged his Santa persona. He amassed a better wardrobe as well.

In his eighth year volunteering Santa Carlucci received a formative compliment. “One day a lady in an elegant dress came out of the store,” said Santa Carlucci. “She turned to me and said ‘Oh my gosh, you’re wonderful! You’re better looking than the Santas at the mall! Who handles you?’ It turned out she was a modeling agent. That was the signal I needed to switch gears and begin entertaining in a home environment.” Any Santa will confess to feeling overwhelmed during his first home visits, but Santa Carlucci’s determination bore him through the unbridled energy of children going bananas over him. He soon found his greatest strengths as an entertainer: storytelling and props. His props in particular are enough to put even the most incredulous sprout’s doubts to rest. Santa Carlucci will arrive with real pieces of antlers and the North Pole itself, a bell which can summon baby reindeer, and a most compelling box of special fairy dust. The dust, he will explain to a child with eyes wide as pie plates, is why reindeer can fly and how he can carry so many tons of gifts. A tiny electric light hidden within Santa Carlucci’s glove makes the dust sparkle as he details its magic. During his decades wearing the red suit, Santa Carlucci has developed a special devotion to children challenged by disabilities and illnesses. He spends roughly one-third of his time as Santa volunteering at places such as Children’s Minnesota Hospital, Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare, and University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amount up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
