store in Eden Prairie where you can get a local, naturally raised turkey. And if your family prefers roast beef, they will love our exclusive Akaushi beef, a premium brand of Kobe-style beef typically only available at high-end steakhouses. “But no food is so crucial to family get-togethers as dessert. I laugh when I tell people how much time we spend just fine-tuning our pumpkin pie crust. Each and every cookie, from spritz to chocolate chip, is made from scratch in our bakery. Our baked goods haven’t got quite the same shelf life as other retailers’, but we don’t use preservatives at home, so we don’t use them at Kowalski’s either. “We’re happy to admit when another local vendor is able to make something even more exceptional than we can. It’s also exciting to partner with nearby small businesses like Salsa Lisa, Velvet Bees Honey Butter, Bistro Meringues, and Patti’s Roasted Nuts to help them grow. It wasn’t very long ago that Mary Anne and Kris were first starting out, and they’re eager to give the same kind of community support that they owe their success to.”

Kowalski’s is open 6am to 10pm everyday at 16500 West 78th Street in Eden Prairie. You may also order home delivery or curbside pickup online at kowalskis.com.

THE HOME OF HOLIDAY SPIRIT

CHANHA S SEN DINNER THE ATRE S ARTICLE DAVID SCHELLER

HERB AND CAROL BLOOMBERG FOUNDED CHANHASSEN DINNER THEATRES (OR THE CHAN, AS IT’S KNOWN TO PERFORMERS) WITH A HUMBLE VISION: “TO BRING A LITTLE BIT OF BROADWAY TO THE MIDWEST.” The farm town of Chanhassen was hardly Manhattan back in 1968, but it gained one of the best aspects of the borough with the grand opening of a 90,000 square foot dinner theatre. The Bloombergs had a good idea. Today the Chan is the largest theater of its kind in the country, not to mention Minnesota’s largest privately-owned restaurant. They have served nearly 13 million guests since Herb and Carol cut the ribbon. The Chan attracts some fairly major talent from across the world, but Minnesota City, Minnesota would birth one of their greatest singers. Pamela Helmer McNeill, who has toured with Rick Astley, collaborated with Yanni, opened for Etta James, and performed for the Queen of England herself calls the Chan her home theatre. And she gets a little sentimental during Christmastime, because it is when she first decided to become a songstress. “I was only three years old, dressed up as an angel and singing on stage at my family’s church on Christmas Eve,” reminisced Pamela. “When the performance was over I looked across the audience and saw all those faces beaming with happiness. I knew right then what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I spent the next years learning how to sing, and began practicing on my grandmother’s old Hammond organ before my feet could reach the pedals.

BACK STAGE (CONTINUED)

“Christmas is still especially important to me. It’s such a heartwarming time that I have to resist the urge to start putting up my tree in September. That’s why I’m so proud to be a part of the Rock & Roll Xmas Spectacular. The other seven performers and I are like a little band of misfits, taking classic rock songs and putting Christmas lyrics to them – or vice versa. You’d be surprised how well “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” blends with Peter Frampton’s “Show Me the Way,” and only we could fuse AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth.” It’s not your grandma’s Christmas show! “This will be our 17th year performing the Rock & Roll Xmas Spectacular. We’re kicking it off December 1st through the 5th, taking a little break to do some Christmas shopping, and then coming back for an encore December 8th through 12th. “My group is only a small part of the Chan’s Christmas spirit. This December we’re also presenting The Music Man, A Kat Perkins Christmas, Celtic Holiday Hooley, Stevie Ray’s Comedy Cabaret, An Andy & Bing Christmas (which is very much your grandma’s Christmas show), and many others. I meet so many guests who tell me they just hadn’t gotten into the Christmas spirit until they came to the Chan. It means so much to me, to be able to do that. “How lucky are we, to have the biggest dinner theatre in America in our backyard? Not only can people come to see a Broadway quality show, but also support so many musicians, actors, and comedians living right here in our community. But I’d feel terrible if I left out the kitchen and waitstaff. Their ability to plate and serve hundreds of gourmet dinners all at once really puts the kind of orchestration I do to shame. Thanks to them we’re able to create the perfect evening of entertainment for everyone – families with little kids and great-grandparents, company gatherings, and couples on dates. The Chan can be very romantic, and I should know. I met my husband here!” Please visit chanhassendt.com to learn more about the Chan’s upcoming shows, including Rumours & Dreams – The Music of Fleetwood Mac which will return this January as part of the CDT Concert Series. Pamela’s mastery of the Nicks tremolo is truly remarkable. You may also visit pamelamcneill.com to discover more about Pamela. Be on the lookout for her seventh studio album, which drops next year!

GIVING BACK

Gratefully

ARTICLE ALLISON GIBESON PHOTOGRAPHY JANIE JONES

GIVING AWAY AFTER A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN LAST YEAR, LIFESTYLE PUBLICATIONS IS GIVING $300,000 TO RECIPIENTS IN NEED THIS CHRISTMAS SEASON AND BEYOND... AND WE NEED YOUR HELP!

ABOUT SIX YEARS AGO ANNA SAROL, THE DAUGHTER OF A SINGLE MOTHER, WAS PARALYZED IN A GYMNASTICS ACCIDENT WHEN SHE WAS A FRESHMAN IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT UNTIL LAST YEAR SHE DID NOT HAVE A STAIRLIFT IN HER HOME. The stairlift was made possible when Lifestyle Publications gave her family $10,000. Anna Sarol

“I watched my community come together to help me get this equipment to my house, and words can’t explain how appreciative my family and I are,” Anna says. The money for Anna’s stairlift was part of a giveaway campaign from the company during the 2020 Christmas season that benefited more than 80 recipients across the country with a final distribution of $250,000 throughout the year. When the company opened nominations, they were flooded with submissions. Community leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you nominated people that were in need of assistance. As the eyes and ears of the community, these readers were able to help identify people who might have otherwise gone unnoticed or unrecognized. One such nominee was Kathy*, an aunt who is raising her three young relatives. The children came from an abusive situation, and Kathy, a single guardian, works tirelessly to provide for them. Nevertheless, the family was already living in poverty despite her working seven days a week when Kathy lost her job during the pandemic. She resorted to selling tamales to help pay the rent.

When a case manager with a Big Brothers Big Sisters foster youth mentoring program heard about Lifestyle’s campaign and call for nominations, she quickly thought of Kathy. “When I shared the news that Kathy was selected and would be receiving $3,000, she cried, screamed, and was in disbelief,” the case manager said. “She immediately wanted to give back to me and the donor by providing endless tamales. This funding allowed the children to have a small Christmas tree for the first time ever. Kathy was able to pay her rent and utilities for three months, and the children were able to experience a holiday season in peace without financial stressors.”

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO GIVE AWAY $3OO,OOO This year the company will have nominations for the giveaway open from December 1-15, 2021. To submit a nomination, follow @CityLifestyle on Instagram and fill out the form found in the bio link. The amount given to each recipient will be based on need. The leaders of Lifestyle Publications believe God has blessed them with their company’s continued success, so they in turn wish to be a blessing and encouragement to others as they increase the amount of this year’s giveaway to those in need to $300,000 for the year.

In yet another case, Emily* who worked as a janitor at a school, was a recipient and was struggling to afford simply buying groceries for her children. Before the ongoing difficulties of the pandemic even started, a tornado destroyed the school she worked at just a couple weeks before the initial shutdown in March 2020 which resulted in a loss of income for her. Emily was incredibly surprised and grateful to receive assistance from the giveaway. *Names changed for privacy 30
