I know you love Eden Prairie just as much as I do. That’s why you shouldn’t feel one iota of guilt for wanting to leave our fair city every now and then. Perhaps you want to play golf in Scotland – the birthplace of “a good walk spoiled” – or take a cruise down the Mississippi. Maybe you’d just like to bask in the Caribbean sun for a week. These are all perfectly reasonable impulses for anyone who lives this close to the Arctic Circle during late autumn, which is why we’re proud to feature Mark and Helen Rigby, Cruise Planners in this issue. They’ll tend to all your upcoming travel arrangements for you, wherever you’d like to go! In this issue we also feature Tavern 4&5, which is without question one of Eden Prairie’s most popular neighborhood hangouts. It turns out there’s no secret to the restaurant’s success: great food, great service, and a drink list that’ll chase away the winter doldrums nearly as effectively as a week-long stretch in the Bahamas could have.

“WE DON’T JUST DO CRUISES, BUT WE DO ... DO CRUISES!”

MARK RIGBY’S BRITISH ACCENT MUST CERTAINLY CONTRIBUTE TO HIS SUCCESS AS A TRAVEL ADVISOR. If anything were to go amiss while you’re thousands of miles from home, his Mancunian lilt would put you right at ease. Conversely, whomever Mark requests a solution from must feel compelled to provide one at once. There is authority in the British accent. This is only to be expected from a country that has ruled one quarter of the world. “My family and I originate from Manchester,” said Mark, who cofounded the Eden Prairie branch of Cruise Planners alongside his wife Helen. “It’s one of the more wettish cities in the United Kingdom, which itself is a very rainy country. Naturally, from an early age we’ve always wanted to go to sunny places – Spain, Italy, Portugal, and, if we felt like making the trip, Florida. Travel is in our DNA.

TRAVEL DESTINATION (CONTINUED)

“I’ve traveled the world both for business and for pleasure – more than 40 countries so far, including West Germany where I served in the British Army. Traveling that much really gives you a different perspective on the world, and more experiences than you ever could have enjoyed if you just stayed at home. “After moving to the States I worked at a company in Bloomington for several years, but I always wanted to start my own. When I learned about Cruise Planners, which is one of the largest travel advisor franchises in North America, I decided to start helping other people explore the world for a living. “Wherever you want to travel, my wife Helen and I will take care of all your arrangements. If you would like to see a Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monte Carlo, or go on safari in South Africa, or take a cruise through the fjords of Alaska, we will make certain everything about your vacation comes together seamlessly. With that said, we have four specialties: river cruises, tours of Britain and Ireland, all-inclusive luxury resorts, and golf vacations. “Personally, I much prefer river cruises over the massive ocean liners. The more intimate ships let you get out and explore a country’s towns and villages instead of just its biggest cities, which is the only real way to meet new people and absorb their culture. You can go on river cruises all over the world as well. Europe is very popular for the Rhine and the Danube, but I would say the Mississippi is on par with either – and conveniently right in our backyard. “I don’t think I have to spend too much time explaining why we’re your best travel advisors for tours of Britain and Ireland. That’s our home turf, and we can pair you with a local tour director who

T r avel R ecom mend at ion s for Food ies “Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia, which is to say there are a lot of shared values in and around food; they have really great cheese, dairy, beef, pasta, but very few tourists, hardly any. So if you love Italy, that kind of specific travel and food experience, particularly Northern Italy, because you can see the Alps from where they are. It’s picture perfect, a beautiful place, and also where orange wine is from.” Dennis also highly recommends Costa Rica, Hawaii and Finland. “Most people love the idea of travel, but we tend to pick the same places when we travel, and there is nothing wrong with that, they are amazing for a reason, but when you get off the beaten path a little bit, you learn the difference between vacation and travel.” In addition to travels, Dennis is a huge advocate for supporting local businesses and the connection grilling in your own backyard can make. “Grilling is inherently communal. You talk to your neighbors, they smell it, they ask you what you’re cooking; the whole act of it is a community. One of the most common fears Dennis hears from people cooking and/or grilling at home is, ‘where do I start?’ Dennis recommends cooking the things that bring you joy — things that are on a restaurant menu you can’t NOT order because you’re so pumped that those dishes are on there. “Find the things that you love. Take the stress out of food. Feed people because all they really care about is spending time with you. Bring joy back into the kitchen.” CityLifestyle.com/EdenPrairie
