There is a third area of wellness that is perhaps most important of all, and often the most neglected. What are you doing to improve your emotional and mental wellbeing? Mental wellbeing refers to your cognitive processes: what you are thinking, behaviors and habits. Emotional wellbeing refers to what you are feeling and how you express those feelings. Thinking and feeling are sometimes impossible to separate, and sometimes in direct opposition to each other (and this is what causes problems). What you think reflects your beliefs about yourself and the world around you. And as emotion drives all behavior, you can see how it can heavily impact your financial and physical wellbeing. Science has shown that continual negative thoughts and emotions affect our molecular structure to the point where we become ‘addicted’ to those thoughts and emotions. If you need help with your mental and emotional wellbeing, give us a call today.

OUR TOWN

Back to School

ARTICLE ANDREW STAVAST

IT’S BEEN SUCH A WONDERFUL SUMMER, BUT IT’S TIME TO PREPARE FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR. As a child’s summer vacation transitions into the start of school, there are a variety of thoughts, feelings and emotions that both a parent and a child can experience. For some students, there can be a feeling of sadness about having to get back into the routine of the school day and a feeling of loss for their less structured summer schedule. For others, starting the school year is seen as quite positive. For these students, there are joyful feelings about seeing friends in familiar surroundings and the predictability of their teachers and school day. The educational experience is heightened when viewed as a partnership among the educators, the students and the families. It is imperative for teachers to know students’ families, cultures, interests, activities and what fuels the student as a learner. So, let’s discuss some basic best practices to use as you and your family prepare for the start of a new school year. These areas can be helpful for the parent and child to kick-start the new school year in the most positive fashion.

BEST PRACTICES FOR PREPARING FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR 12

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | August 2019

TIP 1 Get back into your sleep routine. Perhaps begin the school sleep routine two weeks prior to starting the school year. TIP 2 Shop for school supplies together. This is a great time for parents to get their child excited about new friends, a new grade and all the new school year can bring. TIP 3 Reestablish school routines. Have the child begin the schoolday routine by getting up at the same time each day and eating around the same time they would at school. TIP 4 Limit the use of TV and video games. It can come as a shock for many students when they realize that six hours of their day is going to be spent learning and not playing games and watching TV. TIP 5 Make an after-school game plan. This means you should craft a predictable plan for where your child will go after school; this could be a neighbor’s house, sitter or an after-school program. A good afterschool program will provide a student with predictability, comfort and a lack of confusion during the first few weeks of school. TIP 6 Be ready for the unexpected. Working parents often find it difficult to find a sitter when their child is sick. It’s a good idea to have a sitter lined up well in advance. TIP 7 Get organized. Review all school material, read all information carefully and mark down all important dates on your calendar. Designate a spot in the home for homework, permission slips and other school-related papers. Being organized in this manner will make things less stressful.

Our children are our most precious assets. Know that our educators feel the same way about them. Forming a team among the student, the teacher and the family can bring wonderful, productive growth in our students and foster a love of learning, positive social interaction and positive future development. We would like to thank Connie Hytjan, principal at Forest Hills Elementary school, for collaborating with us on this article. Here’s to the new school year. Let’s make it the best one yet!

LEGAL COMPASS

It’s Going to Be All Right Part One of a Three-Part Series on Collaborative Divorce

WE RECENTLY SAT DOWN WITH LOCAL ATTORNEY STEVAN YASGUR TO DISCUSS THE DEFINITION AND PROCESS OF COLLABORATIVE DIVORCE. As we researched this term, we found there are multiple benefits to the process. Collaborative divorce offers the parties involved enhanced control over the process and leads to less stress, anxiety and frustration for the couple and their children than the traditional process. Collaborative divorce allows a couple to resolve their divorce privately in a discreet manner. Many people find they develop useable insight into themselves and their relationships, which can support them as they rebuild their futures. Divorce is not a pleasant subject in anyone’s life, but the collaborative process can be a much better way to deal with the end of a marriage and to start a new future.

14

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | August 2019

Here is what Stevan had to say about collaborative divorce. “A close friend of mine who knows about my law practice once asked me, ‘What is the most important thing you can tell someone who comes in to see you about a divorce?’ Well, it depends, but I would want them to know it’s going to be alright. As the discussion moves forward, I would most probably find that they are living in an unbearable situation. Their situation is bad enough that they are talking to me about an unknown—the divorce—that they would rather not deal with. I counsel them with the fact that the divorce will end someday, and probably soon, and when it is over, they will go on with their life. “The people who come to me know that I do mostly collaborative cases, where the couple must agree on what happens before anything can happen. They know that each party must give their spouse a reason to agree with them. More importantly, over the course of the case, they have many opportunities to refine that conversation, discover what is at the heart of their goals and explore different ways to satisfy their spouse’s interests. By the time they reach all their agreements, they have talked everything through—multiple times—and they have a plan they can live with. All discussions were based on their actual situation, not some hypothetical. They have spoken with their lawyer; they understand what the courts can and cannot do. “If I am talking to someone who just wants revenge on their spouse, I know that person will never succeed, whether it’s in a collaborative case or in court. I tell them that courts are not in the revenge business. Someone who is hurting that badly almost certainly will get more help from a therapist than a lawyer. A client who is most interested in life after divorce, history shows, time and again, that it really will be alright.” If Stevan’s last name sounds familiar, you might know of a music festival on an upstate farm that took place in 1969. Stevan is the nephew of Max Yasgur, owner of the farm that hosted the historic Woodstock Festival.

Expecting a new puppy or kitten in the household? Here are the essentials Your new kitten or puppy is about to enter a completely new situation. The comfort of their mother and siblings will be replaced with unfamiliar sights and sounds, and their breeder or carer has been suddenly replaced by someone new. For these reasons you need to ensure you make the transition as stress free as possible by stocking up on necessary provisions. Your shopping list should include: • Water and food bowls • Grooming equipment (especially if you have a breed that requires regular upkeep) • Bedding • A suitable crate or carrier to bring them home (some people also use a cardboard box which can be just as effective) • Toys (suitable for puppies or kittens) • Collar and leash • ID tag • Treats • A baby gate or pen (an essential for puppies) • A litter tray and scratching post for kittens

The Montessori Method

22

Eden Prairie Lifestyle | August 2019

ARTICLE EMILY SHEA

EDEN PRAIRIE MONTESSORI SCHOOL HAS BEEN GUIDING AND CULTIVATING CHILDREN THROUGH THE MONTESSORI METHOD FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. But what exactly is the Montessori method? Recently, we were able to sit down with Eden Prairie Montessori School’s director, Shonali Harrison, to learn more about the hands-on education that seeks to prepare children for the future while boosting their creativity and cultivating a love for learning. WHAT IS THE MONTESSORI METHOD? Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator best known for the philosophy of education that bears her name and her writing on scientific pedagogy. The Montessori method of education was introduced to the United States in 1911. This method of education values the development of the whole child, which is the physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. WHAT MAKES THIS METHOD DIFFERENT FROM OTHER TEACHING METHODS? Montessori is a method of education that is based on self-directed activity and hands-on learning. In Montessori classrooms, children make creative choices in their learning, while the classroom and the highly trained teachers offer age-appropriate activities to guide the process. Children work individually and in groups to discover and explore knowledge of the world and develop self-help skills. WHAT AGES OF CHILDREN CAN ATTEND EDEN PRAIRIE MONTESSORI? Our Montessori program serves children from 6 weeks old to 6 years old: infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten.

The preschool classroom is known as “Casa,” which means “house” (of children). Children from 3-6 years old are in the Casa. This mixed-age environment helps children learn and demonstrate

THE MONTESSORI METHOD

(CON TI N U ED)

We offer a kindergarten program for children who are eligible to enroll. The requirements include that they must have received at least a year of Montessori education and that they turn 5 years old before Sept. 1. The kindergarten students learn advanced academic skills. They also have the opportunity to handle responsibilities and to exercise leadership skills, preparing them for first grade. DO YOU OFFER A SUMMER PROGRAM? We have an exciting and fun-filled summer program. Each year, we have lots of creative experiences and classroom activities for academic development. We also offer outdoor activities that include water play, gardening, outdoor classroom time, painting and artwork. Field trips to a llama farm, Children’s Museum, Richardson Nature Center, Como Park Zoo and the Old Log Theater are some of the favorite places our children and staff love to visit during the summer. Our annual cultural week is also held within our summer program. It provides the children with a week of fun and learning about different cultures, traditions and tasting foods. HOW DO YOU IMPLEMENT DIFFERENT LEARNING MATERIALS TO FACILITATE LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT? The Montessori materials are specially designed and presented to the child by a Montessori-trained teacher. Dr. Montessori’s belief that the child is capable of discovering concepts by thinking for himself is apparent when a presentation is given by the Montessori adult. The classroom consists of math, language, sensorial, cultural, geography, science and exercises of practical life areas. Each area has a set of materials beautifully arranged to help the child choose what they can work with depending on what they have been presented with. The Montessori materials aid in learning different concepts through both concrete and abstract forms. Music, art and Spanish are also classes that are included in our program for all age groups. SO I’VE HEARD YOU HAVE A WIDE RANGE OF CLASS PETS AT YOUR BOTH YOUR NORTH AND SOUTH LOCATIONS. TELL ME MORE ABOUT HOW CLASS PETS ARE CHOSEN AND HOW THEY ARE INTRODUCED INTO THE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT. Children not only learn about animals when we have pets in the environment but also understand responsibilities for their care. This fosters love and compassion for all living things. They love to take turns cleaning the cages, feeding duties and even take turns caring for them over the weekends with the help of their parents. We have several different kinds of pets between the North and South locations: a pair of finches, fish, an iguana, guinea pigs and hermit crabs. Having pets in the environment has a calming effect on the children if they need to have some time for themselves. Children can watch and observe the animals and learn their behaviors.

they keep urgent slots open in our schedule, provide pet transport to the clinic and encourage drop-offs so they have an entire day to work up and treat sick animals. The clinic provides same-day ultrasound, digital radiography and bloodwork that can be interpreted by boarded specialists if requested. When it comes to providing reputable service, the most important component of Prairie Village’s success is their loyal, friendly and seasoned staff. Mary, their head receptionist, has been with Prairie Village for more than 25 years. Three of their veterinary nurses—Jamila, Kelley and Molly—have been on board for 14 years, while two others—Alyssa and Beth—have been a part of Prairie Village for five years. Lindsay, a veterinary assistant in training, is the new face at the clinic. “My colleague, Dr. Patia Hargreaves, came to Prairie Village in 2015,” Dr. Nelson says. “She is an outstanding surgeon and diagnostician. She is also comfortable with emergency medicine and is developing a niche in surgery, dentistry and dermatology. When I do take a vacation, I can always count on Dr. Hargreaves to hold down the fort!” The human-animal bond has grown by leaps and bounds in the new millennium. No one can argue against the fact that pets are true family members, and Prairie Village Pet Hospital acknowledges that by providing white-glove care for your beloved pet. “It’s been an honor to practice in this community and to get to know generations of families and their pets,” Dr. Nelson says. “We hope to recognize you all in the fall, as we celebrate 35 unbelievable years in Eden Prairie. Look for open-house festivities in the future.”

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I’m from Asheville, North Carolina, and I graduated

+ LIFELONG LEARNER

TO BE A MAGAZINE EDITOR? time. My dad is a doctor, and I spent a lot of time playing around with gauze and sutures when I was a kid. It wasn’t until my second year of college that I realized I had a true passion for writing and that I was actually pretty good at it. My adviser convinced me to switch majors, and I never looked back. Even when I was about to graduate, I didn’t think I’d become an editor right out of the gate. I figured I’d have to work as a local newspaper reporter for a while, but I worked really hard, and here I am. WHAT’S THE HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Finding a balance. This isn’t a 9-to-5 job; it’s an around-the-clock,

answer-the-phone-if-someone-

calls job. It’s hard to set firm boundaries. At first, I was nervous about saying no to something or disappointing someone. But then I remembered how hard I worked for this position and how much I deserve to stand my ground and create some space for a little rest and relaxation every once and awhile. Being a young professional, I want to form a good reputation for myself, but I also don’t want to get stepped all over. Like I said, finding a balance is key. ADVICE FOR OTHER YOUNG PROFESSIONALS? + Practice gratitude every day. + Speak your dreams into existence, no matter how big or scary they are. + Embrace a growth mindset. + Be humble. 34
