Mom also had a green thumb. Every corner of our yard had something growing. Lily-ofthe-valley and bleeding hearts in the shady corners; cosmos and snapdragons in the sun. Mom divided her bulbs and succulents; she pampered her rose bushes; she groomed her lilac hedges. We had philodendrons and sansevieria scattered about inside the house and she talked to her African violets in the big picture window because they were “sensitive.” I have a shoebox full of heirloom seeds my mom saved for me from our yard. They’re carefully labeled in her handwriting, and they represent my memories of her perfectly. She taught me to identify trees and birds and seashells. She loved the mountains and the oceans. Mom never had a bad day on the golf course because she was just happy to be outside. When she was 95, we’d drive through the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s three-mile loop and she’d happily read the signs and talk about the trees. I can picture my mom pulling grass along the edge of our back porch and coming up

JAGUAR ELEVATES THE ELECTRIC DRIVE
High Road GOING GREEN USED TO MEAN SACRIFICES. Whether it was giving up luxury, space, acceleration, or an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option, there was usually a compromise involved when driving an eco-friendly vehicle. These sacrifices have started to diminish over the years with more affordable and practical Electric Vehicles (EVs) coming to market. The Tesla Model 3, for example, has a lower base price than most EVs and an AWD option, making it practical for everyone from commuters to winter warriors. The Model 3 also happens to have outsold every other luxury vehicle in the country in 2018, indicating a desire to go green and setting the stage for an onslaught of newer, more practical EVs. Being a nation of SUV drivers, it’s no surprise that automakers are pushing to get their larger EVs to market. One of the most notable newcomers is the allnew Jaguar I-Pace. As a fully electric vehicle from an established automaker, the I-Pace is one of the first EVs to provide real competition for the Tesla Model X as a long range, AWD, fully electric, luxury SUV. The AWD I-Pace lives up to the Jaguar nameplate. It's not only stylish, it's fun and practical. Sticking with the sleek and rounded lines of today’s Jaguars, the I-Pace fits seamlessly within the lineup. Jaguar Land Rover loyalists will feel at home with familiar controls, capabilities, and plush surfaces throughout the cabin. The I-Pace provides interior hauling space to match that of the larger Porsche Cayenne, despite smaller dimensions due to extra space in the front trunk - "frunk" - sitting where a traditional combustion engine would be. Combine this space with the large trunk and hatchback styling and the I-Pace is sure to haul plenty of gear from everyday shopping to weekend travel. The I-Pace makes an impressive entrance with a 243-mile range, outpacing many of the more affordable options, while still beating them at the charger. Bringing the 90kWh battery from 0% to 85% charge in just 85 minutes keeps this EV on the road with minimal sacrifice to time. The impressive statistics do not stop there, as the I-Pace lurches from 0-60 in just 4.5 seconds with 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque, rivaling many sports cars while remaining true to its heritage as a Jaguar. Breaking into the EV market place is no easy feat for any automaker. All in all, Jaguar has created a well-rounded entry that won’t cost six figures and is sure to be the first of many EVs to come from Europe.

The author’s previous book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder, brought attention to the idea that our society’s shift to spending less time outdoors has resulted in a wide range of behavioral problems in children. Louv encourages everyone to get back outside. He stresses the importance and benefits of having a strong nature connection along with the numerous learning and healing benefits getting outdoors provides. The book is filled with outside ideas and activities for all ages. This is one guidebook everyone in the family can read, use and enjoy.
THE DEATH AND LIFE OF THE G R E A T L A K E S , DAN EGAN When one reviewer described this book as an “ecological page-turner,” I was hooked. Egan, a reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, combines history, trivia, and science for a fascinating – and sobering – look at the Great Lakes. He gives an interesting, detailed and easy-to-understand explanation of the complex natural system of the Great Lakes, damaging effects of society’s actions over time and the impact of invasive species. Once again, my fellow Minnesotans, we have paid our dues. The driveway has been shoveled and salted many times over. Our quadriceps are strong from high-stepping through snow. Your garden missed you. Does anyone love spring as much as a Minnesotan with a good antihistamine? In the Bosnian town of Zenica, they celebrate spring’s arrival with Cimburijada, “The Festival of Scrambled Eggs.” In the Minnesotan town of Eden Prairie, we celebrate many things, but especially spring, with brunch. The best way to host this season’s brunches in an even more celebratory way is simple: keep it spring “green.” Let’s talk about three ways to spread your eco-friendly love during the best meal of the day. SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES The happiest meals are low-waste. While a host’s temptation to bring out disposable cutlery is understandable, stay strong for Mother Earth. Do you have that friend who is always insistent on staying late to help clean up? Take them up on their offer (and keep them close). Use your grandma's teacups, risk your stemware. Cloth napkins are easier on the environment and add a touch of elegance. It's fun to feel fancy and your guests will feel special - a worthwhile investment of your time and trouble. Buying local produce - more on that in a moment - often means your food won’t come wrapped in excessive plastic. When shopping for your menu ingredients, consider bringing reusable bags. We always hear about their eco-friendliness, but never about how they’re so much sturdier. Let’s have a moment of silence for all of the eggs lost in the Lunds & Byerlys parking lot. EATING IN SEASON Not only does eating local and in-season produce support our local farmers, it does right by the environment, too. The more local your produce, the fewer miles it travels, saving fossil fuel. The more recently harvested your food, the more nutrient-dense it will be. April’s garden hero in Minnesota is mint. As an omelet accent or a tea latte star, mint is a crowd-pleaser. Come May, your garden’s strawberries will begin to arrive. From pancake toppers to a standalone side, you know what to do with these. But if this is a big kid brunch: strawberry mimosas. This is the season that keeps on giving. In May and June, we’ll see local peas, asparagus, parsnips, spinach, radishes, and rhubarb. CONTINUED >

Rabbit-free Easter decorations become springtime accents when arranged in the dining room. For your existing potted plants, your table runner is where they meet for their call to arms. If you have a suitable deck, patio, or friendly neighbor with either one on your invitation list, check the weather forecast. A partly cloudy, mid-60-degree springtime day in Minnesota is more beautiful than any dining room in the world.
strawberry mimosas INGREDIENTS + 7 cups sliced fresh strawberries (about 2 quarts) + 3 cups orange juice +Two bottles of chilled champagne + Fresh strawberries for garnish DIRECTIONS Place half of the strawberries and orange juice in a blender; cover and process until smooth. Transfer to a pitcher. Repeat with remaining strawberries and orange juice. Pour 1/4 cup strawberry mixture into each champagne flute. Top with champagne. Stir. Garnish with a strawberry slice. (Makes about 12 mimosas.)

Hypnosis is a heightened state of awareness and focus where one is open to suggestion. And this is where the confusion begins! People equate suggestibility with gullibility, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. If I were to suggest to a client that they should rob a bank and bring me the money, they would not be open to that suggestion. In fact, it’s not my job to give clients suggestions that I think would benefit them. I provide new thoughts and ideas that they are asking for that will help them achieve their goals. You are open to suggestions all the time, whether in the hypnotic state or not. When you watch television adver tisements, they are making suggestions to you. Let’s say you are female, and the bathtub commercial comes on (Cialis). As this is a product you wouldn’t use, you would ignore the suggestion to buy it. However, if you were looking for a new car and Matthew McConaughey was in that Lincoln Navigator, you may find yourself stopping by a Lincoln dealership. (Sorry ladies, I doubt he’ll be there!) Researchers say that some people are more open to suggestion to others, and while I agree with that in principle, the greatest factor in one’s suggestibility is the strength of desire for change. While I wish I had that hypo-wand that would magically enable you to reach your goals, I don’t have that control. However, I can teach you how to work through your issues and provide techniques to empower you for the future.

One of the home's lucky owners captures the views with her artist’s eye and her camera lens, from the sun shimmering on the vast expanse of water to trees lit only by the moon; from close-ups of volcanic stones tumbled smooth by eons in the chilly waves to landscapes of showy green forests that roll off the horizon. “It’s been a family retreat for three generations…we hike along the Cascade River and take the kayaks out on the lake, but mostly we love being surrounded by nature and family.” They love the North Shore rocks, too, building campfires on the granite shores, skipping basalt stones on the water and practicing the art of balancing random rock assortments to create impermanent art objects. “You really don’t need much of a plan when you have a glass of wine and this view.” Editor's note: our North Shore photographer has chosen to remain anonymous.

I WAS NEVER A FAN OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT. Then, I read a book about him. Learning about how his architectural designs were created to connect to the natural environment, I began to see the beauty in his work. I felt the same way about a yard with a naturalized landscape of native plants and ground covers. To my uninformed eye, natural gardens looked messy and haphazard. Plants crowded together, short blooms among tall stalks. I liked formal and manicured scenes. Symmetrical and tidy landscapes. Looking at yards filled with native plants, I wondered, "is it a weed or a flower?" I couldn’t tell. I thought, “Eh, not for me.” Like many suburban homeowners, I felt the pressure to maintain a manicured lawn. I applied fertilizer and attacked weeds. I spent hours mowing, edging, trimming and pulling – all in the pursuit of a lush, green expanse of lawn, free from weeds. At the same time, another thick expanse of green was growing. Where turtles once sunned on fallen branches and herons walked the edges looking for food, a floating mass of bright green took over. The neighborhood stormwater pond became infested with duckweed. A tiny, free-floating aquatic plant, duckweed can serve as a valuable part of the ecosystem, but an infestation can damage the health of a pond by blocking sunlight and depleting oxygen concentration. An infestation occurs when water has excessive amounts of nutrients that are found in lawn fertilizers and pesticides. It’s estimated that 90% of products applied to lawns are washed off through rain and snowmelt. Runoff pollution is carried into lakes, streams, wetlands and groundwater. The EPA points to excessive fertilizer, herbicides and insecticides from agriculture, and residential areas as the leading causes of water quality problems. I hate to admit that I never connected the relationship between my landscaping and water quality. But now I couldn’t ignore it. My yard maintenance directly impacts the water quality of my community. Planting for clean water with native plants is part of the solution.

Native plants grew in this area before the land was used for buildings and suburban neighborhoods. Native plants include flowers, bushes, trees and ground covers that flourish without irrigation or fertilizer. They protect pollinators and feed wildlife. The long roots help flush out pollutants in runoff. Naturalized landscapes are a perfectly-calculated "mess" – designed with nature in mind. The disinterest I felt for native gardens is now a full-blown flora crush. I’m hooked. I don’t want symmetry in my yard, I want simpatico. The best resource I’ve found for starting a native plant garden is an organization called Blue Thumb – Planting for Clean Water. Their website is informative and easy to navigate. It provides a Minnesota-specific native plant selector tool and a list of places to purchase plants. Blue Thumb is listed as a resource on the Eden Prairie City Government website under Protecting Stormwater Ponds. The first step is finding out more about your soil. Is it clay, sandy, or silty? Maybe you are lucky to have loamy soil, a great mixture of all three. I have thick clay soil. It’s a tough soil to grow plants, but the beauty of going native is there is a perfect plant for every spot. Lots of native plants thrive in the clay soil surrounding this area. Determine if the area is sunny or shady, wet or dry. Plants need at least six hours of sun if they fall into the sunny category. And consider tree growth to determine if your garden will become partial shade in a few years. Shade or partial-shade plants can thrive in areas with less sun. Native plants that do well in standing water are perfect for rain gardens and shorelines. Others prefer drier, well-drained soil. The goal of native gardening is that it will eventually take care of itself. Selecting specific plants for specific areas will help ensure success. Native plants cost a bit more than non-native varieties. It pays to know what will have the best chance of survival. It has been two years since I planted my first native plants. I’m still often stumped by the weed or flower question. It’s a learning process. Luckily, I have friends who know more about this than I do. My gardener life-line, Lisa, gets lots of photos with the question, “name that plant?” My neighbor, Maureen, shares plants and advice from her native garden. I can’t wait to see the first sprouts of spring. More plants come up each season, filling in the spaces I once would have mulched and weeded. The seeds spread and root where the plants need to be. Butterflies and birds flit from plant to plant. It’s wild, untamed and the best part of all is no chemicals are needed. Planting for clean water protects pollinators and prevents pollution. That is a beautiful thing.

ATCHING A GLIMPSE OF A BUTTERFLY IN YOUR OWN BACK YARD ALWAYS FEELS JUST A LITTLE BIT MAGICAL. Most of our gardens only host an occasional visit from these ethereal creatures, but you can create
a garden bustling with butterflies if you attract them and create a habitat to keep them coming back. A little planning goes a long way. Three to four generations of monarchs may live during one Minnesota summer. You

can entice them to visit and even stay with the right garden design. Organize your plan. Group plants together for color and texture to attract and host several generations of butterflies. Plant a wide variety of perennial plants that bloom at varying times in the season. Select a cross-section of nectar-rich blooming plants such as sunflowers, pink Joe-Pye weed, purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, purple verbena, red bee balm, butterfly weed, and purple asters. Annuals also provide nectar and may bloom continuously throughout the season. You can encourage butterflies to take up residence by including host plants for their eggs. Their caterpillar

offspring will eat host plants, form cocoons and eventually transform into graceful next-generation butterflies. Some gardeners plant host plants in the center of their gardens so the chewed-up leaves are hidden by the nectar-rich blooms preferred by adult butterfly diners. Consult an expert for arrangement and proximity of host and feeding plants. Add a birdbath, then keep the water shallow and fresh. Small rocks in the basin give butterflies a place to perch. You can use a nectar feeder to supplement the butterflies’ food source. Make your own butterfly food by mixing water and sugar (10:1 ratio), boiling until the sugar dissolves.
