a person like me. I’m easily inspired, and I love to try new things. I also prefer short learning curves. My attention span is gnat-like. Our home wasn't immediately “list ready.” The contents of our notably large investment in plastic containers provide an archeological dig studying bygone hobbies, some an attempt at keeping active tykes occupied, others to soothe my marginally artistic soul. There was a misguided fabric painting phase. I decoupaged. Big tackle boxes are filled with pretty beads and their accoutrements. I learned to knit, but I enjoyed buying beautiful yarn more than actually knitting. My friends graduated to intricate sweater patterns. I never finished anything but mindlessly knitted scarves. I was sure scrapbooking would create a lasting legacy for our family. I

ingredients: + 1/2 pound good quality bittersweet chocolate, such as Lindt + 1/2 pound good quality semisweet chocolate, such as Ghiradelli + 1 cup heavy cream + 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier, optional + 1 tablespoon prepared coffee + 1 tablespoon vanilla extract + Confectioner's sugar + Cocoa powder
directions: 1. Chop the chocolates finely with a sharp knife. Place them in a heat-proof mixing bowl. 2. Heat the cream in a small saucepan just until it boils. Turn off the heat and allow the cream to sit for 20 seconds. Pour the cream through a fine-mesh sieve into the bowl of chocolate. With a wire whisk, slowly stir the cream and chocolates together until the chocolate is melted. Whisk in the liqueur, coffee and vanilla. set aside at room temperature for one hour. 3. With two teaspoons, spoon round balls of the chocolate mixture onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. refrigerate for 30 minutes, until firm. Roll each dollop in your hands to make a ball, roll in confectioner's sugar, cocoa powder or both. These will keep refrigerated for weeks, but serve at room temperature. WHY ALL THE VAPING? More than 1.3 million high school students started vaping last year. That’s nearly double the number than the previous year. It’s also the largest recorded increase in 44 years of any substance tracked. A sobering statistic. Students don’t associate vaping with tobacco use because of the fun smells, flavors and clever containers. (Parents, take a closer look at that USB look-a-like.) Companies that market vaping have misled the public into thinking it is a way to wean off cigarettes and that it isn’t as harmful. They’ve even changed the name from e-cigarettes - vaping sounds much cooler and less harmful. This product contains nicotine (a thimble full of which can kill a horse) and other chemicals that are burned into an aerosol and inhaled. Just when people have star ted to get the message of how harmful smoking is, vaping is creating a new kind of smoker one that may have devastating consequences on our society. Why are teens vaping? The reasons are similar to those of past generations. They want to fit in. They are stressed and tired, and the nicotine (in addition to the caffeine and sugar products they consume) give them the boost they need to get through their over-scheduled days. It is amazing how teens can manage their busy lives. A full school day, the practice of some spor t, club or activity, add hours of homework and squeeze in some online socializing, and all that’s left is a few hours for sleep. Rise tired, and repeat again. Something has to keep them going, so chemical intake becomes the natural progression. Parents, your children are looking for role models to help them, and though they won’t necessarily ask, you can offer them better ways to manage their lives. If you are struggling with it yourself, give us a call.

EXPLORING THE EDEN PRAIRIE ART CENTER
TWIN CITIES DENIZENS ARE PROUD OF OUR LIVELY AND THRIVING ARTS SCENE. We talk it up with newcomers and show it off when we have out-of-town guests. But, did you know we have our own artistic gem - hidden in plain sight - right here in Eden Prairie? It’s the Eden Prairie Art Center, located at 7650 Equitable Drive. The Eden Prairie Art Center opened in the spring of 2009 with a mission to “foster creativity in the community.” It has been doing that and more for the past nine years. It’s the single biggest gift ever given to the City of Eden Prairie. Late resident Richard Samson’s family donated the building for the Art Center in 2007. After retiring from a successful business career in the late 1980’s, Samson asked an architect friend to help him design and build an art studio. Samson used the studio and generously shared it his friends and other members of the community until his death in 2006. Kristen Doherty and Jes Schrom, both friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about art and its benefits, lead the center. They believe everyone should have the chance to experience, experiment with and enjoy art. You can feel their excitement when you walk in

the door and it’s easy to see why. Our very own, not-so-hidden gem has a lot to offer and it’s different than other art centers. + HIGH-QUALITY INSTRUCTION IN A WELCOMING, OPEN ENVIRONMENT. Beginners are encouraged. Failure is embraced. “Try it” is their mantra. Talented instructors with the credentials to back it up teach a wide range of classes in drawing, painting, jewelry, clay, glass, and more. You can start as a toddler and continue taking classes for the rest of your life. + OPEN STUDIO. Open time in the studio is usually limited to those currently enrolled in a program/class. At the Art Center, the only pre-requisite is to complete one class. After that, you are able to take advantage of the 25 hours of open studio time offered each week. + FLEXIBLE. There are advantages to being small, nimble and community-focused. Kristen and Jen welcome all feedback and suggestions. “We need to know what people want and then figure out how to make it happen.” To paraphrase Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz, sometimes what you are looking for has been in your own backyard the entire time. Starring Students PERFORMING INSTITUTE OF MINNESOTA THE ACRONYM PIM REPRESENTS AN OPEN DOOR FOR CURIOSITY. It’s pronounced “Pim.” The “Performing Institute of Minnesota Arts High School” sounds a bit old-fashioned and doesn’t quite fit. The modern arts-focused charter school is authorized by the University of St. Thomas and is located on Flying Cloud Drive right here in Eden Prairie, within the former walls of Eagle Ridge Academy. Many Eden Prairie residents remember when the school formerly known as the Main Street School of Performing Arts acquired the property to relocate to Eden Prairie from Hopkins in 2016. The $6 million undertaking moved from purchase to project quickly: PiM opened its doors for the 2017-2018 school year. The move was the cherry on top. In fact, you might have been there - a party of Main Street School alumni, staff, and volunteers made it a community effort. That’s the norm for PiM. In spite of its high bar for traditional 18

academic success in tandem with Main Street’s impressive roster of field-professional graduates, PiM maintains a tight community and familial environment. We talked to Rachel Brady, Outreach Coordinator and teacher in the PiM theater department. “Our mission is artistic excellence and academic rigor for every learner.” With top-of-the-line equipment and an average of half of each student’s day spent on art, the 9th through 12th graders are supplied with the tools to meet every facet of educational and artistic success. Each student chooses a major: Visual Arts, Media Arts, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Theater, Dance, or Musical Theater. From dance studios to screen printing facilities, PiM can facilitate growth for just about anyone. “PiM wanted to create a space that could be a community hub,” Brady told us. By day, PiM is the Arts High School. But after the last school bell rings, PiM’s local professional artistic partners - working actors and crew (like Tyler Michaels’s Trademark Theatre Company members), professional dancers (like members of Black Label Movement, the dance company founded by Carl Flink) - along with voice and instrumental lessons, and student performances open to the public fill the school. “We wanted to lay roots around the area to be an arts hub for this community.” The ability to interact, study, and perform with professionals underlines the seriousness that PiM has for its students’ artistic futures. That’s one reason for the new facilities. The other? They wanted more room while keeping class sizes small. “We still have space and we want more students,” Brady said. A student who would thrive at PiM is interested in his or her chosen artistic pursuit in a passionate, dedicated capacity and has dreams to pursue it professionally. They can sometimes feel under-stimulated at traditional schools. They would benefit from academic and creative challenges, and they desire a creative community.

As a charter school, PiM is tuition-free and holds the same standards that a family would find at any other Minnesota public school. New student artists participate in an arts workshop to gauge different strengths and abilities, enabling PiM to tailor their arts education in a personalized way. According to pimartshs.org: “Our arts curriculum focuses on Theory and Creation. Courses of study are designed to specifically enhance students’ ability to create their own work, placing an emphasis on the history and application of core elements of each discipline.” A “jury” is hosted to showcase learners’ talents and provide feedback. PiM also hosts a monthly showcase called “No Shame” - a student-comprised variety show for all majors’ participation. Even with meticulous programming, the student body is supportive. “Our students are really rooted in community,” Brady said, “It feels like family.” The students and teachers get to know each other well, and the small class sizes and variety of majors encourage mentoring. Last school year, PiM’s graduation rate exceeded the national average by 2.2% and exceeded the 20

Minnesota average by 3.5%. PiM partners with the University of Minnesota to adopt their “Ramp-Up to Readiness” program, a preparatory program designed to prepare learners for whatever education step beyond high school they choose to take. In average environments, artistically gifted kids can feel different. “This is a safe place to land,” Brady said about PiM, given the school’s goal to help new students thrive, feel like they belong, and be ready to succeed. “Students are given this playground of really fancy, really nice space.” Their Emerging Professionals Program speaks for itself: “Every year we have students who work professionally.” PiM's goal is to adapt to support them. PiM continues to celebrate successes and fine-tune their custom approach from within. The school is eager to welcome new students - incoming freshmen and first-time upperclassmen alike - for the next school year. Rachel Brady sums up her feelings about her school: “My goal is always to be at a school like PiM.”

Raised beds are a popular alternative to in-ground gardening. Planting in raised beds makes it easier to enhance soil quality, control weeds and prevent crop diseases. Raised

gardens minimize kneeling on the ground and muddy shoes. It’s simpler to protect raised gardens from hungry bunnies. They can be built to fit most spaces. Raised beds don’t need to be big – you want them small enough to tend the plants without stepping on the soil. Some gardeners even choose to build elevated gardens on backyard decks. Many vegetables can thrive and produce high yields in raised beds. Consider trying your favorite combination of carrots, beets, radishes, onions, parsnips, lettuce, spinach, kale, tomatoes or potatoes. Find a location that has level ground and gets the right amount of sunlight. Six to eight hours per day is ideal. Cedar is the most common wood choice because its natural oils help prevent rotting. Make sure the bed allows for at least 12 inches of soil depth. Plants need a minimum of six inches to root, but to accommodate a variety of vegetables, most gardeners build boxes at least 12-inches deep. Your soil mixture should consist of topsoil, peat moss and composted manure. Ask for garden gloves and a cute hat for Valentine’s Day. Then plan ahead, and you’ll be ready for planting season. a few questions about our photographer's camera, then - with refreshing, uninhibited purpose - went back to the business of learning while playing. They fluidly shifted from seeking out groups to being alone. A little girl contentedly watered plants and spilled some water. After making her rounds, she wiped the spill up with a colorful cloth and hung it up to dry on a miniature clothesline. A boy painted a multi-layered acrylic masterpiece at an easel.
Children assembled a puzzle map. Future readers practiced letter sounds. Industrious girls concentrated on tool skills with scissors and a screwdriver. Everyone picked up before moving on. Preschoolers also often wear their hearts on their sleeves. This group showed their love for the world with a special valentine, made with little handprints in the shape of a big heart and captioned with Burt Bacharach’s beloved lyrics, "What the world needs now is love, sweet love." Its companion piece is another group endeavor; a studied depiction of our planet that’s as tall as the children. We found inspiration in the magical authenticity of these young artists and makers.
