And the cats. And any other pet for that matter. I grew up in a strictly fish family until around 3rd grade. We did a science project about tadpoles and I was gifted one of the frogs at the end of the lesson. I named her after my teacher at the time. Mrs. P lived a very healthy and long life in my dad's home office until my later years of college. We all still miss her greatly. In 6th grade, my family adopted a Shih Tzu and Japanese Chin mix named Holly. She fit right in, a lover of naps, treats, and a little anti-social. She is a lot older these days, and has trouble hearing, but is still the most adored Johnson family member by far.

Water, water, water! Make sure everything is getting enough
water, about an inch per week for most plants. The best time to water is always in the morning to minimize evaporation.
» Continue to fertilize only annuals and vegetables. They still need regular fertilizing every four weeks for good production. It is important to discontinue fertilizing perennials and shrubs. Fertilizing now will encourage new growth that will not be ready for fall freezing temperatures.

Use caution if you need to apply pesticides or insecticidal
soaps. They generally are not as effective in the summer heat. If you need to use, the early morning is best when it is cooler.
» Enjoy a fresh harvest of vegetables from your garden or at your local farmer’s market. Many vegetables will be ready for harvest by August. Minnesota favorites like beans, tomatoes, and peppers will be available near the end of the month.
» Keep weeding. Weeds compete with your garden plants for water and nutrients.
» Divide daylilies, bearded iris, and peonies. They can be divided from the end of August into September. Water a few days ahead of division and again after they are transplanted. Mulch well.

Plant Fall bloomers. By the end of August, plant fall-blooming
annuals or perennials such as asters and mums. Your local Garden Center like The Mustard Seed will have a fresh selection of annuals to freshen up your planters.

CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE HAVE HEARD TELL OF THE WONDERLAND THAT IS THE CHILDREN’S THEATRE COMPANY. The transformative Midwestern magic that teleports attendees is known far and wide - but those of us in Eden Prairie are lucky enough to live just a stone’s throw away. Filling the role of Artistic Director for over twenty years is Peter C. Brosius. “We’re a group of adults who have been working in the profession for a long time,” Brosius said. “We know our audience is smart and critical - they’ll make politics, fashion, literature - and they’re doing it right now.” The CTC does what all children’s media should do - presents challenging ideas and delights with its effervescent and diverse styles of storytelling. Each production has been analyzed and allotted a suggested minimum audience age that can be found on their website, childrenstheatre.org. There are many tools for parents and educators that the CTC provides - including guides for families with different sensory needs, and at least one showing of each production that is specifically sensory-friendly. “The sensory-friendly shows are some of our actors’ favorite performances,” said Brosius. You will also find American Sign language and Audio Described performance dates for each show on the website. The 2018-2019 season is full of pertinent and poignant subject matter in all age group’s productions. Last Stop on Market Street will run from September 15th to October 21st, I Come From Arizona runs October 9th to November 25th, and 2018 will go out with How The Grinch Stole Christmas! beginning November 6th.

Last Stop on Market Street is based on a children’s book written by Matt de la Peña, illustrated by Christian Robinson. CTC’s show announcement recommends it for “curious 5-year-olds and up.” It’s about a boy from the suburbs, CJ, who visits his grandmother in the city. It explores new and different characters that CJ meets, and how his internal world changes to welcome them. “It’s about the food, the culture, the noise outside,” Brosius said, “We watch him negotiate his way.” The show is co-commissioned with the Chicago Children’s Theatre and directed by Henry Godinez. I Come From Arizona is an adaptation of the book Augusta and Noble written by Carlos Murillo. The company recommends it for “engaged 8-year-olds and up.” It follows 14-year-old Gabi Castillo, a smart Mexican-American girl, as she attends a prestigious high school in Chicago and discovers a secret about herself and her family. “It is going inside immigration,” said Brosius, “It asks: where is her courage?” It will be directed by Lisa Portes and is premiering worldwide on CTC’s stage. We will welcome winter, once again, with Dr. Seuss’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas!, a revered CTC production. It is suggested, of course, for everyone. The book and lyrics are by Timothy Mason, and will be directed by Peter Brosius. Along with the expected joy of any production in the holiday season, the classic pays due diligence to the timeless message. Of Grinch!, Brosius says “We watch a community have to change!” Some of the subject matter of the upcoming productions may seem serious for young eyes and ears, and that’s the point. CTC’s work also inspires. “We know there are all kinds of families,” said Brosius. Diversity of all kind is of incredible importance to the Company. CTC hosted a 2018 Pride Family Event for LGBT families. At least fifty percent of the actors onstage are people of color. “The power of seeing yourself onstage is not to be underestimated.” In additional exciting CTC news, there will be student auditions for Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical at the Mall of America on August 18th, 2018 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. They are looking for ages 10 to 18, and the casting call states “CTC is encouraging students of any/all genders, racial backgrounds, abilities, and experience levels to audition.” Additional information and timeslot registration can be found on their website. The Children’s Theater Company is well-deserving of its renown CTC won the Tony Award for excellence in regional theatre in 2003. In 2004, Time Magazine named them the number one children’s theatre in the nation. Time also referred to them as “cutting-edge.” As you’ll see in their current season over a decade later, the observation remains well-deserved. “We start with extraordinary respect for young people, their understanding, their empathy,” said Brosius. “We know that the work we do can stay with someone for the rest of their life.”

DOGS RULE IN THIS LITTLE CORNER OF EDEN PRAIRIE. They exercise on nearby Three Rivers trails when they’re humoring humans with civilized runs and walks on leashes. They romp freestyle at the off-leash park just down the street. They ponder life as a dog, gazing at lakes and wetlands while neighbor friends chat. Carmel Park offers lots of smells and birds to chase. Their people take turns hosting book clubs and happy hours, and there’s always a pushover sneaking morsels to the good dog of the house. We caught up with just a few of them this month at Bryant Lake Regional Park.
A HAPPY SURPRISE

Percy joined his family as the best Christmas present ever just last year. Allison Miedema’s kids pleaded for a pup for over ten years. They moved to their new home and the time was right. Allison pretended a friend ran out of gas, but returned with a tiny ball of fur. Percy’s first impression of his family included wide eyes and delighted squeals. He’s a busy guy. Percy has three young humans to chase and stays fit with plenty of intentional exercise. He enjoys long walks by the lake and is also “enrolled” in swimming lessons, taught by his kids. He excels at fetch and adds his own special keep-away twist when he decides the time is right. Percy is only nine months old and is proud to be 99% accident-free. (It’s hard for Minnesota pups to learn when the snow is so deep.) He lets his people know it’s time to go out by ringing bells placed strategically by the doors. Gus & Stella The mid-life mixed-breeds
The Doeden-Brusseau family rescued Gus and Stella through SecondHand Hounds. They both have formal names for their business cards: August (his arrival month) Max and Stella (Artois) Maxine. Their mom, Ann, bestows middle names upon her dogs and they’ve all been Max or Maxine since her teens. Both Gus and Stella were potty trained with bells by their canine big sister Sadie, who has since passed away. “Tug” is their sport and they’ve dismantled freshly planted sod to play with a square of it. At seven, Gus has lots of hobbies, including fetch, trying to carry lots of toys in his mouth at once, guarding his perimeter from the neighbor dog, Gabby, and making sure his mom doesn’t pay attention to any other dogs. Gus is learning to talk and can almost say, “I love you.” He holds up his end of the conversation with his people when basking in belly rubs. While his humans decided against orthodontia to fix his misaligned jaw, they did opt for orthopedic surgery to correct a leg that was growing crookedly. Always the gracious host, Gus welcomes family members and every visitor with the formal presentation of a toy. Good boy, Gus. Stella is six and a half and the queen of her castle. She’s claimed a throne by the window and ensures that the backyard is free from intruding wildlife. If she spots a sign of movement from her perch, one of her humans has to open the back door so she can flush out the offending squirrel, bird or bunny. The thrill of the chase is followed by a prompt return to guard duty from her chair. A multi-faceted girl, Stella is also full of cuddles. She reaches out to hold hands or ask for a pat and sleeps nestled under the covers by her parents’ feet. Good girl, Stella.

Lucy A senior Cav-a-Jack
Lucy was destined to be part of her family. Kris, her mom-to-be, wanted a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; Kris’s son wanted a Jack Russell Terrier. After their family dog died, they saw a Craig’s List ad from a family who couldn’t take care of their three-year-old “Cav-a-Jack.” Kris knew they’d be her forever family and Lucy doesn’t need to know she’s a compromise breed. Kris jokes she came to them “as is” and that training isn’t their strong suit. At ten years old, Lucy has opinions. She eschews toys and fetches, opting for entertaining her humans with games of chase and tag. Quite the social butterfly, Lucy takes her people for walks to the park with her neighbor dog friends Simmons and Max. She rubs noses and plays with her neighbor, Lilly. She can be a homebody, too. Lucy helps her humans cook and is always ready to tidy up spills in the kitchen. She spends quality time snuggling with her mom when she’s reading or watching tv. Good girl, Lucy.

Remy was born in Pennsylvania. Her mom and dad drove all the way there to bring her home to Eden Prairie. Even though she’s only two years old, she has an important job – helping her dad, John Neuman, hunt pheasants. She’s a quick learner. As much as she likes her field career, Remy will also do anything for a carrot and her family’s small children are proud when she listens to them. If her people have plans to fish, train for a race or even play fetch, she’s game for it because she just wants to be part of the fam-

ily. She’s a fan of car rides, too, and usually tries to ride “shotgun.” “Remy” is derived from “Remington,” after all. My Dad was a physician in Grand Forks, North Dakota in the days when doctors did house calls and allowed patients to call them at home. He once said, “I don’t know if you have the bedside manner to be a doctor, but I think you would do well with animals”. I took his advice and after a summer internship at a mixed animal practice in Cortez, Colorado, I was intrigued and motivated to do whatever it took to become a veterinarian. JIM, TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR DAD My dad was a true professional. He wore a suit coat to work, got involved in the community and when my friends called him “Mr. Nelson” he always corrected them, “it’s Dr Nelson”. The prefix isn’t that important to me. My Dad behaved the way veterinarians behave today and was allowed the time to listen and develop rela-

tionships with his patients. He understood how stress influenced outcomes when dealing with patient’s health issues. In the old days taking a good history was vital, today finding previous histories can be complicated as people bounce from specialist to specialist.
