inter is a great time to get inspired and start making plans to create the outdoor environment that will be enjoyed with our friends and family during the warmer months. Great projects begin with planning. We offer the following thoughts to spark your creativity, and help you begin the process of designing and realizing your outside environment.
Assess Your Current Landscape Situation Get your warm attire, grab a pad of paper and walk your yard. Dream a bit- what do you want to achieve? Think about which plants were successes and which were not. Did you have plants that outgrew their space and will need to be moved or divided? What new plants would you like to try? Take a few moments and dream of a new and exciting project, like a patio or a water feature. Make sure to write it all down.
Become an artist and make a rough sketch of the area to reference later.
Think About Your Budget A good plan, broken down into goal increments such as this coming summer, next year, and the years following, will allow for a more budgetfriendly and realistic look at what is possible.
Do Your Research Planning and research is half the fun! Have any of your neighbors created great environments? If so, how did they do it? Look online at local plant catalogs and landscape examples to get your creativity flowing!
Plant Your Landscape at The Right Time of Year
for years to come if you plant them at certain times of the year. Look to gardening websites or ask your landscaper what times are best for the plants you have chosen for your outdoor space. Making Magic ARTICLE NANCY RENNEKE
CHRIS HARRISTHAL HAS BEEN MAKING MAGIC SINCE HE WAS SIX YEARS OLD. His big brother borrowed a book of magic tricks from the library and learned how to make a silk handkerchief appear. Harristhal remembers being amazed - “figuring it out drove me nuts” - and was determined to learn the secret. He doesn’t know how many times he checked the book out, but he mastered that trick and many more. Decades later, Harristhal practices employment law by day and his alter ego, Kristoff the Magician, amazes people all around the world with elegant magic. Harristhal grew up in Ely, MN and his family owned an outfitting business near the Canadian border. When it became apparent that magic was a serious obsession, his mom made a vest for his act. His first gigs were church-sponsored appearances on Native American reservations when he was in junior high school. He performed the first time in a bar when he was only 16. “It was a fun way to make money,” he remembers, “better than washing dishes for my family’s business.” He mastered new tricks throughout college and law school, calling gigs “cross-training” for developing trial presentation skills. Now, when he’s not trying high level cases for Larkin Hoffman Law Firm, he performs at everything from small cocktail parties to black-tie events attended by hundreds of people. Magic is more than moonlighting to Harristhal. “There’s no such thing as a bad magic show,” he quips when asked to list his favorite appearances, “I love to watch peoples’ jaws hit the floor.” He also loves to make them laugh. He’s a comedy magician, working stand-up into both parlor magic for large groups and

VALENTINE’S DAY—THE DAY SET ASIDE FOR LOVE—IS CUPID’S SPECIAL DAY. The expectations are bountiful: Flowers, candy (preferably chocolate) and a romantic candlelight dinner. It’s a day of romance on steroids. In reality, Valentine’s Day is a great time to show that special someone how much they truly mean to you. But do we really need to fall into the same old stereotypical flowers-candy-romantic dinner routine each year? Not that there’s anything wrong with it, but how about some originality? Consider stepping out into the great unknown and breaking free from your old tried-and-true bag of tricks and trying something different for Valentine’s Day. I know it’s scary, but I’ve got some ideas for you to help you get your creative juices flowing. First, your homework: Make a list of the top five (or more) things you love about your special someone. This one should be easy. Bring the list and share it with your sweetheart while you enjoy your time together on your unique Valentine’s Day date. Trust me, your date will not forget being told exactly why you love them. Senior Care that Feels like Family THIS IS THE FINAL CHAPTER TO OUR SERIAL ABOUT AN ELDERLY LADY, HER DAUGHTER AND KAREN LAWRENCE, WHO WAS HIRED TO MANAGE HER CARE THROUGH MATRIX HOME HEALTHCARE SPECIALISTS. Lawrence owns and manages three care homes in the Twin Cities, all situated in nice neighborhoods. They offer on-site health care in a home environment for people with chronic and sometimes complicated conditions, including cognitive issues such as Alzheimer’s. At first, Lawrence’s staff primarily provided her featured client with personal care services to create a safe and healthy environment in her own home. About a year later, her medical needs became more significant, yet she was still able to remain at home with the help of rotating 24-hour staff. “We weigh both the client’s and the family members’ wishes. We can help you discern what’s best for both you and your loved one.” While it was her family’s wish for her to live out her days in her own home, the combination of her diabetes, arthritis and memory loss added up to one of the typical reasons many seniors need to relocate: needing two people to help her get in and out of bed. PART 3 “Mom’s care got pretty complex.” We always hoped we wouldn’t have to move mom. The Matrix staff did everything they could to keep her in her house. But, once she lost so much mobility and balance that it took two people to get her in and out of bed, we accepted that it was time for her to move. We were worried that a broken hip could send her to the hospital and a long rehab for the rest of her life. She was on a special diet and needed help with her diabetes monitoring and treatment. She required professional administration of her arthritis pain medication and an antidepressant. I was so grateful that Matrix even handled mom’s prescription refills. If a dosage needed to be adjusted, they arranged an appointment with mom’s gerontologist and made sure she got the amount she needed. She’d also grown more easily confused and even a little paranoid. She took quite a few meds and I was so grateful that one group was coordinating all her care. They knew mom and had her very best interests at heart. They also knew me and understood what my family and I wanted for her care. Mom needed regular care not just for her health and mobility, she needed to be in a nurturing environment with round the clock staff who knew how to help her feel calm and valued. “I can’t imagine that big facilities can be this individualized.” We still thought mom would be overwhelmed by a big facility. She’d spent the last fifty years in her home. If we moved her to one of the nice local memory care centers, we thought she would be even more confused and lost in such a big space. Mom moved into a small group home where only eight elderly people get round the clock care from Matrix staff. It’s not her own house, but it does feel like a home. She has her own bedroom with her own furniture. There’s a kitchen if she wants to help cook. There’s a pretty little garden and a bird feeder. They have neighbors and watch children board the school bus. She likes to sleep in, and the staff doesn’t care that she really only wants coffee and a slice of cheese before lunch. They all eat lunch and dinner at

one family table together and she doesn’t have the pressure of wondering where to sit, which was always something she worried about when we visited assisted living facilities. Her dog lives there, too. He stays close to mom, but he also enjoys all the other people who live at her care home. Life for my mom at this Matrix care home feels like a family. They have fun things to do every day and that helps keep mom calm. Her favorite activities are trivia and music. She loved it when they brought a petting zoo. Her caregivers take her out for ice cream after her haircuts. They do special things for all the people who live there. A gentleman who was a World War II pilot goes to the cell phone lot with one of the caregivers to watch planes take off at the airport. Another man likes yard work and I saw him sweeping leaves off the driveway this fall. My mom likes art, and the staff sit and draw with her. They say she remembers things and is less anxious when she has a colored pencil in her hand. I feel like Karen and her staff see past all the challenges that come with their clients’ advanced ages and view them as wonderful individuals who still have potential for happy days. I wouldn’t be good at the work myself and I’m beyond grateful that these kind and talented people take care of my mom. They craft beautiful custom furniture pieces, small home objects and accessories, as well as sculpture, jewelry, and other beautiful and useful pieces of art in their Northeast Minneapolis studio. The husband and wife team are makers first and foremost - we talked to Erin Moren about the aesthetic, process, and Minnesota roots of Tandem Made. Nate Moren grew up in Eden Prairie, Erin is from New Hope. Tandem Made embodies everything good about shopping local, shopping small: their pieces are high quality, one of a kind, and beautiful. What isn’t small is their range. From the rustic-modern sliding barn doors and ultra sleek wine room installations in their portfolio, to the Dotted Lines accent bowl and Richlite bottle opener on their webshop, the variety of their useful objects is vast. It’s especially impressive when you take into consideration the cohesiveness of the aesthetic and feeling throughout all of Tandem Made’s work. They met in the woodshop at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. “We always knew we wanted to work together,” Erin said. Nate already had a degree in cabinet making when they met. After graduating from MCAD, they got married. They spent some time in Chicago, while Erin attended Columbia University, but the plan was always to come back to Minnesota. They worked in a shared workshop for a while, up until three years ago, when they moved into their own design/build studio. One thing Erin kept returning to is the relationships they’ve built here. PAY AS YOU GO; THIS IS A TERM MANY OF US ARE FAMILIAR WITH AS CONSUMER TRENDS SHIFT TOWARDS ONLY PAYING FOR THE PORTION OF A PRODUCT USED RATHER THAN THE PRODUCT AS A WHOLE. This has given way to companies with missions based around renting out premium goods to increase accessibility. Companies such as Zip Car are great examples of this as they only charge members for the amount of time they use a car making it easier for people to navigate life without owning a vehicle of their own. Leasing is based on a similar principle as it allows you to pay for the portion of the vehicles’ life you will be using rather than the total cost, providing the consumer with more car for less money. With leasing, your dollar will stretch further than finance payments will, on average, be around $150 more per month than a lease on the exact same vehicle. Other advantages include tax incentives as well as the ability to lease a vehicle through a business using pretax dollars. These can all add up to decrease the amount leaving your bank account as you drive off in a new vehicle. One of the major benefits of leasing is being able to put little to no money down. Putting money down can be nice, especially if it helps get to a monthly payment that you are more comfortable with, but it is not necessary. On the other end, for clients financing I often suggest putting between 10% and 20% down on a vehicle so when it comes time to trade it in, often at 36 months (which is also very common lease term), the chances of having positive equity in the vehicle will be greater as you have paid for more of the vehicle’s life than you have used leaving you with positive equity. This is another aspect that completely disappears with leasing as fluctuations in the market are irrelevant as you will always have the ability to walk away from the vehicle. A common concern of leasing candidates is that they are too hard on their vehicles and are worried about the expenses that can come if there is wear and tear that is not considered ‘normal’. This should not be a major concern as there are many programs that will cover these expenses. For example, Lincoln offers ‘Wear Care’ which can only cost a couple dollars a month and can protect you against a vast range of possible wear. Having a set cash flow each month is also much easier with leasing as you will not need to account for maintenance and repairs that crop up as a vehicle ages. With the majority of costly repairs occurring after warranties have run out, there becomes a need to set aside a ‘car repair fund,’ so when they do occur, the cost doesn’t completely disrupt your monthly cash flow. These contingency budgets disappear with leasing as a leased vehicle will always be under warranty; meaning you get the best years of a vehicle without the expensive repairs that come once a vehicle is no longer under manufacturer warranty. With the average consumer owning a vehicle for 36 months, the benefits of owning a vehicle outright don’t really apply. A vehicle is worth purchasing if it is a long-term purchase that you plan on keeping once it is fully paid off. However, with the increasingly complicated technologies being packed into vehicles today, it is making less sense to own a vehicle as repairing and replacing electronics can cost thousands when the vehicle warranty has run out. Automobile technology is evolving faster than ever inside and out with smaller, more efficient combustion engines that are quickly going out of fashion as they make way for all electric motors. While engines have been making strides towards efficiency, convenience features have been striving to anticipate virtually any need or desire you could have while on the road. Need cooled and heated cup holders, what about massaging seats, is on-board WIFI a must for trips to the cabin, do you want your car to Parallel Park itself? The good news is these are readily available features with new ones flooding the market at on a nearly daily basis. So, if you like to have a set budget, prefer lower payments, don’t like to put money down, or just never want to worry about whether you will have costly repairs, leasing may be just the thing for you.

Class of 2012 alum, Ella Beaudoin is a perfect example of a student who was challenged both artistically and academically. Recently, she was awarded a Fellowship in Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) with the National Science Foundation. Dreams Class of 2007 alum, Paige Klone recently attended the Golden Globes for her work as an executive assistant to the producer of Mozart in the Jungle, which took home the win for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. That producer happened to be Jason Schwartzman, her latest employer in Los Angeles, where she has lived since 2012. Klone relocated to Hollywood after finishing her undergrad in Writing and Producing for Television at Columbia Chicago. Klone has also worked closely with Jamie Kennedy and David Koechner, assisting with life as well as their television and film projects. In addition to assisting on a-list film sets, Klone continues to write and produce her own projects. With a career that requires exemplary creativity, stamina, and resilience, Klone credits PiM for her drive. As she shared, “I learned the more you put into something, the more you get out of it. To create something consistently every single day, bad or good, because the more you create, the more you’ll learn.” At just twenty-six years old, 07’ alumni Rebecca Wilder, relocated to China to found a center for orphaned and disabled children called Hope Station. The non-profit, operated out of Chengdu, was the brain child of Wilder after her experiences from an earlier internship. Together with her business partner, they spent months researching different models for foster care. After Wilder returned to the U.S. she successfully fundraised, formed a board of directors and made the vision for Hope Station a reality. Wilder remembers her time in art school fondly, “It widened my cultural and artistic horizons, and that is a huge deal in living overseas. I’m so thankful I had the chance to major in music during high school, without jeopardizing my excavation site in South Africa. When asked about how

Planning for the Growing Season ARTICLE MARY WALCKER
AS WE ENTER THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY, IT’S TIME TO START PREPARING FOR THE GROWING SEASON. “Timing is critical when starting seeds indoors; starting too early can lead to unhealthy, overgrown plants. Ideally, transplants are relatively small and stocky plants that have five to seven leaves. Best results are obtained by reading the seed packets for starting dates of both vegetables and flowering annuals. The time needed to grow a transplant is usually given on the seed packet in weeks from the date to plant them outdoors, which for warm season plants is typically Memorial Day in central Minnesota,” Beth Berlin. PLANNING YOUR VEGETABLE GARDEN: 1. Decide what you want to eat. Is your goal to grow for your summer diet? Or do you plan to can or freeze your harvest for the winter months? Planning how you will use your produce is a great way to narrow down what to plant. 2. Decide how much space you can reasonably prepare for planting and maintenance. Is your garden already established or do you have to build or expand? Whatever garden space you have whether it’s a few containers or an acre, it is wise to draw it out on paper, make a spreadsheet, or draw a picture of it so you can map out your plans. Get the kids involved! It’s really fun to make a plan for the growing season. Remember, there are also a variety of plants you can tuck into your landscaping. 3. Get organized. Go through your seeds and see what you think might still be viable. An idea to stay organized is to create a seed box, sorted by variety and planting date.
