Lifestyle Letter GRATITUDE. You can usually find the fount of Thanksgiving’s classic emotion in the most likely places. Sometimes – if you’re really lucky – you experience gratitude thanks to an eye-opening, unexpected source. Since I started writing for Eden Prairie Lifestyle, I’ve been learning lessons about leadership from someone less than half my age.

This issue is Nora Johnson’s coda at Lifestyle; her nascent career has taken off in a big way after launching this magazine with our publisher. I want to avoid diminishing her power just because she’s much younger than me, but I feel undeservedly proud of her. Wisdom, after all, can come in the form of a talented young person with a refreshing perspective, a compassionate heart, an infectious laugh and a polished presence. Nora is the brand of editor writers love. She honors voice and doesn’t dictate story angles. Now she’s passing the editorial reins to me with a supportive spirit that seems a little like a unique role reversal if I concentrate on it, but mostly feels natural, just like any adept leader and mentor training a successor. This Thanksgiving, I’m most thankful for my husband, our daughters, our work-inprogress puppy, our extended family and community of friends. I’ll raise a glass to my parents and brother, who will always be part of me. Another corner of my heart is grateful for my friend, Nora. She’s taught me a lot about respect for writers, photographers and creative curation. Thanks too, to our publisher for giving me the opportunity to fill her very capable vintage sneakers.

LEFTOVER MAKEOVER INGREDIENTS + 5 Pounds Yukon Gold potatoes + 1/2 Cup butter + 2 Cups Parmesan cheese + 1 Cup chopped fresh chives + 1 1/2 Cups cream cheese + 1/2 Medium head garlic, peeled and minced + Salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes; cook until tender but still firm. Drain and return to stove over low heat to dry for 1 to 2 minutes. Add butter, Parmesan cheese, chives, cream cheese, garlic, salt, and pepper. Use a potato masher to mash until smooth, and serve. Recipe courtesy of allrecipes.com

LEFTOVER THANKSGIVING POT PIE INGREDIENTS + 2 Tablespoons olive oil + 1 Onion, chopped + 2 Cloves garlic + 2 Teaspoons dried thyme + 3 Tablespoons flour + 2 Cups chicken or vegetable broth + 3 Cups leftover turkey, cut into pieces + 2 Cups frozen vegetables, like peas and carrots + Salt and pepper, to taste + 4 Cups leftover mashed potatoes

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400°F. Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Stir in the onion, garlic, and thyme. Cook until vegetables are soft, about 10 minutes. Sprinkle flour over onion and garlic; stir for about 2 minutes. Mix in broth and simmer until thickened, 4-5 minutes. Stir in cooked turkey and frozen vegetables. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer the turkey mixture to a 2-quart baking dish or ramekins over a baking sheet. Spread the mashed potatoes over the turkey mixture. Bake until the filling bubbles, for 20-25 minutes. Turn your broiler on and broil until the mashed potato tops are golden, about 3 minutes. Cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Recipe courtesy of wishfulchef.com

ADD A CUP OF KINDNESS As you’re preparing for your own feast, pick up a few extra items to share with our neighbors who need a helping hand. The PROP food shelf accepts non-perishable food donations and grocery store gift cards every weekday morning. MoveFwd serves homeless young people in Eden Prairie and welcomes toiletries, portable foods like protein bars, new socks and gift cards. (Check both websites for drop off hours.) Another non-profit, Help at Your Door, delivers groceries to elderly and disabled people in Eden Prairie to help them stay in their own homes. Consider volunteering to help with deliveries while you’re running your own errands. If your family makes year-end cash donations, it’s nice to include children in choosing the non-profit organizations that mean the most to you as a deliberate exercise in giving back. MIX IN A DASH OF NEW FRIENDS Many of us grew up sitting at the “kids’ table.” Some of us remember sitting elbow to elbow with big, raucous groups of relatives, others have more sedate memories of smaller, elegant gatherings. We know lots of young people who celebrate “Friendsgiving” separately because they’ve established their own close bonds in addition to their families. We like the idea of following their lead and inviting someone new who would be honored to join your festivities. Invite a single coworker who just moved to Minnesota, your college student’s friend from another country, the elderly gentleman from next door, maybe even an entire family who’s new in town. Share your traditions with them and invite them to bring something along that represents their own heritage, home state or family. WHISK IN A TABLESPOON OF WHIMSY Most Thanksgiving gatherings are all about the food. Some of us can’t escape football in place of background music.
