and view food as a unique experience, something that tells a story, we can graduate to becoming a "foodie". Why not make something we have to do, into something we enjoy doing (if we have the privilege of doing so)? Taking the steps to become a "foodie" is hard, believe me. It is so much easier to throw some Costco noodles into a pot and heat up some Newman's Own Pasta Sauce to plop on top. But food is so much more than that. And although there are times when a rushed meal is completely necessary, there are times when it isn't. In those moments, I've found that cooking with basil leaves my mom's garden and making some homemade pasta sauce with local tomatoes, makes all the difference. In this issue, we celebrate food and foodies alike. This month's feature delves into a local Italian restaurant that makes you feel like you have stepped out of Eden Prairie and into Tuscany. There is also a guide to some fantastic cookbooks, a list of "must-buy" kitchen tools, and an important look into a program that's giving at-risk kids the space to learn and access nutrition.

Sioux Chef’s Indigenous Kitchen SEAN SHERMAN WITH BETH DOOLEY The Oglala Lakota author focuses on indigenously-sourced food, eschewing European staples. His creative recipes published in this James Beard Foundation Book Award winner use game from the Dakota and Minnesota territories, including bison, rabbit and quail, accompanied by forageable native foods such as blueberries, wild rice and even sunflowers. Sherman runs his Tatanka food truck, Sioux Chef catering and cooking classes out of south Minneapolis; his new restaurant is due to open next year. He’s a man on a mission to “make indigenous foods more accessible.” Sample menu: wild rice-crusted walleye, hearty mushroom, sweet potato and bean soup, and hazelnut maple sorbet.
Breakfast with Beatrice BEATRICE OJAKANGAS She’s the star of the Food Network’s The Baker’s Dozen and her richly wonderful recipes are frequently featured in national magazines and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. A Duluth treasure, Ojakangas specializes in Scandinavian fare. Her new cookbook offers 250 well-written, delectable and approachable breakfast recipes, ranging from simple smoothies to elaborate Danish pastries. The Whole Smiths Good Food Cookbook MICHELLE SMITH Primarily known as a health-focused food blogger, Smith centers her recipes on minimally processed foods. Her cookbook is endorsed by Whole30, but the recipes don’t always read like a diet. All of the recipes are gluten-free; some of them contain grains. Recipes are identified for paleo, vegan and Whole30 dieters. Sample dinner menu: salmon with shredded squash and dill, cauliflower bacon gratin and frozen yogurt strawberry bark.

20 years ago this December, Campiello opened its doors. The goal was essentially simple and ethereally complicated: create a destination in Eden Prairie (and for the greater Twin Cities area at large) to experience both fine Italian dining as well as a contemporarily casual “just stopping in for an excellent afternoon meal” go-to. To impress both colleagues at 12:30 p.m. for a “working lunch” as well as spouses for monumental anniversaries at 7:00 p.m. is no easy task, but Campiello does it. They were named “Favorite Italian” by Minnesota Monthly and diner’s choice of “Best Italian” via Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine, as well as a Wine List Excellence Award from Wine Spectator. FADED. Leaving our gardens ready for slumber. Here are five key things to remember when tucking them in for the winter. It is important to cut away any diseased plant materials (branches, leaves) that have not been healthy this season. The disease may carry back into spring growth so watch them carefully. There are a number of perennials that are beneficial to leave up for the winter season. Not only do they provide landscape interest, they also help feed beneficial insects, bees, and birds. Some of these perennials include Astilbe, Lady’s Mantle, Russian Sage, Coneflowers, Sedum, Creeping Phlox, Bergenia, and perennial grasses. Remove all debris and clean planter containers in order to be ready for next year. Fall shrub pruning should be done only on
summer-blooming
shrubs.
Spring-
blooming shrub such as lilacs set their blooms earlier in the season for the next year. Be aware that if you prune them now, you may have to wait until the following season for them to fully bloom. Let’s close with some good news for gardeners. New trees, shrubs, and perennials can be planted until the middle of this month. Just remember to water well until the ground freezes.
