Our first year bringing you Eden Prairie Lifestyle has been a fabulous and enriching experience for all of us. Our goal from the outset was to bring our readers a publication that would be interesting, entertaining, and informative and to do so in a way that connects us in the lifestyle’s we lead in the great community of Eden Prairie. We promised to be listeners and we thank you for your comments during the year. You have connected and communicated with us and for this, we will always be appreciative. We say to you “please continue”.
As we move forward together we will continue our focus on current style, home, health and recreation, local businesses, and much more. An additional ongoing goal for us will be to meet and celebrate unique and interesting neighbors. During the year we have met world renowned musicians, people who have worked in the intelligence world, successful entrepreneurs, interesting artists, great families who give back to the community and more, all our neighbors and all with great stories to share. We also want to recognize great organizations that strongly contribute to life in the Prairie. Thank you to the Eden Prairie Foundation, The Prop Food Shelf, The Prop Shop, The Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce and the wonderful Lions and Lioness organization. Rotary Club organizes the annual event to raise more than $30,000 for its many community, national, and international programs, including student scholarships; service projects to India, Peru, Africa and Honduras; Golden Eagle Awards, STRIVE student mentoring, the "Soaring Bird: Peace through Service" community art project; community grants to local organizations, and an annual recognition banquet for Eden Prairie High School behind-the-scenes achievers called Above & Beyond Awards. Vino Classico will be held from 6:30 to 9:00 PM Saturday, October 7th, at the Eden Prairie Community Center. The event will feature more than 100 wines, beer from at least 10 vendors and several varieties of soda. Green Beans - Blanch beans in boiling water, then quick-chill them in ice water before freezing in containers. Cucumbers - Pickles are an all-time favorite when they are homemade. Use your favorite pickle recipe to enjoy your cucumbers all year long. Berries - Try the dry pack freezing method by freezing individual pieces of fruit. Spread out the pieces of fruit on a cookie sheet or jellyroll pan and place in the freezer. When the pieces are solidly frozen, remove them with a spatula and pack in plastic freezer bags or containers. Herbs - Freeze herbs as ice cubes: wash herbs, pat dry and remove from stems. Chop if needed, or simply press into ice cube trays and drizzle a little water over to fill, so a cube will form when frozen. When ready, pop cubes out into freezer bags. great craft beer is something to be savored, like a fine wine that has been aged to
perfection. It wasn’t that long ago that if you wanted something other than a bland domestic pilsner, you might be lucky to find a decent beer that was imported from Europe. While more flavorful and full-bodied than a domestic pilsner, those imports always seemed to fall short and miss the mark. Now, with the explosion of the craft beer scene in the past few years, it’s easy to find a great beer nearly anywhere! There are so many choices when it comes to choosing a beer that meets your unique expectations— the type of beer and the brewery that produces it—that it may take a while for you to identify the one you like best. Truly, educating yourself about beer is much the same as learning about wines: you really need to try different types of beers to hone in on your preferences. The craft beer landscape in the Twin Cities metro area is impressive. Consider visiting several tap rooms and brew pubs and decide for yourself which brews you like the best. ou’ve heard it before: if it weren’t for your morning latte from the coffee shop, you’d save approximately a million dollars a week. We could buy that submarine. We could take
those hot air balloon piloting classes. We could put our dog through college. Which is all well and good, but for the coffee fiends among us, this advice sounds pretty extreme. However, like reasonable (and well-caffeinated) folks, it wouldn’t hurt to take some well-intentioned, cash-saving advice. In moderation, of course. So, if you love a decadent drink here and there, but wouldn’t mind having a cafe-grade beverage without stepping foot outside of your kitchen, try taking one of these two mini-recipes for a spin. HERBAL TEA
For those of us who are wary of artificial sweeteners and flavorings, but still want our coffee to pack a more flavorful punch, herbal tea can be the perfect solution. You’ll want to find a tea made from natural ingredients - like mint leaves, dried berries, and spices. For a first foray, we love mint for iced coffees and cinnamon or cardamom for a hot brew. That said, doesn’t blueberry iced coffee with sweetened condensed milk sound pretty phenomenal? If you tend to buy loose-leaf tea, you’re already one step ahead. However, if you either already have an herbal tea in teabags you’d like to take for a spin, or if you know you’d only use tea the old-fashioned way if it’s bagged, go ahead and take that route. When it’s time to make your coffee, via French press, pour over, or a pot from the tried and true drip machine, open the tea bag and mix the loose ingredients into the ground coffee in the filter. That’s it! You may choose to use more than one tea bag - it’ll all come down to personal taste. Luckily, thanks to coffee’s bolder flavor, your herbal accent would be hard to overdo. Dried goods keep for a long time by nature, so if you find a blend that’s perfect for you, toss it into a mason jar and keep it with your coffee kit. SIMPLE SYRUP
If you’re a coffee lover with a sweet tooth, then you know from your favorite coffee shop that there’s nothing better than this multitasker: the simple syrup. Is there anything better than reading all of the flavors on a counter well-stocked with those massive bottles? (Aside from your extra pump, of course.) If you roll your eyes at black-coffee-only snobs, this is the at-home secret menu solution for you. Making your own simple syrup is, of course, simple enough. One part sugar. One part water. Boil until syrupy. The flavor, however, is where the magic happens. Have you ever read the ingredients of commercial flavored syrups? If you love them, don’t. But if you have a sneaking suspicion that there isn’t much raspberry in your raspberry sweetener, you’re onto something. Luckily, at home, you know exactly what’s going into the pot - try mashed berries, mint leaves, cinnamon sticks, vanilla beans and extracts. Dried lavender found in the spice section is divine. (And, between us, perfect for adding to lemonade… Or big kid drinks.) If you’re daring, formulate your own combination. Luckily, the ingredients are cheap and easy to come by if you don’t love your first shot at a signature creation. When your concoction has thickened and your kitchen smells heavenly, strain into a mason jar or another container and keep in the fridge. They’ll keep for a week or two. They mix beautifully into iced coffee as well as hot - just like the pros use. Your syrups can wear many hats, too: drizzle onto pancakes, shaved ice, sliced banana, or into oatmeal.

Cook over medium heat until the onions and garlic start to soften and smell fragrant. Then add in tomatoes and sugar. Continue to cook the mixture for a few minutes before blending it up with a stick blender. Add the Mediterráneo Gin to the mixture, bring sauce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring regularly.
