Because the month of December is riddled with potholes of opportunity to eat too much, drink too much, get less exercise and engage in other less than optimal activities, raising your awareness and reducing the damaging impact of a month of careless debauchery can make January less mind-jolting. You want to lose weight after the gluttonous holidays have passed, great. If you haven’t sabotaged yourself and gained an extra 10 pounds by January, I assure you: you won’t be disappointed. For many of us, the holiday season is a free-for-all, and we tell ourselves that we’ll get back on track after the first of the year. We give ourselves permission to graze unfettered, munching on numerous delectable goodies that crop up seemingly everywhere, during the holidays. We gain extra weight, only to have to fight valiantly to peel it from our bodies the following month. Isn’t this a form of self-destructive behavior? And, if we’re being honest, if we pack on 10 pounds in December only to be successful in losing 10 pounds in January, what have we truly gained (or lost)? What about other resolutions? Why wait until the first of the year to implement changes that you know you want to make? It’s like we give ourselves permission to keep doing the thing we know we shouldn’t, but we put an artificial deadline on our naughtiness. We tell ourselves, ‘I’m going to (insert your planned behavioral change) on January 1st,’ thereby giving ourselves permission to indulge until the new year arrives. Wait, what? PLAN YOUR PLAN
Let’s make a plan to start thinking about New Year’s resolutions for 2018. Thirty-five percent of people don’t succeed in their resolutions because they set unrealistic goals that are simply not attainable. (Have you ever seen the veggie-noshing folks slogging through arduous workouts at the gym, when they haven’t seen the inside of a gym since last year’s failed attempt at losing weight and getting in shape?) Other reasons people don’t succeed at their resolutions are variations of the main reason: 23 percent forgot about their resolutions (read: it was hard, so they quit), and another 33 percent didn’t track their results (again, too hard/unattainable). That’s a 91 percent failure rate! 16

The school year is off to an energetic start at the Performing Institute of Minnesota (PiM). This tuition-free charter High School now resides in Eden Prairie, where academics and college preparatory arts training merge with performance and hands-on learning opportunities. PiM is now excited to offer Media Arts and Visual Arts programs. These new majors join the ranks with current major programs in Theatre, Music, Dance, and Musical Theatre. Visual Arts students will expand their critical thinking skills and gain new understandings while working in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing and sculpture. Student Artists will develop their creativity, artistry and dedicated practice through the production of artwork, discussion, critique, and observation. The Visual Arts program is directed by Pat Benincasa, an awardwinning artist, whose passion for geometry is expressed through her dimensional glass sculptures, paintings and drawings. Most recently, Benincasa won first place in the “Innovate” category of the 2017 American Art Awards.

Benincasa describes the environment at PiM as a small town feel, “The classroom turns into a creative community where students are challenged and nurtured to explore the range of their talents and develop their skills. There is a place in our program for both the novice who enjoys art, and the serious art student who wants to do intensive portfolio development!” In charge of the new Media Arts program is John Raasch. For the last fourteen years, Raasch has been building, running and teaching a great photography program at another district. That program has helped to guide a wide array of students in their artistic growth. Raasch is excited to bring his expertise and passion to our school and student artists. Engaging student artists through emerging technology in photography and film, classic-learning skills, coupled with new media and techniques, support the creation of personal, expressive work. Winter Is Coming ARTICLE JAY SMITH
S
orry to all the readers for the tired Game of Thrones reference, but I couldn’t help myself. That said, there may
be at least a tiny grain of wisdom to be plucked from this lessthan-funny (possibly nerdy) reference. Indeed, Jon Snow, the Lannister clan, Daenerys, and the rest all have reason to fear the coming winter – [spoiler alert] there’s an army of angry zombies on the loose trying to turn everyone that’s living into angry zombies! And they have a zombie dragon! Although we as Minnesotans have our own reasons to gripe about the coming winter – arranging child care and coordinating activities for children on breaks from school, shoveling snow, hosting family for holidays, trying desperately to get feeling back in our fingers – all is not lost. It is my position that winter can and should, at least to some extent, be embraced as opposed to lamented. Sure, the quintessential mid-winter trip to someplace tropical might be in order, but while here, why not take advantage of some of fun opportunities that the chilly weather and holiday season provides? Below I have put together a short list of activities to help you to take winter back. Take in a show: Feeling the need for a date night? Or perhaps you’re seeking an enriching experience for the kids? During the holiday season, many of the quality nearby venues run holiday-themed shows to help you get into the holiday spirit. If you’re looking for a night on the town, the Guthrie Theater puts on their annual rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, which runs from mid-November through the end of December. Staying a bit closer to home, the Chanhassen Dinner Theater has a plethora of holiday programs throughout the season. Eden Prairie's own performing arts high school, PiM, is putting on "A Strange & Wondrous Winter Spectacular" that is sure to be fantastic. If comedy is your thing, The Brave New Workshop in Downtown Minneapolis is the place to go. Every year, the fine cast of the Brave New Workshop puts together a hilarious new holiday - and oftentimes uniquely Minnesotan - themed improv show for the season. These shows tend to sell out quick, so get your tickets. Go to Stillwater: Regardless of the season, Stillwater, MN is a great destination for a day trip or an easy overnight stay. In my humble opinion, however, winter is when Stillwater really shines. With scenic views of the St. Croix river and no shortage

of cozy cafes, restaurants, pubs, art galleries, and shops dotting its main street, it is very easy to spend a day or two (there are a number of B&Bs located in town) eating, drinking, and shopping your way through town. One shop in particular, Käthe Wohlfahrt of America, does a particularly excellent job at getting one in the holiday spirit. As the store’s website notes, Käthe Wohlfahrt is dedicated to the sale of “high-quality Christmas items handcrafted in Germany.” It’s an excellent place to pick up that keepsake ornament for the tree or just

peruse to get yourself into holiday-mode. Get outside: One thing that I have learned since relocating from Southern California to Minnesota the better part of 10 years ago is that peoples’ relationship to the cold and their willingness to be outside in it falls on a spectrum. On one end of the spectrum you have the “outdoor winter enthusiasts” and on the other end, you have the “give me warm or give me death” population. I, as I presume most others, fall somewhere in the middle. My idea of fun does not include sitting on a frozen lake in -10° weather swaddled in a thick down jumpsuit. However, there is something both fun and nostalgic about getting out and being active on a cold (not too cold) winter day. Embracing the numerous outdoor activity options that Eden Prairie and the surrounding communities provide is an excellent way to stay healthy and keep the kids from bouncing off the walls of your home. Moreover, a lot of these activities can be done on the cheap. With nothing but a winter coat, snow pants, and boots, you can go for a hike along the trails of one of the numerous nature preserves or wooded areas in the area. As the name suggests, Eden Prairie’s Staring Lake Sledding Hill and Ski Trails offer opportunities for sledding and cross-country skiing. Then there’s skating. Maybe it’s the transplant in me, but I still think the idea of ambulating atop a frozen body of water is a pretty cool concept. Having only learned to skate a couple years ago (my now 5-year-old son wanted to learn, so I decided to try too), it has quickly become one of my favorite inexpensive, outside activities to do during the winter. While some of the public rinks have rentals, a pair of serviceable

“After dad died, mom just seemed to fall apart.” I first contacted Matrix after my dad died. Suddenly, mom was on her own and the partnership that kept things working in her home was gone. She didn’t want us to know that she fell or that she had trouble remembering to pay her bills. I live in the area; my brother and sister are far away. Most of her care would be my responsibility and mom kept saying she didn’t ‘want to

be a burden.’ She also really wanted to stay in her own home. With her own little dog. It was so full of memories. We knew she admitted she felt a little ‘addled’ to a few friends, but it seemed like everything was easier when she was among familiar surroundings. About a month after dad died, I got a call from mom’s insurance agent, who was a family friend. He said, ‘Your mom hasn’t paid her premiums. She used to be on-time, so I’m a little worried about her.’ I guess it’s common for family members to know there’s a problem, but it takes an outsider to spur people to action. I heard about Matrix from a friend and requested a comprehensive assessment.

An RN assessed mom and worked with me to convince her that some help at home could make her life a lot easier and safer. The assessment revealed her vulnerabilities and risks to be addressed. Based on the nurse’s respectful recommendations, we developed a plan together. Mom accepted that Karen’s assistance could help her stay in her house. Matrix led me through revisiting her healthcare directives and mom agreed to let me help her with medical decisions, too. “Matrix made staying in her own home possible.” We hired Matrix to accompany mom and act as her advocate on doctor’s visits. They monitored her diabetes at home and kept me up-todate with regular reports. We worked together to create weekly meal plans. Mom still enjoyed doing her own grocery shopping and we hired Matrix to coordinate transportation for trips to the market. They also said a ramp from her front door and safety rails in the bathroom could help prevent falls. “FESTIVE” LENTIL SOUP KIT This one is for your gift recipient that is short on time or hates to cook. Think new parents and college students. This is one that you’ll have the ingredients to make a few of, or you can keep them all for yourself and have easy, hot, delicious soup several times over on cold nights… It’s up to you. WHAT YOU’LL NEED • Red lentils and green lentils. There’s the festivity! • Dried bay leaves, 4 per kit • Bouillon cubes Combine lentils into a mason jar. Carefully slide bay leaves in along the wall of the mason jar, so they are facing outward, for flavor and decor. Lovingly nestle a bouillon cube or 2 at the top, and seal. Handwrite your go-to lentil recipe on a card. Don’t have one? Alton Brown has an easy one for Food Network that can be simplified. Tie the card around the top - the ribbon itself doesn’t have to be festive because these kits last forever and ever (almost) in the cupboard.
ALL-NATURAL DOG TREATS This one is great for folks with their dog as their Facebook profile picture. If a loved one immediately came to mind, give this one a shot. WHAT YOU’LL NEED • 2 almost-mushy bananas • 1 cup of oats, instant or rolled • Enough peanut butter to turn the 2 previous ingredients into a paste. It’ll be a few tablespoons. Stir until the mixture vaguely resembles cookie dough consistency. Roll into balls or cut into bone shapes appropriately sized for the canine in question. Bake at 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the treats. And you know these belong in a mason jar. Maybe with some pawprint stickers on it. Definitely with some pawprints drawn on the tag tied to it with the ingredients - that’s an important part. In case their dog has an allergy or sensitivity to any of these ingredients, they can discreetly pass them along to another dog mom or dad after your gift-giving duties have been fulfilled.

Combine baking soda, starch, and 5-7 drops of eucalyptus essential oil into a glass or metal bowl, and slowly add water until pasty. Fill 2 tablespoons or so into any silicone baking molds, or a muffin tin with liners. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Then add several more drops of your desired oils to each steamer.
